In her first novel since The One and Only Ivan, winner of the Newbery Medal, Katherine Applegate delivers an unforgettable and magical story about family, friendship, and resilience.

Jackson and his family have fallen on hard times. There's no more money for rent. And not much for food, either. His parents, his little sister, and their dog may have to live in their minivan. Again.

Crenshaw is a cat. He's large, he's outspoken, and he's imaginary. He has come back into Jackson's life to help him. But is an imaginary friend enough to save this family from losing everything?

Beloved author Katherine Applegate proves in unexpected ways that friends matter, whether real or imaginary.

Crenshaw, by Katherine Applegate

From School Library Journal Gr 4–6—In her first novel since the Newbery-winning The One and Only Ivan (HarperCollins, 2012), Applegate tells the story of a 10-year-old boy whose imaginary friend helps him cope with a family crisis. Jackson, his parents, and his five-year-old sister once again are staring down the barrel of an impending eviction notice. What frustrates Jackson isn't just the lack of money: it's his artistically minded parents' tendency to gloss over their woes with humor and cheer rather than acknowledging the reality of their situation. It's understandably a shock to Jackson when an old friend reappears: Crenshaw, a seven-foot-tall talking cat, who first came into his life several years ago when the boy and his family were living out of their car shortly after his father was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Skeptical Jackson tries to dismiss Crenshaw as a figment of his imagination, but the cat's words of wisdom start to resonate with him. Employing sparse but elegant prose, Applegate has crafted an authentic protagonist whose self-possession and maturity conceal relatable vulnerability and fears. While sardonic Crenshaw may not be the warm and cuddly imaginary friend readers are expecting, he's the companion that Jackson truly needs as he begins to realize that he doesn't need to carry the weight of the world upon his shoulders. Though the ending wraps up a shade too neatly, overall, children will appreciate this heartbreaking novel. VERDICT A compelling and unflinchingly honest treatment of a difficult topic.—Mahnaz Dar, School Library Journal

Review

“This accessible and moving novel demonstrates how the creative resilience of a child's mind can soften difficult situations, while exploring the intersection of imagination and truth.” ―Publishers Weekly, starred review

“The tone is warm and, occasionally, quirkily funny, but it doesn't sugarcoat the effects of hunger and vulnerability. This novel adds a middle-grade perspective to the literature of imaginary friends and paints a convincing and compassionate portrait of a social class―the working poor―underrepresented in children's books.” ―The Horn Book, starred review

About the Author Katherine Applegate is the author of the bestselling Animorphs series, and the novels Home of the Brave and The One and Only Ivan, winner of the 2013 Newbery Medal. She lives with her husband, author Michael Grant, and their two children in Northern California.

88 of 91 people found the following review helpful. an enjoyable read, despite a dark topic (and not too scary) By Amazon Customer This book does a phenomenal job of being engaging and fun despite material that could so-easily delve into dark and disturbing. The author walks that precise line of creating empathy without creating too much distress for young readers. I have no qualms letting my 10-year-old or even 8-year-old read this one. It *does* talk about homelessness and its side effects for a young child, but somehow the imaginary friend (who's introduced in the first line as a surfboarding cat who's holding an umbrella) makes things lighthearted and safe, even while you recognize that he's a sign of emotional distress.FOR PARENTS - CONTAINS SPOILERSIf your child is sensitive (like mine are), it may help to know that the imaginary friend is silly enough to break up the tension on a regular basis. Many of the most-difficult moments of the book happen in the past (from the previous time this boy had to live in the van with his family and their puppy for 14 weeks), so you know they eventually made it out. And although he mentions having seen his dad cry (the only time he had seen such a thing), most of the darker moments focus on things like the van being smelly, or how he didn't like his younger sister kicking him in her sleep (so he decorated a cardboard panel to put in between them). There's a lot of generosity/kindness from strangers, which helps a lot even though they *were* still living in a van, which keeps you empathizing with them but not spiraling into despair. There are also a couple of places where he says "I know other people have it much, much worse, but I still hate this," which again triggers empathy and understanding, without minimizing what anyone has to go through... making you aware of those darker stories, but not taking you into them. Finally, fortunately, at the end of this novel, the family finds a temporary place to stay (an old, run-down, one-room apartment) so again it's clearly not sunshine and roses, but hopeful. The author truly does a masterful job of introducing this difficult topic in a way that creates empathy while being enjoyable and (for most kids) non-traumatizing.

Crenshaw isn't real 9 year old Jackson realizes this. Crenshaw himself realizes this. Crenshaw was Jackson's imaginary playmate when he was five, and four years later he's back. This is disturbing because Jackson is now too old to have an imaginary playmate. However, as it turns out, he does need one. This is a surprisingly serious juvenile novel. It deals with the quite serious theme of homeless living. You can't get much more serious than that. However, this is hardly a depressing book. There's lots of humor in it. However, it's not a light read. The author makes Jackson's life seem quite real. He, his sister, and his parents are all very real characters. Oddly, so is Crenshaw. The writer's crowning achievement is making Crenshaw real, but not real.On one hand, this is pretty heavy stuff for the young reader to handle. On the other hand, it has a lot of entertainment value. I recommend it strongly for kids and even for parents.

He prides himself on his scientist-like thinking, and that's what he wants to be when he grows up--a scientist. But, like most kids in a family with some serious problems, he has limited time to think about his future. His dad was once a successful construction worker who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and could only take part-time jobs after that time. His mother was once a middle-school music teacher, until her job was eliminated, and she then started working up to three part-time jobs at a time. Unfortunately, all that part-time work never seemed to add up to full-time wages, and, once again, Jackson's family was looking at the possibility of having to live in their van.Living in the van didn't seem that bad to Jackson the summer before he entered second grade, but he could not fathom doing so again the summer before he was starting fifth grade. That's when Crenshaw returned. Crenshaw was there the first time the family became homeless, and he was back the second time it looked like homelessness was approaching. Crenshaw was Jackson's imaginary friend, and he was one big cat. Like Jackson, he also wasn't particularly sentimental and liked to stick to facts. Unlike Jackson, who feared he was beginning to lose it, Crenshaw had no problem with the existence of an imaginary friend, even for a boy going into fifth grade. So this story goes . . . and it is an excellent example of a writer dealing with a major social issue without being too heavy-handed. For some, the story will seem magical. For others, it won't seem magical enough. For example, at times, Crenshaw seems more like a therapist explaining why imaginary friends exist, instead of seeming like an imaginary friend created by a young boy. Yet, maybe that's the type of imaginary friend a budding scientist would create in his mind. Jackson also has a friend named Marisol who wants to be a scientist when she grows up. The author is nicely demonstrating with her character the fact that having just one real friend can make all the difference in the world, to a child heading towards an uncertain time in his or her life. (Obviously, having an unreal friend can help, too. )Uncertainty. Legions of homeless children or those being threatened by homelessness are dealing with uncertainties every minute of their lives. Crenshaw may be a book that helps those children. It also may be a book that will help children who never have to face the possibility of homelessness understand better those who do. Crenshaw is a cat. A big cat. There is no animal that has better survival skills or instincts. This is not a particularly sentimental story. It's also not a story that will scare children . . . at least not too much. The ending is one of hope, but not hope of an unrealistic type. Yet, the story shows magic can exist . . . even in the mind of a young scientist . . . and can help make a difficult time less difficult. So can love.

My name is Sophie and I’m a journalist. I chase down a story and nail it to the floor regardless of the collateral damage. That’s what a typical reporter does anyway. I’ve never had that killer instinct. I want to report the truth. Right now that means figuring out if Julian Montclaire Robespierre is a dirty, lying scumbag. Of course, that would make him the most attractive scumbag on the planet. "My source is good, Ray! Those assholes are lying about their line of gluten free products!” “Soph, believe me, I’m sure Montclaire is lying about something. They’re a multi-billion dollar corporation.” Ray rubbed his hands down his face. His raggedy gray hair was sticking up at all angles. “We aren’t equipped to deal with this kind of fallout, Soph. The Interpreter is one lawsuit away from bankruptcy. You know that." “Ray, please.” “No!” He waved a hand to cut her off. Sophie shot out of her chair and stalked out of the office. “Soph?” Charlie asked hesitantly. “Are you all right?” “I know I’m right, Charlie,” Sophie said confidently. Charlie spooned some yogurt into her mouth. “Is this about that Montclaire thing?” “Yes.” Sophie picked up the folder on her desk and flipped it open. Julian Montclaire Robespierre looked back at her from the glossy 8x10 publicity photo. He wasn’t smiling. In fact she had her doubts that the guy ever smiled. Not that he needed to. He was hot regardless of his expression. There was absolutely no question about that. “Are you staring at his picture again?” There was a note of warning in Charlie’s tone. “That is so creepy. Seriously.” “It’s not creepy. I’m just sizing up the enemy.” Or am I? NOTE: Part 1 of 3. Cliffhanger ending.

Exposing the Billionaire {Part 1} By Jgtimm This book captured me before I even finished this first episode - and that's why I bought the next two and lined them up on my carousel before I even began this review. Sophie is an investigative reporter, determined to out the scumbags who sell dangerous products to the public. Julian is a multi-billionaire who owns one such corporation. Maybe he knows about the possible danger, maybe he doesn't. Either way he and Sophie meet and the die is cast. They belong together - or do they? Not if he's a liar. Serious stuff, I know, but it's also a romantic comedy as well. Warning: each episode ends in a cliffhanger. My suggestion: get the first one and see if it charms you as it did me. It's a winner.Jgtimm

It’s the first day of school at Stanton Central High. The teacher stands by the door as ready as she’s going to be. The 6B Improvement of Language Skills class bursts in: Neal, with a shaved head; Joe, wearing three earrings; Vance, in dark glasses and a heavy navy jacket, the same one he wore the few days he attended last year… plus the other fourteen. “I’m hungry”… “I hate English” … “I’m sick of this already.” And so the new year begins. We will be with them for two semesters and we will get to know them all. We’ll read their poems and journals. Be in on their muttered remarks and jokes. We’ll see what they put in their Time Capsules and hear what they have to say in their interviews. We’ll listen to their discussions as they watch Great Expectations. Many of us will come to care about all of them and be sad when some of them run away or get arrested or become pregnant. We’ll understand why this teacher is relieved when Stan and Mike are both absent on a subzero Monday in the middle of February. Lots of days, we’ll give her a gold star for her efforts.

I'm Sick of This Already: At-Risk Learning in a High School Class, by Ginnah Howard

Review “Wow. This is a terrific book by a woman who really knows at-risk high school students who are living "on the edge". And she knows how to write. The style is fresh, without jargon; you can't help turning pages. I found the book engrossing, with sharply drawn portraits of students who stayed on my mind. She does a marvelous job of creating the world of school, the rhythms of the classroom, the body language of students. …Howard knows her kids. She looks at them with deep, thoughtful, loving eyes. Readers will sense this from the first page.” -Ralph Fletcher, author of Walking Trees: Portraits of Teachers and Children in the Cultures of Schools “I LOVE THIS BOOK. I am attached to the characters—Howard makes them so real & accessible even in their inaccessibility. I root for them & I am reminded of all the inequities that life brings.” -Kim Ilowit, worked with remedial students in the Writing Center at the State University at Oneonta.

About the Author Ginnah Howard's stories have appeared in Water~Stone Review, Permafrost, Portland Review, Descant 145, Eleven Eleven Journal, Stone Canoe, and elsewhere. Several have been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Her trilogy about two troubled Upstate New York families, which spans the years from 1946 to 2003, is now complete. In Book 1, Rope & Bone: A Novel in Stories (Illume Publications, July 2014) all the Merricks and Morlettis have a chance to give their "take" on their formative years. Book 2, Night Navigation (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt 2009) focuses on the Merrick familiy. This novel was a New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice. Book 3, Doing Time Outside (Standing Stone Books 2013), gives the Morlettis' side of the story. All of the novels stand alone. The National Alliance on Mental Illness of New York State gave Howard their Media Award for work on behalf of those with mental illness and their families. Sandage I’m Sick of This Already has a place in training new teachers and reviving veteran teachers. The story is direct and true… This book gives us the stuff of schooling that cannot be noted in the data or hung in the trophy case by the gym.... We need to use this narrative as a point of departure for recognizing this population of school failures in our own communities, commiserating with a teacher who lived our lives, and finding our way to candid conversations about what life in public schools is like for everyone.Rabia Anne Sandage, M.S.Ed.a literacy specialistVirginia

By Marci "I'm Sick of This Already" gives the reader an excellent glimpse of how tough it is for both underprivileged students and their teachers in areas where there is poverty is present. This teacher narrative would be an excellent source to use in college classrooms, not only in presenting "real" students, but also in opening up discussions on ways to reach these struggling students.effectively. Too often teachers are thrown into the situations so well described in this book with no ideas on where to even start helping students who have learned to put up barriers to hide their lack of abilities. One great line in the book says "Performing in an unruly bar might be an invaluable part of student teaching. And being a bouncer." A book such as this could help ready teachers in confronting the struggle to help these students open up and show them that they can succeed. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning about the struggles involved in teaching disadvantaged youth.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Must Read for Those Who Care About Education By William May Wonderful book! Rather than just a dry account of how a class of at-risk students operates, she incorporates subtlety and striking differences between children. She demonstrates the extreme difficulty of uncovering, and then catering to, the different learning styles of individual students. The book is a wonderful demonstration of why teachers burn out - that level of frustration and rarely rewarded effort would make most critics of our teachers quit before the school year is out. I doubt they could handle the stress pains Ms. Howard developed.I have submitted an order for a copy to be a Christmas present for my son and daughter-in-law who deal with these problems in schools every day. Most teachers should read this book to know that they are not alone in their daily struggles.

More Than Neighbors By ahsihs I don't usually get books with no or little reviews but I decided to give this book a chance and I am happy that I did. This is the first time I have read anything by this author and I enjoyed the book.Leopold Sinclair is a very proper, old-fashioned (in my opinion) Englishman who is very much a workaholic. He sometimes comes off as offstandish and stiff. Catalina Stapleton, aka, Cat is a vivacious young woman who is passionate about life. She sometimes comes off as scatterbrained. Cat thinks that Leopold (or Leo as she so dubbed him) is too uptight and works too much and has therefore decided that she is going to try to loosen him up. They both think that the other is not their type. Through their numerous interactions, they slowly begin to fall for each other, even though they both deny it.I rather enjoyed the characters. Leopold at first seems like this uptight, two dimensional character but as we begin to get to know him, we see more facets of his character that make him likeable. I liked Cat from the get go. She was caring, passionate and sometimes crass - she has the ability to speak whatever comes to mind. The book held my attention until the end and the writing was very good (a lot of these ebooks nowadays have questionable grammar). The plot and characters were engaging enough that I read the book in one sitting (I think it took me an hour and a half). My only qualm, as another reviewer pointed out, was that the conversation bits were a bit stilted because of the way it was written. However, it did not stop me from finishing the book.Overall I would recommend this book.(On a totally unrelated note, I'm kind of bummed that the other books available from this author aren't in English.)

By Elizabeth Edwards Boy am I glad I didn't take the reviews that were up when I 1st thought about buying this book to heart... I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I figured or had a thought of where the story was going but it was fun to see the conclusion. You sometimes have to just take a leap of faith & buy a book, if you have that gut feeling it will be a real keeper... & I am so happy I did. This book deserves 5 stars. It is a story that makes you smile, it is a fast read, so not serious & makes you realize that you shouldn't take life so seriously, enjoy it, find the love you are meant to find, even if it might be right next door. I think a lot in our world is sad at times & to have a book that is fun, silly, makes you laugh & think is ok, is cool!!! ... if you think that sounds like your kind of book then go for it. I paid $1.99 ... I loved it! ( :

Do you feel tired… or more accurately, exhausted as a new mum? Are you worried that you don’t have enough time for yourself? Do you feel isolated? Self Care for New Mums is written to help first-time mothers to regain their energy, personal time and meaningful relationships. Kirstie Stockx realised, first hand just how hard being a new mum really is, she was tired, isolated and felt guilty about spending time by herself for herself. Kirstie realised that this was negatively influencing her personal wellbeing and she started making positive changes. She combined her existing knowledge around personal development and tailored it to perfectly suit her new circumstances – a new mum. Kirstie noticed that she was more alert; felt connected with herself, her friends and family. She also started enjoying some much needed personal time (guilt free). After noticing that other mothers were also struggling, Kirstie began reaching out and connecting with new and experienced mums, this gave her valuable insights from over five hundred mothers. From this experience, she noticed that mums that were confident, calm and happy had established strong skills in four key areas; Mind, Body, Organisation and Connections. In ‘SELF CARE FOR NEW MUMS: A Practical Four Step Guide for First Time Mothers’ Kirstie’s passion for helping mums feel calm, confident and happy shines through. “New Mum is a great read for women who have recently had a baby or about to. Filled to the brim with information, stories and practical examples, Kirstie’s passion for self-empowerment shone through each page. She is a shining exampleof how motherhood can be a transformational experience and has generously shared her method with new mums.” – Cherie Pasion, founder of Connected Mama and author of It’s Your Birth…Right?

A nourishing book By Cherie Pasion When I became a mother I felt all of the things that Kirstie describes in the book: tired, lonely and isolated, and didn't have enough time. Only, I didn't realise that it was common for women to feel this, and felt even more lonely in my journey. So, it's very comforting to have Kirstie's book - and be guided with nourishing information and given practical exercises in how to make my life and my family's easier. This book is a great book to take with me for the first several years of motherhood.

The writing team of JH Meyer sees a need for books that appeal to adults who are working on becoming better readers. A NEW DIRECTION was written especially for those readers but can be enjoyed by anyone. Who says there is no heart in business? Aunt Lou’s pawnshop had once been a place for the family to gather. After Lou’s brother and sister-in-law died, she made a point to try and raise her niece and nephew as her own. However, her best intentions weren’t good enough. Her nephew ended up a drug addict. Her niece married young and left their hometown of Ringo, Wyoming behind. After Weston served time in prison and Pam was widowed, the siblings are summoned to return to the pawnshop. It came as a complete surprise when Aunt Lou invited Weston, Pamela, and Weston’s adult daughter Angel Patterson for a family reunion. In addition, the reunion included an offer to share ownership of the business. Problems arise when the siblings meet again and confront one another after years of drifting apart. Forgiveness comes hard for past offenses and wrongdoings. Can Aunt Lou bring the family together as she offers hope for a new beginning for each of them? Meet the Patterson family and the people who come into the pawnshop to sell, buy, and generally make life more interesting.

Aunt Lou keeps her hopes up to reunite her family again in hard times. Twists and turns in modern day life challenge this! Captivating writing about real honest issues we face in life. Couldn't stop reading it once I started. A very good read about real life!

Readers will immediately cheer for Weston as he works to earn back the trust and love of his family. True to Wyomingite's spirit of freedom, every dispute can be solved by a strait shooting woman or four. This is a great read for anyone from Wyoming and anyone working to become a better reader.

For some kids, it takes a little digging to find the school that is going to help them thrive. Over the winter break everyone in my family was poring of this book and calling out fun details, like "Hey, did you know such-and-such school has a polo team?!" I think it's good inspiration for high schoolers. It certainly had a LOT of colleges I had never heard of, especially small ones.

Children are born to us as a precious gift; Innocent and New. As Auntie Rhonda, I consider my role to love, nurture, educate and open their eyes to all the possibilities that are before them. To encourage and support their ability to follow their dreams because anything is possible. This story of William and friends and the series to follow empowers Children in believing that no matter what the situation they face in life, that within each child there is a Special Power that would help them. Whether it be: • WILL POWER like William to follow their dreams. • BELIEF like Faith that they can achieve it. • STRENGTH like Michael to make it happen. • LOVE like Ruby to enjoy it. They only need to look for that Special Power within themselves. When William had to face his biggest fear; bullied by his classmates because of his 3rd eye. He never thought that this is a gift; a gift to see the world in a different way with the help of Grammy. Let us witness how William and his Friends unleashed their Special Powers. Read this book and tell me….. What’s your Special Power?

Children's Book: "Powers of William and Friends" (Bedtime story)values(beginner early readers)Funny,Preschool-Rhymes(Early learning)picture book-kids series, by Rhonda Maroun

About the Author As a Family member, I can attest to the unique idiosyncrasy's that make up Rhonda Maroun, from firsthand experience. Rhonda was born in Sydney Australia into a loving family, the eldest of six children. From a very early age, her parents instilled in her a strong sense of love for her family, an unquestionable faith in God, the importance of treating others as you wished to be treated, respect for yourself & elders, but mostly, to always believe that you could achieve anything you put your mind to. Rhonda has a great desire for knowledge and believes that KNOWLEDGE = POWER. After excelling in her studies, which led to following her passion of Law and Economics at University, Rhonda decided to Join the Corporate World and found a new pleasure in her job, believing, "it's not work if you enjoy what you do". Along with her quest for knowledge her other passion is traveling and experiencing new and different adventures and cultures. This passion led her to have travelled to many different Countries over various continents from a Safari in Africa, climbing Mount Everest to Swimming in the Mediterranean Sea. All of which highlighted a wonderment for the Beauty of our World and all that was yet to be enjoyed and experienced. Rhonda is gifted with an extremely rare attribute called Optimism. With her ever so positive attitude she overcomes any challenges that comes her way, whether it be a problem in health or general displeasure Rhonda looks for the silver lining or lesson to be learnt. Her great enjoyment is reading and therefore as "Aunty Rhonda" she is known to regularly gift her Nieces and Nephews with books, to promote their education and learning, teaching them to expand their minds and that School and knowledge is a fun and exciting journey. It is for her belief that every child deserves to be surrounded by Love, Happiness, and Encouragement of Self-Belief that prompted Rhonda to write the "Powers of William and Friends” for her Nephews and Nieces and all children to enjoy. Rhonda believes that Happiness is a Choice and that each Child should be shown that they too have the "Power". For and on behalf of Rhonda Maroun Belinda Maroun

This book is short enough to keep his attention span interested, but the rhyme helps him learn to love his books. I can honestly say that my son adores this book as he laughs all the way through it because the pictures really get his attention. The author really seems to have a great grasp on what will appeal to young children and I am grateful to her for this wonderful book. A must for baby's bedtime/daytime routine. Beautiful illustrations by Rhonda Maroun, and a great story of family, friendship, and loyalty.

It helps to discover latent talent of a child By Mridula Every child belongs a latent talent and we should provide them effective support to unleash their inner power. This book is an effort to love, nurture, educate and open their eyes to all the possibilities that are before them. There is inspiration here in this book for innocent and new child to boost up their belief and spread their love among all in disguise of an amazing story. I found this story book very effective to encourage and support the children' ability to support their dreams.

Classical music was a huge part of my life during school. I played clarinet and then bass clarinet in high school and in doing so developed a huge appreciation for classical music. I wanted to get my children involved in music by having them learn piano, unfortunately they never quite grasped it and I did not know why. After reading Music for Kids I now have a full understanding on the mistakes I made. This book teaches you when to start piano lessons and their importance in the child's life. And it also explains why music in school is needed. It teaches you how to find and hire a private teacher. A big part of the book is a friendly interaction between Katie, a mother looking to get her child involved in music and her friend Rachel who Katie reaches out to for advice. This personal interaction between the friends is a wonderful narrative that I quite enjoyed.

It has helped me answer many questions, such as what age my daughter should start piano lessons. I didn’t want to enrol her without understanding the real benefits. It also gave me an understanding of other factors in relation to my daughter enrolling in piano lessons. The section about music being able to ease stress was also particularly interesting for me, as I never considered this as a factor. There is also a particularly interesting section on the Mozart Effect, which opened my eyes. A definite good read for anybody interested in this subject.

It's a valuable skill that you'll have the rest of your life and it's fun at the same time. I wanted my child to learn how to play the piano (since she expressed an interest). I purchased this book and I learned quite a lot. The guide has a lot of insightful information on kids learning piano. In the first chapter we learn all of the benefits of learning piano. In the 2nd and 3rd chapter the guide explains what kinds of pianos and keyboards are good to learn with. There is a lot of great information on how to find a quality piano teacher for your kid. The best parts of the guide in my view were the tips on how to improve the technique of playing the piano. Overall, this is a great guide for parents who want to teach their kids the wonderful skill of playing the piano.

By HeidiMarie Pagliassotto Silver Being new to the rental property world, I needed an easy to read and understand go to help guide... This book was just what I needed. I'm not going to go into the meat of the book, but it made me realize that self managing a property, tenants, and the maintenance could quickly become a full-time job, not what I need at this time. Well not until the properties begin to pay for themselves, that is!!

In these pages you’ll find riveting stories illustrating clear principles for achieving success with even the most trying of teenagers. In a job where average length of employment is measured in months, and many last only weeks, Mark Andreas not only survived, but thrived while working round-the-clock with troubled teens. Whether you are a parent, a teacher, a youth leader, or anyone wanting to connect with and support the teens in your life, may this book offer you an enjoyable road map on the journey. Excerpt from the Introduction: “I didn’t think you’d last beyond your first expedition,” the ex Army Ranger exclaimed, shaking my hand with a firm grasp despite missing nearly all of four fingers on his right hand. “When I first met you two years ago, I thought the kids would eat you up.” Memories from expedition after expedition flooded through me, reminding me why so many other trip leaders didn’t last. There was the time Toby drank his own pee and pooped in his hands, chasing the other kids around camp with his weapon of mass disruption, then dropping his bio-terrorism in favor of threatening to stab me with his tent stakes…. There was the time Christine and Kendra cheeked their meds, crushed them up, and did lines off the office toilet seat…. On our drive to New Mexico, Adrian had a temper tantrum and shattered the front windshield of the car…. And there was the expedition when Tom and Ken stole my Subaru key and managed to use it to start the pick-up truck in the middle of the night, escaping to a nearby town where they robbed a ski shop before driving the wrong way down a one-way street only to discover a police car coming the other direction…. These experiences profoundly transformed my understanding of how to work with youth, teaching me vital lessons that I want to share with you, so you can be as impactful as possible with the teens in your life.

Waltzing with Wolverines: Finding Connection and Cooperation with Troubled Teens, by Mark Andreas

Review “In Waltzing with Wolverines, Andreas redefines how to build relationship and trust with so-called ‘troubled’ youth. In these pages, you’ll find a treasure trove of teaching and leadership stories, tools, and techniques. But this book is about much more than a list of behavior management strategies—it’s a clarion call to re-envision our relationship with our young people by creating relationships that are simultaneously more empowering and more effective for instructors and students alike. This is a must read for anyone working in the fields of wilderness therapy and outdoor education.” —Jay Roberts, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Education, Earlham College “This book is a wonderful guide, not only for parents of ‘troubled’ or ‘resistant’ kids, but for every parent. If Mark had given only bullet points, like so many other books do, I'd have read and forgotten them by now. Instead, through the memorable stories Mark tells, the lessons are still clear in my mind. I wish I could have read this wise book when our children were younger, but I’ll buy it for them now before they make the same mistakes with our precious grandchildren.” —Ben Leichtling, Ph.D. Author of How to stop bullies in their tracks and Bullies Below the Radar. “Waltzing with Wolverines is a remarkable piece of work. This is a book of practical, nuts-and-bolts wisdom about working with youth on the edge. Anyone who works with young people will find useful ideas and inspiration in these pages.” —Mark Gerzon, author of Leading through Conflict (Harvard Business School Press) “If you are a parent, you need to commit the principles and techniques expressed in this book to your heart and mind so that you can remain sane during adolescence. If your child is already a teenager this book will become your and your child's best friend. Using the techniques expressed so eloquently by the author allows you not only to reconcile problems expressed by your children, your spouse, your colleagues but also to reconcile the more frustrating and problematic non-expressed problems, all in a non-confronting manner. This book should be a mainstay of communication programs.” —Melissa J. Roth CHt., Ph.D. “Mark doesn’t just discuss theories and philosophies of becoming a master facilitator for ‘at risk’ youth, he models how it works in almost any possible scenario with brilliance, patience and true genius! If you want to become a master leader with teens in any venue, then this book is your bible for how to do it with great humanness, compassion, humor and brilliance.” —Kimberly Kassner, author of, You’re a Genius—And I Can Prove It! and Founder of EmpowerMind

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. it is a book I recommend to every parent By Donald Samson Whether parent, caregiver or education professional, we are all faced with the dilemma and challenge how to get children to do what we want them to do. We try all of the usual strategies when requesting no longer works: coaxing, urging, insisting, bribing, threatening, force. It is an escalation we are all familiar with, and it is never satisfying. In Waltzing with Wolverines, Mark Andreas has given us an outstanding "field manual" how to replace ineffective outer authority by developing an inner authority and a human connection with the children in our care. Although it is written in the context of working with troubled teens, it is a book I recommend to every parent, every children's caregiver, every teacher and educational professional. Through these lessons we can learn to connect with children in a manner that respects them and still supports the adult in upholding the outcome that is in the child's best interests. Children are always asking us through their behavior to "show up," not just tell them what to do. This books leads us to our own inner development so we can meet children in that authentic place where true connection is possible.

By Grace Garrett Waltzing with Wolverines is full of stories, advice and practical, helpful tools for empowering youth to connect and build relationships with themselves, their peers and adults in their lives at critical crossroads in their development. Mark has a valuable, rare blend of personality, expertise, experiences and education that is reflected in his compassion, skill and wisdom in working with youth in crisis. As a professional youth minister and certified counselor I worked with many youth facing crisis. I wish I had had Waltzing with Wolverines back then! It resonated with my experiences and taught me tools and techniques that are effective (that I didn't even learn in grad school). It reaffirmed my experience that young people respond positively to truly being heard, being authentically respected and treated with genuine compassion. Waltzing with Wolverines is full of heart and compassion! I cried and I laughed and I kept saying "YES" to myself as I read it! Waltzing with Wolverines is a keeper! A companion! Mark's writing style is easy to follow and his story telling makes you feel like you are there with him and the young people. Anyone who cares about young people can benefit from the book! If I was training youth ministers, teachers, coaches, it would be assigned reading. Waltzing with Wolverines is a rare, valuable guide on how to engage young people, even those with severe difficulties, in meaningful relationships where trust, respect, authenticity, and compassion are consistent and genuine! My favorite book on working with youth since the 1990's and I have read many since then!
