Connecting on the Soul level By Denniger Bolton The author, Bryan Bruce came back time and again to a four-level connection between two people and how each person plays a role in having a healthy relationship. The four are a physical connection, a mental, an emotional and a spiritual. The author really delves into these four with hypothetical couples, with some analogies, such as seeing the relationship as a fire you’re building. The physical only type of relationship is like kindling which will burn fast and then fizzle. He continues with the analogy of building a fire as he covers the other types of connections. I liked this book because if allowed the reader to see what is really going on in a relationship from a different perspective. I like what he had to say about the five love languages and karmic relationship, soul mates and twin flames.

Something you find inappropriate, but something in this book will be very useful for your relationship. I found some useful techniques and recommendations to enable to take relations with my husband to a new level.

I especially enjoyed the sections on mindfulness and spiritual connection. Would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking at building a long lasting loving relationship. Interesting read!

The authors in this book use the metaphors of invisibility and visibility to explore the social and school lives of many children and young people in North America whose complexity, strengths, and vulnerabilities are largely unseen in the society and its schools. These “invisible children” are socially devalued in the sense that alleviating the difficult conditions of their lives is not a priority—children who are subjected to derogatory stereotypes, who are educationally neglected in schools that respond inadequately if at all to their needs, and who receive relatively little attention from scholars in the field of education or writers in the popular press.  The chapter authors, some of the most passionate and insightful scholars in the field of education today, detail oversights and assaults, visible and invisible, but also affirm the capacity of many of these young people to survive, flourish, and often educate others, despite the painful and even desperate circumstances of their lives. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. invisble children By Jeffery Mingo This anthology discusses young students that face problems that educators often do not see, thus rendering them "invisible": subjects include battered girls, Appalachians, immigrants, gay youth, among others. This book tries to juggle race, class, and gender matters, but it so heavily focuses on girls that I would almost consider it a women's studies text. I am a bit worried that the contributors are trying to say, "It's not just students of color and disabled students that face oppression at schools!" in ways that may divert much-needed attention to those two groups. Still, I am willing to give these writers the benefit of the doubt.This book does a good job of balancing theory with quotes from interviewees. It was neither too academically jargonized nor too touchy-feely. I love the art on the cover and how well it represents the problem at hand.This book effectively illustrates how children who face problems outside the school cannot be optimal learners. For example, if a child is homeless and bounced from place to place, his attendance may suffer. If a girl is beaten at home, she may spend more time hiding her bruises than focusing on studying. I love the holistic perspective here.Though this book was designed for well-meaning teachers, it also, thankfully, find fault in many teachers. This book gave numerous examples of how teachers reward the children like them and neglect the children not like them. It talks of how teacher are prejudiced against working-class students and students with AIDS patients in their family. I love that it documents how discrimination is meted out in the classroom everyday by the people one would think would be above bigotry.Published in the late 1990s, the book takes former President Clinton to task for PRWORA and "ending welfare as we know it." I think those of us who deem ourselves progressive should accept constructive critique from our allies. However, in a way, this book felt dated. I highly doubt the Republican-created No Child Left Behind Act has helped these students. I doubt voucher advocates have helped them either. If the left has failed invisible students, can anyone say the right has done a better job?This book is thoughtful, yet also a quick read. It should be useful for undergraduates and graduate students in education departments.

Noplis This book was very interesting, I was dreading it because it was assigned but was pleasantly surprised. It is not preachy or idealistic, more factual with realistic examples. Also, a good primer for the history of education laws. This book is dry, without a lot of fluff- I like that kind of thing but others do not.

About the Author Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London, England, in 1874. He went on to study art at the Slade School, and literature at University College in London. Chesterton wrote a great deal of poetry, as well as works of social and literary criticism. Among his most notable books are "The Man Who Was Thursday", a metaphysical thriller, and "The Everlasting Man", a history of humankind's spiritual progress. After Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922, he wrote mainly on religious topics such as "Orthodoxy" and "Heretics". Chesterton is most known for creating the famous priest-detective character Father Brown, who first appeared in "The Innocence of Father Brown". Chesterton died in 1936 at the age of 62.

Exceptional analysis of England's role in developing World War I By Jesse Rouse This book was written by Chesterton during World War I to show that the war was, in part, England's fault for supporting Prussia and allowing her to get away with almost anything. His purpose is summed up very well in the first chapter, which is a letter to Professor Whirlwind, a German/Prussian supporter and writer. Chesterton says:"There is a very great deal that is really wrong with England, and it ought not to be forgotten even in the full blaze of your marvellous mistakes. I cannot have my countrymen tempted to those pleasures of intellectual pride which are the result of comparing themselves with you. The deep collapse and yawning chasm of your ineptitude leaves me upon a perilous spiritual elevation."This then, is what he attempts to do: to show that England should not be smug and think themselves simply the defenders of humanity (though they may be that), but England should realize that they helped Prussia come to power, and they dealt poorly with the French Revolution and Napoleon, which let to some serious problems in Chesterton's day. Also, Chesterton blasts England for their poor treatment of the Irish, which were at the time involved in the home rule movement.Why does Chesterton do all of this? He think it is patriotic. He said in an essay entitled A Defense of Patriotism (found in his first book of essays entitled The Defendant) that "love is not blind...love is vigilant." He thought, I think correctly, that if one really loves their country one will do what is best for it, not simply say it is the best. And sometimes what is best for it is to tell it that it has made mistakes, so that it will not make them again. Chesterton says near the end of the book that "I have passed the great part of my life in criticizing and condemning the existing rulers and institutions of my country: I think it is infinitely the most partiotic thing that a man can do."This book gives an excellent glimpse into the situation in England during World War I, as well as an excellent view of what Chesterton considered patriotism to be. Of course, it is filled with witty and deep remarks, as all of Chesterton's works are.Overall grade: A

Not Chesteron's best - but still interesting By Earth that Was Chesterton's "The Crimes Of England" was written in 1916 and needs to be read , and perhaps forgiven, as a product of the Great War. The "crimes" in the title are essentially an ironic reference. Most of the "crimes" Chesterton relate to the preceding three hundred years to instances where English policy was too pro-German, or at least, too pro-Prussian by Chesterton's estimate. The list of crimes include too much support for Frederick the Great and too little support for the French Revolution. Even the crime of England's brutal response to the Irish rebellions of 1789 - something Chesterton lets loose against - was made worse by the Germanic element in the royal family and the Army's use of German mercenaries against the Irish. Chesterton is sometimes accused of "Teutonophobia", this book must be "Exhibit A" in favour of that charge.With these caveats in mind it is perhaps best to survey the book to see what usefully can be extracted. Chesterton's take on Napoleon and French Revolution, defending Charles Fox versus Edmund Burke, is interesting. In a sense this shows Chesterton as essentially a liberal at heart rather than a tory. Today intellectual conservatism is often painted as arising in reaction to the French Revolution, Chesterton in this test case is obviously in the opposite camp. No doubt Chesterton was fully aware of the excesses, including anti-Clericalism (something he called "a catholic mood"), of both the French Revolution and Napoleon, but he sees the worst of the Revolution as having been fostered by the European powers' counter-reaction. He notes that the continental absolutists were opposed to the pre-revolutionary reforms of Louis XVI as much as anything that happened later. England, a liberal aristocracy and inspiration for many French liberals, by joining the counter-revolutionary alliance may have helped propel the French revolution in a more radical path. The longer term consequences of this still shake the earth. That the American revolution (itself welcomed by England's rival powers) failed to develop Jacobin and Napoleonic excesses, and the 20th century revolutionary and counter-revolutionary experience gives at least some credibility to GKC's interpretation. Similarly Chesterton's defence of the Irish revolution of 1798 and his "no holds barred" language in this chapter (itself written just before the Easter uprising of 1916) shows some radical spirit despite his support of the Great War.Chesterton doesn't back pedal from his own radical critique - developed over the preceding decade- of British plutocracy with it's origin in (to use a "marxist" term) the "primitive accumulation" of the Tudors, the expropriation of Church property and the local commons in favour of a new "capitalist" ruling class of court favourites which he saw ruling all the way down to his own day. The Tudor revolution, in Chesterton's view biased the development of England away from agrarian smallholding and ultimately stifled local democracy and autonomy, something which always had medieval roots. This lack of local democracy and plutocratic rule came to underpin both Big Capital and the British Empire and saw English policy towards Ireland bent in a more exploitative direction than a more populist arrangement back home would have allowed.Still the failure to apply his own radical critique to the case of Britain's participation in the Great War strikes me as a blindingly obvious error. Chesterton's teutonophobia strikes me as shallow and somewhat ad hoc. It reminds me of criticisms of Russia made in the Cold War that painted communist aggression as rooted in previous centuries of Moscovy and Czarist expansionism. This is all a bit like blaming the secret bombing of Laos on Jefferson and the Louisiana Purchase, only drawing a longer historical bow. Most of his specifics, in isolation, are reasonable enough. Even the root of Chesterton's teutonophobia, implied but not made explicit, that Prussia, being outside the ancient borders of the Roman Empire was thus never truly latin and thus not truly European, making it easy prey to various heresies, including ruthless military autocracy, is not unreasonable. This shoe actually better fits the later Nazi period than the actual subject. It is however a bit much to put all of Europe's bad eggs in one Prussian basket, even if you don't particularly like Prussian baskets. Surely plutocracy, Empire, the corruption of "the Party System" (to steal a title from a book co-authored by Belloc and GKC's brother) and the mass press, the suppression of the Irish and "the Servile State" - all major Chesterbellocian themes - all came together in the war against the Hun. A critique of the British Empire's involvement here would seem to be logical next step for Chesterton's analysis. Postwar developments would only confirm the astuteness of such an analysis had it been made. In a sense there is a parallel here between Chesterton and the socialists. Just as under the pressure of war the radical socialists of the First International all, bar Lenin, ultimately rallied to their nation's colours, so too did Chesterton and Belloc, although the duo started from a quite different radical base. Perhaps his, and Belloc's, understandable love of France clouded their judgement. Perhaps Francophilia rather than Teutonophobia is the problem.Chesterton's writing style is, in my opinion, not as good as Belloc's. He can take a frustratingly long time to get to his point. Still the stoic reader is rewarded by the odd jewel. Here are a few.Describing genuine democracy. "Every Citizen is a revolution."Describing the British two party system of his day. "The wrestle of the two great parties had long slackened into an embrace.""The libel law was now used, not to crush lies about private life, but to crush truths about public life.""They meant a degree of detailed repetition and dehumanised division of labour, to which no man born would surrender his brief span in the sunshine.""The very powerful official who makes the choice of that great people for peace of war, might very well be called, not the President of the United States, but the President of the Americans."They all still seem relevant.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Not Chesterton's best -- but still worth reading. By Classics Lover This book is a political polemic against Germany in WWI. Nothing dates faster than political polemics, but, in this case, things are (somewhat) different for two reason. First, Chesterton doesn't think that the real reason for the war is, necessarily, bad 19th century politics, the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, or anything similar. He thinks it is Germany being too impressed by England. It believed England to be on its side (as is unsurprising, consider their historical dual enmity to the French, the links between the ruling families, etc.) no matter what it did, which made the Kaiser and others to act recklessly.But the German misundestanding went deeper than thinking joint political enmity towards France or (tacit) support of Prussia in the French-Prussian war in the 1870s was the same as allowing the Germans to do as they wish with France or Belgium in the 1910s. Essentially, says Chesterton, the Germans thought English culture was "really" German, that the English are, roughly speaking, under-developed Teutons, who care nothing for morals but only for realpolitiks and power. As usual, he has a fresh take on a subject of which everybody at the time said, it seems, everything that there was to say. That said, it is hardly one of Chesterton's best books. If you are new to Chesterton's non-fiction, you would do much better with collected essays such as "Orthodoxy" or "What's Wrong with the World".

Chase & Brie's love story is a story of not only love but of Brie finding a life that she never had growing up. She was on the foster care system & she didn't have the love of a family or security that she needed. To have a rich person like Chase to fall in love with her & want her to spend the rest of her life with him is all new in her life.

While it was good to finally learn about Jonah's true identity (not what I expected at all!), the book has so many time shifts and alternate time lines and potential time lines that it was almost impossible to follow.The past, present, and future keep overlapping with no sense whatsoever and time gets mysteriously fixed despite disasters that must have shaken the time infrastructure on a ten on the Richter scale.There is no real continuity in this book and events seem random. Since both Caught and Risked were brilliant, I was looking forward to some more excellent Haddix writing in Revealed, but this book fallls short of the mark.I know that everyone's going to buy this book simply to find out Jonah's true identity. You may want to ask a friend or read a review, and then wait to borrow the book from your local public library.

This book is not one of my favorites or one that I will be revisiting any time soon.Pros-Mystery surrounding main character solvedInteresting charactersFeels like the end of the seriesCons -Pacing is off... Way too much talking and not enough action/story movementIt was hard to follow all of the paradoxes as an adult... If I as an adult had problems with this book, I am sure the intend audience will tooThe dialogue didn't flowJonah's pastOverall this book is one I would not recommend. If you want to know what happens, skip to the last chapter or so and read the review summary between JB and Jonah. I wish I had.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Completed By E.J. Jones Sometimes I wonder if the seven-book series is becoming the new trilogy. J. K. Rowling and Garth Nix started the trend, and other authors have jumped on the bandwagon, including, apparently, Margaret Peterson Haddix. Unfortunately, her seventh and final “Missing” installment falls short of the quality of some of the earlier ones. However, it’s worth reading if only because we finally learn the true identity of Jonah Skidmore.Jonah is facing one of his worst dilemmas yet: Charles Lindbergh has appeared in his living room, kidnapped his sister Katherine and all of the other missing kids from history, and caused every adult in the town to revert back to Jonah’s age. It’s up to Jonah to team up with the de-aged Angela and JB in order to save the kids, bring the adults back to normal, and foil Lindbergh – who just might be Jonah’s famous father.This book went wrong in one major way: Haddix allowed herself to get too wrapped up in time travel rules and paradoxes. Her acknowledgments page shows that she may have had an inkling of this, but I’m not sure she noticed just how confusing her writing gets. “Revealed” was a good hundred pages longer than most other “Missing” novels, and I’m guessing about eighty percent of that was attempts to say, “So if this person did this before this and after this, doesn’t that mean there would be like EIGHT MORE branches of time?” I’m exaggerating, but for all the confusion I felt while reading this book, there might as well have been eighteen possible outcomes of Jonah’s actions. This made Haddix’s style suffer, too; it seemed almost like she got tired with all the paradoxes and didn’t bother to make her narrative consistent with previous books. The style that was previously casual and realistic became forced and cheesy, but maybe that’s just because I’m a little older now than I was when the series began.However, the suspense in “Revealed” was fantastic. Haddix hasn’t lost the art of creating twisting, turning plots that leave her readers on the edge of their seats. She keeps us guessing what will happen to Jonah and Katherine until the very end. That end didn’t feel much like an ending to me, though; it happened pretty quickly despite the length of the book. I would have liked a little more time to understand the conclusion and say goodbye to some of my favorite characters.Even so, I’d call “Revealed” a fairly worthwhile read. It was disappointing in some ways, but I was sorry for it to end. That’s always a sign of at least a half-decent book.*Postscript, several months after this review was written: I just found out that "Revealed" is not the last book in the "Missing" series; there's another coming out this September (maybe August). That puts a few things into perspective about this book.

A clearer version of the "Editorial Reviews - Book Description" By Lisa Shoup This isn't a review, merely an attempt to make the "Book Description" more readable. Since this was put together by two of his closest associates, John Nicolay & John Hay, in the years after his death, it seems like a valuable resource. I just want to make it a bit more desirable by trying to decipher the mess that currently appears as the "Book Description". I've taken liberties since much was indistinguishable & I don't have a copy of the book in my hands. This is what I came up with, [which is obviously a description of the work as it was when published over a century ago]:COMPLETE WORKS OF ABRAHAM LINCOLNEdited by John G. Misleading Title Obscures the Utility of a Useful BIBLIOGRAPHY, reminding the reviewer of the importance of "the right words" By Jim Vickrey However, the title is completely misleading. The book is about "the complete works" and with access to the latter is not particularly helpful, other than as a bibliography. -- Dr. Jim Vickrey, Ph.D., J.D., life-long student of our 16th and greatest President, who adds: I concluded in the first scholarly article on Lincoln's lecture on "Discoveries and Inventions that, If Lincoln had "lectured" at Cooper Union in February, 1860, as he was originally asked to do, and if he had failed as he had with his least-known speech-lecture -- the poorly received lecture(s) on "Discoveries and Inventions," given in a few places in 1859-60, it's likely he'd have been as unsuccessful and so would not have given the one speech most responsible for his getting the Republican nomination in 1860 -- the Cooper Union Address, perhaps his third or fourth greatest speech.

After each story I questioned him about his understanding of each story and believe it or not he had a rather firm grasp on understanding the stories. At the end of the book he stated that it was good. I began reading the book to him but chose mid story to allow the Kindle text to voice to read the stories to him which he inevitable always does for some reason. I too enjoyed the stories and listened every bit as intensely as he did. Good bedtime stories.

I got to purchase this a long time ago, but was not able to read it to my niece and nephew because they were not at home. Got to read this book today and niece and nephew really love the stories! So, I would recommend these for kids 4-8 years of age. They were of course all clean reads. as all of his ebooks have been. I have read quite a number of them,too. By A Customer This delightful little volume is a compilation of articles written for American troops bound for France in World War One. While their effect on the average doughboy may be questionable, they give a powerful and invaluable insight into one of the most perceptive minds of the age.Wharton, in her most engaging and always readable style, discusses First Impressions, and examines issues of Reverence, Taste, Intellectual Honesty, and Continuity, and, in her essay on the New Frenchwoman, reveals perhaps more about herself than her subjects.Highly recommended as a fine introduction to the author.(The numerical rating above is an ineradicable default setting within the format of the site. This reviewer does nor employ numerical ratings).

Good book, poor print quality By Amazon Customer It's important to know that this edition (Publisher: Kessinger Publishing, LLC (April 10, 2007)) is a bound photocopy. That is, it has an ordinary softcover binding, but most of the pages are blurry photocopies of the original edition. (All of this is explained in a note at the start of the book, but is not mentioned in the ordering information.)The background of the pages is dark, dotted gray and the print is not clear. Many of the pages also have underlining and notes (that is, the original pages that were photocopied have these marks). The dark gray background affects about three fourths of the pages; perhaps half the pages are marked with underlines or comments.Needless to say, all of this affects the book's value. Most of the book is physically hard to read because of these problems, which are not (currently) mentioned in the book's description information.My one star is for the physical problems with this particular edition, not the contents of the book itself. The book is hard to find and people who are interested in it may well be willing to put up with the ugly physical presentation in order to get an affordable copy, but you should be informed before you buy it that for reading purposes this isn't any better than a bad fax or photocopy of a real book.

13 of 17 people found the following review helpful. A good primer on French culture. By S. Gue Edith Wharton was a very observant writer and a great novelist. Her observations on the French in most cases are right on target. However, people traveling to France for work or pleasure need to understand that she is writing about a France in the early part of the 20th centur before and during World War I. When a person writes about a culture there observations only pertain to that particular time and that particular place. Another, thing to rember she is also writes about upper-class french life, which is a problem I find with almost all books on the French. Other then those two critices this is a very entertaining and insightful book on the French.On parting coment, remeber that when someone writes about a diffrent culture they are using generalizations that may be true of the culture but not everyone in it.

About the Author Alison Cook-Sather is Professor of Education and Coordinator of the Teaching and Learning Initiative at Bryn Mawr College. A necessary lens for anyone involved in education By Heather Curl Teaching is about so much more than the content students learn in class and demonstrate on a test. Any teacher can attest to that. What we receive in Cook-Sather's Learning from the Student's Perspective is clear and brilliant input from students on a variety of issues central to teaching - from classroom management to creating engaging lessons, assigning homework and grading. Grounded in the concern that "education [is] the only provider of essential social services that does not consult its user population about their needs" (p. 4) this Sourcebook offers compelling student opinion based on their experience alongside strategies for how to elicit and use this input.This, for me as a teacher and teacher educator, represents a central lens through which to view the difficult and rich work of teaching young people content and skills they need to know in order to be successful, while also supporting their growth and development. Using this book in a teacher education program has enabled me to support student teachers as they learn how to teach with the perspectives of students as a central component of their learning. Grounded in theory and filled with rich examples, practical applications and important content regarding how to teach, Cook-Sather's Learning from the Student Perspective is a powerful book and a necessary read for anyone working with and supporting students.

Outstanding Text from Multiple Perspectives By RBL In the last decade of data-driven, standardized education, classroom affect has gone largely to the attentive back burner, at least in the popular media. For various reasons - and thank goodness! - social and emotional issues, including affective climate and the "whole child" focus, seem to be returning to the forefront of scholastic consciousness. The most effective teachers, of course, never forgot about them and their importance in the first place.Dr. Alison Cook-Sather is just such a teacher, and this text demonstrates the importance that she has always placed on student-centered, affective classroom practice, highlighting the importance of open, sensitively symbiotic relationships between teachers and students.This book offers many unique benefits, chief among which in my opinion is its inclusive consideration of various perspectives and narrative voices. Classroom practitioners often respond well to qualitative, anecdotal data, and this text's inclusion of students' insights, in addition to its rich grounding in both theory and published research, serves to offer readers a quite-clear picture of effective, just, and considerate education in our early twenty-first century.In contrast to so many of the books currently situated on educational syllabi, this one is not a text from the proverbially out-of-touch ivory tower in any sense. In fact, this book is quite the opposite: a view, an explanation, and a directive from the grass roots. Highly recommended... I hope that this text (and more like it) soon appears on many Ed. departments' reading lists, which it deservedly should.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Crucial text for new teachers By jules burnstein Cook-Sather's book is a must-read for any new teacher entering the classroom. Student voice is the new frontier in educating for social justice, and this book does justice to both the movement (of which Cook-Sather is a pioneer) and the students themselves. Every section taught me something new about student experience, and broadened my horizons for how to teach well. It's so easy to forget as an adult (even a 24-year old first time teacher!) what it's like to be a high school student, and to silence our students in the same way that we were silenced. Cook-Sather reminds us that the classes we teach, are, themselves, a text to be studied. This book is a refreshing wake-up call to EMPOWER our students and with them look critically at curriculum and pedagogy.
