Excerpt from Adventures Among BooksOf the essays in this volume "Adventures among Books," and "Rab's Friend," appeared in Scribner s Magazine; and "Recollections of Robert Louis Stevenson" (to the best of the author's memory) in The North American Review. The essay on "Smollett" was in the Anglo-Saxon, which has ceased to appear; and the shorter papers, such as "The Confessions of Saint Augustine," in a periodical styled Wit and Wisdom. For "The Poems of William Morris" the author has to thank the Editor of Longman's Magazine; for "The Boy," and "Mrs. Radcliffe's Novels," the Proprietors of The Cornhill Magazine; for "Enchanted Cigarettes," and possibly for "The Supernatural in Fiction," the Proprietors of The Idler. The portrait, after Sir William Richmond, R. A., was done about the time when most of the Essays were written - and that was not yesterday.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Adventures Among Books (Classic Reprint), by Andrew Lang

About the Author Andrew Lang (March, 31, 1844 July 20, 1912) was a Scottish writer and literary critic who is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. Lang s academic interests extended beyond the literary and he was a noted contributor to the fields of anthropology, folklore, psychical research, history, and classic scholarship, as well as the inspiration for the University of St. Andrew s Andrew Lang Lectures. A prolific author, Lang published more than 100 works during his career, including twelve fairy books, in which he compiled folk and fairy tales from around the world. Lang s Lilac Fairy and Red Fairy books are credited with influencing J. R. R. Tolkien, who commented on the importance of fairy stories in the modern world in his 1939 Andrew Lang Lecture On Fairy-Stories.

A book for people who care about reading By Reliquiae In this Kindle version there are a few spacing issues between paragraphs, but otherwise there are few other mistakes in format. The annoying issue is that the Table of Contents is not active. However the Footnotes are. At the end of this review I've included the missing Location numbers for the chapter divisions for anyone who is interested. The book is a well-known collection of papers written in the late 19th and early 20th centuries about literature. Andrew Lang is best remembered as a poet, novelist, critic, and a contributor to anthropology. But he is probably most admired for his collections of fairy tales. Lang believed that booklovers should read what they enjoy and care about, and reading his Adventures Among Books opens up new directions for readers to follow.Even after more than a century has passed, lovers of good literature will still find much to glean from these essays. The first chapter, from which the title of the book is taken, is one of the most valuable. It's the most autobiographical, offering insight into Lang's life and literary tastes. He recalls for us his most vivid memories of the stories he read or heard. Lang especially treasured tales from his childhood, which he said "clung to my memory." He accounts for his profound love for books as a "gift given to me by the fairies." Indeed he was a fan of fairytales, believing that "a boy of five is more at home in Fairyland than in his own country." This perhaps accounts for his publication of 12 books of fairytales. Lang moves on from his childhood to describe his personal encounters with the classics and his bond with the world's great authors that he so admired. Most other chapters are interesting and valuable as well, although some are dated and others too esoteric to hold my concentration. His essay about his friend, Robert Louis Stevenson, was insightful, although there is better literary analysis to be found elsewhere. The same may be said about chapters concerning "Oliver Wendell Holmes" or "Mr. Morris's Poems" or "Mrs. Radcliffe's Novels." A few discussions, although probably compelling in their day, have less value now, unless one is a Lang scholar or still reads some of the works he cites. On the other hand, I am probably just revealing my own shallow interests and literary ignorance.I particularly enjoyed his chapter devoted to St. Augustine's Confessions. It is a fine essay to introduce and illuminate this classic work - at least until the closing paragraphs. When Augustine finally submits to Christ, Lang admits that that was the point for him that "the Saint becomes less interesting." While he regards Augustine's Confessions as "the most human of books," he is far less interested in it when it "strays into theology" following the saint's conversion. Earlier, Lang admitted to not having absorbed much of his Scottish Presbyterian upbringing. "I got no harm from "The Shorter Catechism," he writes in the first essay, "of which I remember little, and neither then nor now was or am able to understand a single sentence." Maybe if he really had learned his catechism he would have appreciated Augustine's theology more.Lang pays tribute to many other great writers throughout the book, among them the American author, Nathaniel Hawthorne. He was America's "classic author," says Lang. "His renown is unimpeached: his greatness is probably permanent, because he is at once such an original and personal genius, and such a judicious and determined artist."A final example of Lang's essays is his "Stories and Story-telling." Where do good stories come from? In the end, Lang is not entirely sure. "Fiction is a beautiful disease of the brain... Something, an incident or an experience, or a reflection, gets imbedded, incrusted, in the properly constituted mind, and becomes the nucleus of a pearl of romance." The essay is fascinating for its exploration of how one possessed of the "disease" might begin to write good stories. "What is the mysterious art by which these things are done? What makes the well-told story seem real, rich with life, actual, engrossing? It is the secret of genius, of the novelist's art, and the writer who cannot practise the art might as well try to discover the Philosopher's Stone, or to 'harp fish out of the water.'" Too bad for the rest of us.Each of the essays in this volume is instructive and most are worth the time it takes to read and unpack them. Andrew Lang's Adventures Among Books could easily form a guide or syllabus for a literature course, except for the author's own warning: "Distrust a course of reading! People who really care for books read all of them. There is no other course." Good advice for booklovers of any age.TOCPreface: Loc. 7Chapter I: Adventures Among Books, Loc. 7Chapter II: Recollections of Robert Louis Stevenson, Loc. 405Chapter III: Rab's Friend, Loc. 574Chapter IV: Oliver Wendell Holmes, Loc. 797Chapter V: Mr. Morris's Poems, Loc. 968Chapter VI: Mrs. Radcliffe's Novels, Loc. 1198Chapter VII: A Scottish Romanticist of 1830, Loc. 1391Chapter VIII: The Confessions of Saint Augustine, Loc. 1558Chapter IX: Smollett, Loc. 1710Chapter X: Nathaniel Hawthorne, Loc. 2104Chapter XI: The Paradise of Poets, Loc. 2217Chapter XII: Paris and Helen, Loc. 2303Chapter XIII: Enchanted Cigarettes, Loc. 2433Chapter VIV: Stories and Story-Telling, Loc. 2508Chapter XV: The Supernatural in Fiction, Loc. 2617Chapter XVI: An Old Scottish Psychical Researcher, Loc. 2694Chapter XVII: The Boy, Loc. 2809Footnotes: Loc. 2980

Having released the Seer Stone to Aphrodite, and surrendered herself to the Tulsa Police, she has isolated herself from her friends and mentors, determined to face the punishment she deserves―even if that means her body will reject the change, and begin to die. Only the love of those closest to her can save her from the Darkness in her spirit; but a terrible evil has emerged from the shadows, more powerful than ever…

Neferet has finally made herself known to mortals. Crowning herself a Dark Goddess, she is evil unleashed and is enslaving the citizens of Tulsa. The vampyres of the House of Night have banded with the police, and are gathering every last resource they have, but they know that no single vampyre is strong enough to vanquish her―unless that vampyre has the power to summon the elements as well as the ability to wield Old Magick. Only Zoey is heir to such power…but because of the consequences of using Old Magick, she is unable to help.

In the final novel in the House of Night series, an epic battle of Light versus Darkness will decide who is redeemed…and who is forever lost.

It didn't hold up to the rest honestly.. I wish now after finishing the series that I had not read this last book and just kept what I thought would happen to myself. I expected too much from the last in this series.I too was a Heath fan... Stark loves Z, I get that but really come on now. Heath was made a promise from Nyx and it wasn't fullfilled. Heath should have been redeemed and he should have gotten his girl.. Rephaim should have had been able to be human 24hrs a day as well. Atone one, atone them all.Neferet is bat sh*t crazy as always but come on the Nerd-Herd from previous books wouldn't have been lax in wanting to save those inside the Hotel. The addition of Lynette was definately not needed. The only part of the book I agree with is Kalona. He deserved what he got.I really wanted to like this book but I can't. What happens to them after the end... They all just leave???? Whatever.

And as much as I hate to admit it, I was drawn in and really got into the series. Things were really good up until Book 6 or 7. Once Zoey's Soul shattered things went downhill.Book 11 was a complete disappointment, and while this book "Redeemed" was better it still left a lot to be wanted. There was never any clarity on what will happen with the Red Fledglings, Erin is unnecessarily killed Heath comes back in Aroux, only to die at the end of this book, There is no clarity on what happens to Aphrodite, does she become a Vampire, is she human, why are her visions becoming more painful? Starks internal battle is never discussed again, nor is it ever revealed that Kalona was sneaking into Starks body to take advantage of Zoey. All of these things are left unsaid. The most frustrating part is that there seems to be no growth from the characters. They all seem just as unsure and immature as they did in book one, which makes some sense since barely a year has gone by in the series. But is still a hard pill to swallow.Never the less, the final battle was interesting enough, and the Kalona twist was enjoyable. I'll always appreciate the first couple of books and I wish the Cast luck in their next project.

18 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Rushed, So Much Left Open By The Book Faerie Minimal SpoilersThis series has been going downhill for awhile. My first issue (which has always been an issue from Book 1) is language/content vs. YA audience. It's written to the Twilight crowd, but the language, sexual content, drug use, etc is too much for even early high school in my opinion. My second issue got worse as the series went on: TOO MANY PROBLEMS. There are so many characters that each had a hoard of problems that none ever got resolved in a satisfactory way. A character with three problems would solve one and gain two more. Then a problem would seemingly disappear because we never hear about it again.Issue three was that the ending was rushed. All this buildup to a final battle that barely took 5 minutes. I had read somewhere that they were originally planning 15 books. I don't know if they realized they were going down in flames and we're trying to stop the bleeding, or what. It's always been pointed out that Kristen Cast was tasked with making the teenagers sound like teenagers, which apparently in their estimation means vapid and shallow. The only one who really pulled it off well was Aphrodite. She managed to sound teenaged, but witty and intelligent even if she owned her shallowness (which was obviously covering her pain - she was pretty much the least shallow character). The ending of who ends up with who was disappointing as well. It was too neat and clean with someone for everyone.Overall, this was a really good idea for a series that went terribly wrong in the execution phase.

Not only did the plot keep my attention all the way through, but also the descriptions were so vivid that I could practically smell India. I cared about the characters and kept wanting to know what choices they were going to make. I wouldn't be at all surprised if this novel won some awards.

The story is beautiful, sad and yet uplifting, it shows the strenght of the human soul. The description of India, of the different places, are an extra gift for someone ( like me ) who would love to visit those mystic places but so far didn't have the chance. I highly recommend this book.

Flanigan I have read all of Rachel Devenish Ford's books and I have really seen growth as an author and storyteller. A Traveler's Guide to Belonging offers a real sense of time and place, where we feel as if we are along for the journey. When Timothy, a very young husband and father, loses his wife and first love during childbirth, he wonders how he can go on. Through his physical journey in mystical India and his emotional travels to self-awareness, Timothy wonders if he is up to the task of fatherhood and whether he can fight through the pain to learn to love life again.Having lived in India herself, Ford (along with her husband and children) are themselves and her children have not lived the majority of their lives overseas. Their experiences in Intentional Communities in California, India and Thailand affords the author the ability to create a realistic world for Timothy, his friends and family. This was an excellent story and made me yearn for the opportunity to try living in another country.

Best PDF Ebook Classic French Course in English (Classic Reprint), by William Cleaver Wilkinson

Excerpt from Classic French Course in EnglishThe preparation of the present volume proposed to the author a task more difficult far than that undertaken in either of the two volumes chronologically preceding it in the group, The After-School Series, to which it belongs. Those volumes dealt with literatures limited and finished; this volume deals with a literature indefinitely vast in extent, and still in vital process of growth. The selection of material to be used was, in the case of the earlier volumes, virtually made for the author beforehand, in a manner greatly to ease his sense of responsibility for the exercise of individual judgment and taste. Long prescription, joined to the winnowing effect of wear and waste through time and chance, had left little doubt what works of what writers, Greek and Roman, best deserved now to be shown to the general reader. Besides this, the prevalent custom of the schools of classical learning could then wisely be taken as a clew of guidance to be implicitly followed, whatever might be the path through which it should lead. There is here no similar avoidance of responsibility possible; for the schools have not established a custom, and French literature is a living body, from which no important members have ever yet been rent by the ravages of time. The plan of this volume, together with the compass proposed for it, created the necessity of establishing from the outset certain limits to be very strictly observed. There could be no introductory general matter, beyond a rapid and summary review of that literature, as a whole, which is the subject of the book. The list of authors selected for representation must not include the names of any still living.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This is a quite pedantic book on 'comparative literature on French language', although quite captivating even for me, not knowing the language. I learnt that although French is a very rich language - the poetry part of the language is comparatively weak. There are discussions on a variety of 'Classic French Authors', the operative word being 'Classic' which means authors from a much older period. The authors are listed in the beginning after a short introduction of the book. The introduction itself is very informative, and I gained a good knowledge of the origin of the language. Among the authors listed, it turned out, that I am familiar with some of them. So I read on with interest. The writing is very scholarly yet understandable and for a student in comparative literature the writing is very helpful and informative. Overall I had a positive experience with the book. Next time I will make sure that the book I am getting is about learning French!!Book-loverAmazon verified purchase

My mistake. It's got some decent selections, but wasn't what I was looking for. I may change this review after I finish reading the collection, but thought I'd post my experience as there isn't much on the page to indicate otherwise for the casual browser.

I would prefer to have the original texts as well. So if one wants to have some talking pints about French classics this book helps. For learning the real material one should look somewhere else.

EXCERPT: She could feel him behind her, close but not quite touching—feel the warmth of him, the raw need. “Maggie,” he said, and she nearly whimpered. “Maggie. Look at me.” She swallowed and squeezed her fingers around the key card, coiling heat spreading through her pelvis. “I can’t.” His voice, a breathy murmur, ghosted across the soft skin of her neck beneath her ear. “Why?” It wasn’t really a question. It was a challenge. “Because I’ve got no control around you,” she admitted desperately, pleadingly, every ounce of her senses firing up for him. “Tell me to leave,” he murmured to her, and she felt it then—the shadow of a touch on the side of her neck, the very whisper of his tongue. “Tell me to walk away, and I’ll never bother you again.”

Maggie is a BBW with a good job, all be it not what her family wants for her, but she is independent. Hard working and loves her brother to a fault. She had a crush on a very delicious, very hot, very wealthy man that she should have never dare dream of, but fate has a way of saying screw that. She took fate’s offering and it did not turn to her liking when the offering walked out on her on their second date and then showed up with another thinner blond. To top all that, Mr. Delicious_Hot_Wealthy is one of her brother friends.Declan. What can I say? This man is delicious from the word go. He makes alpha male and wealthy look so good. He has a sharp mind and a keen wit. He knows what he wants but going about getting it has proved to be a bit difficult for him. Maggie has been a sweet obsession for him for years, yet she does not know this. Wilder make you want to dive in, pull up a comfy-n-cozy chair, nice warm blanket, and some quite to enjoy the offerings.I started just wanting to get a quick feel of the first chapter but was drawn in and done in under two hours. I so need MORE!!! When will it come?Alexa Wilder has delivered another five star read for me. I love the way she makes things work for the BBW, feisty, spunky, good hearted, insanely sweet and well rounded. She lets the family she loves pick and poke but she makes it through. There is something with the fact that Maggie knew who she was and what she wanted to be. She did not let the money of her family suede her any other way.Alexa Wilder has been a sucker for romance since she found her first Harlequin at a hospital rummage sale when she was thirteen. While she loves all forms of the written word (so much that she occasionally gets caught reading the cereal box at breakfast), love stories have always been her favorite.

By Amazon Customer I received an ARC of this book for an honest review.I will start by saying that this book grabbed my attention from the start and I didn't move until I hit the end. The storyline felt fresh, the characters were engaging, in a nutshell, I was completely engrossed.Maggie comes from a wealthy family. She doesnt fit their mold. She doesnt even try. She is a curvy beauty who is determined to make her own way - without their money. Her father left when she was young - leaving her with trust issues with all men except for her brother. Buy she has been crushing on Declan since she was a teenager. Declan, hot and sexy, one of the wealthy, a lawyer, and a man who has wanted Maggie for years. Both of them have insecurities. Maggie is sure Declan can't be serious about her - when they finally did go out, they made it through 1 1/2 dates when Declan wad an emergency and had to leave. Then the society pages has pix of him with somone else. Declan believes that Maggie wasnt serious, because he saw her with another man soon after their aborted 2nd date.Throw in a cousins wedding, a snobby aunt who is teying to set her up, a brother who rescues her from said aunt, an arrogant jerk of a doctor, missing drugs and the sudden urgent need for a lawyer and I was hooked.I loved both Maggie and Declan. Their insecurities made them real. I am in awe of writers who can, in just a few short pages have my complete attention with great writing, H/h that are relatable, secondary characters that fit the story, and a story that i can picture in my mind.Im not a fan on all of the series books with cliffhangers that require me to be patient while waiting for the "To be continued" part. First of all, I have no patience. Secondly, I read so many books, that I have been know to forget to remember that I am waiting for the next part of the story. Finally, Its painful (in an emotional I can't wait that long way) to wait when I have become emotionally invested in a book and it stops at a really good part. Anticipation does not work well with me. Like right now! Im trying to finish this review - but all that is in my mind is tht I want the next book and I want it now!!!Great writing, great story, awesome characters - sexy, curvy and hot. Its a quick read, but captivating. It is entertaining. And if a book entertains me, then it is a winner. Loved it - well loved everything except the expectation that I can wait patiently without pouting.

The Concept of Mind is a 1949 book by philosopher Gilbert Ryle that has been seen as a founding document in the philosophy of mind, which received professional recognition as a distinct and important branch of philosophy only after 1950.The Concept of Mind argues that "mind" is "a philosophical illusion hailing chiefly from Descartes and sustained by logical errors and 'category mistakes' which have become habitual." The work has been cited as having "put the final nail in the coffin of Cartesian dualism."

The Concept of Mind, by Gilbert Ryle

From the Inside Flap This now-classic work challenges what Ryle calls philosophy's "official theory," the Cartesians "myth" of the separation of mind and matter. Ryle's linguistic analysis remaps the conceptual geography of mind, not so much solving traditional philosophical problems as dissolving them into the mere consequences of misguided language. His plain language and esstentially simple purpose place him in the traditioin of Locke, Berkeley, Mill, and Russell.

About the Author Gilbert Ryle (1900-1976) was the Waynflete Professor of Metaphysical Philosophy at Oxford University from 1947-1971.

A Matter of Mind By Peter Reeve "The Concept of Mind" is one of the essential works of philosophy and one of the great books of the twentieth century. Western thought took a horrendous wrong turn with Cartesian dualism and it was not until Ryle's book in 1949 that we got back on track. Or at least should have done, for the idea that we are two separate entities - mind and body - still pervades, and muddies, our thinking, whether philosophical, theological or everyday. Some of Ryle's followers have extended his ideas to the point of distortion, and would have us believe that mind and consciousness actually do not exist. Don't let such behaviorist extremism put you off. Ryle's feet were always more firmly on the ground. He defines the concept of mind, not invalidates it.He has a lively, readable style (of how many philosophers can you say that?) and although a lot of his ideas do not have the novelty that they would have had half a century ago, this is still the best book with which to begin an investigation of the nature of mind and consciousness.

34 of 37 people found the following review helpful. The great Classic of Oxford Ordinary Language Philosophy By C. Gardner In a sense, this book is a mirror to the problems covered in Wittgenstein's "Philosophical Investigations"--albeit with tighter arguments and far less meandering than Wittgenstein's groundbreaking work (this was published three years before Wittgenstein's posthumous PI). Both men were dedicated to freeing philosophy from what Ryle terms "category errors"--misapplications of the ordinary referential scope of a given term ("mind" as a concept which must necessarily oppose "substance" for instance--this duality forces us to ascribe and essentialize qualities to the incorporeal along the same lines as that of substance, by giving it attributes on the linguistic model of physical objects) These misapplications have led philosophers into vast problems which, by their very nature as linguistic misuses, are unsolvable (but not dis-solvable). Parts of it will provoke cries of "behaviorism!", but Ryle included a chapter near the end distancing his stance from Skinner et al. (how well he manages in this is debatable!) Brilliant, straightforward, and elegant, this is one the best works of 20th-century philosophy.

26 of 33 people found the following review helpful. A Classic of Philosophy of Mind By JNeeley@mail.utexas.edu Gilbert Ryle's classic philosophical work, The Concept of Mind, is now best remembered for the least philosophical part of it, the rhetorical dubbing of Descartes mind/body dualism as the "dogma of the ghost in the machine." Ryle's own particular brand of philosophical behaviorism hasn't weathered all that well, and so this book's surviving interest is primarily as a negative work. Nevertheless, the book is interesting as a crucible for Cartesians and those interested in the philosophical merits of the Cartesain theory of mind.Ryle's book is chauk full of arguments, long ones, short ones, simple ones, subtle ones, with a particular predominance of infinite regresses. Even if you think, as I do, that many of these arguments are misguided, you will still be put through a variety of mental gymnastics as you try to diagnose the various faults they hide. One note of caution, because many of Ryle's arguments are of the ordinary language variety, his linguistic distance from us (the book is over 50 years old, and British to boot) does hinder understanding. It was not always clear to me whether Ryle was misusing a word, or whether its use is different for us than it was for him.

An exploration of an overlooked consequence of the obesity crisis: unsatisfying and dysfunctional love lives

With 2 out of every 3 Americans overweight or obese, scientists are studying how excess fat changes physical and mental health, demographers are calculating how it's shortening life spans, and economists are debating the impact it has on America's productivity and global competitiveness. But how weight affects intimacy and sexuality is barely discussed.

Yet, it's a question of high importance for the tens of millions of Americans who are overweight or obese and having difficulty sexually and romantically. It is changing and complicating the mating game and married life alike, stunting the ability of young people to find happiness and tipping some heavy, but otherwise happy, couples into divorce. For many, a larger body has meant a more troubled mind: a decline in sexual quality, an increase in self-loathing, and a tendency to let these factors stand in the way of love.

In XL Love, Varney travels the country and tells the personal stories of men and women who are experiencing what millions of others feel every day, along with the stories of those who are in the business of helping them: physicians, researchers, scientists, psychologists, sociologists, and more. Analytic and immersive, personal and eye opening, XL Love tackles the question: How is sex changing in American as the shape of Americans changes?

Compelling Book Club Pick -- Consider Pairing XL Love with Salt Sugar Fat By Green Vista Pets At first glance, an examination of how obesity affects love and sex may seem like an unusual choice for a book club. But when Varney reveals that two out of three Americans are either obese or overweight and 6.6% of the population had a BMI over 40 between 2000 and 2010, this topic becomes not only relevant but critical. Sarah Varney, who reports on health policy for media outlets including National Public Radio, New York Times, Washington Post , and USA Today, has created a compelling exploration about how the epidemic of obesity affects and transforms the most intimate and meaningful aspects of life.XL Love begins in Jackson, Mississippi, first in a neonatal intensive care unit dedicated to keeping the newborns of mothers with diabetes and chronic hypertension alive --"the ultimate collision of fat and sex" -- and then moves to prom night, using a powerful metaphor of kudzu to illustrate how obesity has quietly invaded the population. Mississippi is the perfect place to begin this journey since nearly half of the elementary children and teens are overweight or obese. As a result, being "thick" is more accepted than in other places. The changes wrought by excess weight -- early puberty, with girls as young as 5 and 6 years old developing pubic hair and beginning their period as early as first or second grade -- occur years before they are ready mentally or emotionally. But prom night in Mississippi is only the beginning of XL Love, which covers how obesity affects online dating, first loves, marriage, and even Las Vegas. The effect of losing weight on a relationship is a particularly touching chapter. Many of the findings in XL Love are alarming, but also thought-provoking. Any book club looking for a pick that will generate conversation will not be disappointed and might consider a "cause and effect" pairing of XL Love with Michael Moss's Salt Sugar Fat.

Salas This books reads like watching one of those engrossing documentary movies - colorful, vivid, and compelling. I was thoroughly engaged and moved while reading this book all while learning so much about the topic (without feeling like I was drudging through a dry text book). In fact, it was quite the opposite. I love that this book comes at the topic of sex and obesity from multiple different ways and weaves in so many real people's life stories and experiences. Speaking of which, wow, I'm so impressed at how honest and open the people interviewed for the book were and how compassionately the author wrote about them. I wasn't sure if this was going to be a "bigger is beautiful book" or "bigger is bad" book and for me it was neither of those - it was more like an impartial presentation of the science, the psychology, the sociology, and, most importantly, the human story behind this topic. It definitely got me thinking about how my own biology (whether its weight, age, stress, etc) has been working for and/or against me over the years and its been interesting to think about how it has impacted my own thoughts, actions and relationships (sometimes without even being conscious of it). Bottom line, this is a book that I keep thinking about it even though its been a few weeks since I've finished it.

By Amazon Customer Let me start by saying what this book isn't: It isn't treacly, it isn't self-help and it isn't prurient. Sarah Varney nails the science on the obesity epidemic and its medical, public health and public policy implications, and she takes the story into a new direction with personal narratives. It is extremely well written and researched, and it belongs on the same reading lists as "Fast Food Nation."

Gives Parents a Guide to Help their Teens with today's High Tech Crisis By Todd Basche Some books speak to you as if the author is right next to you, telling you the story. Joani Geltman’s A Survival Guide to Parenting Teens, provides the reader with genuine, intelligent, useful information presented in such an accessible format it’s like having Joani with you, coaching you along. And while the author’s style is warm, smart and humorous, she also understands the critical nature of todays’ issues facing both parents and teens, and she takes it all seriously while explaining what kids are actually experiencing that may drive them to make dangerous choices, and what you as a parent can actually do to protect your teen. She offers parents the actual words yto use with kids,, a “script” of sorts, from the heart. This book is a gem, a must read for today’s parents who are faced with critical issues no one could have predicted for this century..

Straight, common-sense talk about discipline By BostonWriter I've never been one to read parenting how-to books (mothering a large family has been more about on-the-job training). But when I heard Joani Geltman speak at my local bookstore, I knew this would be the exception. Practical, no-nonsense, funny and wise, she's like the friend you wish you could meet for coffee every week. Her short entries about 70+ hot button areas of parenting teens (especially including smartphones) are easily digestible, and felt to me like a comforting second opinion on my gut feeling. I keep it on the nightstand. And I don't mind if the kids see it.

Such a valuable book even though my kids are still in elementary school By Lisa Mom of 2 While my kids are a few years away from the teen years, I want to know about what issues parents are facing with their teenagers now, considering how much things have changed since I was a teen in the 90's.Seriously - Facebook, smartphones, and even digital cameras didn't exist when I was a teen. Sheesh, I remember when CDs, caller ID, and giant cell phones first came out! I didn't even use the Internet until I was in college.Back then it was harder to share the daily details of your life with anyone else but those closest to you. But so much is different now, though of course, many of the core issues remain (drugs, sex, money) but in new ways.A Survival Guide to Parenting Teens: Talking to Your Kids About Sexting, Drinking, Drugs, and Other Things That Freak You Out is a valuable guidebook filled with humor and advice that all parents should read, regardless of how old their kids are. It's organized into 10 sections and covers 80 topics from smartphones to new social media sites to teens talking back to "the bad seed friend" and so much more. This is an ideal guidebook for busy parents (who isn't?) as each chapter is cleverly titled by the issue, so it's not a book that needs to be read cover-to-cover...it can be easily opened up to whatever issue you're facing! And I love how simply she organizes each chapter: First she breaks down each issue by starting with "Here's the Problem," then "Why It's a Problem" (to help you understand what's going on), and ending with "Here's the Solution."As a mom I have found this book amazingly eye-opening and helpful to prepare for that stage in our lives. Like chapter 63: "Icky New Social Networking Sites...Beware!" Did you know about websites like Omegle, com, Chatroulette, com, or Ask.fm? Imagine your teen talking (& possibly more) via their computer with complete strangers or anonymously criticizing or bullying someone. It's amazing what teen-targeting sites exist out there!I recommend A Survival Guide to Parenting Teens as it's full of so much down-to-earth advice for all parents, and is so informative for parents with pre-teens to help them better prepare for and understand their child's development.
