By fredamans First I have to say I enjoyed both The War of the Roses and The Tie That Binds, but the dark nature of the latter attracted me more. This book is dark and twisted like it, but in a different way.I loved 99% of it.It was the very last page I hated. Yup. Total WTF!!So I will keep in my memory the 99% and make my own last page....Suspense seekers that like little sick and demented twists, this is for you....4.5/5

By K Cowdall This is a tense, atmospheric thriller which uncoils chapter by chapter and leaves us with a literal cliff-hanger at journey's end. As with the best of the author's work, The Serpent's Bite is at times intentionally uncomfortable reading, with acutely drawn characters it is difficult to sympathise with, so that we turn the pages awaiting an anticipated comeuppance. By MadameRue Having been written by the author of "The War of the Roses" I was expecting a blockbuster, can't put it down, can't wait to see what happens next kind of book. This was none of those things.The book started off very slow and didn't get much better.Not one of the characters in this book was likable in any way (well, maybe the aging father's new girlfriend that you get small glimpses of). You just couldn't connect with any of them. They also weren't so detestable as to make the book interesting. The back of the book describes the lead female character as "one of the most evil women of contemporary fiction". She didn't even come close.I understand that dysfunctional people is the author's schtick. However, the whiny, spoiled, narcissistic, incestuous adult children in this book were a disappointment. More time was spent delving into and describing their sexual exploits, both past and present, than on character development.The blackmailing illegal alien's character was so sporadically developed that he was pretty much an also ran character even though the plot depended on this character toward the end.The drunk outfitter was so predictable it was like his character didn't even count.The aging father was just pathetic.The culmination of the story was one page that was anti-climactic and seemed to be thrown in as an afterthought.

Here's the deal, I think there's a lot of information (and misinformation for that matter) surrounding credit and collections and creditors. Where the author differentiates himself as an expert is in the details. I especially appreciated the script in the second tip. I wrote it down and stuck it in my wallet and read it word for word when a medical collector called. I haven't heard from the collector since (and trust me they were relentless). This book is incredibly concise, easy to follow, and most importantly easy to implement. A+ and thank you for helping me not have a panic attack everytime my phone rings.

As I was reading through this story, I hoped for a major twist in the plot, because as it was, it was desperate and heading for a major failure.Here's the situation - Oakes is the older half brother of Zach, Daphne's older half brother. Daphne and Zach's mother was a nanny for Oakes, when she had an affair with Oakes' dad, and became pregnant with Zach. Right, not the most traditional family ever. When you add to it that Daphne's dad was an alcoholic, who had abused the family, and tried to coerce Daphne to give him money at her high school graduation... Just as dysfunctional as it can be.So, when a psychology student, Daphne, goes after her long time crush, the lawyer Oakes, acting desperate, silly, making schemes to get them together, and outright begging him to pay attention to her, kiss her, sleep with her, whatever it was that she wanted at the time, it was embarrassing. Because even though Oakes didn't deny, that he was physically attracted to Daphne, and liked to be her friend, he was also very clear he didn't want to, or like to be attracted to her, didn't want to have a relationship with her, and only slept with her to get her out of his system. But even that doesn't stop her, she really still, goes after him, showing up at a party where he is with the woman he choose to be, wants to be with, who, according to him, fits into his life and is attractive, interesting, and all around lovely to be with...So, I admit, I had really hard time believing he actually would change his mind, or convince me that it was true love, after all that happen before. I'm sorry, but this couple didn't convince me of anything else, except that she was desperate, not very mature, and stubborn to the fault.There was also another couple in the story, the teenagers from the previous book of the series, Luke and Gracie. The teenage love drama that they lived through seemed more mature at the times, as the grownups, and was a cute addition to the book, even though in no way attached to the main plot.Yes, this story frustrated and embarrassed me more than anything else, but thankfully the teenagers saved part of the story.. Sorry, I really wish I could have understood and liked the story more than I did~ Two Spoons with a teaspoon on the side

He shouldn't. Although unrelated, she IS related to his half-brother, Zach. Zach hates all the Bartasavich's or at least likes to think so, but he is protective of Daphne and warns her against getting close to Oakes. Oakes, too, is hesitant to act on his attraction. When nature throws him a curve ball in the form of Daphne Lynch and an unexpected storm he is forced to reexamine what is more important. Winter's Kiss was a sweet story about making time to explore and enjoy all the blessings that are placed in your pathway. I received an ARC of this story in exchange for an honest review.

Nancy Shulins is an amazing writer, and is able to capture for her readers the pathos and the humor as she moves from the devastating realitythat she will never have children to the joy of owning and caring for Eli, a "singular" character indeed. One doesn't need to know horses or experience infertility to identify withMs Shulin's journey from sorrow to hopefulness and love.

Recuperating with Eli By California Cowgirl Conversation to the ER staff as I hobbled my way to registration mumbling something about my gentle quarter horse who has never ever bucked...well must have been spring fever - I should have seen the spark in his eyes, his ears snap to attention, when I made my way out to get him. Brushed, saddled and rider up - not for long - it was a long 8 week recovery for me - emotionally and physically. We have been a team for years, I thought to myself as I relived every moment of that ride - a few bedridden days later, scrolling through myriad on line books, I saw it - the face called out to me, and then the title - hmmm, I was looking for anything but a book on the love of a horse - in my mind I was done with horses, period. Eli came along. Nancy's personal journey, her honesty, her ability to articulate how Eli made her feel powerful and loved, how her life was more complete, the stories of learning to ride, made me cry, laugh, and got me through weeks of physical therapy and gave me the emotional support to get back in the saddle - women and horses - there is no stronger bond and no stronger love - thank you to Nancy and Eli - for giving me the courage to saddle up, again -

Although I am not a rider (or a woman - it seems there aren't a lot of males in the world of horse riding) I really loved it. The writing is colorful, the characters are engaging, and I went from page to page following Nancy as she discovered herself and the joys and challenges of riding and ownership through her relationship with Eli. Along the way I learned a lot about the care and feeding of horses and the depth of feeling they share and can evoke. I think it a great read for any age!

I sat down with the book and read friends, colleagues and strangers moving and supportive words to Peter until the early hours of the morning. I was telling myself: I’ll read just one more letter….then suddenly I reached the last! The chatty and serious letters skilfully shadow the events Peter experienced. Beautiful and caring voices adding to the support of an extraordinary journalist and his two colleagues. I highly recommend this well-crafted anthology.

Learn more about Jared Covili's PD offerings

Jared Covili is a professional development trainer at the Utah Education Network (UEN) in Salt Lake City. Jared specializes in teaching strategies for classroom integration of technology such as social media tools, geospatial learning, and digital devices. Jared received his bachelor’s degree in English and his master’s degree in Instructional Design and Educational Technology from the University of Utah. His background includes four years as a secondary Language Arts teacher. Besides his work at UEN, Jared is involved with the Utah Coalition for Educational Technology (UCET) and served as president of the organization for 2011–2012. I enjoyed the women’s friendships, witty banter, and teasing. But Ms. Heron’s warped humor had me frequently smirking and smiling as I read, until I got to her heinous cliffhanger – arg! I hope she is currently chained to her laptop and near completion on the next volume – or she may have a crazy stalker of her own to contend with. More please!

From the jaw aching grinning and laughter to the tear inducing lows in this story there truly is never a dull moment.The group of girls - four to be precise the (Quad get it?! I just know poor Davina would struggle with it!) consist of Brenda, Carla, Davina and Clarrisa. What a bunch this lot are!!But honestly - I can only describe it as a truly brilliant mix of sex and the city and Friends. The witty banter, sex chatter, hilarity and sometimes ditzy comments from poor Davina, I promise will entertain you. But truthfully, it's all about friendship. In fact, deeper than that...sisterhood!Each of the girls has their side of the story to tell, but wow, what an incredible start to this series. Love the GirlsQuad By Stacey G This is the first book I have read from J A Heron so I didn't know what to expect, though I do know she also writes gritty novels but this is completely different!It is centred around the friendship of Clarissa (salon owner), Brenda, Carla, and Davina - best friends and also colleagues. They are all totally different characters but that's what makes them gel and get along wonderfully. I loved the banter between them and J A had me in stitches more than once, especially with Davina who is just a little bit ditzy!There are also some serious elements to the story though such as stalking and terminal illness, but although most of the writing is light-hearted, these issues fit within the story well. Coming to that, J A also had me in tears towards the end of the book as the characters are totally relatable to real life and you can gather some understanding from the writing.I liked the dual POV throughout the story though it was a bit confusing at a couple of points when it went back to things that had already happened, though it was relaying events from another character POV.All in all, a really enjoyable first read from J A Heron but I will warn it does end on a cliffhanger and I'm dying to read part 2! 4.5 stars from me.

Farewell to the East End By Afternoon Attic Reader This memoir, much like the first in this trilogy, includes midwife and nurse's stories from London's East End. Many of the stories in this volume are arranged to highlight certain health issues of the day (twins/triplets, infanticide, tuberculosis, abortion), and include accompanying statistics and historical information. It is also worth noting that some of the stories included are of a bit more seedy nature than those included in the first two volumes, but I felt they were tastefully presented and the people therein were depicted with dignity. Happily, the last few chapters let you know what happened to all the nurses and nuns that you have come to know throughout the three volumes in this series. Wonderful series!

Another great Jennifer Worth story By Carolyn Rollings This book follows on from the first one 'Call the Midwife' and is just as fascinating to read. I was sorry to come to the end of the book and wished that it had been longer. As I was born in 1940, the 1950's time frame of these books was relevant to me although I grew up in Australia, not London. We did have our fair share of midwifery problems I suppose, but few would have compared with the wives and mothers of the East End just after the war. Living sometimes in the most abject poverty in unhealthy and unsanitary conditions these women excelled. Being in the time when the man of the family never got involved with 'women's issues' these women, sometimes with ten or more children living in just two or three rooms with no inside plumbing or cooking facilities would help each other. In time of crisis neighbour would help neighbour, mother would help daughter. I recommend this book, especially if you can relate to the era, as it brings home just how folk lived in the East End of London. The close-knit community spirit was destroyed once the area was demolished and the inhabitants re-housed in other areas further away.

The character development is a work of genius and I loved each one of them I was reduced to tears and uplifted and inspired at other times. Loved these books.Not only was I enthralled by Jenny's stpory but she taught me much historical background and laws that I was unaware of. Inspirational work.

But the social life of the two centuries in which women played so important a role in France is always full of human interest, from whatever point of view one may regard it. It was recommended to me by a friend and I feel like I am immersed within the elegance of the French court everytime I open it on Kindle. I have recommended this to many of my friends who are history buffs. It would make a wonderful summer read, too, if you are looking for something to while away the hours on the beach. A definite keeper.

Although I have only read a few chapters of this book, it is somewhat difficult to read through as the author that wrote this book is long dead and wrote in a different style.I like to read as my Amazon name states, but I am no expert and only read what I choose. I will see if I choose to finish this book ... I have so many others to read.
