10 Essential Instructional Elements for Students With Reading Difficulties: A Brain-Friendly Approach, by Andrew Johnson

Review Andy Johnson has written a unique professional text, unique because this may be the first American book to discuss reading difficulties from a top-down perspective. What Johnson does, quite eloquently, is to argue the limitations of the bottom-up perspective for developing readers. On the other hand, Johnson presents the research supporting a top-down perspective, especially for developing readers who read with understanding. He doesn't argue against developing student decoding proficiencies as much as he argues for a far more contextualized approach in the development of this aspect of emergent literacy and for a much more important role for student self-selection of texts and for the engagement of students in wide reading. His arguments are clear and his writing is easy to read. His suggestions for instruction are research-based and cover early literacy development quite completely. Primary grade teachers, especially, will love this book, and rightfully so.  (Dick Allington, Professor of Education)

"As an educator with 30 years’ experience as a reading specialist and learning disabilities teacher, I recommend this book as a resource that pulls together divergent ideas about reading, and weaves them together in a way that makes sense."

(Joan Whoolery, Reading Specialist)

"It has become fashionable in recent years to view the teaching of reading as being as simple as getting children to sound out words. This is understandable. When we look at a page we see words made of out of letters, so it's easy to think that that's all there is to it. And for legislators and publishers this is an attractive proposition. The fundamental job of teaching children to read becomes something simple, logical, easy to measure, and of course easy to explain to parents. However, a closer look at what really goes on when we read soon tells us that the story is deeper, more beautiful, and more complex. Those words refuse to play ball (try “give” and “hive”) and when we read we don't actually look at every letter in every word--far from it. Professor Johnson tells the story of reading in a logical and clear manner with a book that is excellently researched, immaculately referenced, and full of practical tips for the practitioner."

(Terry Bernstein, (London Borough of Barnet) and former Senior Literacy Difficulties Specialist)

"This book for teachers who want to help their struggling students learn to read and write includes classroom-tested reading and writing strategies and activities that students will enjoy and practice. Creating the conditions for student success is all spelled out in this book."

(Paul Wickham)

"This is the text I wish I had when I began to teach. Dr. Johnson clearly illustrates the process our brain uses to create meaning from text. He suggests reading teachers need to de-emphasize phonics and use activities that ask the student to also use semantic and syntactical cues. The text includes ten chapters of instructional elements with tons of activities to increase motivation, phonic awareness, and fluency."

(Marty Duncan, Ed.D., educator, author, former teacher and superintendent)

He understands the psychological obstacles that kids need to overcome to get good at reading. This book shows how to guide these kids from the detached despair of learned helplessness to the happiness of rapid improvement.I wish I read this book before I started teaching my own kids to read.“A reading teacher’s number one job is to help students fall in love with books.” - Andrew P. Johnson.“Often a learning disability is really a teaching disability… Downshifting is when students put in less effort as a way to save face as they expect to fail and can at least say, ‘Well, I didn’t give it full effort. It’s a form of learned helplessness… To help these kids, a teacher needs to build trust.” – Andrew P. Johnson.“It is a mistake to think these students don’t want to learn. Instead they don’t want to fail, and their desire not to fail is much stronger than their desire to learn. However, if failure is the only option given to them, they will do everything possible to avoid the activity…”- Andrew P. Johnson from “Reading Difficulties.”

The chemistry of fragrances. From perfumer to consumer

... a good insight into the perfume industry

This book is unashamedly chemical, written by and for chemists. It is multi-authored, but all the contributors are currently or were previously employed by the same company, Quest International, giving a cohesive approach to the content. The editor, Charles Sell, welds the various chapters together to give a good insight into the perfume industry.

After an introduction on the history of perfumes and fragrances and on perfumery materials from natural plant sources, the longest chapter of the book covers the chemical synthesis of perfume ingredients, especially terpenoid ones. The industrial syntheses developed by the various companies in the fragrance business are well described in chemical and economic terms and accompanied by reaction sequences.

The rest of the book shows how these basic ingredients produced by the chemist are used to develop fragrance products through formulation, and outlines all the other issues that the industry has to consider such as fragrance perception, fragrance performance, stability testing, biodegradability, safety and toxicology.

A final section deals with the future search for new fragrance ingredients which the authors claim will involve chemists using their synthetic skills, inspired by nature, and aided by computers.

A sniff page is included, the scent of which lasts long enough for the reader to finish the book in a cloud of lavender.

It's more well written and easier to comprehend, there are no annotations/diagram numbers breaking up every sentence. The diagrams are much fewer in number than the aforementioned text book but no less informative. If you are a student of perfumery this book is invaluable, I highly recommend it!

9 of 12 people found the following review helpful. chemistry of fragrance By White 'n Nerdy if you love organic chemistry and fragrance this is the book for you! Otherwise it contains tiny tidbits of information for natural perfumers. Natural perfumers should buy something by Mandy Aftel. If you are into synthetic fragrance you might like this book.

What does true love look like once the honeymoon's over?

Eight smoking-hot rugby players. Eight partners. Seventeen kids. Beaches and barbecues and beer, salt and sand and sea. Family and good mates and no worries. December in New Zealand.

One very pregnant, very tired Hannah Montgomery Callahan is playing hostess to it all, doing her best and wondering if her best is good enough. And one legendary All Black captain is willing to do whatever it takes to show her that when he promised to be there for her forever, he meant it.

Note: This book includes three steamy scenes. And they're good ones.

As a fan of the Escape to New Zealand series, I couldn't wait to read this book. As someone who long ago found my HEA, I know that the best part is not the falling in love (even though that makes the best story), it's what comes afterward. And while this doesn't often make for great literature, in this case seeing the growth of all the characters' love stories was a treat. Revisiting my favorite characters in one very satisfying epilogue to all the previous books in the series, I lost track of how many times I caught myself wiping my eyes.We find the All Blacks and partners gathered for the wedding of Hugh and Josie, right where the last book left off. We get to see some memories of what happened in previous books from the other partner's POV, and a few scenes from after the stories ended. Unlike a series where past characters pop up, but the story stays in the current couple's relationship, we get to see scenes with each couple as central figures rather than just a "drive by". My only complaint is that I'd like to see lots more of my favorites, Finn and Jenna and Emma and Nic. Maybe next Christmas......This book would not be a good read as a stand alone, and while it has many dramatic moments you won't find much angst and conflict, but that's not what this book is supposed to be. If you haven't read the series, I recommend getting started right now. Then you too will be planning trips to EnZed, watching rugby on satellite and following the All Blacks on facebook and instagram. This series is addictive and before long you'll be convinced that these are real people and you'll be sad to see every book come to an end. That's why this book is satisfying for fans of this series.I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated for my review nor was I required to write a positive review. The opinion expressed here is my own.

A reunion with all my favorite New Zealand fellas and their ladies. I started it as soon as it hit my Kindle and finished it within a day. It was sweet, and charming, and a tidy little novella, but the story just didn't go anywhere. I kept waiting for the plot to really start, and for the story to focus on something, and it kind of meandered around for a while, checked in with the various couples, told a few missing back-stories, sprinkled in a few love scenes, built up to one action moment, then kind of just...stopped.Ultimately, this is a love letter to the fans and to the characters. If you've read all the previous books, and loved them, then you'll like this well enough. But if you haven't read the entire series so far, this won't make a whole lot of sense. There are a lot of characters here, and none of them are explored deeply enough to get a sense of them. Everything we know about them we learned in previous books. This particular book didn't advance the story at all, or introduce anyone new, or really develop anyone's relationship further. There were glimmers of some real struggles for Hannah regarding body image and insecurity, which would have been a welcome topic to explore (I find Hannah to be a bit wooden and lacking depth, and entirely too "perfect"), but after basically one conversation, her issues were miraculously resolved. This was frustrating, because I would have happily sacrificed one or two of the secondary plotlines to get a deeper exploration of the primary couple and their struggles with themselves and each other. By attempting to check in with everybody, we didn't get to spend much time with anybody. So I liked it but didn't love it, and I wanted it to be so much more. I pick up these books and reread them periodically, but I'm afraid this one won't go into the rotation.I received a free copy of this in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated and all opinions are my own.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Loved it! By M. Miller I was lucky to receive an advance copy of Just Once More, and I loved it. It was like catching up with old friends. It's December and the end of the rugby season. Everyone has gathered for Hugh and Josie's wedding, and for a reunion of old friends and teammates at Hannah and Drew's house.Sweet, funny, steamy, sexy, sweet - it was everything I've come to look forward to in the Escape to New Zealand books. Catching up with everyone was great, and I especially loved that in this book, the perspective shifted somewhat and the story was told through some of the guy's eyes - particularly Drew and Finn's. Drew and Hannah's story has always been emotional for me, and seeing it through Drew's eyes just made it more so.**SPOILER**I didn't see it coming, but I loved that Koti was involved in the birth of yet another of Drew and Hannah's children. Also made me smile when Drew dropped back into captain mode and started issuing orders, and Koti didn't blink an eye.Note: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated for my review, and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion expressed above is my own.

By Yumi Fujiwara I purchased this book with the intent of learning how to deal with my behavioral problems that come with Asperger's, and just from what I've read of this book so far, I think it will be a great help for me and any fan of the movie. This book gives readers tips on how to deal with everything from your emotions to goal-setting to bullies, narrated by the five emotions to keep readers' attention. It also has parts where you can write about yourself in, from a list of things you'd like to change about yourself to a list of things you find disgusting. I also liked how this book had some new artwork I had never seen in any other Inside Out book at the moment, and was surprised to see Bing Bong mentioned a few times as well! If you like Inside Out, or you know a kid who has behavior issues, buy them this book. You won't regret it one bit!

After reading it through, I've decided to buy several more as gifts. This book, so filled with information, is the perfect way for young people to make sense of their ever changing emotions. I thoroughly enjoyed its great artwork, wonderful content and, if the portions of the book for your own thoughts are filled in, it will become a treasured keepsake.

Great Therapuetic Resource for children counselor By ReviewMasta This is a great resource in working with kids in a therapeutic setting especially with kids who are on the spectrum. It has lists for coping with sadness and anger as well as activities for positive self talk. The therapeutic material isn't anything mind blowing but since it relates to this movie I can see clients turning to this book to review their coping skills when upset.

What if you're a suburban mom with a snarky sense of humor and a wild imagination prone to dreaming up disasters? What if you and your friends take your daughters for a camping trip, and while on a quick trip to the nearest country market you see a man being bullied and then beaten? What do you do? Back away quietly? Not if you're Molly Deacon, who, along with her Mittyesque imagination, has a temper not to be trifled with.

Stepping in to rescue Alan Cartwright has consequences far beyond what Molly could ever imagine, and she must find hidden reserves of strength to survive a terrifying chase through a foggy night.

Carolyn Nash's first book, Raising Abel, is a memoir of raising her horrifically abused adopted older son. The pen name "Carolyn Nash" was taken to protect her son's privacy. Carolyn and her family live in Northern California.

Another great tale by Nash By Cheryl Stout I love author Nash's style of writing - straight forward, perceptive, exciting. The Trunk Key (Kindle Single) and Raising Abel are favorites of mine and OUT OF THE FOG is also a winner.Molly Deacon, mother and wife, has taken her daughter camping with a group of other girls. She heads to the local small market to pick up some breakfast supplies and ends up in the middle of a hate crime.A strong female protagonist, a rip roaring storyline, good guys, very bad guys - all on a rollercoaster ride of fear and danger.I heartily recommend this story to anyone who enjoys a suspenseful, well-written story.

Engaging Mittyesque Retelling That Is Quick, but Has Heart By Sophia Rose I saw the word 'Mittyesque' and I was sold without giving much more attention to the blurb. I don't know about you, but back in high school (dating myself here) I enjoyed The Secret Lives of Walter Mitty when I checked it out of the library off of the extra credit reading list for English class. I was excited to see that this is about a woman who has Mittyesque daydreams except hers are all doom and gloom instead of savior of the world stuff. This was a short, yet engaging story that hit several emotional connects for me.Molly Deacon has to leave the campsite to head into town because of the minor disaster with their food cooler. The night in the forest is very foggy, but she gets to the nearest little town, does her marketing, and is about to head out. That's when she sees a man getting threatened by three large men. Several stand around and watch. Molly can hear enough to know that the guy is being bullied for being gay. Calling emergency doesn't help. But then things escalate as does Molly's temper. Molly charges in and rescues the man after he is kicked and beat up badly. Now, instead of dreaming up disasters in her daydreams, she is in one. The area is remote, the lead bully is the sheriff's son, and there is no one to stop the chase that will lead to Molly and Allen being 'taken cared of'. Molly and Allen have to get out or get help, but they definitely need to survive. Her husband and kids need her.And so, this was a unique twist on an old story. Molly slips inside her head and imagines the worst-case scenarios. It's a coping mechanism she picked up because of her issues from childhood. She is a middle-aged, average looking suburban mom, but she champions Allen like a gladiator. The bullying was brutal and the closed in community run by an authoritative bigoted sheriff gave me shivers. The suspense was good as was the developed camaraderie between Molly and Allen. I liked the survivor-type story as they worked together to stay alive.I only had two little niggles with the story. First, it was hard for me to tell when Molly slipped into a horrible daydream and when it was real. I suppose that was on purpose because that's how the original story was, too. Second, the ending was very abrupt. The climax came and there wasn't really a denouement to speak of. It's over? uh, okay, was my brilliant response.I listened to this one on audio. Ilyana Kadushin was a new narrator for me. I was okay with her as a narrator, but I did have trouble with her 'Allen' voice (good guy) sounding like the one she did for the bad guy (pinched and raspy). Her pacing and emotional tones were pretty good. One scene drew tears from me.All in all, I enjoyed my revisit in this Walter Mitty gender swapping retelling. It touches home with issues of hate crime, taking a stand on principles, 'don't get involved b/c it has nothing to do with me' bystanding, and of course being prepared for emergencies. I would recommend this one for those who want a fast read and enjoy general fiction with heart. My thanks to Audible for the opportunity to listen to this story in exchange for an honest review.

Chambers After reading stories like The Trunk Key, Seismic Shift (Kindle Single), Phoenix Heart, and Love is Strong as Death, I've become a big fan of Carolyn Nash's writing. She excels at writing taut, suspenseful prose that moves along quickly to a dramatic climax, and "Out of the Fog" is no exception. If Molly Deacon had only ignored the three bullies picking on a helpless stranger, she could have been on her way in her SUV and never given it a second thought. Instead, her "Queen B!tch Temper," as her husband called it, erupted, and she and the stranger quickly found themselves on the run from a homicidal maniac. With darkness coming on and a heavy, bone-chilling cold fog settling in, the two faced grim odds of escaping with their lives. And it didn't help that Molly had a fertile imagination that constantly conjured up disaster films in her mind.Out of the Fog is a fast-paced, gripping story that I enjoyed very much. Molly Deacon is a marvelous character who I would love to see more of.

Excerpt from Sir Thomas More's Utopia: With Introduction and NotesThe present edition of the Utopia of More has been undertaken with a double object; to encourage and assist the study of a work which deserves to take a far more prominent place than it has hitherto held in our curricula of advanced education, and to supply a want which no preceding edition has aimed at supplying. Few works have so many claims to attention. Though not originally written in our own language it is, through the versions of Robynson and Bishop Burnet, one of the most famous works in English literature, and to every student with any pretension to a competent knowledge of that literature an acquaintance with it is indispensable. As a romance and work of art it ranks, if not in vogue at least in celebrity, with the Pilgrim's Progress, with Robinson Crusoe, and with Gulliver's Travels. To the student of moral and political philosophy or of the theory of education it is of equal importance, and it well deserves a place, as a subject of study, beside the Republic and Laws of Plato and the Politics of Aristotle; while the light which it throws on the state of Europe, and more particularly on that of England, at one of the most critical periods in their annals, would alone entitle it to be regarded as a textbook in the study of the social and political history of the sixteenth century.Of preceding editions two only are known to me which have any claim to consideration, and neither supplies what it is the aim of the present edition to supply.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A More perfect plan... By FrKurt Messick Thomas More, executed by Henry VIII (one of his best friends) for treason, led an illustrious career of politics and letters. Under his friend the King, he served in many capacities - Speaker of the House of Commons, Master of Requests, Privy Councillor, etc. - culminating with the trust of the position of Lord Chancellor, a position in those days matching the prominence (if not the definition) of Prime Minister in these days. More's strong integrity and resolute mind caught the attention of scholars, political and church leaders internationally; it was this same integrity that most likely was his undoing, refusing to assent to the King's divorce and severance of ties binding the English Church with the Roman overlordship of the Pope. Indeed, More was, if not the actual ghostwriter, then certainly an inspiration and editorial aide to the document produced by King Henry VIII against the continental protestants, earning for Henry (and his heirs ever after) the title of Defender of the Faith (historical irony is that this title, most likely not intended to be hereditary, now declares the defense of a faith separated from the one for which the title was bestowed). While an Ambassador to Flanders, More spent spare time writing this book, 'Utopia'. The very title is a still a by-word in the English language (as well as others) of a state of bliss and peace; it is often used with the context of being unrealistic. 'Utopia' is More's response to and development from Plato's 'Republic', in that it is a framework for a perfect society, or at least perfect according to More's ideas of the time. Penned originally in Latin, 'Utopia' has been translated widely; one of the better translations is by H.V.S. Ogden, in 1949, still reprinted in various editions to this day. Originally published in Latin in 1516, the first English version appeared in 1551, some 16 years after More's death.-----------Utopia-----------Thomas More writes this as if he were traveling, and meets his friend Peter Giles, who introduces him to Raphael Hythloday, a scholar/traveler with tales to tell.Hythloday made friends with a prince who outfitted him for a journey. He traveled through deserts and fertile lands. He proceeds to give an account to Giles and More. In an ironic twist, given More's own attachment to Henry VIII, Hythloday states that he doesn't give his information in advice of kings or princes, for to be beholden to them is not a wise thing. He quotes Plato, in saying that unless kings were themselves philosophers, they should never appreciate philosophers.More argues for public service, which Hythloday rejects as something that other place-seekers will use to bolster their own positions. Then Hythloday makes the startling pronouncement with regard to how a society should be constituted: 'As long as there is property, and while money is the standard of all things, I cannot think that a nation can be governed either justly or happily; not justly, because the best things will fall to the share of the worst men; nor happily, because all things will be divided among a few (and even these are not in all respects happy), the rest being left to the absolutely miserable.'Hythloday proceeds to give an account of the life of Utopia, where, he says, there are so few laws and so much liberty and equality that virtue is always rewarded, and each person has what he or she needs. He talks about this under the following headings:Of Their Towns, Particularly of AmaurotOf Their MagistratesOf Their Trades, and Manner of LifeOf Their TrafficOf the Travelling of the UtopiansOf Their Slaves, and of Their MarriagesOf Their Military DisciplineOf the Religions of the Utopians'Utopia' is a radical document. It anticipates the modern idea of communism, with private property at a minimum; it is generations ahead in the idea of equality of the sexes and freedom of religion. This may seem a remarkable statement from someone who will go to his death supporting the Roman hierarchy, but in historical irony, had religious freedom been respected in England at the time, More would have had nothing to fear.'Utopia' was a place of education and free inquiry. Again, More's own life models this - travelers from as far away as Constantinople and Venice, visiting More's home in Chelsea, remarked on the incredible sense of knowledge and respect for reason and learning, not just for the men, but also for the women of the household (More's own daughter once impressed Henry VIII with her Latin training so much he was at pains to find something at which he excelled that he could best her at).At different points throughout the text, More (speaking through Hythloday) jabs in witty and insightful manner the habits of the day - that kings are often more concerned to fill their own coffers than increasing the general wealth of the nation; that courts are designed to be self-serving and self-perpetuating; that liberties are curtailed not for just and reasonable causes, but often for petty personal reasons. Some of the ideas, however, are not as modern or enlightened as they might seem at first glance. Utopians' freedom of religion exists only in very narrow bounds of reason - they are all monotheists, and while they might identify this deity with the sun or moon or a good person who died long ago, they are not permitted to speak or attempt to convert others to this idea, without risking bondage or death. Not too Utopian after all...-------More was beatified by Leo XIII in 1886 and canonised by Pius XI in 1935 (it is significant to note that Anglican-Roman relations were at a strained point during these times, and the raising of an English saint who rejected the Anglican construct served at least minor political points, something More would have been able to appreciate, if not approve). The official feast day is July 9.

This is her fifth book dealing with the subject of Project Management. She has been creating and teaching online Project Management courses at the undergraduate and graduate level since 2001.In her very straight forward yet supportive Introduction she states, ‘After doing research of my own and reading about how many failed IT projects there have been in just the past 10 years, it lead me to the following questions: Did the project fail due to a communication breakdown or was it a glitch in the software or an outage on the servers? Could the project failure been prevented? If so, by the stakeholders or the PM? Are IT projects failing due to PM’s not improving their skills by learning how to proactively take charge of a project, communicate effectively and lead a project to succeed? Does the PMI offer enough webinars and courses on the topic of leading successful projects versus learning from failed projects? Are PM's not taking enough initiative to research past failures and understand how they can avoid the mishaps from past failed projects?'She elucidates the current preoccupation with smart phones – ‘Technology is an integral part of our lives. Whether we want to stay connected 24/ 7 or not, we are hooked on it with little hope of ever weaning away from it anytime soon. This is particularly true with the current younger generation growing up with technology as a normal thing in their everyday lives. I do not know many teenagers who are not constantly using their smartphones to update their status of some type of social media platform, let along do I know of any that watch television or listen to the radio to get their latest news as my generation did growing up. This generation is connected more than we probably want them to be, but it may be a good thing in regards to the experience they will have to continue innovative thinking and moving technological advances forward in the future.’While all of this introduces Natalie’s posture, it doesn’t begin to touch on the course she offers here in this career guide book is meant to provide us with 10 real world IT project examples, why they failed, and Lessons Learned for each one. It will provide you with key points on the following concepts related to IT projects Requirements, Business Case, Planning Reasons, Execution Factors, Business Factors, Political Factors and Technical Factors. Her book focuses on IT Project Managers, but her gift of communication makes the information contained within useful in so many other situations. She is one wise woman with a gift for communication and coaching. Grady Harp, December 15

Lessons From a PMP Certified Author- Valuable Tips for Managers, Leaders and Coordinaters By Mia Johnson This book is highly useful not only to project managers in IT industry, but also in other fields as well. Natalie Disque's own experience as a Project Management Professional certified member and as a project manager helps the reader giving valuable information and aspects to look in to. Smart Writing: Great Advice for Leaders and Managers By Veritas Vincit It always surprises me how applicable different professional lessons can be to the regular aspects of life. Identifying problems, thinking of creative solutions, and forcing yourself to look at the world in innovative ways are not skills that are exclusive to project managers or IT specialists, and yet these are some of the core take-away points from this book. Every aspect of business requires its own level of attention and expertise, and Project Management is no exception. This isn't the most fascinating book to read, as going through old failures of IT project launches and administration issues isn't always dynamic, action-packed business, but Natalie's words have a slow burn to them, and by the end of the book, I understand her philosophy towards business and leadership. I know that some of the insights gleaned from this book will benefit my personal and professional life, most likely in ways that I won't completely recognize. Some books just become integrated in your life, and I have a feeling this one will fall into this category.

Excerpt from Day Dreams of a SchoolmasterThompson was teaching the Classics at Edinburgh Academy, and his soul appears to have revolted at the dreary waste of effort involved in the methods of teaching usually employed at that time. This is the theme of his "Day-dreams," and reading between the lines we can see that his endeavours to bring about reforms were not unattended with difficulty. Many years later he expressed doubt as to whether he had not laid irreverent hands upon ancient forms and time-honoured traditions, but whatever the value of the book to the teacher, as such, to the layman fortunate enough to discover it, it has been a source of unalloyed delight. D'Arcy Thompson was dubbed an unsuccessful schoolmaster. No doubt he was in advance of his time, but two lads who rose to eminence in literature were in his class at the Academy - Robert Louis Stevenson and Andrew Lang - and who shall say how much these men owed to his individuality. Mr. Lang has written in "Adventures Among Books": "One can never say how much one owes to a schoolmaster who was a friend of literature, who kept a houseful of books, and who was himself a graceful scholar and an author, while he chose to write, of poetic and humourous genius."About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. UnCommon Learning: Creating Schools That Work for Kids, by Eric C. Sheninger

Review “Too often, school improvement initiatives layer activities upon cultures and systems that are not ready to receive them. Uncommon Learning rejects the notion that something must be done in addition, and instead begins with changing the foundational culture of a school—consistent with NASSP’s Breaking Ranks Framework for School Improvement. Countless schools—and more important, countless students—will no doubt benefit from the guidance Eric shares.”—JoAnn Bartoletti, Executive Director, National Association of Secondary School Principals“In Digital Leadership, Eric Sheninger trail blazed the path many educational leaders followed to become digitally connected and now, in Uncommon Learning, he gets right to the heart of exactly what we need to do to create schools designed to empower today’s students. Eric doesn’t just talk about change; he has actually led change in his system and his story is both inspirational and filled with practical tips for implementation.“—Dave Burgess, New York Times Best Selling author of Teach Like a PIRATE and co-author of P is Pirate: Inspirational ABC’s for Educators"Eric's vision and collection of resources to create a student-centred learning experience for schools is something that all educators should read. Although he shares great ideas on what opportunities could look like, he challenges us to push our own thinking of what school could really look like and move forward to become the innovative educators our students need."— George Couros, Innovative Teaching, Learning, and Leadership Consultant"For the past several years, Eric's mission has been to find effective ways to use technology to improve student performance. In 'Uncommon Learning - Creating Schools That Work For Kids' he shares the most impactful practices he has found. These practices provide a guide to move school reform, using technology, from a concept to a reality." —Dr. Bill Daggett, Chairman and Founder, International Center for Leadership in Education"Get rid of excuses. Stop having conversations. Start taking action. Uncommon Learning is the guidebook that will get schools from apathy to action, from ignorance to influence, from the status quo to supercharged with excitement. Eric Sheninger has written another winner."—Vicki Davis (@coolcatteacher), Author, Reinventing Writing Host, The Every Classroom Matters Show"Every educator who truly wants to maximize the learning opportunity for every student will benefit from the thought provoking questions, challenges and solutions Eric provides in UnCommon Learning. He artfully provides a roadmap for creating a bold new vision for learning for both educators and students through empowerment, mindset change, blended learning, re-designing instructional practices through a true integration of digital strategies to enable students to be creative, problem solvers and owners of their learning. His lessons learned and those of teachers will provide schools with the foundation for transforming their schools for uncommon learning."—Susan Gendron, President, International Center for Leadership in Education"This is one of the very few, really good books about digital learning – not just because of its clear and informative examples and rich cache of tools, but because its experienced and multi-award winning author, Eric Sheninger, explains how to develop and implement digital learning, indeed all learning, in a balanced, sustainable and self-critical way. Unlike most pro-technology books, this passionate yet practical book is more about the zen of changing than about the zealotry of what must be changed. Teachers, leaders and change agents in education everywhere should put this book right at the top of their reading lists."—Andy Hargreaves, Winner of Boston College Excellence in Teaching with Technology Award, 2015Brennan Chair, Lynch School of Education, Boston College"With a strikingly fresh and practical perspective, Eric Sheninger takes contemporary learning to a new level of possibility with UnCommon Learning: Creating Schools That Work for Kids. Educators throughout the world agree that we need to support "right-now" learners, but the big question is HOW to transform the schools in our own communities. Eric has created a modern leading-manual which promises to be a must have classic for principals, headmasters, administrators, parents, and teachers. If our students read the book they will find an advocate. Sheninger's thinking on learning communities, curriculum, digital tools, networking, and makerspaces is genuinely designed to work for kids of all ages."—Heidi Hayes Jacobs, Author and international expert on contemporary curriculum and instruction"UnCommon Learning is a book that is long overdue! In this most important book for educators at all levels, Eric Sheninger has put into writing what he has “preached’ all over the country for years – that in order to effectively maximize student learning, the technology that is all around us cannot be ignored but instead must be incorporated into the classroom learning process. UnCommon Learning will prove to be a game-changer for how we educate children!"— Baruti Kafele Principal, Education Consultant, Speaker, Author"There is a growing movement in this country and others to use what we have learned over the decades about effective teaching and learning to design the next generation of classrooms and schools. Eric Sheninger’s new book is a welcome addition that movement. He adeptly walks the line between practical strategies and motivating visions of the near and distant future."— Robert J. Marzano, CEO, Marzano Research“In this urgent and practical book, Eric Sheninger argues that technology must become as central to students' learning as it is in the ‘real’ world. Uncommon Learning will teach educational leaders how to integrate technology into the classroom in ways that reflect today's complex, feedback-rich digital environment."—Daniel H. Pink, Author of Drive and A Whole New Mind"Sheninger, in UnCommon Learning, identifies key areas for growth within our current school systems. Most importantly, he lays out a simple and intentional path to addressing these areas with the goal of improving learning and the overall school experience for students. Educators, regardless of their role within a school, can use this text as a guide to create optimal learning environments for their students with the ultimate goal of creating schools that provide current, relevant and engaging learning experiences."—Josh Stumpenhorst (@stumpteacher), Award Winning Teacher and author of The New Teacher Revolution"Unlike so many experts offering prescriptions for our beleaguered schools, Eric Sheninger has walked the walk, running an actual school and striving each day to make it better. In UnCommon Learning, his ideas, born out of real experience, not wishful thinking, will resonate with smart educators who have seen the Next Big Thing come and go with little to show. Our kids deserve to be surrounded by educators like Sheninger who are willing to examine their own prejudices and practices, then think long and hard about what needs to change."—Greg Toppo, National Education writer and author of The Game Believes in You: How Digital Play Can Make Our Kids Smarter"UnCommon Learning is a great look at the six most important EdTech trends in schools that work for kids: online and blended learning, BYOD, badges, maker, professional learning, and new learning environments. Eric lays out eight key steps to creating UnCommon Learning environments. Don’t miss it!"—Tom Vander Ark, CEO, Getting Smart"Schools today are at a disadvantage when it comes to educating today’s learner, which necessitates a corrective plan of action. Eric provides not only ideas, but also practical strategies that have been implemented to create the type of learning that students crave and deserve. This book will change the way you think about school structure and function in an increasingly digital world."—Todd Whitaker, Professor of Educational Leadership and author of over 30 books, including What Great Teachers Do Differently"For students to succeed in today’s fast changing world, schools must join technology and teaching to prepare students with relevant knowledge and skills. Bringing passionate commitment and vast practical experience, Sheninger lays out concrete ideas and strategies for every school to transform learning to provide meaningful learning experiences for all students. This is a must-read for practitioners and policymakers.” —Bob Wise, President, Alliance for Excellent Education"Educational transformation can happen and this book tells how. In UnCommon Learning, former teacher and school principal Eric Sheninger shares practical strategies and processes to create sustainable positive changes to better serve our children."—Yong Zhao, Author of World Class Learners and Never Send a Human to Do a Machine’s Job

By Jeffrey Zoul I just finished this outstanding book by Eric Sheninger, one of the leading educational thinkers in the world today. The title of the book is perfect, as throughout it, Sheninger makes the case that we need to make dramatic changes in our schools and classrooms, moving beyond the "common" to more relevant, authentic, innovative, and student-centered experiences. Although such practices are currently "uncommon," if we read Eric's book, we have a roadmap for changing the status quo and making "uncommon learning" the norm. Throughout this book, Sheninger offers practical, proven ideas for transforming our classrooms, libraries, and school cultures. He draws on both his past experiences as principal of an award-winning high school as well as his current experiences working with educators around the globe, sharing lessons learned from both that can be replicated by others hoping to improve educational experiences for both students and teachers. This book is clearly written and organized. It starts by making the case for why we must change the way we do school. Then, it proceeds with chapter-by-chapter examples of creating specific "uncommon" learning experiences. In each of these chapters, Sheninger offers specific stories and examples showing the "how" of change. In the final chapter, "Schools that Work for Students," Sheninger is at his best, offering a call to action so that our kids' learning experiences are ones that make them actually want to come to school. Specifically, he offers eight ways to move uncommon learning experiences forward in our schools. I recommend this book for educators desiring the best for students we serve and looking for specific tips on how to do so.
