I highly recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys thrilling stories about street/stage magic, with charismatic characters and a By April Wood What’s It About?“If only her father’s magic wands were real and she could wave all of this away.”Christina Davenport is minding her own business in yoga class, when a charming and persuasive magician sidles up next her, promising her a world of magic and money. Despite her past traumas and bad experiences with magic, she considers and accepts the position of Reynaldo The Magnificent’s Assistant, Teeny.Devon Park is a medical resident at Mass General whose past weighs heavily around his neck. When he stumbles upon a street performance on Atlantic Avenue with his young nephew, his Doctor side kicks in and he worries about the ‘juggling lady’ who is covered with bumps and bruises.Christina practices and practices, her dream to be on stage one day, and not performing alongside a street hack. When Reynaldo gets wind of this he draws a line in the sand… what he isn’t aware of, is that the Dr. who has been watching them has a dark past, and he isn’t afraid to use it to protect Christina…My ThoughtsFirst of all, I loved the themes of street magic and illusion in this novel! It was such a fun and unique way to bring the characters together. I enjoyed the magic tricks and costumes, and can see how someone, like Christina Davenport, could be caught up in the glitz and glamour of performing arts!I really enjoyed the characters, too. Christina is highly sympathetic and someone who you want to route for. I was really surprised by the plot twist of one of the major characters who turned villain. –DID NOT SEE THAT COMING!The world building was great. The story takes place in Boston, and mentions major landmarks like Commonwealth St, Atlantic Avenue, and Quincy Market to name a few. :) Anyone who enjoys Boston will be excited to live vicariously through this novel, (as long as you don’t mind a juggling pin to your face every once in awhile!)The plot was steady with several unpredictable twists and a surprising romance. I enjoyed how everything came together. :)I highly recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys thrilling stories about street/stage magic, with charismatic characters and a subplot of romance! 5 stars! ★ ★ ★ ★ ★In the interest of full disclosure, I received a copy of A Sudden Gust Of Gravity in exchange for a fair, thoughtful, and honest book review. This in no way swayed my opinion or rating.Full Book Review: https://aprillwood.wordpress.com/2015/11/11/awrw-book-review-%F0%9F%8E%A9-%F0%9F%90%87-a-sudden-gust-of-gravity-by-author-laurie-boris-laurieboris/

Hooked my interest in the character's plight By Candace Williams This is the fifth novel I've read by Laurie Boris (the others were the first three of the hilarious but thought-proving Trager family series, and the deeply moving Drawing Breath. A Sudden Gust of Gravity has the author's formidable writing skill, especially in characterizations. I thought the plot of this one was a bit too predictable, but that certainly wasn't a reason to stop reading since she had masterfully hooked my interest in the plight of the characters. When an author can do that in novel after novel, you can be sure her future works will be on my TBR list.

The characters are perfect: well-rounded, fully developed good people struggling to overcome their flaws. Exactly the kind of people I want to root for. But what I loved the most about this book was the way Boris tightens the screws, increasing the tension ever so slightly, little by little, so imperceptibly that you don’t even realize it until, suddenly, you’re holding your breath and hanging onto the narrative that’s racing like a runaway train. This book grabs you and won’t let you go.

From debut author Helena Rac, a sassy, sexy comic tale of second-chance romance and the many uses of icing. Tessa loves cupcakes. They're tasty and comforting, and they've made her bakery a success. Men, on the other hand, are unreliable jerks who are bound to break her heart. Even if they're hot enough to melt her frosting. Tessa is smitten with Luke after a less than graceful encounter on the streets of Chicago, and fate keeps reuniting them. She's certain he'd be delicious in bed, but there's just one problem: Tessa's sworn off long-distance romances, and Luke lives in London. Besides, he's proven himself to be bad news. Although Tessa's sexy stranger swears to set aside his player ways after she carries out sweet revenge, she's far too smart to believe in happily-ever-afters. Luke will need to use every weapon in his arsenal - including a spatula or two - to convince Tessa they're meant to be together.

By Nikki Storebo **I received an ebook copy in exchange for an honest review**Sweet Bliss is a delicious literary treat from debut author Helena Rac.Tessa and Luke meet by chance, literally running into one another on the streets of Chicago. Four months later they cross paths again, only this time, things get a little … hot, before they part ways. Luke is exactly what Tessa’s looking for. He’s sexy, funny, smart, a world traveler … but he lives in London, which leaves Tessa wondering if love can conquer 4,000 miles.I loved this book. Helena has whipped up the perfect combination of sweetness, humor, naughtiness, and angst. This book read easy and I found myself caught up in the story almost immediately. I love Helena’s writing style. She keeps things simple, yet brings the reader right there into the story alongside the characters. And Luke + cupcakes … yum!I loved both Tessa and Luke in this book. Tessa was funny, she made me laugh and she was relatable. She’s had her heart broken before, which I think most of us ladies also have, and now she’s afraid to hand it over to someone again. She’s also incredibly independent and a strong female lead, which I love to see in a story. I loved how she carved out her own place with the bakery and paved the way to success for herself.Luke … Man, I can’t say enough good things about him. He’s sexy, sweet, funny and just an all around, genuinely good guy. He’s not perfect though, and that’s what I liked. He’s flawed, he does things he regrets, but he’s also honest and owns up to those things. His free spirit drew me in right away, as did his being up front about his feelings and wants. I love how he pursued Tessa and wasn’t willing to give up, despite the fact that there was an ocean and half a country between them. He’s earned a spot on my Top Book Boyfriends of 2016 list for sure. And the cupcakes! Ahh! I loved reading about Tessa’s baking as much as I loved reading about her and Luke. And as a self-proclaimed cupcakeaholic, this story very easily won my heart. I mean really, who can resist a tale that involves falling in love over strawberry icing?I thought that Helena did a fantastic job of taking us inside the minds of her two main leads as well, especially with Tessa. As I said before, Tessa had her heart broken, she’s dealt with abandonment, she’s gone through some difficult times with her family in the months preceding the story’s opening, and as a result, she’s got some issues she needs to get a hold on and work through. She’s very much of a control freak in some aspects, which seems to stem directly from what she endured in her last relationship. She expects answers right away, needs immediate results, and I think we all know this can be damaging to a relationship. I loved seeing her recognize this and transform as the story progressed, and watching the wall around her heart crumble, piece my piece over the course of the story, was great.Sweet Bliss is a lovely story. Helena did an excellent job with her debut, and I very much look forward to seeing what she gives us all to enjoy next. If you’re looking for a funny, romantic, and quick read then Sweet Bliss is perfect for you.Sweet Bliss gets the Got Nikki? Must Read seal of approval.Five sugary sweet stars for this wonderful novel!

Sweet Bliss is a fun, flirty, sexy, and heartfelt contemporary romance that with hit all the sweet spots! If you don’t sigh with contentment and long for cupcakes and sweet treats as you read, you are doing it wrong. This story is one of those sweet stories of fate and the strength of two characters to take up where fate left off. It has moments of hilarity but also moments of grief and strife. This is a story of what could be and the beginning of something that could turn into a forever happily ever after.Tessa and Luke. These two have what is takes to be a couple that makes it long term if they can just get past their hesitation and jump all in. Tessa has been burned before and those scars are still visible. Luke has never wanted to commit to more than a fling. When you get these two together, well it is bound to be messy. But the messy relationships are usually the ones most worthwhile. These two share a connection and it is fun to watch that connection grow from admiration to lust to something deeper. When these two decide to see where a step in the right direction would lead, there is much to anticipate. The lust is explosive. At times it was like BAM… sweet romance and then they just cannot keep their hands off each other. Normally this would annoy me a little bit but it works in this scenario. These two are connected and their lives weave in and out. They have both felt the pull towards one another and they decide not to hold back. That is terrifying to them both but it works really well. What starts as a physical connection delves into something more. They are unapologetic about their lust for one another, something that fits in this book.Sweet Talk is the beginning of a relationship that could be the catch all and end all. So often we see the beginning, middle, and end in a love story. This story focuses on the beginning. We see Tessa and Luke meet for the first time, then their brief encounter again months later. We see them meet once more with a bit of history (a messy beginning to be sure) and the story progresses. There is no insta-love. There is definitely insta-lust and a bodice ripping romance, but the emotions stay at a realistic level. There is attraction, confusion, hurt, anger, like, and the progression to something more. That is something that makes this book great. It is a natural progression of an adult type relationship. Sure it is a bit more dramatic, but not everyone falls in love in chapter 3. The relationship evolves at a steady pace and leaves you with the contentment that a happily ever after is in the stars for these two if they can just open their eyes and grasp it.Helena does a great job of bringing this story to life. The characters are well developed and intriguing. I loved watching how each person in the story interacts with one another. There is family, comradery, and friendship. Tessa and Luke are well developed main characters who have baggage that is believable and well presented in the story. Everything we learn about them is essential to what is happening and keeps the connection strong. The situations and thought processes are spot on in this story. I love that the relationship is complex in the beginning. Sure it is a physical relationship that cannot be denied and they enjoy each other’s company, but there is something more brewing and it makes things a bit more real. Helena Rac stole my heart with this story and I demand it back. Sweet Bliss is a fun and heartfelt story of love, lust, and cupcakes! Do not miss this debut novel and make sure to add Helena to your “authors to watch” list!

Cupcakes and Icing lead the way to Love By AddictedReader 3.75 Letting Go and Feeling Your Way Through Stars* * * 3/4There are two themes running through this which are really important life lessons in my book...The first is you can not live your life with just doing things from pragmatic lists...of always thinking of outcomes and results. Those traits are commendable but if you do not allow yourself to feel... be vulnerable... willing to sometimes throw caution to the wind... then you are limiting the scope your life and might miss out due to fear. The other lesson is perfectly summed up by this famous quote:“If you love somebody, let them go, for if they return, they were always yours. If they don't, they never were.” Kahlil GibranSo there are the most important take-aways from this book...We have this self assured Bakery owner, Tessa. At only 26, she has made her shop successful and loves what she does. Her cupcakes, specialty cakes and loose leaf teas are the backdrop to the feelings of welcome for her customers. There they come to enjoy the sweet icing and moist cake wrapped up in a paper cup with friends having conversations or just reading in a corner. This Lovely Cakes bakery is Tessa's domain and she should be proud. All of the thank yous, pictures of events she catered, new babies from the showers she has baked for decorate her walls. What isn't on the walls or in the persona she presents is the deep feelings of betrayal and abandonment she has experienced in her young life. Her first heartache was when she lost her father to a sudden heart attack. Her father was her hero and she had the best relationship with him. He taught her to be strong; plan things out ... be able to follow through and see the outcomes for success. His business success was the way he listed the needs of the company and it worked all his life. He was a loving father and very close to his daughters and wife. Losing him so unexpectedly was a huge impact on all in the family. It was during this emotional time, Tessa was in college and met her thought-to-be- first-love. They were very much alike... lists and thoughts for the future and all...for three years...and then they weren't... with no warning, the man she thought was her HEA called to tell her he was going to London for his next future career step... and then never came back... leaving her devastated. After finally coming around and focusing on her life, she put together the bakery and is loving where she is. Tess devised a perfect personal plan, too.Have a little fun when feeling like it, get physical if desired and then Break...Detach....Run .This way Tessa will not get hurt ever again. She also stops her feeling or being that girl she was before ....but it is a fair trade off, after all, she has her cupcakes...This is the woman we meet as she is speed walking to a new client meeting. She is inhaling one of her cupcakes for breakfast as she is texting her appointment and smacks into a hard wall of a hard body attached to a eyes that sparkle and a grin made for sin. With icing smashed all over her mouth and chin, she looks up and loses her ability to speak...for this stranger is everything a romance reader dreams of...He holds her shoulders, straightens her out and gazes at her mouth with a look telling Tessa he would like to lick off all that icing. Her mind is racing because she would nod yes, please do...They step away...looks and few comments made and then just like in a dream... he is gone. But this stranger made his impact on her... and dormant parts of Tessa's body are awakening as if from a poison apple....they tingle and will not be ignored. For Luke is with his own issues with love, caring and abandonment. His mother left his dad and he just never got over it...He saw his dad crumble inside... wanting the woman he loved to return to him...Luke's pattern has been to have flings of one or two dates tops and move on...This way he will never become his dad... pining away for a woman who is never coming back...Tessa's younger sister has found her "one". Clara is free spirited and sees life as uncomplicated. Her boyfriend Marcus is liked by Tessa and the mother, so all is perfect in Clara's world. Tessa is about to head home even after being invited out by her sister when Marcus walks in with his visiting college friend from London, Luke...Wall of Hard Man...Man who made her parts tingle and brain not work...As they look at each other, words are being said by those around them of dinner and movie and let's go etc....Clara takes Tessa to her bedroom and they change; coming out in a dress which shows Tessa off and Luke is having difficulty breathing. It is this encounter which sets so much in motion... these two have the chemistry and during the movie, things become, shall we say heated between them. There is a tad more than just lusty attraction which both feel and are reacting to in different ways...It causes confusion and hurt in Tessa...It makes Luke not understand his fascination and get what is happening emotionally...Months pass and it is wedding time for Clara and Marcus. The events and week before the I Do's is the backdrop to the majority of this engaging first novel. We are treated to a number of pluses... the back and forth verbal sparring of Luke and Tessa, their coming together with icing and oh, my experiences which will weaken the knees...and Luke's persistence in owning up to his past mistakes ... wanting to make things right. All of these parts were very solid and you fell for Luke, for real.Tessa was fun but carried some series issues which caused her to doubt herself with men. It was understandable... yet when confronted with Luke and his sincere admittance to mistakes and revealing his desire for Tessa... it was Tessa's reaction I did not relate to-It could be my personal take... as my husband proposed in 5 days of knowing each other... and we were married for quite a long time....My rating is reflective of my bit of frustration with our gal.I will say, though, this was a very pleasant surprise and Helena Rac has a way with creating need, sexual tension, use of Icing and a spatula for every readers' liking. There was sly humor, real heart and no perfect cookie cutter ending. There was a bit of freshness to the "cute meet, rom com" and I hope there are more to come.A Gifted Copy was received for an Honest review.

Excerpt from The Book of the Courtier: From the Italian of Count Baldassare CastiglioneThe Renaissance is the name of a European movement so gradual, broad, manifold, and subtle, that any attempt to reduce it to a single expression is predestined to failure. No formula less vague and magniloquent than Michelet's - 'the discovery' by man of himself and of the 'world' - can be stretched to cover the diverse aspects of that great era of change. On all sides there was a loosening of bonds, and a widening of horizons, 'deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind.' The extension of man's territorial domain, and of his imaginative prospect, by the discovery of the New World, the shattering of his most familiar conceptions by the brilliant conjectures of Copernicus, are two signal achievements which may perhaps be taken as emblematic of all the rest. By these the mediaeval scheme of the physical universe, and with it the mediaeval theory of divinity and politics, to which it was so delicately and symmetrically fitted, were to be finally overthrown. At the same time the rediscovery and reconstruction of classical antiquity by the labours of scholars gave to imagination a new focus, and to humanity a new model.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. By frumiousb The Book of the Courtier is one of those books that you hear frequently cited, but rarely actually read. It seems a shame to me if it remains unread. I expected it to take me a while to wade through it. I expected it to be dense and difficult to penetrate. Instead, it read very quickly and easy. The prose was modern, lucid, and nearly compulsively readable. The book is structured as a conversational game carried out the court of the Duke of Urbino in the rooms of his wife Elisabetta Gonzaga. In four books, different members of the court sketch out the ideal Courtier and the ideal Lady. The books treat various subjects, including the nature of grace, love, humor, gender equality, and necessary skills. The unfamiliar details of the time are mixed with the quite familiar and recognizable human foibles that are still relevant today.Castiglione is perceptive and witty and quite loving in the way he draws the people in the book. Both the "real" people having the conversation, and the imaginary ideal people being described are well developed.I enjoyed it, and I recommend it. You don't need to be a scholar to enjoy it as well.

As a testimony to fifteenth century Italian Court Life it is unparalleled. This delightful four-part book at the social nobility of the Italian Renaissance opens with an apology by Baldesar on the quality of his writing. Something that was clearly debated after Petrarch, Dante and Boccaccio as there is somewhat of a lengthier side discussion on the merits of using the vernacular in written speech partway through the first `book'.The `handbook' opens with the matriarchal Duchess ordering that a game be played and that signora Emilia decide the nature of it. It is first set to Count Lodovico to describe those qualities best attributed to a courtier with the rest of the `players' questioning or discussing his points further. The Count states that a good courtier should possess charm, be handsome, be of noble birth, modest, physically fit, be good at sports, should both observe and imitate those good qualities of other courtiers, be a good dancer, have an appreciation of music, letters and art, not be affectatious, be an above average scholar in the humanities and that his first and truest profession be that of arms. Quite a long section is taken with a development on the theory of writing and letters which has many references to the desired quality of those in the ancient world. Indeed, Castiglione holds up those practices of the ancient world in high esteem as being worthy of the perfect courtier. The second book is to be continued by Duke Federico as to how and when the courtier should put the desired courtier qualities into practice. Castiglione prefaces the second book with a justification of why old people see the future as a depraved version of their golden era - almost a youth's retort to the aged question of rebelliousness.Federico opens by stating he believes the courtier should be considered, virtuous and adhere to certain rules. Above all else he must have good judgment. The second book is frequently `territorial' in nature, particularly in the section espoused by Bernardo Bibbiena on the three types of pleasantries. Namely: long and amusing narrative ; spontaneous thrust of a cutting remark (including puns) ; practical jokes. It is in the latter, which includes tales, that the poking of fun at inhabitants of various cities (for example, Sienans, Fiorentines, Brescians) occurs. Federico earlier makes mention that no young man should attempt wisdom and that no courtier should socialize overly with those beneath his station taking care in choosing your associates. The second `book' is effectively in two parts - Duke Federico's discussion on the rules of courtiership, Bernardo's discussion of the three types of pleasantries with many anecdotes to prove his points and then finishes with a epilogue discussing those practical jokes played by women after Gaspare denounces the practice. This proves a neat lead in to the third book for the Magnifico Giuliano to discuss fashioning a Court lady. As signora Emilia puts it: "To prove it, consider that virtue is feminine whereas vice is masculine."The third book is prefaced by Castiglione with short discourse on the superiority of the Court of Urbino to all the other Courts of Italy. The Magnifico then addresses the Duchess directly stating that a woman must not "resemble a man as regards her ways, manners, words, gestures and bearing." and must be beyond reproach or suspicion. He draw many parallels with the perfect courtier, then espouses excellence in subject knowledge, discretion, prudence purity, magnanimity, and appearance. The Magnifico then gives us many stories about great women, ancient stories from Camma to Argentina, from Roma toTheodolina, Theodora and Mathilda, medieval queens such as Eleanora of Aragon, Isabella of Naples, Tomyris of Scythia and many more. He continues with examples of continence, before finally ending his discussion by stating the greatest thing a Court Lady must know, is how to conduct a discussion on love. The fourth book is prefaced with a lament for several of those parties at the discussion who are now dead. The fourth book is mainly a discussion by Ottaviano giving an end to the perfect courtier. Namely that he be able to please his Prince and how to liaise with and deal with him It ends more as discussion on the nature of Princes. What Castiglione seems to be intimating is that the perfection of a courtier is determined by his Prince rather than by a standard set of rules. The discussion sidetracks into a discourse on the nature of evil and how to recognize and act on it. It links the concepts of agism and vanity to this discussion with several interjections from the oldest member of the group, Morello. The fourth book ends with a move towards discussion of divine love and there it ends. Whether Castiglione meant to continue or not is uncertain. Two things leap out about this courtier handbook:The first is how often Castiglione chooses to address the side issue of semantics, rhetoric and grammar. It was clearly an important topic of the age and more time is spent on that single theme that any other. The second is the constant reference to the ancient world an an ideal to be lived to. Particularly classical figures such as Alexander. This is not surprising given Jacob Bruckhardt's later 1860 essay on the Civilisation of Renaissance Italy, also refers to the "Revival of Antiquity' of the time. What does comes across very clearly in this book is George Bull's refined translation keeps in mind the nature of the subject matter and in itself espouses courtiership. It is precise yet fluid in its translating and can be considered the best english rendering of this great Italian Renaissance work to date. This work is a must-read for any serious student of Renaissance Italy.

Perched on top of a couple of hills in the region Le Marche, Urbino was ruled by the Montefeltro family. From 1444 to 1482 Federigo de Montefeltro skillfully steered his tiny domain through the rough storms of Italian Renaissance realpolitik. Federigo was a successful soldier of fortune yet maintained one of the largest libraries in Italy, spoke Latin, read Aristotle, helped orphans and in general earned the love of his people. He built a beautiful fairy-tale palace and had Paolo Uccello and Piero della Francesca decorate it.His less fortunate son Guidobaldo inherited this charming and well-run dukedom. Guidobaldo married the cultivated Elisabetta of the Gonzaga family from Mantua. He was an invalid and not made of his father's stern military stuff. A victim of the brilliant military campaigns of Cesare Borgia that so enchanted Machiavelli, Guidobaldo was temporarily deposed. When the Borgias (Cesare and his father Pope Alexander VI) died, the people of Urbino rose up, drove out Borgia's soldiers and cheered Guidobaldo and Elisabetta upon their return. For the next few years the court of Elisabetta and Guidobaldo was the most beautiful, enlightened, genteel place on earth. They attracted musicians, scholars and artists. Conversation was honed into a fine art. Into this paradise strode our Lancelot, Baldassare Castiglione, a diplomat descended from minor Italian nobility. He loved Elisabetta, but as far as we know the devotion remained platonicIt is because of Castiglione that we believe we have a sense of what the court of Montefeltro was like, or at least how they would have like to have been remembered. His "The Book of the Courtier" (Il Cortigiano) painstakingly analyzes the attributes of a gentleman through conversations (probably highly idealized) of refined visitors to Urbino. It's a long, slow, but thoroughly enjoyable book. It is a window into the renaissance mind. It does not describe how the Italians of the sixteenth century were, Machiavelli and Cellini are probably more useful there. But it tells how they wanted to be. The book was read and studied by nobility all over Europe. It's also how I wanted them to be. Urbino is one of my favorite places. It's a crowded student city now. But on a quiet morning when only a few people are about and the sun has made its way over the hills from the Adriatic, I can imagine that I can see the ghosts of Elisabetta and Guidobaldo walking on the cobbled streets outside their beautiful palace. Fussy, snobbish, yet kind and gentle Castiglione and his wonderful book help make that fantasy more real.Oh, and for you bike people, Castiglione married Ippolita Torelli.- Bill McGann, author of "The Story of the Tour de France"

It's Friday, April 2. Daphne Darling knows that she should be celebrating her stepdaughter Una's 17th birthday, but it's hard, because the date also marks the one-year anniversary of her husband's death and she and Una just can't seem to connect anymore. Daphne can't turn to her own mother Isobel for advice as their relationship is distant, to say the least, and Mo, Finn's elderly mother, is still grief-stricken at the death of her only son, so she is of little help. But by the end of that day in April, marking the occasion with a slice of cake and a glass of wine will be the last thing on anyone's mind...Before that Friday, Daphne, Mo and Isobel were all stuck in the past, with their grief and their loss. And then Una takes matters into her own hands, and even though she makes a terrible mistake, she teaches Daphne, Mo and Isobel something about life: that it is to be lived and that, in spite of everything they've been through, happiness can still be a part of it.

I wish I lived next door to these characters, so likable yet realistically drawn and flawed like all of us. I liked the weaving technique with the plot. Getting a glimse of what was coming kept me wondering what was going to happen.I will preorder again. Read it, you will like it!

This book explained thoroughly all about amazon echo. It was absolutely descriptive and very uncomplicated. I find myself very engrossed with this item and what made me even more excited are the snappy features of it. It is a genuine device which serves as your personal assistant in the cloud using the power of your voice command. Now that is truly a remarkable and powerful tool in this age of technology.

21 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Hi Tech fun with the brilliant Echo By Beran Parry Voice recognition technology has come a long way since its early days only a few short years ago and the Amazon Echo is a very clear sign of the way we will be able to interact with the digital world of the future. Like all technical innovations, this latest addition to the family of voice-controlled interfaces deserves to be fully understood so that we can benefit from all of its features and advantages. This great little book steers clear of technical descriptions and delivers crisp instructions and insights to maximise daily usage of this amazing new technology. I wish that all instruction manuals were written as clearly as this book because even someone like me, who is woefully lacking in technological skills, found it incredibly easy to read and understand. That's quite an achievement and fully deserving of recognition! Well done!

17 of 17 people found the following review helpful. This book opened my mind on what Amazon Echo does. Informative! By Dave My son-in-law bought me an Amazon Echo last April and I haven’t used it that much ever since because I am limited to its function and have very little information about how to use it properly. But when I got this book as a gift I just knew this was just what I was looking for. This book served as a guide for me and gave me the information to learn using amazon echo and all its features and benefits.

Never before published, this book features George Herbert Mead's illuminating lectures on the Philosophy of Education at the University of Chicago during the early 20th century. These lectures provide unique insight into Mead's educational thought and reveal how his early psychological writings on the social character of meaning and the social origin of reflective consciousness was central in the development of what Mead referred to as his social conception of education. The introduction to the book provides an overview of Mead's educational thought and places it against the wider social, intellectual, and historical background of modern educational concepts.

By Pandora Pine I received an advanced copy of this book through the Kindle Scout program.Lucy is still reeling from her husband’s death, when she loses her beloved Nonna. A lovely story of love lost and found By Jocelyn S Ms. Hunt writes a lovely story of couples finding the courage to follow their hearts as well as finding the courage to carry on when great love is lost. The story alternates between Italy in WWII and present day New England and tells the story of Lucy and her quest to fulfill her grandmother's wish to deliver a letter and a painting to a man from her grandmother's past. In her search Lucy comes to terms with her own past and opens her heart to new possibilities and old loves. Well done Ms. Hunt, I look forward to reading more of your work. I received a copy from the Kindle Scout program.

By Rachael Ann Thomas-Jeremiah I must say receiving a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion really did allow me a rewarding and enjoyable reading experience. I can honestly say that I am thoroughly thrilled that I opted to read this book. It was so full of love, life and passion for both. Once I began reading “The Lost Art of Second Chances” I really did not want to stop. The tone was so sincere and real. Overall I enjoyed many aspects of the book: I love the storyline, I love the way the author presented the characters, the plot and the setting and the way she integrated them so well. The book is a journey of discovery from beginning to end as Lucy searches, accepts, understands, pursues and indulges. The imagery was very vivid throughout; the characters were well rounded and mirrored the personalities of many of the people we interface with on a daily basis. Also, my view is that the manner in which contrasting times of the past and present and contrasting personalities were brought together added to the appeal of the book.I could visualize the places described with all their richness and feel each of the emotions shared by the characters. It brings together varied themes: love, friendship, history, art and culture by way of varied locations, festivities, food and personalities keeps the reader engaged in a plot that builds itself and which as it unravels captures real life situations and a modern day perspective.I am really looking forward to reading more books from this author.

Excerpt from The Amenities of Book-Collecting and Kindred AffectionsA man (or a woman) is the most interesting thing in the world; and next is a book, which enables one to get at the heart of the mystery; and although not many men can say why they are or what they are, any man who publishes a book can, if he is on good terms with his publisher, secure the use of a little space to tell how the book came to be what it is.Some years ago a very learned friend of mine published a book, and in the introduction warned the "gentle reader" to skip the first chapter, and, as I have always maintained, by inference suggested that the rest was easy reading, which was not the case. In point of fact, the book was not intended for the "gentle reader" at all: it was a book written by a scholar for the scholar. Now, I have worked on a different plan. My book is written for the "tired business man" (there are a goodly number of us), who flatters himself that he is fond of reading; and as it is my first book, I may be permitted to tell how it came to be published. One day in the autumn of 1913, a friend, my partner, with whom it has been my privilege to be associated for so many years, remarked that it was time for me to take a holiday, and handed me a copy of the "Geographical Magazine."About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. If You Love Books By taking a rest ?The Amenities Of Book-Collecting And Kindred Affections?, by A. Edward Newton is a classic in its genre as well as a book that will be enjoyed by anyone who is interested in the collecting of books, and some of the most noted collectors. Some may question the wisdom of reading about this man?s experiences, as they were collected in this book in 1918. A variety of books have been published in recent years that claim to offer a guide to the collecting of books or the experiences of novice collectors. Building a library of books is not something that is easily done or learned. And a person with a fortune at their disposal acting without guidance will only amass a collection that had it been guided by a trusted advisor would be exponentially more valuable and complete. The curator of the rare book department of a noted college who also was a participant in the latest book by Nicholas Basbanes, ?Patience And Fortitude?, introduced me to this book and two others. Mr. Basbanes is the author of, ?A Gentle Madness?, and will be publishing a third volume to his work that is already considered a modern classic by collectors and book lovers. While the prices and auction results that are listed in this book are very out of date, they still make for great reading, and in some cases may bring to memory a book on a grandparents shelf that today would buy a car or home. If nothing else these old prices show just how much value continues to be placed on collectable books. Mr. Newton lived during the same time that some of those authors whose work he collected were alive and writing. He was a collector of manuscripts, which meant that the author?s original drafts of their work were often available. At one point in the book he laments the appearance of the typewriter and the effect it will have on replacing the hand written original. Had he foreseen the computer it probably would have caused him physical distress.Another area he was an avid collector of is so-called association copies. Like manuscripts these have the rarity that comes with being a one of a kind item. Throughout the book he shares many of the treasures he acquired like a book inscribed from Charles Dickens the father to his son. For people who love late 19th Century Authors, this man not only collected their work, but often knew the writers and their friends. In other instances his collection of Boswell and Johnson?s work may not have come directly from the author to him, but he still was able to collect correspondence and other written material that is now difficult to find outside of museums. This particular book is also wonderful for it has photographic illustrations as well as black and white and color plates as well. If you love books, find as old a copy of this work as you can, and you will have added a treasure to your shelves.

Wisdom from the Master By Pete Lister A delightful read from one of the pre-eminent collectors of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the "Mark Twain" of books-on-books. An entertaining book, easily the equal of any of the books on collecting that have proliferated in this century. Newton's recollections of trips abroad to collect, and his stories of acquisition in this country, make warm and comfortable reading for any collector, especially his stories of conversations and exchanges with the major collectors of his day that other such books only report about. This one heads my want list.

By Kindle Customer IF you are a book lover -- and I mean a lover of physical books and their smells and covers, etc., as well as their content -- then you will love this book. I think a non-bibliophile will find it interesting also. It is the story of a man and his journey through his love of books. It is a wonderful book. Buy it!
