Presently, there is not a book quite like Get A Whiff Of This. Books have been written about cosmetic ingredients, yet most people are not aware of the serious, harmful health effects of fragrance chemicals due to false advertising, failure to bear warning labels, and lack of media attention. Millions of people are disabled from repeated exposures to these deleterious products. Synthetic fragrances are ubiquitous in the U.S., and avoidance is nearly impossible unless a person remains housebound. Many people are under the false impression that perfumes are derived from flowers and other natural sources. Get A Whiff Of This will educate people and, therefore, give readers the knowledge they need in order to protect their health and the health of their loved ones. Incidents of Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS), which has become an alarmingly growing epidemic in the U.S., asthma, and central nervous system and neurological disorders are on the rise. By A Customer Until I read this book I had no idea as to how fragrances and chemicals have so severely affected the health of so many, nor did I realize that we are ALL being poisoned unknowingly. This book "tells it like it is" including the author's own testimony as to how her life has changed, how confined she is by not being able to be out in public places due to all the fragrances and other chemicals everywhere. There also is documentation and research done on the subject to verify and stress this seemingly unknown growing problem. Hopefully people will read this, as I have, and change their habits before they too suffer the drastic consequences experienced by so many.

6 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Get a Whiff of This by Connie Pitts By Flora Newsom-Stringer A must read. I've spoken against all the perfumed scents and cleaners always and my words seemed always to fall on deaf ears. All scents of every kind make me instantly ill; yet, people will respond to me, "Oh, I like that." If you read the real truth exposed in Connie Pitts' book, you will help clean the air we all breathe. Those sents truly do belong in the toxic waste dump as she says. How many people had to die from cigarettes and asbestos before those items were finally touted. Scents is a multi-billion dollar business and government agencies do not want to speak out against constituents desires; they are willing to let millions die and cost health insurance mega millions, individual costs skyrocket, pain and suffering continue to perpetuate the sale of the poison odors! Read this book, please, then help expose the real truth about the scents poisoning our air.I did purchase the book on Amazon! Absolutely awesome and informative Book.

9 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Get a Whiff of This By Connie M. Pitts People have been wearing perfumes and using various other scented products for decades. What changed? Perfumes are *not* made from natural sources, nor are they safe, as falsely advertised to be. They contain hundreds of deleterious chemicals, having maimed and disabled millions of people -- people of all ages. Given the fact that perfumes do no bear warning labels, I wrote this book in hopes to educate people about the truth behind an industry that has no regard for health and a government that condones it. Please read my book and demand safer products. You and you children deserve much better. Perfumes are only nice if you enjoy slathering yourself in greasy petrochemicals, neurotoxins, hazardous waste and nearly 100 carcinogens, just to mention a few of their products' contents. Get a Whiff of This will enlighten you to the truth. Personally, I wish someone would have informed me years ago, as I'm a former perfume user.

Even though I wasn't raised by my grandma, she was a very important example of unconditional love and endless service. I think in the world today, where more and more children are being raised in whole or in part by people other than their biological mom and dad, it is important for them to realize that there are other kids out there like them. I recommend this book to anyone who was ever loved by a grandma :)

By 2Luvcoffee I love to see a children's book available to speak to those kids whose sole caregiver is their grandparent, or other parent that is not their biological parent. There are all different kinds of families, this book touches on one that is becoming more and more the norm. It is touching and vibrant and reaches the heart and soul. It makes a perfect gift for any caregiver... Don't miss this one!

Lectures and Biographical Sketches, by Ralph Waldo Emerson, James Elliot Cabot

About the Author Herman Melville said that Ralph Waldo Emerson possessed a "self-conceit so intensely intellectual that at first one hesitates to call it by its right name," though he later admitted Emerson was "a great man." Both were probably true. The Sage of Concord gave more than 1500 speeches in his lifetime, and Self-Reliance is probably his most important work.

It's been quite a struggle this year so far and I had been considering putting both of my kids back in school.....until I saw Lee's email about her newest book. I purchased and started reading it immediately. The words in this book were exactly what God wanted me to hear at that moment! I will continue pressing on through this journey with my kids!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I love Lee Binz By Sara I love Lee Binz! I love everything she writes. It's like she is writing directly to me and only me. The LORD uses her to show me things that I would never see on my own. She writes truthfully, and gets straight to the point. I like that, and a hint of humor from experience, and lessons learned. Lee does write from experience, which makes me all the happier to read and learn that I am, in fact, not alone. And she will always be right there to cheer you on and make it all clear. I like this particular book because it's a once a week devotional, (that I actually read almost every day and enjoy every single day!), and she makes it feel so personal. I am homeschooling a Kindergartner and a Second Grader, so my family isn't even close to being ready for High School, but it all still pertains to us. Especially me. About 3-4 times a month I feel like I am in well over my head. And every time I say so to my husband, he reminds me to pick up The Good Book and read some more of Faith by Lee. He enjoys Faith, as well! Everything she writes, I put to good use in our homeschool. She knows her stuff, and I trust her honesty. She is constantly reminding me to take our homeschooling and life one day at a time. Just as the LORD intended. Lee is humble and makes me feel ever so confident that I can do it, too! With God all things are possible, and with Miss Lee Binz, I feel like I'm sitting down to visit with a friend.

Multiple Voices Speak of the Reality of Life As An Adoptee By gayle h. swift Adoption is complex and this anthology of adult adoptee voices enriches our understanding of the adoptee experience. Each story is unique and offers insight into what adoptees need as they parse a lifetime affected by adoption. The authors share with courage and honesty. Much of their experiences is contrary to long-established cultural myths and thus sere an important reframing of adoption practices and adoptive parenting. After all, who better to help us understand adoption than those who live it first hand? As an adoptive parent I appreciate the authors' willingness to share their hard-earned wisdom. It helps me to better parent and to better support other adoptive families.--Gayle H. Swift, "ABC Adoption & Me"

That sums up the new book from the National Center for Fathering (www.fathers.com), It's Great Being a Dad. Carey Casey, Jay Payleitner, and Brock Griffin have put together a collection of their essays on fatherhood to help us fathers be more effective in our role. Covering a wide array of subjects, It's Great Being a Dad has something for every dad to improve as a father and to enjoy his children more. The good: In their work with NCF, these three writers have gathered anecdotes and academic studies to illustrate their points and encourage fathers at every stage of life. In 93 short chapters, they have plenty of wisdom to share. Some of the high points and recurring themes: be intentional, make your kids a priority, pray for your kids, take time for them, be committed. The chapters can be read in any order, and take just a couple of minutes to read. The bad: With the bullet-point nature of the 93 chapters of the book, there's not much flow to it. I suspect these chapters were written as e-mail or newsletter updates, for which they would be perfect. Gathered into book form, they read like, well, a random collection of e-mail or newsletter updates. I realize that sounds like a petty criticism, but I read the book cover-to-cover, which is the wrong way to read this book. . . .In terms of the actual content, I fully endorse the authors' message. Their advice and encouragement is spot-on. Each father who reads It's Great Being a Dad will find at least a few essays that hit home. Almost all of them will ring true with any dad. I appreciate the NCF and this book, because even though it's great being a dad, it's not always easy being a dad. It's Great Being a Dad is full of great reminders for me as I try to be the best dad I can be.Thanks to NetGalley for the complimentary electronic review copy!

Excerpt from The Life of William BlakeSince the publication of this work in 1863 the position of William Blake in the worlds of Art and Literature has greatly changed. As a poet he stands on a level with his peers, yet apart from them - a lonely voice before the dawn; the singer of the silent hour, before a wonderful burst of lyric melody hailed the birth of the nineteenth century. As a painter his fame has spread more slowly, owing to the difficulty of seeing his works, which are still, for the most part, in private collections: nevertheless they now find an ever-widening circle of admirers.Every scrap of Blake's long-neglected writings is eagerly sought for and discussed; the despised pictures emerge from the cellars and attics where they have spent the greater part of a century and find their way into salerooms, with results highly gratifying to their bewildered owners.William Blake has come to his own at last, extolled alike by poets and painters as one of the supreme magicians of the pen and the brush. For, in the case of this artist, his two chosen forms of expression must be studied side by side; Blake the poet and Blake the painter must both speak to us in their different languages, the one amplifying and sustaining the other, until we begin to know the third Blake, Blake the seer, the philosopher, and the teacher.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Life of William Blake (Classic Reprint), by Alexander Gilchrist

Amazon.com Review Of William Blake, William Wordsworth said, "There is something in the madness of this man which interests me more than the sanity of Lord Byron and Walter Scott." Blake was, after all, known to report on his "conversations" with such dead notables as the great Milton. He felt no constraint in sharing the bold content of his vivid imagination. "Once [he] was walking down Cheapside with a friend," Alexander Gilchrist writes. "Suddenly he took off his hat and bowed low. 'What did you do that for?' 'Oh! that was the Apostle Paul.'" This full-length study of the visionary artist and poet, first published in 1863, is credited with bringing to light not only the unique genius of William Blake, but his body of work.

When Gilchrist wrote this critical biography, the world was largely ignorant of William Blake (1757-1827). Most of his works--visual and poetic--were "never published at all ... [and] Blake's poems were ... not even printed in his life-time; simply engraved by his own laborious hand." The first-edition printing of Songs of Innocence and Experience, for example, consisted of slightly more than 20 copies. Nevertheless, Blake was not spared the ironic fate of so many posthumously honored artists. At the time of Gilchrist's writing, "Blake drawings, Blake prints fetch prices which would have solaced a life of penury, had their producer received them."

Of course, it's no surprise that The Life of William Blake is drenched in the style peculiar to the late 19th century, as if proclaimed in an echo chamber where lofty and pious tones vie with the sentimental. Still, who isn't drawn into the central tragedy of Blake's life? He had the capacity to become a great public and religious poet, but instead turned in upon himself, gaining neither reputation nor a following. Blake was simply not of his time, "partly by choice; partly from the necessities of imperfect education."

Although in paperback, this volume suggests antiquity--the type fonts are reminiscent of those used in the dusty, old tomes found in Grandma's attic. Chapter titles reflect the 19th-century sensibility ("A Boy's Poems," "Struggle and Sorrow," "Mad or Not Mad?"). The 39 chapters also reveal Gilchrist's exhaustive study of Blake's life. His report of Blake's first vision at the age of 8 reveals the 19th-century tone: "Sauntering along, the boy looks up and sees a tree filled with angels, bright angelic wings bespangling every bough like stars." Unabridged and illustrated with 40 black-and-white photographs of Blake's engravings, this first critical biography will interest the Blake scholar wishing to add a more period feel to his or her body of research (100 years separate Gilchrist from his subject), as well as the Blake fan in the mood for a courtly and doting guide. --Hollis Giammatteo

19 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Rumor From Another World By Gianmarco Manzione Gilchrist had two things going for him as Blake's first biographer. He remains the only one of them all who actually got to talk to people who knew Blake, who were friends with he and his wife. Secondly, he was alert enough to recognize Blake's genius despite the neglect with which it continued to be treated even as Gilchrist wrote the book. Just as Harold Bloom suggests that Emerson proved his own genius by being the first to recognize Whitman's, the same ought to be said of Gilchrist. Throughout Gilchrist's account, he cites conversations and letters exchanged with various friends of Blake, from Samuel Palmer to Crabb Robinson and others. Palmer serves up a gorgeous and sensitive portrait of Blake in a letter to Gilchrist, while Gilchrist's copious quoting of Robinson's talks with Blake are ceaselessly fascinating. To read this first of countless Blake biographies before one of the more recent ones is to strap yourself into a time machine and launch from one world to entirely another. Writing in the 1860s, Gilchrist's language reflects just how jaded we've become over time. Full of purple but no less delightful prose, Gilchrist's often adoring book stops at nothing to ensure the sanctity of his subject. One of Blake's early and comparatively minor "Song" poems from the "Poetical Sketches" is described as possessing "shy evanescent tints and aroma as of pressed rose-leaves." Yet for all the book's haughtiness, it is Gilchrist's fascinating renunciation of criticism that most distinguishes him from we post-moderns: "Criticism is idle. How analyze a violet's perfume, or dissect the bloom on a butterfly's wing?" It would be a long way to Freud, Brooks, Frye, Vendler and Bloom. While Gilchrist often goes to boring lengths in describing Blake's paintings and engravings (as in the tedious "Supplementary" chapter at the end), it is a good thing he did decide to lay off the criticism, as Gilchrist often reveals a complete and astonishing inability to fathom so much of Blake's work. He repeatedly surrenders to the abstractness of Blake's epics, condemning Jerusalem's language as "words empty of meaning to all but him who uttered them" and says of Blake's "Milton" that "few are the readers who will ever penetrate beyond the first page or two." But it is the book's charm that designates it a literary monument. "Fully to appreciate the poetry as the lad Blake composed in the years 1768-77. let us call to mind the dates at which first peeped above the horizon the cardinal lights which people our modern poetic heavens," Gilchrist carries on at the book's onset. The author often blurs the line between eloquence and coherence early on, but soon, as if the immensity of Gilchrist's project gradually wore him down, the book assumes a far more pedestrian tone and becomes all the more wrenching a read because of it. The book's most powerful moment comes in a chapter called "Personal Details" which, if you can sift through Gilchrist's romantic elaborations, makes for a singularly moving document of Blake, the man and the artist, including such meticulously vivid observations as to his clothes, the shape of his head and nose, the look in his eyes, the way he carried his five-foot-six frame. "his clothes were threadbare," Gilchrist writes, "and his gray trousers had worn black and shiny in front, like a mechanic's. Out of doors, he was more particular, so that his dress did not, in the streets of London, challenge attention either way." These details along with those offered by many of the Blake acquaintances Gilchrist was able to interview throughout the book make it an indispensable document of a deeply poignant and fascinating life.

It is a book that children will be able to relate to and understand as they journey through life.Children get so close to their grandparents. Talasi was no exception. She spent a lot of time with her grandmother on a mesa in Arizona. She loved the peace and quiet of her home and she loved her grandmother. One day her life changed forever and she had to move to the city. Not only did she lose her grandmother who she loved with all her heart but she also had to adapt to a new school and start a life in a large city.Talasi was very resilient and she did make a new life for herself. Talasi does this by remembering the stories and songs that her grandmother shared with her. She carries her grandmother in her heart every day and that gets her through the tough times. The illustrations in this book are absolutely awesome and inspiring. I have never seen a children's book with quite so much detail and splendid color which brings the story to life. The art work is also very expressive. What a GREAT book for children! It is a picture book that will be enjoyed by children and adults of all ages for many years.

A loving picture book By jb having already beena fan of Cromwell after her earlier books (Are You Listening,Potbelly?, Wiggle-Dee-Dee, and Splash Puddle Splash) I was excited to see that she has written another book for young children. Talasi is a wonderful story about a young Hopi girl named Talasi, who lived on a mesa in Arizona with her grandmother. One day Talasi learned that she would have to move to the city, which meant that she would not only have to leave behind her life with her grandmother, but she also have to go to anew school and make new friends in a big city. In short, her life would change from everything she knew and loved.Talasi's grandmother, however, had given her the tools to start over. By remembering the stories and songs that her grandmother taught her she was able to keep her grandmother and their shared traditions in her heart. These memories helped her to adjust to her new life and to get through the struggles she sometimes faced. It's a story about love and loss, and also about how to begin again. The illustrations in this book are simply wonderful. The pictures bring the story to life...one can almost picture oneself with Talasi as she goes through her days. The colors and the details are beautifully done. This is a great children's book, a story that can be shared with children and grandchildren. Cromwell has once again found a way to touch the hearts of children!

I got this book for my brother and sister-in-law who have a daughter in high school with the intention of just skimming through before sending it on. To my surprise, it hooked me. Loved the preface that told how the author went from accountant to educational consultant simply by identifying a need and putting in lots of hard work to learn about and fill a need all too real for millions of families with children heading toward college. By the time I finished the book I wished it had been available to me when my kids were heading to college and I wished it had been available to send to my brother sooner. Easy to read, entertaining and informative.

I like how Jamie also makes you come to grips with reality on a pre-college teen's motivational concerns and the parental role in guidance. Very good book...you can tell she's an expert. I have nothing at all negative to say about this book. Jamie personally helped a great friend of mine get her kids into Vanderbilt, Auburn and Carnegie Mellon and my friend didn't go broke!

From bestselling author Jenny Gardiner: Abbie Jennings is Manhattan's top food critic until her expanding waistline makes staying incognito at restaurants impossible. Her cover blown on Page Six of the New York Post, her editor has no choice but to bench her—and suggest she use the time off to bench-press her way back to anonymity. Abbie’s life has been built around her career, and therefore around celebrating food. Forced to drop the pounds if she wants her primo gig back, Abbie must peel back the layers of her past and confront the fears that have led to her current life. PRAISE FOR SLIM TO NONE: “With a strong yet delightfully vulnerable voice, food critic Abbie Jennings embarks on a soulful journey where her love for banana cream pie and disdain for ill-fitting Spanx clash in hilarious and heartbreaking ways. As her body balloons and her personal life crumbles, Abbie must face the pain and secret fears she’s held inside for far too long. I cheered for her the entire way.” – Beth Hoffman, New York Times bestselling author of Saving CeeCee Honeycutt "Jenny Gardiner has done it again - this fun, fast-paced book is a great summer read." – Sarah Pekkanen, New York Times bestselling author of The Opposite of Me "Satisfying as a Thanksgiving dinner at Mom's... Jenny Gardiner's heroine gives us a sarcastic but provocative look at our love-hate relationship with food. You'll eat this up in one sitting.” – Ad Hudler, bestselling author of Househusband and Man of the House

54 of 54 people found the following review helpful. Funny, touching, left me hungry for more By Richard E. Spilman Jenny Gardiner's new novel, Slim to None, starts with a marvelous premise. Abby Jenning's, the food critic for a major New York newspaper, eats her way out of her job. One of the job requirements of reviewing restaurants is to remain incognito. After a photo of her appears in a competing newspaper, and her girth makes the prospect of disguising herself unlikely, her editor reassigns Abby to a desk job for six months. In that time she needs to lose weight, as well as come to terms with her relationship with food, her husband and a family she didn't know existed. She is assisted in her efforts by a homeless man who may not be as he seems, her dog Cognac, and a philandering friend. She must also do battle with a decidedly sneaky and corrupt colleague, who is standing in for her as restaurant reviewer and wants her job on a permanent basis. The book is very funny, often unexpectedly touching and insightful. It also includes recipes at the end of many of the chapters. Overall it left me hungry for chicken and crab with cheese in phyllo and for more of Jenny Gardner's writing. Jenny Gardiner's Slim to None is simply great fun.

As someone who isn't a twenty-something but still likes "Chick Lit", I appreciated that the main character was a little older and contemplating some major life issues. It's a very entertaining and easy read with more depth/drama (but no tears, promise!) than typical in these types of books. I thought it was a light read that was resolved - but not predictably - at the end. At the same time, there's room for more to come, so I hope the author writes more books in the series! One of the best books in this genre that I've read in a while. (Agreeing with previous reviewers, there are a few minor editing errors; if 4.5 rating was possible, with the 1/2 star reduction based only on this.)

25 of 26 people found the following review helpful. Slim to None By Samantha J Abbie Jennings loves her job as Manhattan's top food critic- until her identity is revealed and her unflattering picture with ever-expanding waistline is splashed across the newspapers. She becomes the joke of the town as the overweight food lover, and promptly loses her job at the New York Post since she can no longer go incognito to restaurants. Abbie takes this opportunity to finally go on that diet and shed some pounds, but struggles with motivation and the reasoning behind her relationship with food. To add to Abbie's problems, she is going through a difficult time with her husband, who is trying to persuade her to leave the city and finally start a family. It takes the guidance of an unusual friend to finally help Abbie see what she really wants out of life.Slim to None by Jenny Gardiner is a good story. I didn't get real invested in the main character, and some off the story lines seemed just a bit off for me. I did like the plot, and the descriptions of some of the delectable dishes made me start eating while reading, but it just wasn't enough. Sometimes, Abbie's character came off as incredibly selfish, never really listening to her husband and continually doing things the way she wanted. There is also a best friend in the story, who I never could quite figure out what she was doing there. She popped up at random times, and during most of the meat of the story, she wasn't mentioned at all, only to return once again at the end. I found myself confused throughout the duration, as the writing was a bit all over the place and jumping from scene to scene without any real fluidity. Like I said earlier, I did like the story, I thought it was interesting though not necessarily unique, and I believe some good life lessons can be taken away from the main character's troubles. Slim to None won't be on my Favorites List, but I think some other chick lit lovers will be able to appreciate this story.
