By Kimberly Long After hearing Jessica speak at a recent women's conference, I couldn't believe what all she had been through—because this girl exudes joy! Her book is so genuine and real and helped me see suicide in a different light, concerning eternity. Since reading her book, I had a friend who lost her son through suicide on Christmas Eve also and then met an acquaintance who lost his son 1 ½ years ago. I gave this book to my friend and referred my acquaintance to this book. It's so hard to know what to say to someone who is going through this horrible tragedy and to have a resource like this is a gem!If you don't have this book, it is one you will want to add to your library of resources for helping others and also to give you a better understanding toward those going through such an unthinkable nightmare. It will give you compassion and empathy; at the same time you will be encouraged by Jessica's heart of forgiveness and desire to always please God!

Thanks to God that I haven't lost a child, neither go thru the pain of having a son or daughter in drugs, however I have gone thru many difficult situations in my life; I have doubted at times if God is there seeing what's is wrong in this world. Through the pages of this book I have been amazed of the Faith Jessica had to believe God's promises. At the end I was SHAKEN to see how the story develops as I cried. GOD IS GOOD! powerful testimony for people like me.

We've been married more than 20 years, and I sort of thought I wouldn't be teaching my old dog any new tricks. Well, I am just over half way through this book, and he's already learning new tricks (wink). I guess I am really the old dog who is learning the new tricks - regardless, it's working. I am now catching myself asking "why" or repeating what I ask my husband to do. I think I'd been nagging more than I would have thought.A couple of weeks ago, I asked him two or three times to fix a leaking toilet. After a few days, I called the plumber. It was very minor and fixed in a matter of minutes. My husband saw the paid bill and almost choked at $90 for 10 minutes of work. I didn't say a word until he asked. I then explained that I'd asked him a few times, but figured since he didn't get around to it that he must be very busy, so I called someone. A few days later the ice maker started acting up.... yep, he fixed it the first time I asked. No fussing, no nagging.... just results.

155 of 173 people found the following review helpful. Disappointing By Pamcake318 I was excited about this book and I have a lot of respect for Dr. Leman, but honestly this was a BIG let down for me. If you fit into the male and female stereotypes he describes, this would probably be a helpful book for you. (I guess a lot of people do - they call them stereotypes for a reason.) The Dr. simply told me "You are like this, your man is like this, so do this..." And, by the way, in his book, there is nothing outside the box of these "normal people" except the extremes - abusers, people who are married but secretly gay, etc... I just flat out didn't identify. I am not like the women he describes and my husband isn't like his description of a man either. It was so frustrating I had to keep myself from throwing it at the wall. (This is one reason my husband says he hates these books - he doesn't like "being generalized" and I totally agree after reading this.)I also got the sense while reading it that Dr. Leman subscribes to an idea that females like to feel superior. He appealed to that as a way of helping me change my behavior so my inferior husband will do what I want. He referred to men being "dumb as dirt" "children" and "like a dog that can be trained". He told women to talk a certain way to them, use body language like turning away to make a point, reward good behavior with sex, etc. And then he said "don't manipulate". Really?? If I did what you told me to that's exactly what I feel like I would be doing. Sorry, but my husband is not dumb. I respect him a lot. He is a good man. He just struggles with my need to be pursued since we are already married. Any advice on that? Sadly, No.Dr. Leman is right about a few things such as, Men's need to be respected, needed, appreciated, not nagged... But there are MUCH better books out there that address this. "Love and Respect" by Dr. Emmerson Eggerich is one of them.

Good Information for Any Marriage By Christine Abraham When asked to review this book for the publisher Baker-Revell, I saw the title and thought "That's Crazy!" Later I changed my mind and thought it would be fun to review this book. My decision was correct-the book was fun to read!Dr. Leman writes with humor and understanding as he explains to his female audience How to Have a New Husband by Friday. He is a Christian therapist, father of four daughters and married over 45 years to the same women. He shares this experience with his readers in a humorous yet informative manner.While there are numerous marriage books to choose from, this book is different because it examines the childhood role models and learning patterns that affect us in adult marriages. Dr. Leman shares examples of a husband raised by an Overprotective Mother, No-Room-to-Fail Mama, Driven Mother and Disciplining Mother. The fresh look at your husband's parental influence awakens a new awareness for your marriage.When you read the book, you won't have a new husband by Friday but you will have a new attitude about his behavior and your reactions. It's good information for any marriage, healthy or struggling. And its fun to read!

In my experience, learning about homeschooling was fairly straightforward and knowing the downside of public schooling was fairly intuitive, but taking my kids out of school was still a very challenging decision that took me about year to make. The biggest obstacles turned out to be that I was schooled myself and had a very hard time imagining not using public schools since they are everybody’s default ‘state of nature’. I also couldn’t adequately develop empathy for my own children when it came to what they were enduring in public school and nor thought about what school would ultimately do to them. This book is to help inform the decision process to leave school and free your children to learn at home. What you do once you get those kids out of school is a topic for another book and luckily there are plenty. I chose the title “Rise Above School” because that’s what children do when they opt out. The school and culture like to use the term “dropping out” to suggest that leaving school is a failure of the student somehow. We must abandon this victim language once and for all. School is not a nice place to succeed in, it is something that should be rejected, tossed to history’s landfill and left to die. Ideally, we use the term “home education” instead of “homeschooling” because the later implies replicating “school” at home, which isn’t desirable. Only school can be school. Instead, we want to foster intrinsic-inspired learning at home. This said, “homeschooling” is common vernacular and I use it interchangeably in this book to mean “home education”. The initial basis of this book was several articles and podcasts I created at my blog site found at http://www.fivehundredyears.org. As the articles came, common themes emerged and it seemed natural to put them together under one cover. As background, I’ve self-studied education, public schooling and home education for two to three years now. I unschool my three young children. I’m an entrepreneur and a husband. I’m an advocate for home education and ending public school. And I’m a radical for peace and prosperity. If you are new to home education ideas or new to even thinking about public school itself, I commend you for trying to learn more, regardless of what you decide. Despite education being the most important decision families ever make for their children, most people don’t think about it for even five minutes. The choice you are making involves committing your children to 13 years of school, representing about 15,000 hours of work, all of which can set the direction of your children’s entire lives. Put the time in to research, analyze and process this 15,000-hour whopper of a decision. Please.

A list so powerful, simple, and clear it's hard to imagine ever seeing school the same or wanting to send your kids there after reading.But Rise Above School is much more than that. The author presents an incredibly honest and accessible story of his own process of moving from unthinking adherent to the educational status quo to a parent embarking on a radical unschooling lifestyle. The core insight is one of empathy. What your kids suffer through - bus stops, early alarms, homework, single-file and cinder block cells, lunchrooms, bullies, age-segregation, boredom - is something you would not want to put yourself through, or your spouse, or employees. How then can you do it to your kids?Jeff is not romantic in his portrayal of home education, nor bitter in his exploration of schooling. He's refreshingly down to earth. Though moral and practical arguments underpin his advocacy of home education, he shares plainly some of the more compelling reasons in simple things like daily life being more fun and less boring. No need to construct elaborate curricula. Just enjoy your kids. Let them sleep in. Play video games with them.Rise Above School is an ideal intro to the concept and arguments surrounding education for someone a little disillusioned with mass schooling, but unsure what to do. This book challenged my own conceptions of the role and purpose of education. It doesn't have to be just a means to an end, but it can be an end in and of itself. This book made me realize that the current school system is designed as a means to an end. Even as someone yet without children, I could relate to the argument for empathy for children. I remember how much it bothered me as a child to be told to be quiet and to be confined to a desk for hours and hours every week. I highly recommend anyone who is skeptical about the effectiveness of the current "schooling" system in the United States to check out the compelling case for a better alternative highlighted here. I'll be gifting this to family members with young children.

This book was quite different in that our heroine, Maddie had an usual problem to deal with and also a very tragic past that was a bit of a mystery. This is a story on an emotional and mental level. If you are looking for a lot of action or tons of drama, this is not it. But if you like an in depth look at what has made someone the way they are and most of it, not of their own doing, this is intriguing. How this is handled and how all the characters deal with the past is what makes this story so gripping.The family dynamics present are charming and realistic. The town life we are immersed in is based on its smallness and being a tourist town, also charming. All the characters are very well created and I felt felt I knew them.We have two very attractive, likable main characters. We also have absolutely gorgeous descriptions of the island of Lana'i. Edie excels in bringing the scenes to life. The reader feels like they are there.I am looking forward to reading more about Maddie and Kai and Ben and Haley.Edie's writing is flawless and a pure delight to read! I also appreciate all the research done, I learn a lot.

The characters were engaging. But I loved Leaving Lana'i. Maybe it was the description s of the different weathers as I hate the cold. I really enjoyed the characters, though I have never suffered from the problems Maddie does. And Kai is just gorgeous. Both books have unusual plotlines that are fully developed. I don't like reviews that tell the whole story, but both these books are worth a read. I can't wait for the next one.

Her books are interesting, loveable and keep you interested from page 1 to the end. I am so thankful I found her. I have read all her books and each one is better than the last. I honestly wish there were more representations of cultures and mixed race people in the media. So I wrote this book for multiracial families like mine, and other families who want to embrace diversity and acceptance. It’s important for children to see themselves as they develop a sense of community and belonging. It is our responsibility – as parents and as a nation – to make children feel included not just in their home, but in the classroom and in life. Racial and ethnic group differences have a significant impact on children's social development. Although the impact varies according to age and ethnicity, it is important for children to take pride in their heritage. I hope to shine a spotlight on the issue of mixed race with my Kobi books, and offer something to multiracial families with which they can identify.

As mixed race children looking to go to school as an ethnic minority in Australia, this book explains that the differences in skin colour is only skin deep (for lack of better words). Telling the story from the perspective of a young child ensures that my children can relate to the main character of Kobi.

By Edward L Zimmerman Despite being a pretty quick read, SMUGGLER’S RUN is actually very good, much of which is owed to the fact that (A) it stars Han Solo; (B) it guest stars the best (and biggest) co-pilot in the Outer Rim, namely Chewbacca; and (C) it’s a web spun by no less than Greg Rucka, a guy who’s probably forgotten more about quality entertainment than most people ever learn.Basically, what you have with SMUGGLER’S RUN is a Solo-mission set not long after the events depicted in STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE, back in the time when Han was a bit more disillusioned (still) about the Rebellion than he was ever in favor of it (a problem I thought that plagued STAR WARS: RETURN OF THE JEDI, by don’t get me started on that!). Rucka’s Solo feels more like the smuggler from A NEW HOPE, a guy whose wisecracks were a bit more sparing then happened in the latter two films of the Original Trilogy. He was always ready with a blaster, this one was, and that lovable space pirate returns for much of this adventure, and it’s great to see the hotshot pilot back in top form.If anything, I could quibble about how quickly this RUN ends. About the time it’s kicking into high gear, a reader quickly realizes there aren’t all that many pages left, and I definitely would’ve loved to have spent more time with Solo, Chewbacca, and Beck, the villainous Imperial officer who uses cybernetic enhancements to outmatch those she hunts.And – would you expect otherwise? Any time Solo’s around, you know the bounty hunters can’t be that far off. In RUN, Rucka creates a squad that appears at times like it’s bound to take down the Falcon’s captain, and that’s only part of the magic smuggled into these pages.Like the others YA releases that’ve hit the shelves in anticipation of THE FORCE AWAKENS, this one is bookended with an older lead character (Solo) spinning a yarn for anyone who’ll listen; and Rucka quite possibly makes the best use of that narrative device here, combining healthy parts and characters from both timeframes into the action. Still, I didn’t find it as exciting a space trip as Luke Skywalker’s THE WEAPON OF A JEDI, but it’s leaps and bounds better than Princess Leia’s MOVING TARGET, a slow-moving jaunt that offers little legitimate peril.

It's Han Solo right after Yavin, allowing himself to be convinced to run an emergency mission for the Rebels. The characterization is top-notch and the story does a great job of showcasing the dark side of the Empire without getting too nasty -- perfect for the 5th-9th graders this story is aimed at. This is a fun read for middle schoolers and adult fans alike.

It's sharply paced, cleverly written, and full of all the charm and excitement that a Han and Chewbacca adventure could ever need. It starts off running and doesn't slow down until the, albeit slightly abrupt, ending, and while the story isn't anything we haven't seen before––Han and Chewie are sent to a backwater planet to extract a Rebel soldier before a ruthless Imperial can get to him––author Greg Rucka writes with such an electric style that once I started the book I couldn't put it down.Rucka writes some of the best Han and Chewie moments I've seen from the Star Wars novels in years, and his passion for the universe he's playing is immediately apparent and undeniably infectious. Even with only 180 pages, Rucka tells a story that thrives off of its characters, and somehow manages to not only deliver an outstanding Han and Chewie escapade, but also introduce us to several new characters who I wouldn't mind seeing more of in the future.If you're looking for a quick, purely enjoyable Star Wars action romp, then "Smuggler's Run" is just the book for you. It doesn't come packed with any substantial hints about The Force Awakens, although the story is bookended by a tantalizing peak at what Han and Chewie are up to in their moderately older age, but rather focuses on delivering a fast-paced story full of intrigue, action, and a fantastic cast of characters. It's Star Wars in its purest, and simplest, form, and is absolutely worth picking up.

About the Author Diane Lapp is a Distinguished Professor of Education at San Diego State University, where her research and instruction focuses on issues related to struggling readers and writers, their families, and their teachers. An instructional coach for the Health Sciences High and Middle College in San Diego, she has recently returned to the classroom to teach sixth-grade English and Earth Science. Dr. Lapp is also a member of both the California and International Reading Halls of Fame for her dedication to reading instruction.Diane Lapp, EdD, is Distinguished Research Professor of Language and Literacy in the Department of Teacher Education at San Diego State University, and has taught in elementary and middle schools. Her major areas of research and instruction have been issues related to urban struggling readers and their families. Dr. Lapp directs and teaches in field-based preservice and graduate programs and continues to team-teach in public school classrooms. She has coauthored and edited many articles, columns, handbooks, and children's materials on reading and language arts, and has chaired or cochaired several International Reading Association (IRA) and National Reading Conference committees. The recipient of many awards for her teaching and research, Dr. Lapp is the coeditor of the literacy journal "The California Reader. James Flood, PhD, is Distinguished Research Professor of Language and Literacy at San Diego State University (SDSU); has taught in preschool, elementary, and secondary schools; and has been a language arts supervisor and vice principal. He was a Fulbright scholar at the University of Lisbon in Portugal and the President of the National Reading Conference. Dr. Flood has chaired and cochaired many committees of the International Reading Association (IRA), National Council of Teachers of English, National Council of Researchers in English, and National Reading Conference. Currently Dr. Flood teaches graduate courses at SDSU. He has coauthored and edited many articles, columns, handbooks, and children's materials on reading and language arts. The recipient of many awards for his teaching and research, Dr. Flood is the coeditor of "The California Reader and a member of the board ofdirectors of the IRA. Kelly Moore, PhD, is a literacy resource teacher in the San Diego Unified School District, where she teaches at a large urban elementary school that has formed a unique collaboration with a middle school, high school, and San Diego State University. Within this partnership, Dr. Moore collaborates with teachers from all grade levels on literacy staff development, preservice education, and beginning teacher support. Her primary interest is the assessment/n-/instruction connection in early literacy classrooms. Her recently completed dissertation focused on teachers' effectiveness at planning diagnostic instruction. She was awarded the Constance McCullough Research Award by the California Reading Association for this study. Through her continued research, writing, and teaching, Dr. Moore hopes to promote teacher education and future research in the area of early literacy. Maria Nichols, MA, is a literacy staff developer in the San Diego Unified School District. An elementary school teacher for 16 years and a National Board Certified teacher, Ms. Nichols now supports teachers at all grade levels in urban elementary schools as they strengthen their content knowledge and instructional practice. She has worked as a demonstration and resource teacher in an elementary professional development site and has led workshops nationwide on literacy content and instruction. Ms. Nichols received the Outstanding Achievement in Literacy Award from the Greater San Diego Reading Council of the California Reading Association in 1998 and the Distinguished Elementary Educator of 2002 Award from the San Diego Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa. Her current focus is on classroom environmentsand instructional design that encourage students of all ages to use talk as a tool for developing comprehension. Nancy Farnan teaches at San Diego State University and is committed to working with preservice and inservice teachers and their students to ensure that all children have an opportunity to join the ranks of the most literate individuals on the face of the earth. She has a background as a middle and secondary English teacher and Reading Specialist, teaching in the Midwest and California.

This text is an excellent resource for college-level literacy courses or any educator looking for strategies to incorporate literacy instruction into the content area. As educators, we are all teachers of literacy. Yet sometimes we struggle to focus on key literacy skills are students need to develop, due in large part to the abundance of content covered in any partituclar discipline's curriculum. Lapp offers her readers an excellent compilation of strategies and lesson approaches to make the teaching of literacy possible in every classroom.

Reynolds Reading this book diligently from cover to cover is the equivalent of taking a graduate level reading course. The individual articles include a practical grounding in reading theory as well as a thorough study of the role reading and writing play in the content areas at the junior high or secondary levels. As a secondary teacher, I often find that texts promise relevancy for older teenagers, but fail to deliver on that promise. Not this book! All the principles and ideas have application for high school students. I was especially impressed by the freshness of the research in this 3rd Edition. The majority of the research quoted was post 2000, but there was also a firm grounding in seminal research in the field (Vygotsky, Rosenblatt). This book is appropriate for both pre-service or in-service teachers.

All those who are put in same situation know how much can this problem influence one’s physical and mental condition. One does not like himself in the mirror and feels humiliated while confronted by other thin people. I tried a few different programs to achieve fat loss which worked for me only partially. I went through the book and will definitely apply tips mentioned inside. The most revealing was for me 3rd chapter of the book about unconventional tips and tricks of weight loss. Points which the author established in the book are accurate and relevant

By Amanda Frey I feel like I dictated this book to the the author because it includes everything I would put in a book like this!!! It has the foods to eat and why they should be eaten; nutritional values; recipes and menus. The only other piece of information I would have liked to be included is why one cannot eat grapefruit if taking antidepressants.So buy with confidence and enjoy. If you are like me, you won't mind missing all the bad food you should avoid.

By Yvonne There are so much health and diet books out there and it's kinda frustrating enough that most of them won't work for you, but this book is exactly the opposite of it. Comprehensive, easy to do and so many important tips that I haven't read from other diet books. This book is really worth the money, time and effort. I'm simply happy that the book is really helpful.

By Leah At their older sister Chelsea's flash fortieth birthday party, twin sisters Annie and Lauren wonder how their life has paled in comparison to their sisters. Why is it that Chelsea has a fantastic husband who caters to her every whim whereas Annie's husband spends most of his time fishing and Lauren's lover is married with two kids? There and then Annie and Lauren make a vow: this year everything will be different and they will follow their dreams. Annie's dream is to walk the Inca trail in Peru whereas Lauren wants lover Jude to finally leave his wife for her. Can the sisters make their dreams come true or is it too little, too late?It's Now Or Never is kind of similar to Carole's last release That Loving Feeling. Annie and Greg's (from It's Now or Never) were very similar to Juliet and Rick (from That Loving Feeling): their marriage seems to be falling apart at their ears, their children don't respect them at all. The two marriages really were eerily similar and it was like I was reading about Rick and Juliet again (which wasn't a bad thing - I adored Rick and Juliet). Furthermore since the marriages were similar I found Annie and Greg just as likable.Lauren, Annie's twin sister, was a fantastic character. I looked forward to her all the chapters told from her perspective. Her storyline was a bit tired and something that appears in every single book I seem to be reading at the moment but for me, I enjoyed it. I can't say I was a fan of Lauren being a mistress but she seemed incredibly sweet, if a little naive. As her lover Jude keeps letting her down, I thought it was fantastic that her friend Zak was there to help prop her up. I knew early on how Lauren's storyline would end (it's kind of hinted at really early on) but for me the question wasn't if Lauren would ever figure out things about Jude and Zak but when it would happen.When I first read the synopsis on Amazon I thought Chelsea, the twins' older sister, may have been in the book a bit more - even have some chapters about her life - but she rarely makes appearances which was a bit disappointing. It seemed that Chelsea was going through some difficult times which weren't properly resolved by the end of the book which was also disappointing. A lot is made about how different Chelsea's life is compared to Annie and Lauren so it wouldn't have added an interesting perspective to see how Chelsea's life was seemingly falling apart around her ears.Carole's writing is, as always, fantastic. I find it very easy to get into her books and could read Carole all day long. I thoroughly enjoyed reading It's Now or Never and apart from a few quibbles I did find it an absorbing read. There are a few chapters on fishing as Greg enjoys fishing and I thought I would have found those chapters boring but I didn't, at all. I found them quite interesting - which really surprised me, I never had myself down for wanting to learn about fish. Some people may find them a bit dull but they really gave us insight into Greg's mind, which was very clever. It's Now or Never is a must-read and I hugely enjoyed reading the book. Right - when's the next Carole Matthews book out?...

Where something has to change or you'll go crazy?Well, in a nutshell, that's what this novel is about.Annie is stuck in a marriage with two kids, whose only idea of fun is racing from one party to the next and getting drunk, and a husband who is content as long as he has a fishing rod in his hand.Annie's twin, Lauren wants what Annie has. A husband (minus the fishing rod). There's only one small problem. Correction, one big problem. The man she wants, her boyfriend of several years, has already met another woman's 'husbandy' needs.If you ever need that extra push toward your dreams, this book could be for you. As always I found myself rooting for the characters, not wanting it to end. Carole's writing is funny and endearing, I am already looking forward to next book.
