Excerpt from Short Story Writing: A Practical Treatise on the Art of the Short StoryThis book is an attempt to put into definite form the principles observed by the masters of the short story in the practice of their art. It is the result of a careful study of their work, of some indifferent attempts to imitate them, and of the critical examination of several thousands of short stories written by amateurs. It is designed to be of practical assistance to the novice in short story writing, from the moment the tale is dimly conceived until it is completed and ready for the editors judgment. The rules and principles here presented embody not what I conceive to be right, but what the great masters of the short story have thought to be right, and what they have proved to be at least successful. I speak only as a delver into the secrets of other men; and if I seem arrogant, it is due to the influence of the company I keep. My deductions are made not only from the artifices and triumphs of the successful, but from the struggles and failures of the unfortunate as well; and I have endeavored to make clear both the philosophy and the application of all the principles so deduced.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Bunker This book was written in 1900, and that fact of course strongly influences its value and relevance to aspiring writers today. In fact, I think many current-day readers will find this book to be no more than a mildly interesting historical artifact.Still, it _is_ interesting, and even instructive. Interesting to see what notions about writing have changed radically over the past century and which have remained much the same, and instructive because some of what Barrett says about writing _does_ continue to be true, and therefor relevant. So at least some of this book's advice doesn't differ much from what one would find in a modern book about writing (although it would have to be one of those modern how-to-write books that doesn't concern itself with literary fiction). The guidance regarding plot structure, characters, description, dialog, etc., is often reasonably applicable today with only a little "filtering" to adjust for when it was written. I found the chapter on "Titles Good and Bad" particularly interesting, if only for the fact that this is a subject that I can't remember seeing discussed in any current book about writing. One of the ways in which this book most often shows its age is in the "awful examples" (as the author calls them) of bad writing to avoid. Just as the style of acceptable writing has changed in the past 100-plus years, the style of awful writing has apparently changed even more. I don't think any modern aspiring writer could begin to approach the particular brand of awfulness to be found in Barrett's negative examples. And as you might expect, at times the advice in the book is quaint to the point of being laughable, as in the passage: "The inexperienced writer of the gentler sex is peculiarly liable to be guilty of using conventional endings. To her mind, apparently, the chief end of man is marriage, and the proper end of a story is a wedding."Given all my caveats, I can only recommend the Kindle edition of this book, which is available for free. As is often the case, especially with public domain Kindle books, the ebook formatting is flawed in a variety of ways, but for the most part these flaws are only cosmetic and a mild annoyance.

For me, the author answered some of the lingering questions that I, as a writer, have often asked. He explains how the short story (S.S.) differs from the novel; he tackles the "length" of a S.S.; he classifies the S.S. into nine types; he explains how to effectively title a short story; and, of course, he delves into S.S. characteristics pertaining to plot, character development, climax, resolution, etc. I also liked Bennett's introduction, which briefly helped me to understand who the key players were, in the history of the genre. There is also an easy to navigate appendix and a commentary on revision. The only negative in my mind is that the section on "quest for a market" is outdated. Bennett's book was actually copyrighted circa 1900, but don't let that scare you. He still offere invaluable and still applicable expert advice, based upon S.S. research. Anyhow, I find this book well worth the money.

However, Kindle has done something inappropriate with this e-book: when at eighty percent into the book, Kindle sends the next page to its bookstore. I tried it multiple times, and I had to go back into the book to continue with it. Bad Kindle.
