Little Robot, by Ben Hatke

From School Library Journal Gr 2–4—Once again Hatke delivers a delightful graphic novel with a positive female role-model, fun non-humans, and a message of friendship. When a brown-skinned cherubic girl chances upon a robot that looks like a trash can, she finds a friend worth protecting. Each day they explore the junkyard and the surrounding forest, with the little girl acting as a guide to new sights and concepts. Both love playing together, but when the robot wants to leave, things go downhill. It is up to this resourceful girl to save him from the bad bots of the factory. With her trusty wrench in hand, she repairs parts, builds traps, and fixes hearts. Like the characters in the movie Wall-E, these robots have a limited range of facial expressions, so they "speak" and emote in sound effects. Changes in font size, punctuation, and position play just as large a role in comprehension as body language and composition. It's Hatke's skill in communicating the narrative and emotional complexities through visual cues that makes this such a strong offering. Though the girl and her bot start their journeys separately and in silence, by the end, music and friends surround them. Young readers, and those new to graphica, will find the easy-to-follow illustrations, large borderless panels, and steady pace welcoming. VERDICT A pleasantly colorful adventure of discovery and friendship. Highly recommended.—Rachel Forbes, Oakville Public Library, Ontario, Canada

OBrien We just received this book in the mail, the morning of its official release, thanks to Amazon pre-order. The kids were thrilled! Boys and girls ages 4-12 gathered around and poured over the picture and stories together, and then took turns reading it individually.Since they are big fans of Hatke's Zita series (see Zita the Spacegirl (Zita the Spacegirl Series)), the kids are excited to read all of his graphic novels. As a mom, I love that the pictures and stories draw the kids into books and inspire them to read.I asked the children what they thought of the book:"I really liked it. The setting (bridge and river and mountains) reminded me of my town. There's not many words, but I really enjoyed it." -- boy, 12"I really like it too, even though it's probably more for younger kids. The pictures were fun." -- girl, 11"A girl finds a robot but he wants to play with other robots like him. So he leaves her...I like the robot that fixes stuff. He fixes up all the other robos. I think it's silly... I like silly." -- boy, 8"The bridge looks like Virginia's bridge." -- boy, 5"Yeah, I like it. I like everything. It's about a girl and a robot." -- boy, 4

Our hero is a little girl who likes to fix things and she saves a cute little robot from capture by the big bad robots with only By Nicola Mansfield Lovely, warm fuzzy cross between a wordless picture book and a graphic novel. Our hero is a little girl who likes to fix things and she saves a cute little robot from capture by the big bad robots with only the help of a wrench. I've read several of Hatke's books and his art is adorable. The majority of this title is wordless, next come sound effects but there are speech bubbles also and I'd say this would make a good visualized story for young non-readers to interpret as well. The girl and the robots are charming and I found myself rooting for them for the entire story. The book is timeless, it could be taking place now or in the future. The cuteness and junkyard robot setting brought to mind "Wall-E" and I believe this is going to be an endearing tale. I loved it!

This was our single book purchase of the year after reading over a thousand books this year (my son is 3.5 and he loves reading it all by himself). It's got an ethnically diverse female lead into STEM without making it into a big thing. It's just dramatic enough to really get my 3.5 year old on his toes, and it's sweet and adorable and just wonderful. It's gone viral in our books for littles book group. Hatke's other book, Julia's House for Lost Creatures is also amazing. This author is the bees knees.

What is gifted underachievement? And what, if anything, could counteract it? What are the social and emotional needs of gifted children with disabilities? How might parents assist their gifted children in coping with bullying?Eruditely written studies characterize the second edition of the book, The Social and Emotional Development of Gifted Children, as they answer all of the above questions. To balance perfectionism in gifted children, teachers are admonished to 'provide a classroom that promotes mistakes as informative with an emphasis on the process of learning and growth.' To offset the degrading stigmatism associated with giftedness, adults are exhorted to 'provide gifted children with opportunities for interaction with intellectual peers and with those with mutual likings.' To curtail emotional stress, parents are prompted to 'set high expectations for their gifted children but to be careful not to communicate that their love is contingent upon achievement or success.' Best Ebook PDF Fall, by Cora Brent

From NYT and USA Today best-selling author Cora Brent comes a new epic crossover novel.

Jenny...

I was a lost girl, a child bride. Now, to most people I appear to be just an average college student. They would never guess my strange history. But secretly, I'm still held down by my past. I cannot bring myself to trust men. So why do I find myself drawn to the most dangerous one of all? Oversexed, foul mouthed, and 10 years my senior, he should be my nightmare. Instead he's my fantasy....

Deck...

How many women have I ruined? Hell if there's any point in counting. Only once did I ever do something unforgivable, and the consequence crushed my soul. Maybe that's why I remain here, in the barren desert wasteland occupied by the worst of my degenerate family. This is a prison I've inflicted on myself. Into my purgatory walks Jenny; feisty, beautiful, but little more than a girl. No one decent should want a thing to do with me. I told her that. She didn't listen.

Note: Fall is a crossover between the Gentry Boys series and the Defiant MC series. Characters from the Gentry Boys as well as the book Promise Me figure prominently. However, Fall was written as a standalone, and it is not necessary to have listened to either series.

Warning: This audiobook is intended for mature audiences over the age of 18. It contains explicit language, sexual situations, and violence that may be upsetting to some.

Have you ever dream of the perfect man....if you have then you need to read Deck story. This is a book that will make you laugh and cry. It will keep you reading it until you can't read anymore and still then you will not be able to put it down. The way that Cora Brent intertwine all her other books in this one is amazing. You will know what's going on in her MC world and will have a view of how the triplets Gentry are doing while you learn to love Declan and Jenny. In this book you are going to learn more of the triplets childhood thru Deck's eyes and you are going to fall in love with this big alpha male, foul mouth big heart man. I wish I can give this book more than five stars because it actually deserve more. In other words this book is absolutely PREFECT. if you love Cora Brent's book this one is going to rock your world. If you are a Cora Brent virgin then don't be shy, buckle up and jump in this ride, I can guarantee you that you are going to have the time of your live....... Cora Brent outdid herself again.........like I said this book is ABSOLUTELY PERFECT.....

There's this feeling of loneliness to them, of past hurt and damaged souls, but she makes sure to balance that all out with love and hope. These characters have tragic pasts in some way or another, but there's also a real sense of promise to them as well.A tough, hot biker, tatted up and rough around the edges; and a defiant girl desperate to define herself, to claim her own free will. They're so good together and exactly what the other needs. He's 28 years old, Jenny is 19, and I liked how Deck thought Jenny was too good for him, too young, and that he was just not anything she ought to need. I always love a hero who second-guesses the relationship but just can't leave it, or her, alone. At first, I thought Jenny wasn't being very smart, but then I saw that she is young and so busy running from her past, that she's not really looking to where she's going. It made sense. There was a strength about her, a purpose. She just had to see it.The sex was hot and needy, and there was a good build-up to it as well. I thought the romance was well played, too. By the end of the story, I was believing that these two had something together, something to build on.There were some things that were sad to me, like Reese, Amelia, Maggie's wedding picture, the red snow, the stale cake mix. Kind of haunting, bittersweet images nicely layered into the story. This author has a way of showing you the bad but also the good in people.I do think if you've read the other Gentry boys' books, you'll have a deeper appreciation for this story. I loved seeing all the boys again, and this book really ended on a high note, for everyone. A sweet ending, well-deserved for this h/H. I'm looking forward to seeing where else the author goes with this series.

It probably has something to do with the fact that I got to read about some of my old favorites. I adored Jenny, and loved seeing how she has grown as a character. Deck... Well there are no words for how much I loved him. Their romance took time to develop, and I loved it. I am actually sad that it is over! Great job Cora!! Another wonderful book!

Fish, Stars and Trees is designed to help children of all ages “see” God in the world around them—in His creation. It came about as I was sitting on our back porch looking at the beautiful live oak trees that are native to where we live. I was thinking of how calm, peaceful and delighted they made me feel. I realized that seeing bodies of water as well as looking up at the night sky had that very same effect. I believe that’s because those are things of God’s creation rather than things made by man, no matter how beautiful those things may be. After I had written down the poem that became this book, it occurred to me that fish, stars and trees are all Christian symbols. I’m pretty sure I couldn’t have thought that up all by myself….!

Currently we have 15 grandchildren and are planning on giving this book to their families. We like the quality of the graphics as well as the truth of the words. We especially appreciate the time the author has taken to share the scriptures from God's Word at the end of the book that is the foundation for what she has written. This book would be a welcome addition in any home for children and adults.

C. Vann Woodward was one of the most prominent and respected American historians of the twentieth century. He was also a very gifted and frequent writer of letters, from his earliest days as a young student in Arkansas and Georgia to his later days at Yale when he became one of the arbiters of American intellectual culture. For the first time, his sprightly, wry, sympathetic, and often funny letters are published, including those he wrote to figures as diverse as John Kennedy, David Riesman, Richard Hofstadter, and Robert Penn Warren. The letters shed new light not only on Woodward himself, but on what it meant to be an American radical and public intellectual, as well as on the complex politics and discourse of the historical profession and the anxious modulations of Southern culture.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The Pronouncements of a Famous Historian Unwilling to Allow his Personality to Emerge By Dr. Laurence Raw C. Vann Woodward (1908-99) was an American intellectual historian with a particular interest in Southern history. He spent the majority of his academic career at Johns Hopkins followed by a long stint at Yale. After achieving considerable success with his first major work on Georgia politician Tom Watson, he produced a series of books on race relations, the most celebrated of which was THE STRANGE CAREER OF JIM CROW (1955), which argued that segregation was not a "natural" state of society but a late development during the 1890s in the post-Reconstruction era. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1982 for MARY CHESNUT'S CIVIL WAR, an edited version of Mary Chesnut's Civil War diary.Whether Woodward's influence extended much beyond academic circles is moot. Late on in his life he had a spat with Gore Vidal, who accused him of being one of those academics enjoying the privileges of his existence without actively engaging in the political realities of his time. Woodward was certainly interested in major issues such as racial equality, but the letters give little indication of any active involvement other than regular communicational exchanges with public figures such as Martin Luther King or Hillary Clinton. The letters are quite curious in terms of content. They reveal a lot about Woodward's incisive mind, as well as his capacity to analyze essays and books in exhaustive detail and offer constructive criticism as a result. On the other hand they tell us about Woodward as a person, other than his in-built reluctance to disclose his feelings in print. He lost his wife and son to cancer, but little reference is made to their passing, or to the effect that such tragedies might have had on his life. Nor do we learn much about the often difficult experiences of being a Southerner transplanted to the North. Woodward assumes a persona, of the sage pronouncing judgement on academic affairs as well as commenting on the political situation, but we do feel that he is very interested in active engagement; the kind of engagement that might put his comfortable living at risk.To be honest, many of the letters are interesting only insofar as they reveal the petty jealousies and/or rivalries of academia. Woodward is particularly hard on those colleagues that do not meet his high academic standards; nor does he allow for the fact that non-academics can make equally penetrating judgements on American history without the rigorous years of training experienced by most professors. As time goes by, he becomes increasingly skeptical of the ways in which the humanities are developing; he dislikes "theory" and oral history on the grounds that they do not seem sufficiently "academic." By the end of his life he had become rather cantankerous in his pronouncements, as if reluctant to move with changing times.Readers interested in the academic progress of American history in the mid-twentieth century might derive great benefit from this book, but to non-specialists it does seem somewhat parochial.

Thirty years of spirited school reforms have failed to improve our schools and instead have left our public school systems in disarray. Meanwhile, employment prospects for high school and college graduates are fading, and the public is losing faith in its schools. The education paradigm inherited from the Industrial Era is in crisis. In the last decade, however, the Internet and new Web 2.0 technologies have placed the entirety of human knowledge in the hands of everyone. What will our educational institutions make of this unprecedented flood of Web-based learning resources? How can schools be transformed to accommodate the new possibilities for personal and social learning? Leonard Waks gathers all the pieces of our current educational puzzle together in this groundbreaking book. Drawing on new organizational models grounded in complexity theory, Waks maps out an inspiring new paradigm for education in the Internet age, and connects all the dots in constructing detailed models for new schools-now transformed into "open learning centers." Finally, Waks details action steps readers can take to speed this transformative process along in their own locations.

Education 2.0: The LearningWeb Revolution and the Transformation of the School, by Leonard J. Waks

Review Few people understand the convergence of technology change like Leonard Waks. In Education 2.0 he brings us face-to-face with the contemporary revolution in learning. Many books have described these emerging learning technologies, but few have shown how they might be part of a transformational learning ecology. Education 2.0, true to its name, places them within a comprehensive conceptual model of an entirely new learning ecology. While previous attempts at such a broad synthesis of the new educational situation have been [made], Education 2.0 is the first to succeed. Professor Waks nails it! --Curt Bonk, Indiana UniversityEducation 2.0: The Learningweb Revolution and the Transformation of the School discusses the most significant paradigm shift in education in the contemporary era, its institutional effects, and its democratic potential. With the development of Web 2.0 technologies, Waks suggests that we have moved beyond the massification of the industrial paradigm to a new social learning model that has the potential to reawaken our public instincts for reform and radically transform our educational institutions. This is a highly recommended read. --Michael A. Peters, University of Illinois

About the Author Leonard J. Waks is Professor Emeritus of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Temple University, Philadelphia. Waks has earned doctorates in philosophy and organizational studies, and he taught at Purdue, Stanford, and Penn State before joining the Temple faculty. He is co-founder of the National Technological Literacy Conferences, and author of the book Technology’s School as well as more than 100 scholarly articles and book chapters.

Waks brings a formidable knowledge of education, philosophy, and organizational studies to bear upon the tipping points on which we find ourselves in society and particularly education. Rapid changes in society, such as deindustrialization, are coupled with equally dramatic changes in education, such as the emergence of web-based learning. Waks documents and analyzes these changes, and engages the reader with his lively writing style. In its breadth and depth of understanding of our present situation, especially in education and learning, Waks’s book is like no other. And, it is fun to read!

When my sons were younger I did the play dates with other moms. Now that my kids are at the pre-teen age, it is basically dropping them off for a few hours of fun at a friend's house. And in case of my one son, he has played with the exact same friend since pre-school. Reading Dr. Monastra's newest book has allowed me to expand my own focus on how I can help my son make and keep friends. Sometimes it's not just a confidence thing that 's missing but opportunity that's lacking. Rather then waiting for an innovative program or "professional" at school to lead a social skills group, I have begun to assemble a group of moms with similar concerns to try out the activities recommended in his book. The parents seem to be having as much fun as the kids, as we're all learning together. Loved the stories in the book and the comic strips were great! My kids thought so too!

Williams Dr. Monastra brings his decades of experience working with children and adults with ADHD to his life skills classes and his most recent book. The challenge of learning life skills such as presence, conversation, a growth mindset, grit, and caring for others are even more difficult for children with ADHD. Dr. Monastra's empathy, knowledge, and experience make his book a usable tool for parents and others who work with these children. He has a broad understanding of the causes of poor attention and its treatment.

If you want to help people learn from activities, exercises or experiences, this book is for you. This book fills a gap: it is the gap between doing an activity and learning from it. Plenty of books describe activities that are good for icebreaking, for team-building, for project management or for cross-cultural understanding, etc. A few of these books do give some limited advice about reviewing (or debriefing) the activities, such as: “How do you feel?” or "What have you learned?". But there is so much more that you can do as a facilitator than simply ask questions. This is a rare book for two reasons: It is about reviewing (How many books have you come across on this subject?) It is about reviewing actively.(Which makes it not just rare, but unique.) With the help of this book, you can make reviews at least as engaging as the activities you are reviewing. No more unwanted silences and no more superficial reviews. Just engaging and practical ways to help people learn from experience! How does that sound for a change?

Active Reviewing: A Practical Guide for Trainers and Facilitators, by Roger Greenaway, Bogdan Vaida, Calin Iepure

About the Author Meet the authorsAbout us ... One day in the summer of 2014, Călin Iepure travelled to Bucharest in search of new ideas to use in his work as a trainer. Călin had signed up for a two day trainer-training workshop with Roger Greenaway. During this workshop Călin got very excited about how he could use these new ideas in his work as a trainer. He then shared these ideas with Bogdan Vaida (a fellow trainer from Timișoara) and they both started experimenting with these dynamic training techniques. Soon their colleagues started showing an interest and they decided to invite Roger to provide a workshop in Timișoara in the spring of 2015. Over meals and coffee breaks, we started talking about making an online training course together. We quickly realised that in addition to our shared interest in making training more interactive, we each had a set of complementary skills: Călin's work with business start- ups and entrepreneurship; Bogdan's work with online training videos and Roger's niche providing training workshops in active reviewing skills and techniques. ... and a bit about the book After launching our online course in the summer of 2015, we decided to create a book version of the online course. You may find that this book is all you need, but at some point you may decide that you would like to take a look at the more detailed online course. We hope you find your journey into the world of active reviewing as rewarding as Călin found on his trip to the big city in the summer of 2014.May your future participants enjoy the new opportunities that active reviewing opens up for them. No more dull debriefs! --Roger Greenaway, Bogdan Vaida, Călin Iepure

By Amazon Customer If you want more than the dull old fashion question-and-answers reviewing methods for your trainings- this is the book you are looking for! It will offer you a diversity of methods which make the review an active experience in the mean time interesting, funny and useful for the trainees. You will learn how to use playing cards, ropes, a dummy remote-control and a dummy microphone and many more- all to make the review process more like a game and to make the content of your training stick to the participants. I liked not only the methods but also the light touches of humor that make the lecture very pleasant!

Seeds of Freedom is a remarkable case study of liberating education in the remote Guatemalan Maya indigenous village of Santa Maria Tzeja in the four decades since it was first settled in 1970. Clark Taylor's account begins at a time in which the majority of the village consisted of illiterate landless and land-poor peasant farmers working in conditions close to slavery. With the help of a Catholic priest, the village's founding pioneers were granted land, settled the village, established a school for their children, and began to prosper. By 2010 the village's emerging professionals were filling increasingly important social change roles at the local, regional, and national levels and nearly all children are educated with many to a university level. As such Santa Maria has come to exemplify the theory and practice of liberating education. The book tells the history of this remarkable community and reveals the transformative potential of the radical pedagogy of Paulo Freire and others. Santa Maria has thus become an example of dynamic liberating education, and its history has much to offer educators, students and solidarity activists throughout the world.

Seeds of Freedom: Liberating Education in Guatemala (Series in Critical Narrative), by Clark Taylor

Review Seeds of Freedom proves with insight and rigor how important the work of Freire and the project of liberating education is on a global level, especially in Latin America. Pedagogy as the practice of freedom takes on new meaning in this book and offers a historical and contextual understanding of the power of education when it is connected to social change. This is a powerful and important book and should be on everyone s reading list. --Henry Giroux, McMaster UniversitySeeds of Freedom is an extraordinary pedagogical tribute to a collective educational process, made possible by the unwavering commitment of a people to a liberating praxis for social change. Through on-going efforts by students, parents, and educators of the impoverished village of Santa Maria, a strong vision of liberatory education finds fertile ground to grow and evolve. Rooted in the philosophy of Mayan tradition, indigenous knowledge powerfully infuses life into this pedagogical struggle to recapture the human dignity of an oppressed community. In the midst of historical brutalities and the contradictions of everyday life, Clark Taylor weaves here an educational story of communal faith, hope, and perseverance a story that emerges from a tiny fragile seed in the countryside of Guatemala, to become a global testimony to the indomitable power of a determined people to transform their destiny. --Antonia Darder, Marymount University

About the Author Clark Taylor, PhD, is a founding faculty member of the College of Public and Community Service at the University of Massachusetts, Boston.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great book! By Richard A. Perras An engaging, informative and uplifting account of tragedy and ultimate success of young people in a remote village in Guatemala. Taylor describes the horrors of the destruction of the village of Santa Maria in the Civil War in 1982 and ends with the triumph of indigenous Maya students through education. It is, as the author modestly says, “…a story of liberating education and transnational cooperation…” but also much more. This book will resonate with anyone concerned with the current wave of thousands of unaccompanied minors from Central America crossing the southern border of the U.S.

It provides a valuable introducation to critical pedagogy, it is a window into the life of indigenous Guatemala over the last few decades, and it is an inspirational human story of international collaboration and solidarity.
