Like the subtitle says, for success in sports and life By Daniel Estes Terry Orlick's advice for winning and having a positive outlook reminds me of my running coach back in high school. I think In Pursuit of Excellence could've been his bible. Naturally, as a 17-year-old I didn't appreciate the lessons nearly enough. We spent what seemed like an unnecessary amount of time drawing up race plans—actually writing them down in a notebook—and doing visualization drills. I now see the value, but back then all I wanted to do was run.In this book, the author has a tried-and-true formula for success, but since most of us have never competed on the level of the audience he's speaking to, I'm guessing all the planning, visualizing, self-evaluations and pep talks he preaches won't make much sense to the casual reader. Terry Orlick is straightforward and completely un-cynical with his methods. I admire him for that. And he gets results. That's what matters most.

Your Guidebook to Achieving any Goal By calvados man In this recent edition of "In Pursuit of Execllence", Dr. Terry Orlick presents his formula for just that - pursuit of excellence. He relies heavily on his experience with world class athletic achievers, but more importantly extrapolates a guide for all seeking their apex. I found myself many times in this reading reflecting on my own life parallels of focusing on goals, positive reinforcement, controlling distractions etc, to achieve what at some times seemed unachievable life goals. This is however, not a book to be taken lightley. Orlick guides you through others challenges, demonstrates how focus and re-focusing when coupled with well applied action leads to success. You have to dot yourself. In a world of distractions, Orlick's guide is a much needed resource. Executives, athletes, leaders of all sorts and the great doers of our modern world could all benefit from reading this guidebook to achieve their greatest success. A must read.

From the Author Hey, y'all!Cal and Delaney's story has been a long time in the making. The original inspiration came several years ago when I saw a Rocketbuster Boots ad in Southern Living magazine. I loved those bright, fun boots with a passion. A few months later, I re-read Ray Bradbury's The Illustrated Man and started thinking...what if a pair of custom cowboy boots could tell a person their destiny and their destined soul mate? And so, the Prophecy of Love series was born!Join me on a journey into the magical world of custom cowboy boots where anything can happen, even a long denied second chance at a love... Enjoy the adventure!Kelsey

About the Author Although Kelsey Browning doesn't yet have a pair of custom cowboy boots in her closet, she hopes her readers will help her make that dream become a reality. ;-)But what she hopes for even more is that her readers love falling in love with Cal, Delaney, and the small town of Prophecy, Texas. This is Texas at its finest!

I've always loved everything Kelsey has written, but this book went above and beyond that. Right from the start, it felt like this book was the one...like I needed to read it....like my own prophecy was being fulfilled.Delaney and Cal (sigh...just saying their names makes my heart sigh!) are the perfect second chance love story. Laney has always been running. She's terrified of facing life with her heart and her emotions exposed. Cal spent some time running, too, but has come back home to help his father, Whit. Cal knows it's time to settle down...to allow love into his heart again. But knowing it and allowing it are two separate things.I get all emotional trying to describe her perfectly written this book is. The characters could not have been any better. They were absolutely flawed, and absolutely perfect at the same time. I am so thrilled to have read this story, and to know that it is the first in a series. It was an honor to follow along with Laney and Cal. I really enjoyed the boot-making side of the story. I learned a lot and I think the prophecy aspect really kicked the story up a notch.A Love to Last by Kelsey Browning has everything you could ever want in a sexy, contemporary romance. My heart laughed...cried...and laughed again. This is one of those books that you finish and you feel right in your heart that you've just experienced something incredible - what loving reading is all about. I received an advance copy for review purposes, but was not required to write a positive review. This review contains my honest opinion of this book. Well done, Kelsey. Thank you for the chance to read such a beautiful story.

I drove him crazy raving about just how good and creative this book is that entire morning. I loved it so much.Prophesy is a fictional little town in Texas that has basically been built around the Prophesy Boot Company. Every generation there is a prophesy boot maker who has the gift to make the boots. For this generation that person is Laney, but she doesn't want to stay in Prophesy...she doesn't want to accept her gift. There's too much risk involved if she stays in one place. She will either get hurt or will hurt someone she loves...neither are outcomes that Laney is willing to risk. But despite everything, she does love Prophesy and the boot company and Whit, the man who's health is failing but is the current boot maker. On the flip side of Laney is Cal. He came home from the Army and doesn't plan to leave Prophesy again. Whit is his dad and they both suffered when Laney took off. Cal doesn't trust her to stay this time, but the town is counting on her. He has to convince her...for the good of the town and the legacy of the boot company. This book was so incredibly creative. The boot company is like any other custom boot company, but every year there is a lottery for twelve people to get the special prophesy boots. The legend goes that those boots are magic/blessed and the owner will find their one true love and live happily ever after. That's the gift Laney refuses to accept. When she was apprenticing under Whit, trying to channel that gift went very wrong. She won't hurt anyone else ever again. It terrifies her. And Cal terrifies her even more.Truly this is a book about the love of cowboy boots as much as it is about the love affair between these two people. I live in Texas and have some gorgeous cowboy boots that I love. Reading this book, I could see every aspect of the construction of the boots. The author's descriptions of the boots and the process used to create them was incredibly fascinating. I'm lucky that my small West Texas town has a custom boot-maker in town. I fully plan to visit his shop this week. I'm enamored with the process now and want to walk into the store, inhaling that distinctive smell of leather and peruse the rows filled with hand-tooled vamps and inlaid designs.I just loved the book. Part of that is because this book featured a huge symbol of Texas, my home, in the boots and the author made me love them even more. But mainly, I loved this book because I fell in love with Laney and Cal. I wanted to see them get their HEA after so many years apart. I hate that they both got their hearts broken when Laney ran before, but that's what makes second chance love stories so good. Those deep emotions are still there. The trust just has to be rebuilt and the way that Kelsey Browning crafted this story, she created a wonderful second chance at love that I could cheer for.I enjoyed it thoroughly, even though there were a few tears along the way. It was a beautiful story and I'm looking forward to more in the series.I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

The idea that a bootmaker (or anyone) can see a child’s future and design boots for them is interesting and fun. I liked the story between Delaney and Whit and why she had to return to town then felt she should stay awhile to help out. Her indecision drove me crazy however and the postcards representing that happened too much. Once it became more about Cal and Delaney, I was into their chemistry and hopeful for them to get together. I am anxious to read more in the series.

Excerpt from All Things ConsideredI Cannot understand the people who take literature seriously; but I can love them, and I do. Out of my love I warn them to keep clear of this book. It is a collection of crude and shapeless papers upon current or rather flying subjects; and they must be published pretty much as they stand. They were written, as a rule, at the last moment; they were handed in the moment before it was too late, and I do not think that our commonwealth would have been shaken to its foundations if they had been handed in the moment after. They must go out now, with all their imperfections on their head, or rather on mine; for their vices are too vital to be improved with a blue pencil, or with anything I can think of, except dynamite.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. After Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922, he wrote mainly on religious topics such as "Orthodoxy" and "Heretics". Chesterton is well known as a novelist, essayist, storyteller, poet, philosopher, theologian, historian, artist, and critic. He's less well-known as a journalist these days, yet all evidence indicates that he viewed his work for the various newspapers as his primary raison-de-etre. Therefore anyone interested in exploring the works of this colossal genius should include a sampling of his newspaper columns along with all of his other brilliant books."All Things Considered" brings together about thirty columns that Chesterton wrote for the London Daily News in the years before World War I. There's no theme here; as the title suggests, this is a hodgepodge that wanders over everything imaginable. The only unifying thread is high quality.Chesterton writes about politics. In an essay on canvassing, he ponders some unusual double standards. We mere mortals cannot even offer our fellow citizens food for their vote. Politicians, on the other hand, can allow bribes to run into the stratosphere. We also can't threaten each other. The MPs, however, can threaten the downfall of civilization. Lukring behind this apparent hypocricy is the apparent lunacy of expecting the power-hungry to be the most moral voluntarily, even as the crack down on the rest of us.Chesterton writes about daily annoyances. While on vacation, he learns that his beloved home at Battersea has been flooded. Far from despairing, he sees it as a chance to look at that home in a new light. Could it be that our daily lives have grown so boring and monotonous that we barely see the things around us at all? Maybe a forced change of scenery is the only thing that can make us look at daily life anew.Chesterton writes about literature. He ponders a copy of The Eatansville Gazette, a newspaper that's supposed to exist only within the fictional world of Dickens' "Pickwick Papers". Moreover, the imaginary rag was a vile and repulsive publication; why would anyone want to drag it into reality? It seems that two distinct towns are vying to be recognized as the model for Eatansville. In doing so, Chesterton notes, they are trivializing the meaning of the book. There's lots more considered in "All Things Considered". But while every essay here is amusing and almost everyone is a masterpiece, the selections in this book are by no means higher quality that average for Chesterton's career. Pondering that fact, you may well decide that you have to track down all 4,000 of Chesterton's newspaper columns the minute you finish this little selection.

By Christine Richardson I bought this with out looking at the reviews (generally they liked the book and did not like the edition), anyway, I wanted to report back that somehow this has been fixed, as this edition is perfect in every way! Fell good to get it, and read GK's views on everything, as he considers 'all things'. Ok, I'm not witty, but I know a good book when I read it! This is it!

28 of 31 people found the following review helpful. Chesterton was a genius, but do NOT buy this edition By A Seeker If a publisher is going to reprint a work in the public domain, that publisher can at least go to the trouble of typsetting the book in a readable font, with a readable line width. This edition is simply unreadable, and I am returning it forthwith. The 5-stars is for anyone unfamiliar with these essays, which are exquisitely, vintage Chesterton at his best.

An 1897 collection of essays selected by H. G. Wells from among the many short essays and ephemeral pieces he had written since 1893. The book consists of thirty-nine pieces ranging from about eight hundred to two thousand words in length. A one-shilling reprint (two shillings in cloth) was issued in 1901 by T. Fisher Unwin. The essays in Certain Personal Matters are written from a consistent first-person perspective, but only one (ironically, given the title) describes an identifiable event in Wells's life—how he responded to being diagnosed with tuberculosis in the fall of 1887

Certain Personal Matters, by H. G. Wells

About the Author Often called the father of science fiction, British author Herbert George (H. G.) Wells literary works are notable for being some of the first titles of the science fiction genre, and include such famed titles as The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and The Invisible Man. Despite being fixedly associated with science fiction, Wells wrote extensively in other genres and on many subjects, including history, society and politics, and was heavily influenced by Darwinism. His first book, Anticipations of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress Upon Human Life and Thought, offered predictions about what technology and society would look like in the year 2000, many of which have proven accurate. Wells went on to pen over fifty novels, numerous non-fiction books, and dozens of short stories. His legacy has had an overwhelming influence on science fiction, popular culture, and even on technological and scientific innovation. Wells died in 1946 at the age of 79.

The Hired Girl (Ala Notable Children's Books. Older Readers), by Laura Amy Schlitz

From School Library Journal Gr 6–9—Fourteen-year-old Joan Skraggs is a reluctant drudge on her family's farm, and no one appreciates her. She pours her thoughts and emotions into her diary, which is the lens through which readers experience her life. And life on her family's 1911 hardscrabble Pennsylvania farm grinds on endlessly. She loves to read and longs for more education, but is trapped by her circumstances. Her boorish father pushes Joan too far the day he burns her best friends—her books. Soon afterward, she escapes and makes her way to Baltimore. She is taken in by a wealthy Jewish family as a hired girl. They are like no family she has ever met; their affection, religion, and education bind them into a warm unit totally foreign to Joan. She grows to love the family and is surprised and hurt to learn of anti-Semitism. She learns—sometimes through near disaster—about keeping kosher, navigating social classes, and first love. Her world expands as she encounters art, music, and literature. Joan is a well-defined character who makes impetuous, sometimes humorous, mistakes like any teenager. Her diary is written with the emotions and thoughts of a teen, but with the literary structure of one trying to affect an older and more educated sensibility. Readers are treated to a domestic education as Joan describes the incredible amount of work required to keep house in the early 20th century. Coming-of-age drama and deeper questions of faith, belonging, and womanhood are balanced with just the right blend of humor. VERDICT A wonderful look into the life of strong girl who learns that she needs the love of others to truly grow up.—Lisa Crandall, formerly at the Capital Area District Library, Holt, MI

Review The beauty of this novel is that it dares to go beyond the school-is-cruel and paranormal-dystopian-romance conventions and lets its adolescent heroine think on the page about what makes a human being whole: art, love, faith, education, family, friendship.—The New York Times Book ReviewWritten as a diary, the first-person narrative brings immediacy to Joan’s story and intimacy to her confessions and revelations. The distinctive household setting and the many secondary characters are well developed, while Joan comes alive on the page as a vulnerable, good-hearted, and sometimes painfully self-aware character struggling to find her place in the world. A memorable novel from a captivating storyteller.—Booklist (starred review)The diary format allows Joan's romantic tendencies full rein, as well as narrative latitude for a few highly improbable scenarios and wildly silly passion. Tons of period details, especially about clothing, round out a highly satisfying and smart breast-clutcher from this Newbery-winning author.—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)Joan is reminiscent of heroines like Anne Shirley, Jo March, Cassandra Mortmain, and her own favorite character, Jane Eyre...Her overactive imagination, passions, and impulsive disregard for propriety often get Joan into trouble, but these same qualities will endear her to readers everywhere.—Publishers Weekly (starred review)Coming-of-age drama and deeper questions of faith, belonging, and womanhood are balanced with just the right blend of humor. A wonderful look into the life of strong girl who learns that she needs the love of others to truly grow up.—School Library Journal (starred review)The book is framed as Joan’s diary, and her weaknesses, foibles, and naiveté come through as clearly—and as frequently—as her hopes, dreams, and aspirations...by the end readers feel as if they’ve witnessed the real, authentic growth of a memorable young woman.—The Horn Book (starred review)Fans of Little Women, rejoice. Janet's impassioned diary, inspired by Schlitz's own grandmother's journals, explores themes of faith and feminism, love and literature, culture and class in early 20th-century America, all the while charming readers with a vivid cast of characters.—Shelf Awareness (starred review)What a heroine, not just for the early 20th century, which Ms. Schlitz skillfully evokes through Janet’s impressions, but also for our own time. An unsophisticated girl who thirsts for education, an impulsive idealist who, when she errs, passionately seeks to put things right: Janet Lovelace is an utterly endearing young woman on whom not a second of youth, it seems, will be wasted. Brava to Laura Amy Schlitz, whose enchanting writing has brought such a spectacular character to young people’s literature.—The Wall Street JournalAn enlightening portrayal of a young girl’s struggle to assert herself at a time when women’s rights were just beginning to be established...Joan’s strength and determination, despite the expectations of a young woman’s attitude and behavior at the time, are inspiring to young readers. Readers of all ages will find her an appealing heroine.—VOYA...fans, who appreciate historical fiction as intelligent as it is entertaining, will be well pleased.—Bulletin of the Center for Children's BooksJoan is a true heroine with whom readers are sure to sympathize, and her exciting and humorous adventures will keep readers engaged. Written in diary form with the Voctorian eloquence reflecting Joan's love of Jane Eyre, this novel is sure to inspire girls of any background and lead to greater understanding of Jews and Judaism.—Association of Jewish Libraries Newsletter[Joan's] determined earnestness will lead readers to root for her...—Star Tribune"The Hired Girl" is a tender, utterly captivating story about a girl grasping onto small kindnesses and trying to better herself—a classic American story.—San Antonio Express-News

Brown Laura Amy Schlitz’ new book, The Hired Girl, once again is a different story and voice than her previous work. She seems able to reinvent herself, with each new book adopting categorically different elements. Readers expecting the magic or fantastical elements present in some earlier works will not find them here. What they will find instead is a gratifying mix of romantic fantasies, earnest questions about faith and religious truth, and the development of a young, determined personality to create her future, assisted by help and love from unexpected sources.Schlitz creates a wholly human character in Joan Skrags, a 14 year old girl in 1911 thirsting for the learning, culture and knowledge to which she had only brief exposure through her mother and an insightful teacher, but which is cut short by her harsh and intimidating father after her mother’s untimely death. As a “big, ugly ox of a girl”, she is condemned to a life of drudgery on a hard scrabble farm, unappreciated by her father and 3 brothers. It is a telling sign about Joan that it is the burning of her 3 romantic novels, Jane Eyre, Ivanhoe and Dombey and Son that give Joan the resolve to flee her family and seek a new life.Joan ends up in Baltimore at night, lost with no place to stay after fleeing a man who tried to take liberties with her. By lucky chance she is taken in by the Rosenbachs, a prosperous Jewish family, and the real story of Joan’s education and personal growth begins. This is a delightful story, narrated by Joan through her diary in which she can put down her most intimate thoughts, confusions, and fantasies. To gain work as a hired girl in the Rosenbach household, Joan pretends to be 18, forcing her to behave as she imagines an 18 year old would. Her physical development makes this somewhat believable but she still possesses a more childish mind and personality, albeit a very quick one capable of learning and insight. Joan considers herself an earnest Catholic, the faith of her mother to whose memory Joan is very loyal. While she comes to respect, and even love, the Rosenbachs she is also trying fervently to deepen her Catholic faith with the help of a local priest. The conflict and resolution this engenders is an important lesson for Joan, as for us all.Joan also creates a number of conflicts of her own within the Rosenbach family through her well-intentioned naïve efforts to help them. Despite the near term humiliations and embarrassments she experiences as a result, the ultimate results are happy ones and Joan learns from each event. It is not easy to show the growth of a character like Joan, but Schlitz’ own experience as a librarian/teacher has shown her the truth of such things and she develops Joan in a very believable manner. Furthermore, all the other characters are also well developed and believable. I felt I knew and understood them all by the end of the book. The lessons Joan learns are those that all young persons should learn, and even many adults. This book is another masterpiece from Schlitz. I can’t wait to see in what new direction she’ll head next!

Interesting Themes; But Turns Too Predictable For Too Long By Zachary Koenig “The Hired Girl” is a book filled with interesting themes: feminism, religion, class distinctions, romance, and family. While reading, I often was prompted to think about one of those topics in a different way, while the characters were interesting enough to keep me invested. Unfortunately, the end result is that all those themes get muddled together amongst each other and the novel isn’t nearly as clear in concept at the end as it is in the beginning. For a basic plot summary, “The Hired Girl” tells the story of 14-year old Joan Skraggs. Living on a poor Pennsylvania farm, her father is a crude workman who has no respect for her or pretty much all of womankind. With Joan’s mother deceased (“worked to death by Pa”, explains Joan), he is able to rule the roost with an iron fist. All Joan wants to do is get away from farm life to become a teacher, and when Pa pulls her out of classes and insults the schoolmarm in the process, she decides to run away. She ends up as a “hired girl” (servant/worker) for a well-to-do Jewish family in Baltimore, where she begins to question her religious (Catholic) upbringing, her social status, and her blossoming (and of course forbidden) relationship with a young man within the household she serves.Author Laura Amy Schlitz does a marvelous job of making Joan a sympathetic character right from the get-go. Her Pa is a truly terrible person that creates a sort of purgatory for the hard-working, yet creative/inquisitive child. While she plots to run away, readers will be completely swept up in her quest. Even when Joan finds her new occupation in Baltimore, she still manages to be an interesting figure as she meets all of the diverse characters within the household and integrates into the daily comings-and-goings.Unfortunately, it is at this point where “The Hired Girl” starts to splinter (and not necessarily in a good way). The first half of the book sets up a strong, inspiring female character. The second half turns into a pretty standard “forbidden romance” tale. All that great character development and exploration of themes in the early chapters seems to melt away in favor of sappy romance and much more religious exploration than one would expect. I kept waiting for the text to circle back and pick up on those threads from the beginning, but it never does.Overall, I was very intrigued by the setup of “The Hired Girl”, but after the conditions/characters of the story are established, I felt like it turned far too much into a traditional romantic tale (considering the more lofty goals it seems to initially aspire to). As such, I can’t give it more than 3-stars. It was a good read, and stirred a lot of interesting themes, but that stirring didn’t seem lead to much of a finished product.

Timeless Themes; Nice Antidote to Dystopian Novels By Amazon Customer Told through diary entries, Laura Amy Schlitz provides young readers with an engaging, historically accurate view of the life of a young girl in her newest book, “The Hired Girl”.When 14 year-old Joan’s mother dies, her stark life on a meager Pennsylvania farm becomes even more inhospitable. Although she’s a promising student, her father insists she quit school and work on the farm. While her brothers earn a small amount of money for their contributions to the farm operations, Joan’s father denies her any income. When Joan’s former teacher visits and brings books for her to borrow, Joan’s father orders the teacher off the property and forbids her from visiting again. When he burns the three books Joan owns (including her favorite, Jane Eyre) Joan decides to leave home and look for work as a hired girl in a city far from the family farm.Joan pretends she is 18 and is immediately hired by a well-to-do Jewish family in Baltimore. Here her naivete is on display in full force. While she’s no stranger to hard work, she has many lessons to learn about religion, tolerance, love, the servant/employer relationship and more.I enjoyed “The Hired Girl”. Joan is an utterly believable 14 year old (whether it’s 1911 or 2015 somethings are constant – one day is “the best day ever”, the next day “the worst”, and the following day “so good, I wish it would never end”). The text incorporates fantastic vocabulary words – I was happy to be reading on my e-reader so that I could easily look them up! This is partially due to the era and partially due to Joan’s character, who loved classic literature and tried to incorporate the words she read into her diary entries. There’s much for today’s tweens/early teens to learn from reading “The Hired Girl”. The historical setting is interesting, while the messages about tolerance, education, equal opportunities, and “puppy love” are timeless. I do wonder though whether the length and pacing of this book would hold the attention of this age group (which I believe is the intended audience). Sadly, I sense they might think it too boring.3.5 starsThank you to NetGalley and Candlewick Press for a galley of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Curious Kid's Science Book: 100+ Creative Hands-On Activities for Ages 4-8, by Asia Citro

Review “Asia’s The Curious Kid’s Science Book is not just another book of experiments to fill a rainy day. This book guides parents through the process of inspiring a sense curiosity in children, and developing a set of skills to help them problem solve, and be scientific thinkers. Through real-life experience, Citro demonstrates that even very young children can design experiments, document progress, and share their discoveries in a meaningful way. While the book is full of easy, fun, and meaningful science activities, its real value is its approach to helping parents inspire a sense of exploration and discovery that will benefit their children long after they have grown.”—Bob PflugfelderFounder of ScienceBob.comSeen on Jimmy Kimmel Live and Live with Kelly and MichaelAuthor of the Nick and Tesla series“This is a delightful book that draws on a child’s natural curiosity to impart the basics of scientific inquiry—from question to hypothesis to experiment to the results and conclusions. Children will love it and parents will learn some things, too.”—Dr. Henry L. Roediger IIIJames S. McDonnell Distinguished University ProfessorWashington University in St. LouisAuthor of Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning“Asia Citro is a welcome new voice in the world of science education. As an educator and mother of two young children, she has a deep understanding that children are naturally curious, ask good questions, and freely investigate the world around them when given the chance. What The Curious Kid’s Science Book does so well, which so many science books for kids tend to miss, is the celebration of this innate curiosity and penchant for experimentation. With this understanding in hand, this book encourages children not to replicate tried and true science projects, but to ask their own questions and think like real scientists! From building a hypothesis to testing out theories, The Curious Kid’s Science Book will harness the scientist inside children and their adult counterparts. Bravo!”—Rachelle DoorleyArts Educator at TinkerLab.comAuthor of Tinkerlab: A Hands-On Guide for Little Inventors“I am a firm believer in the power of children’s questions to open doors to discovery. It's SO hard to find quality science activities for kids, especially geared towards preschoolers, kindergarteners, and early elementary-aged students, but this book has you covered! I love how, unlike other science books out there, it actually encourages children to make predictions, take an active role in the experiment itself, and evaluate the results of their experiment. This is definitely a must-own book for anyone that works with children or wants to encourage a natural curiosity and a love of learning in their own children! I wish I could give it 10 stars!

Awesome Resource for Inquiry-Minded Parents and Teachers By Stephanie Haass As a mother of twin preschoolers who is about to jump into the world of homeschooling, I am so excited to have found this book! I am passionate about inquiry-based learning, which means I will be focusing on helping my children formulate and test their own hypotheses rather than drilling academic facts. There are very few resources out there that truly support this type of learning, and I applaud Asia for seeing the need for this type of book and filling it so superbly! This book will serve as our science "curriculum" this year, and I'm looking forward to diving in with my curious kiddos ;)

My 8 year old daughter is in love with this book By Raising a Happy Child It is hard to write a science book that would scale well from early preschool to late elementary school, but Asia Citro has masterfully done just that. My 8 year old daughter is in love with this book, and she certainly has her fair share of other science books to choose from. What I really appreciated about the approach is that there are no direct answers and explanations in the book. In other words, kids cannot just read about an experiment instead of really experiencing it and finding the answers on their own. This moves them from being simply consumers of science facts to active participants in scientific inquiry. Another big plus point for age modification suggestions in the book.

This story is autobiographical related against a backdrop of historical events in America and elsewhere in the world. It begins in Boston during the years of the Great Depression and the prelude to World War Two. It transports readers to distant places here and abroad ending in the political turmoil of the early 21st century. The narrative has a number of themes the most salient is "taking a stand" against violence, prejudice, and bigotry. Others entail the author's dissent against the continual deterioration of academic standards and integrity which he witnesses throughout his career as an educator and which stokes his disillusionment with academia. Highlighted in closing chapters are the corruption and electorate distrust of our political leaders, the ideological divide, and a call for the restoration of our republic: a government more representative and responsive to the electorate. The author is a retired university professor of sociology. After completing his college education at American University in Washington, D.C. he served in the U.S. Army of Occupation in Germany during the Korean War. Following his military service, he went on to pursue a PhD degree in Sociology at the University of Chicago. During that time he worked at the Population Division of the U.S. Bureau of the Census where he was involved in research on population migration and the War on Poverty. In 1968 he returned to Chicago where he finally earned his PhD degree and embarked on a teaching career and later earned a black belt in Shotokan karate. He has a number of academic publications one of which appeared in Demography the official journal of the Population Association of America and has served as an editorial consultant for Demography. Also, he has presented research papers at academic professional meetings including one at an annual meeting of the Population Association of America in Montreal, Canada.

By ron toles This autobiography is an easy read about a man who lived a disciplined life and lived it well. Like most of us he had several set-backs in life, but he overcame them because he was determined not to allow himself to be a victim of bigotry and political correctness. His PHD in Sociology from the prestigious University of Chicago is evidence of the author's intelligence and of what one can accomplish if one is determined enough. The author clearly describes just how difficult it can be for a tenured professor to maintain high academic standards when an administration seems to have different priorities. This book is a must read for those who are concerned about the deterioration of academic standards at the college and university levels due to political correctness.

An insightful historical perspective on 20th century America By Gretchen Oh Having had a ringside seat at the academic circus, from my years as a graduate student in the 1960s until my professor husband's retirement in 2005, I am familiar with the experience Dr. Baer has described with such accuracy, insight and outrage. I have seen the declining quality of the use of the English language since the early 1900s sadly reflected in the term papers and exam answers of graduate students today, even for those who are native English speakers, and have observed that it parallels the decline in the educational level in general. Today's "A" paper would not have earned that high a grade 100 years ago, but today's professors and teachers, grading on a curve, are still expected to award A's. Dr. Baer's distress over this phenomenon has been very clearly expressed in his book, and for those who have spent their adult years in the halls of ivy, this book will hit a resounding note.As the story of a young Jewish American man making his way through life in the United States beginning in the early 1900s, Dr. Baer's autobiography also sheds an interesting perspective on what it was like to live through a number of fascinating eras and historical events in the history of America and the western world. Having lived through most of them myself, and I enjoyed the refresher course.

Not only did I get a great history lesson from World War I to present day,. also I learned of the personal history of the author. He was so clever in describing what was happening in his own life , the death of his sister, his challenges with academia and prejudice and his war experiences. I appreciated the way he described his personal life in context of what was happening in the world and then to top it off he added quotes from leaders of the day or literature quotes that reflected the thinking of the day. I loved this book....so thought provoking and filled with voice.
