By Amazon Customer Great Practical Read I used several paragraphs from your book this last weekend with a family going through grief with a son with cancer. You had 2 paragraphs (ch 12) that fit perfect to share with them. I then followed with a plan of how they could know the Prince of Peace Jesus Christ. This is an easy read, but thought provoking, that takes minutes a day to read a chapter. I recommend for anyone to jumpstart each day. Bob Dunn

By Lisa Murrell As an Educator, retired teacher and advocate for higher education, I would advise this book as a necessary tool for all young adults. This is the "Blueprint" you need to help guide you towards not only academic success but success in life. We live in a very competitive world and everyone needs an edge. The guidance and wisdom from a young, successful woman like Maryam is going to help catapult you in the right direction. I also believe this book should be purchased for every freshman entering college or anyone who wants to further their education, no matter your age.

I was interested right away in giving support to her efforts to empower today's youth. I wish I 'd had her book to read when I first went to college. Her book offers great wisdom on the many topics young people face in life on several levels. I worked with inner-city children throughout most of my professional life as an educator and counselor and much of the ideals I tried to convey to my students are contained in this book. The insight she shares from her years and experiences growing up in Nigeria offer great interest as well. I purchased this book to use as a guide toward continuing to help the young people who still contact me in my community. It helps to show that what I'm saying is also in print! Our communities need more people like Ms. Shumate to share their knowledge and experience for the greater good of us all.

Publication date: 1884'An obiter dictum, in the language of the law, is a gratuitous opinion, an individual impertinence, which, whether it be wise or foolish, right or wrong, bindeth none--not even the lips that utter it.' OLD JUDGE.Augustine Birrell, "an equity draftsman and conveyancer" (or paralegal) published this book at his own expense. As he himself tells the story:"... In 1884 I had never reviewed a book, or indeed written a line in either the daily or the weekly press, and I could not, therefore, have known that Obiter Dicta was a book very easy to review, touching as it did, lightly enough, on a variety of familiar topics, and composed in a style not yet grown jaded. However that may be, 'reviewed' Obiter Dicta was, and at once, in nearly all the papers and with a prodigality of praise."My own impression of this little book of essays is that it got better and better as I read along. The imaginary life of Falstaff, which was by a friend of Birrell's, is very entertaining. But here is a sample of Birrell, in an essay on Benvenuto Cellini:But how many other people are to be found, good, honest people too, who no sooner take pen in hand than they stamp unreality on every word they write. It is a hard fate, but they cannot escape it. They may be as literal as the late Earl Stanhope, as painstaking as Bishop Stubbs, as much in earnest as the Prime Minister--their lives may be noble, their aims high, but no sooner do they seek to narrate to us their story, than we find it is not to be. To hearken to them is past praying for. We turn from them as from a guest who has outstayed his welcome. Their writing wearies, irritates, disgusts. Here then, at last, we have the two classes of memoir writers--those who manage to make themselves felt, and those who do not. Of the latter, a very little is a great deal too much--of the former we can never have enough.

But I shall be satisfied with a mere de facto existence for the book, if only it prove a little interesting to men and women who, called upon to pursue, somewhat too rigorously for their liking, their daily duties, are glad, every now and again, when their feet are on the fender, and they are surrounded by such small luxuries as their theories of life will allow them to enjoy, to be reminded of things they once knew more familiarly than now, of books they once had by heart, and of authors they must ever love."One thing this collection of essays has in common with its predecessor, the self-published Obiter Dicta, is its tendency to get better and better as one reads on. The first essay, on Milton, is fine. The essay (or lecture) on Pope is better:`Hard as thy heart, and as thy birth obscure,' sang one of Pope's too numerous enemies in the easy numbers he had taught his age. It is, however, now taken as settled that the elder Pope, like Izaak Walton and John Gilpin, and many other good fellows, was a linen-draper. He made money, and one would like to know how he did it in the troublesome times he lived in; but his books have all perished.With the essays on Samuel Johnson and Edmund Burke, Birrell rises to a level which he then sustains through the rest of the essays, on Charles Lamb, on Emerson, on Cambridge poets versus Oxford poets (no contest), on Book Buying (a gem), and "On the Office of Literature":"... Dr. John Brown's pleasant story has become well known, of the countryman who, being asked to account for the gravity of his dog, replied, `Oh, sir! life is full of sairiousness to him--he can just never get eneugh o' fechtin'.' Something of the spirit of this saddened dog seems lately to have entered into the very people who ought to be freest from it--our men of letters. They are all very serious and very quarrelsome. To some of them it is dangerous even to allude. Many are wedded to a theory or period, and are the most uxorious of husbands--ever ready to resent an affront to their lady. This devotion makes them very grave, and possibly very happy after a pedantic fashion."If Birrell had not been named Augustine, I might never have heard of him, but I like him more and more. He is a writer to curl up with, even in this fender-less age.

I ordered 4 and received them quickly. When I received them I was more than pleased !! The story is interesting and the characters put a smile on your face. We can't wait till the Christmas book is published. They are going to be some of my Christmas presents for sure.

By Rebecca James Because of the way this book is written it will feel like you've got your own dating coach sitting there next to you. I loved the style of the book and after reading it (took me about three days) I felt so much more confident and empowered. Instant Boyfriend is a classic "how to" book on dating. The best way for me to describe it is that it's literally page after page of tactics. I've read a few dating books recently (after going through a bad break up) and it felt like this book helped me get over things quickly and get back on track with my dating life

By A Customer I purchased this book in preparation for my husband's upcoming deployment, looking for hope and inspiration to get through the year he is away. When I started reading, I related easily to the comical stories and I enjoyed reading the bios of real "Heroes." I thought that for sure I would recommend this book to family and friends. As I continued reading, my opinion of the book changed.A large portion of the book is dedicated to financial advice, parenting advice and other off-topic advice. If I needed this sort of guidance, I would have purchased a book specifically on one of those subjects. I was expecting this to be a book on military matters, geared toward an intelligent and experienced audience. Advice on helping children cope with a parent's deployment would be very welcome, but I don't need to be told whether to exercise, how to manage my spending, or how much tv to allow my children to watch.There was also much more personal information about the author than I was expecting. While I did enjoy the stories about family life, the author's awards and successes seemed to pop up in many of the chapters and really weren't relevant or valuable to the reader. Her continual reference to her husband as "The World's Greatest Fighter Pilot" didn't add much either. To her credit, she did include some humorous stories about mishaps which made her seem less superhuman.She lists some pages of acronyms and some protocol, and there were a few tidbits of useful information, but most of the information should not be new to any but the most inexperienced of military wives, or civilians. If you already know what a commissary is and that things can be damaged during moves and that deployments can be extended, then you might want to look into a different book.For an encouraging, humorous and emotional book on deployment, I highly recommend Email to the Front by Alesia Holliday. I am currently reading Surviving Deployment by Karen Pavlicin and find it practical and informative, and very well researched. If you need a reference on protocol and military functions, I would suggest Today's Military Wife by Lydia Sloan Cline and/or one of the Handbooks by Ann Crossley.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Just what I needed By Lisa Poplawski I have been "married to the Marine Corps" for 12 yrs and still found this book to be helpful. At the time that I picked it up to read I was just getting used to having my husband home from a 9 1/2 mth deployment to the middle east and finding out that he is soon to go back. Needless to say, I was feeling pretty sorry for myself. Reading this book reminded me that I AM one of the "sisters" of military wives. I HAVE done this before and I HAVE and WILL survive. I really enjoy learning about how the other services do things because Marines do things in their own way. I found Mrs Kay's references to "the World's Greatest Fighter Pilot" highly amusing because I call my Marine "poster boy" because he looks just what you think a Marine would look like. I really didnt need some of the advise because I have been around the Corps a time or two, but it was the spirit in which it was given that I enjoyed. Reminding me to take a step back, thank God for the blessings I do have, and just doing what needs doing.Personally I find other people's stories to be the greatest benefit to me. When I tell people about the time my husband was in Bosnia (and on a med float), I was working full time, had a sick baby, required to move MYSELF due to paperwork snafu's, my car breaking down (the BRAKES went out while driving!!!) being short on boxes, help and only having two weeks to do it all in, they can't help but to say Whoa! But at the time, I did not feel stressed, I just knew that stuff needed to be done and I was the only one here to do it, period. My moving helpers put things down where ever there was space so I ended up with tools on the stove and toys in the utility closet, but when it was all set up a few days later, I can honestly say it was the proudest moment in my life thus far.Thank you to Mrs Kay for reminding me of what I HAVE done in order to show me that I CAN do this too!!

I was left at home with a collicky 4 week old baby. Needless to say, I needed all the inspiration and support I could get. This book provided it! This book is very well written. Ellie Kay feels like a best friend holding your hand and helping you keep your chin up during the tough times. This book may not tell you the protocol of military life, but during a deployment, that is the last thing I was seeking. This book is a gem! It is the ideal read for someone going through the difficulty of seperation due to deployment. I thank God for Ellie Kay's words of comfort and wisdom!

It has real life information and strategies for new counselors, including those things you don't learn in your graduate classes. And I found that it has a lot of helpful tips and resources for experienced counselors as well. I especially liked the sample activities and practical solutions offered throughout the book. The layout of the book allows you to easily pull out the information and resources you need without a lot of searching. A great "go to" resource book for school counselors.

I would have liked the leading lady to be a little less wish washy with choosing which brother to secretly date. There is a big build up to the end and the book closes with one line. No epilogue or any type of closer. I felt a little cheated without an ending to close the whole story. I don't know if this will be a series and I didn't really get to invested in the characters as they were all a little shallow without a lot of background. This is an honest review for a free copy.

I mean it's not unheard of to be in love/lust with two guys but the sheets weren't cold in one brother's bed and she was in the other brother's bed. She was really experienced for an 18 year old who'd only slept with her high school BF. Finally, the author really needs to hire an editor--seriously.

For one thing the heroine she was so fickle it was not even funny.i just did not like her. I thought Logan was to good for her. As for Austin ugh he did not know what he wanted. From positive parenting discussion to teenagers samples and situations was really a big help. I may not be a parent today but what I learned now will definitely leave a mark to me. I could share these learning to my friends who are already parents.What really strikes me is the communication part. When I was a kid, even though I was a trouble and I feel so embarrassed, my Mom never never made me feel that I can not reach her and I am able to approach her. This leads to a more honest relationship between a parent and a child. Communication is really a key when raising a child.Another point is, the independence part, Ms. Deedley also tackles the importance of giving independence to their child at a young age. Even how unimportant it is, still it is independence in their understanding. The child will feel be more valued and have a sense of achievement. This kind of parenting will make the child an independent adult with sense of responsibility.This book is very likely to recommend for first time parent.

King & Kennedy still hold the spot as my favorite couple & Siren did not disappoint in being the sheisty, shady, b**** she was known for in part 1. There was so much drama going on that there was no way I could put it down until the end. I guess its true that whats done in the dark will come to light! Poor Jada was caught up in the middle of the drama with her "friends" & had her own situation going on. She seems like a really genuine friend/girlfriend that understands loyalty. I wonder how Dolla is gonna get out of this? I hope Meech gets him self together & is able to be with London, after Siren meets her fate. I hate to see King in his present predicament but hopefully the love that he & Kennedy share will prevail. Waiting on part 3 to get the answer to all my questions & assumptions. Hopefully it wont be long. Another 5 star banger by a very talented author.

Can I get an advanced copy of part 3?Jessica has done it again! She has delivered another nail biting book that leaves readers on the edge of their seat and emotionally unstable. You know it's serious when you're ready to jump in a book and ready to handle business yourself. There are one too many secrets being hidden in this book and they all may very well bring Kennedy to her knees or make her stronger than ever.King though he's practically every woman's dream man, he holds probably the worst secret of all. I got faith that he'll make it right. Dolla secret my be the straw that breaks the camel's back. He missed out on multiple opportunities to come clean and he passed. Now that he's forced to tell her, hopefully Jada don't kill him. Siren really tried it this book lmao. I got big giggles out of her trying to play hard ball. She got played everytime. Meech deserves to happy after loving her scandalous behind for so long.I'm excited to see what's going to happen when Siren's secrets are exposed to everyone. Detective Maria smh is a jealousy club thot! I can't take her serious and I hope her little plan blows up in her face. So bitter!!!!!Great read from beginning to end! Definitely a must read!

I'm going to start with Siren shady self. I can't not stand her! She's not loyal & im so tired of her slithering around like the snake she is. I love Meech & I really feel for him. For this man to step up & be in Elijah's life as a father figure & then find who his real father is had to hurt. I loved him & London together. I feel like their relationship was solid & Meech deserves a good woman.Now Dolla.....SMH! I can't even!!!! The drama he got going on is just beyond me. What happen to Megan was messed up & now Dolla is in a deeper hole than he was to begin with. Poor Jada. It's one thing to feel like your significant other is cheating, but when she finds out about the babies I know it's going to crush her. Especially when she learns their names...smh. I can't wait to see that situation unfold.Now King & Kennedy...Lawd Have Mercy! I can't imagine the pain Kennedy felt while listening to the conversation between King & Meech. I know her heart shattered into a million pieces. I just hope Kings finds her & Kayla safe & sound!! I love King & his love for Kennedy is something serious. I hope Kennedy is willing to allow him to explain the situation. King will do anything for his precious Kennedy & I hate to see a solid bond like theirs be broken over this Elijah news. Slumgullion by George Roper is a must read for anyone wanting to get perspective on the changes in the life of ordinary people in California since during the last half century. This tale recounts the experiences of growing up without the high adventure or outlandish family problems we are fed nowadays by our desperate entertainment complex.. It is hard to believe a time existed when learning bad words at camp was a mysterious adventure because shucks and darn were all that was ever heard at home. It is hard to believe that, being responsible for your self, making your own straw mattress, washing your own dishes in five sequential tubs, etc. etc. would not raise loud cries of abuse, danger, and health violations. The picture of life like Mr. Roper draws should become a reference work for anyone wondering what happened to self reliance, initiative, and gumption, as well as atext book for how to return to such values. Of course Slumgullion is also a tail of foibles and misadventures that leaves one rolling with laughter. Imagine the plight of a railroad engineer who inadvertently looses a water melon in the water tender of a locomotive causing the engine to loose steam on a busy stretch in the mountains near Colfax. All’s well that ends well. But, the book ends with a sober discussion, I was personally involved in, about the run up, execution, and aftermath to the Iraq war. That section for me punctuates the final loss of innocence and recognition that our own government can, and is being manipulated by special interests whose greed outweighs respect for life and moral decency. If this walk through the experiences of a down to earth individual through our recent California history can avoid one reader to avoid feeling “personally fooled and foolish’, as Mr. Roper concludes, it will be worth a place of honor in literature.

George admits to learning fly fishing at a very early age. This is a clue as to what to expect of the book. A fly fisherman studies everything that it takes to find, attract and eventually catch his quarry. I don't mind being treated as a fish because George's objective wasn't to catch me but to make me think. His stories kept me up well beyond my bed time. They were addictive, they were about his youth and they were about my youth 20 years later. My initial thought was a self-challenge. I wondered if I could recall my youth stories in as much detail than and as succinctly as George captured his? I could not. George's prose shifted subtly into essays. You are introduced to one of the smartest men in the country. Google confirms that Dr. Baer had a part in changing the way we visualize terrain on maps. During their opposing dialog, I was rooting for George, but listening to Wolf (he was right about visualizing terrain, maybe he nailed this too). At the books ending my simple thought was: What just happened? Then I laughed. Every single story was a build to the end. I don't need to read them over, they were addictive and each sticks in my head. I also see the pattern, what George was "doing" with the stories. I do need to read the final essays over with some coffee, not late at night, and think.... Well done George!!!!

Renée was less than impressed with Cedric's job as a writer, and his pursuing of her only adds to her questioning of this man that drives her crazy, yet makes her stomach twitch with nervous energy.At the end of book 1, Renée was at an impasse, forgive Cedric and move forward with him or walk away forever. As His Muse's Fidelity begins, it is very clear that Renée has returned to him and they are happy living their partial BDSM life while real life plays around them. But while they settle into their comfortable life and Cedric's new book release, Renée comes face to face with a woman that warns her about him and his ability to ruin her. Unsure if she can trust the strange woman, and Cedric shutting down any answers that may help her she is left questioning their relationship and if she can really trust him.Calling on best friend, Lesley she vents all of her questions to her. Ms May brings the answers we were all left with from the first book on the story of Renee and Cedric. If you remember in the first book Renee met Cedric when her friend talked her into going with her to a reading with this author. In this book it describes the story much better. Renee is pushed by Cedric to move in with him. That she doesn't need to work or anything. He can take care of them both. Cedric is moody when writing a book but even more so when he has to do personal appearances. Cedric's mother shows up and confuses Renee since Cedric told her she was no where near them. Also, an ex of Cedric's shows up. They both try to get her to leave Cedric. Trying to convince her that he is evil. No, he's not evil, he just is a very good Dom. Renee is the perfect sub for him. He pushes her boundaries, just as any good Dom would do. But, will Renee let them get to her? Can she keep dealing with Cedric's push for her to move in with him? Well, you will have to read this chapter of their lives to find out.

By Tiffany Davis I must say that I feel like the author, Linnea May, read my last review and wrote this story just for me! This is the companion novel to His Secret Muse. This book answered almost all of the questions that I had about Cedric and Renee's relationship and the characters themselves. Renee is truly in love with Cedric, but because of his lack of wanting to talk about himself, she starts to doubt whether or not he is truly serious about her, especially when his mother and ex-girlfriend show up making similar claims and warning her of just that! This book has quite a few twists and turns and since I am not one to spoil a book for someone who is just reading reviews to see if the book is worth the read, I must say that this book is certainly worth your time. I can honestly say that after reading it, I am comfortable with the way the story ends..... However, I would not be upset if the next book had to do with Renee's loud, outspoken, best friend Lesley... hint hint!!!! I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
