Great for a snowy day By BrittyMama As the title so nicely states, this book follows the adventures of "A curious stuffed buffalo, a sensitive plush stingray, and a book-loving rubber ball". These three friends each have very different outlooks on life: Lumphy the Buffalo is always wondering about this or that, StingRay always has a very poetic response to Lumphy's questions, and Plastic (the rubber ball) is a bit of a know-it-all and chimes in with her book smarts on the matter.The trio decides to journey out into the snow for the first time and we follow their fresh observations and discoveries. Watching these personalities discover snow for the first time is heartwarming and this book is a wonderful story to read to get little ones excited about snow and winter. There is a bit of freshness, crispness, and innocence to this book- it is beautiful in its simplicity. Personally, I am not a fan of snow but it is hard not to smile as these friends experience the awe and wonder that is one's very first snowstorm.

Lumpy, StingRay, and Plastic belong to a little girl who's gone away on a winter vacation, leaving her toys at home. The toys set off on an adventure of their own for the day. Together they get ready, and head outside to play in the snow. There they discover how snow changes the tree in the yard, what snow really looks like, the fun that is had in the snow like playing a sled, playing on the ice, and building a snowman. As the sun begins to set, they head inside to the warm of their house and await the little girls return.I loved the each of the character provides a different perspective on snow and how it changes the landscape of the yard. Lumpy has many questions about what snow is. His curiosity is one I think many young readers will like, because his questions are very similar to what they would ask. StingRay has answers that I loved, because StingRay's answers were from the heart, and what he thought snow was. Plastic had the more scientific answers to what snow really was. Together, their dialogue is very much age appropriate and one children will understand.TOYS MEET SNOW is a magical story with lovely illustrations, and charming characters. This is a book that has a timeless feel to it, and one we absolutely loved reading. This is a picture book even the youngest of beginning readers will love. The adorable illustrations draw readers in, the characters are ones you wish you had in your playroom, and the dialogue is easy to understand and follow along with. Lumpy, StingRay and Plastic are characters readers, parents and educators are sure to fall in love with, if they haven't already.Whether you're a long time fan of the 'Toys Go Out' chapter books or are new to the characters, TOYS MEET SNOW is picture book fans of all ages will enjoy.

By Sandy Brehl Disclaimer: I am such a fan of the TOYS series that I opened the book knowing I'd love it. Sometimes that happens and I have to admit disappointment, even if slight.In this case, it met and exceeded my expectations.I love these characters, and seeing them in color, in their delightfully determined, cooperative adventure to explore the snow, made a sheer fantasy surprisingly believable. Their distinct personalities radiate across horizontal double-spread illustrations that amplify their points of view regarding the natural/magical world.What a wonderful experience this will be for even the youngest readers, but for anyone who knows (or ever knew) that those toys filling our lives have secret lives as rich as our own. Pair this with the three short chapter books featuring Lumphy, Starfish, and Plastic, as well as Kevin Henkes's recent picture book, WAITING.That's what I call a happy adventure for anyone.

By Bookworm64 Didn't like it as much as the Introduction to the History of the Principal Kingdoms, mostly because of the arguments on religion nearly ruining the overall theme of the book. This was caused by the translator trying to show that religion still had a place in political life (which Pufendorf was against) and the way he turns some of the phrases into muck. The good part is that there are notations to give you a better idea of what Pufendorf was trying to say, the bad was I felt it interrupted the flow of the book. I know that they are reprinting the actual 1691 translation, but when the translator's phrasing actually undermines the argument he it trying to convey, I feel there has to be a better way than a number and small paragraph at the bottom of the page. I did like the subject material, though. It was a very good book for learning about how people should behave in society, ideally, in a legal framework rather than religiously inspired, and an excellent companion to The Law of Nations by Vattel. I just couldn't enjoy it as much as i could have, knowing the translator was thwarting the writer! Hopefully you can, because there is a lot to learn from the pages of this book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another wonderful story from Destry Ramey! By Frederick B. Godwin I own the entire series of books written by Destry Ramey. Each book is very special. I have read the three earlier books to my elementary students since they were first published. The newest book in the series is a wonderful addition. All four of the pugs are still important parts of the story as is the new "star" Feather. When I first read to my students about Feather being thrown from the car in a brown paper bag, I had tears running down my cheeks. The children were so concerned that I was crying. I told them that I just couldn't imagine someone doing that to a little puppy. They all agreed. This lead to a discussion about the way to treat animals and how to help animals in need. Several students said that they have rescue dogs at home. The story is so uplifting and joyful. There are so many themes in this book that can be talked about with elementary children. My class loved that Max was able to adopt Lucy. The race at the end of the book was so exciting. I read The Brown Paper Bag to my class the next day and the students got even more excited about the race! Jesus Chavez has done a wonderful job with the illustrations. His art work compliments the story perfectly. I'm buying a copy of this book for each great niece and nephew in the family and one for our school library.

Ramey has once again made me fall in love with the Pugs and now with Feather By Midnight Butterfly I was almost in tears and ready to go rescue...wait, you'll have to read it to see who I wanted to rescue. As with the other books in the Pug Series (www.ThePugs.com) Ms. Ramey has once again made me fall in love with the Pugs and now with Feather. Although written for children, the lessons in these books are lessons that adults need to remember too. Love you Feather and Ms. Ramey.

The fact that it is a true story about a real dog (Feather) makes it all the more appealing ! Great story for all young ages. The illustrations are extremely well done. This book undoubtedly deserves a read. Both my grands kids loved this clever story.

He is an absolute master of the short story and the poem. A collection of Poe's writings is a welcome addition to any bookshelf. I would not, however, chose this particular collection.Because all of his works fit handsomely in a single volume, there is no real need to purchase a "selected works" version like this one. There are other "value priced" editions that have everything and you will be better off with one of them. Look for the term "complete works."Poe's writings do not disappoint, but this presentation of his writings does.

This is an excellent book, it has gold leaf paper and its own bookmark and has a GREAT sum of his work although some 'may' be missing but all the great ones are there such as the infamous The Raven and The Masque of Red Death, The Fall of The House of Usher among many others; to keep this short and simple this book is well worth the price and looks better in person then what amazon shows. Do keep in mind like I said this is a very nice book and only buy it if your either an avid Poe fan or want a great book to add to your growing library (like me), otherwise buy a paperback if you want something to tote around with you between classes etc.

By Avid Star Wars Book Fan “Weapon of the Jedi” a fantastic title in the best tradition of Star Wars. It will delight the young readers and make the adults revisit their inner child. Jason Fry understands what makes a SW story work and delivers it with heart and imagination.STORY: It’s a short tale set in one location that feels like an act of a much larger play and yet managed to capture all the core elements of a “hero’s journey.” We find Luke still as a young, naïve rebel pilot learning what it means to be a Jedi. The Force is the central theme of the book and I was delighted with Jason’s treatment of it. Once again the Force is a magical power surrounded with mysticism. Here the Jedi are a legend of old wizards who stood of peace (not generals in the military or a space police force.) Chapter 8 in particular left me with a sense of wonder, bringing back Yoda’s teachings from Ep.V. It is a true return to form and the best part the book. There’s also a colorful cast of supporting characters, a beautifully fleshed out exotic location, and solid action. Nothing here is particularly innovative but, more importantly, the story is expertly told, with vivid prose and a sense of urgency!CHARACTERS: I was instantly sold on Luke’s characterization. Jason Fry effortlessly recreates the Luke we love and remember from the films. Mark Hamill’s mannerism never feels forced. He literally comes alive from the pages and responds to situations the way you would expect him to. Luke’s first steps into learning how to control, or rather submit to the force is also beautifully portrayed! (In “Heir to the Jedi” novel he movies noodles for practice, which I found completely absurd! Here the force is not a trivial “mind trick.” There’s a logical narrative extension of his training from Ep.IV taken to the next step!)The same is true with R2 and Threepio, their back and forth banter is on the money! The new cast is there mainly for support and help add purpose to the plot.ACTION: Without giving anything away I will say the action was quite enjoyable. Parents buying the book for their children shouldn’t worry about the level of violence. The writer avoids brutal vocabulary but gives just enough hints for adult readers to image its full extent. The space battle is vivid and well-choreographed and there is a cool surprise for the ground battle.I’ve read practically all of the existing Star Wars novels and thought I would never read anything as great as Kevin J. Anderson’s and Rebecca Moesta’s famous “Young Jedi Knights” series. I was very pleasantly surprised with this book. Thank you Jason Fry. I’m looking forward to new great SW stories from you in the years to come!

34 of 38 people found the following review helpful. A True Luke Skywalker Story By Sarah Gesell This is a wonderful and FUN Luke Skywalker story! The main story takes place shortly after Episode IV and showcases how Luke began to develop his skills in the force and also how he began to learn to wield a lightsaber. Unlike "Heir to the Jedi" the Luke in this story feels like the Luke we know and love from the original series. He, R2D2, and C-3PO are wonderfully portrayed and the story clips along at a good pace.This book is aimed at middle schoolers, grades 5-9, and I think that fits very well. The dialog and word choice should be challenging but not inscrutable for that age range. And happily, this is also a great story for adult fans as well.

A Terrific Tale Of 'Exploration' Told When Luke Was Still Young And Reckless By Edward L Zimmerman Jason Fry delivers a pretty grand adventure helping to fill in the gaps between the films STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE and STAR WARS: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK with his new Young Adult novel, Star Wars: The Weapon Of A Jedi. This is a great tale, one which returns Luke to the days when he wasn’t quite sure what becoming a Jedi would mean: he’s only used the Force sparingly, and – now that Ben Kenobi is gone – he’s uncertain of how to continue building his skills on his quest to (ahem) follow in the footsteps of his “once great father.”As such, Fry does a masterful job creating a set of circumstances wherein Skywalker faces perilous circumstances within the context of this ‘new’ tale. (For those unaware, this is one of a series of YA novels done as tie-ins for the upcoming STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS motion picture.) Of course, readers know that Luke isn’t going to die any time soon here, but the story is structured in such a way that it’s clear that greater universe and a few new characters remain under the dire influence of an oppressive Empire.As for the story? The galaxy’s best Starfighter pilot gets shackled with an underperforming Y-Wing in a rather mundane mission to recover some data at the behest of Mon Mothma; yet the chance encounter with Imperial forces lands Luke and his faithful droids C-3PO and R2-D2 down on a jungle planet with some previously unknown connection to the Force. Might this be the very world wherein the Jedi Master might seek refuge in his later days? And what about those Imperials hot on his tail?The Weapon Of The Jedi is a great adventure that might seem a bit quick or contrived to others; and I’d say – were that the case – that those aren’t really fans of a younger, less polished Luke Skywalker. This is the anxious farmboy – the one wishing for an escape only to find what one wishes for may not ultimately be to one’s liking – and he’s now alone on his quest to become a Jedi Knight. He’s questioning his place and his abilities, and if that set of circumstances appeals to you then you’d do well to pick this YA novel up and return to those days. If that era doesn’t interest you, then this one probably won’t mean much.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Very well written and an incredible message for kids to hear. So glad they made this Young Reader version. By jaxon814 My 8-year old son reads a lot of the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" books and that sort of "book" :/, so it was such a breath of fresh air to introduce him to a book that is SO WELL WRITTEN, and has such a great message of perseverance and overcoming obstacles. The Audience Guide says 4th-7th grade, but I think even younger grades might be ok, especially if parents read it with, or to, their 1st-4th grader, as the subject matter in parts can be a little emotional, and a few concepts would be helpful to pause and talk about. (I wanted to pause and talk about ALL the parts!!) The way the book jumps from Joe's childhood to adulthood every-other chapter might be confusing at first if kids aren't familiar with that literary device. One thing that would have helped this confusion is if the book designer/publisher made the little icon of the rowers under the chapter # (which is ALWAYS the same) different for the chapters that have to do with his youth. For example, only use that crew/boat icon on the chapters about the UW team, but for the other chapters use a different icon/illustration that has to do with his childhood to help guide the reader when there's a time switch.I have not read the original version, but plan to because this was such a compelling and captivating story. I hope they make a movie out of it, too.

For the description of Nazi Germany alone one should read this book. The description of the Olympic Race is just like one was there. The characters are so well drawn you learn to hate and love them --depending on who they are. I cannot laud this book enough

After many years out of school, I have recently taken an interest in the details of phonics. I have started reading the first book of the wonderful old McGuffey's Readers. How to Teach Phonics adds the equivalent of teachers notes to my pursuit by providing a systematic approach for the first four years of reading including general rules for pronunciation.

I am not the most technical person there is and most of the time rely on my brothers to have things fixed around the house. It can be quite inconvenient though to need something and not be able to use it simply because you do not know how to fix it when it breaks down. I got this book over the weekend and absolutely loved it. Harry has taught me so much in terms of fixing simple bugs that I encounter on my Echo. It has never been so much simpler and I am definitely glad that I can now do without my brother's help!

It taught me to never give up on myself when I may feel doubtful of my personal achievements. It is an easy read with powerful lessons! I would recommend purchasing this book. This book is for anyone and everyone! It really helped me realize the true meaning behind the phrase, "Not All Roses Bloom on the Same Day".
