And the advice for more traditional schooling was focused on setting realistic goals and balancing workload - all of the generic stuff you can find online. I was looking for something about how to find conferences to present at and attach yourself to research projects, get published, etc. Only but this if you really feel like you're starting with no idea of what you want from grad school or how to go about getting it.

Democracy and Social Ethics, by Jane Addams

About the Author In 1889, Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr co-founded Hull House in Chicago, Illinois, the first settlement house in the United States. The house was named after Charles Hull, who built the building in 1856. When starting out, all of the funding for the Hull House came from the $50,000 estate she inherited after her father died. Later, the Hull House was sponsored by Helen Culver, the wealthy real estate agent who had initially leased the house to the women. Jane and Ellen were the first two occupants of the house, which would later be the residence of about 25 women. At its height, Hull House was visited each week by around 2000 people. Its facilities included a night school for adults, kindergarten classes, clubs for older children, a public kitchen, an art gallery, a coffeehouse, a gymnasium, a girls club, bathhouse, a book bindery, a music school, a drama group, a library, and labor-related divisions. Her adult night school was a forerunner of the continuing education classes offered by many universities today. In addition to making available services and cultural opportunities for the largely immigrant population of the neighborhood, Hull House afforded an opportunity for young social workers to acquire training. Eventually, the Hull House became a 13-building settlement, which included a playground and a summer camp

Cohen Hull House founder and Nobel Peace Prize winner Jane Addams spent twenty years working with the poverty-stricken immigrant poor in Chicago. She writes here with understated passion and unqualified empathy for their plight.Anyone who wants to know why we have a fourty hour work should read this book. Addams writes about the desirablity of factory work over household work for young women, due both to the lack of isolation and the relatively short working hours, "only" from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., six days a week.Anyone who wants to know why we minimum wage laws, social security disability laws, age discrimination laws, social security laws, welfare laws, etc. should read this book. Addams writes about people earning pennies an hour, having their peak earning years in their twenties, being disabled in their thirties, and being dependent on children for financial support. The children, in turn had their education stop before high school so they can support their families.Anyone who wants to know why governments spend so much money on education should read this book. Addams writes about children having a choose limited to factory employment or household service, with the more intellectually oriented being doomed to spend a lifetime haunting public libraries and public lectures, but having virtually no chance of escaping the circumstance of their birth.Anyone who wants to know why poverty-stricken people are suspicious of political reform movements should read this book. Addams writes about the major efforts Chicago's political powerhouses made to help individual poverty-stricken people, and the irrelevance of wisdom advocating personal savings to people who could not pay for food for their family, or of wisdom urging them to stay out of taverns when they were a great source of personal help and friendship.One hundred and five years after Addams wrote this book, the United States is a far better place to live than it was then. But our country's improvements, urged by great progressive leaders like Addams, are under relentless right-wing assaults today. This book is extremely relevant to our country's future, if our future is going to continue to better than our past.The introduction of Charlene Haddock Seigfried, the past president of the Society for the Advancement of American philosophy, adds a great deal to this work, as it places Addams and her fellow reformers into the context of both their times and the prevailing systems of thought.Addams saw democracy as a way of life, and not just a series of electoral choices. Like fellow Pragmatists John Dewey, William James and George Herbert Mead, she maintained that democracy emerges from the People rather than being bestowed on Americans from government (whether benevolent or otherwise). As the founder of Chicago's Hull House, one of the most famous settlements in the US, she met people everyday that had diverse experiences and hopes for their lives. She tells their stories straightforwardly and in a way that allows the reader to clearly see how misinterpretation occurs with and between people. Addams advocates for doing good "with" people as opposed to doing good "for" people, for taking ethical action to ensure that all Americans have a voice in our ongoing democratic conversation.

By bln If you think of Jane Addams in terms of settlement houses and ending World War I (or trying to), settle down with this slender book to read her thoughts on "social ethics" and practical considerations that affect us today even in different situations than Addams was confronting. Excellent information and thought-provoking. Highly recommended for students of peace and justice studies and members of Women's International League for Peace and Freedom - Addams' ideas about social and economic status differences are eye-opening!

By John Fahey In today's competitive and social media filled world it is essential for a young person to set goals, priorities, and objectives. This practical book is filled with advice on what to do and what not to do. It's clearly a road map, a compendium, a manual that can guide young people from different cultural and language backgrounds. The author draws from personal experiences and that enhances the book. I particularly liked the concepts of time management, organisation, having a focus on activities that have a future benefit, recognizing that some activities are just fillers of time, providing little benefit. The concept of solitude for thought is introduced, how dreams can bring creative ideas, how sleep and punctuality, reading ahead for a lecture, can all bring order to studying. I liked the concept of learning knowledge as oceans, seas, rivers and tributaries. I advise the student reading this book to view it as a resource to return to frequently, to compare what he/she is actually doing to what the book advises should be done. It is a manual for success. It is a guide for students who want to go that extra mile.

In his continuing attempts to overtake Bug Island, General Komodo has, this time, employed both geckos and chameleons as his troops.Jack Patton is a clever author who knows how to appeal to young readers. Imbuing the bugs with human personalities, yet allowing them to remain “buggy” results in some humorous situations and conversations. However, I did not think there was as much clever humor in this book as in former offerings in the series. The battle scenes are exciting and suspenseful – young readers and listeners immerse themselves in the action on Bug Island.Patton also slips interesting, educational facts and observations into the text so subtly that they become part of the story and a reader learns something without knowing their knowledge is increasing. This book has the most natural history information of any of the four Battle Bug books. The vocabulary used in “Battle Bugs: The Chameleon Attack” is not simplistic and adds another educational facet to the story. Brett Bean’s numerous, detailed Illustrations increase this book’s appeal for younger readers and for youngsters to whom you may be reading.Each offering of the Battle Bugs books is better than the last and “Battle Bugs: The Chameleon Attack” is no exception. It is exciting and the story flows smoothly and logically. It is an interesting story and, for the target audience, the situations are suspenseful. My grandson loves the Battle Bugs series and has eagerly been asking when his copy of “Battle Bugs: The Chameleon Attack” will arrive and whether I have ordered the other two Battle Bugs books (I have.). I am sure he will find “The Chameleon Attack” an exciting addition to the Battle Bugs series and that I will be reading it to him more than once.

I love all the Battle Bugs books. They are easy to read and enticing. I think they are a great encouragement for reading once you get far enough into it to care about the characters. That initial getting into it may not be easy, but it would be worth it.

I read them to my 4 year old niece, and she did hear a few words that I had to define for her (e.g. "Reluctant"). The plot and characters were cute. I'd say the only thing that I would add would be more pictures every now and then. I like to use pictures as discussion points for the younger kiddos (at work and at home). Plus, the pictures that are in the book are adorable so it'd be nice to see more.I received this book at a discounted price for my honest opinion.

My son is currently under a year, however I enjoy reading to him. I enjoyed the imagination in the bedtime stories, especially "Little Star Friends" the wonderful trip little Charlie went on with his star friends and the fact they helped him on the trip was great. I also liked the connection in the awake world after his mother woke him up. I want to inspire my son to follow his dream and embrace his imagination these stories help him to do so. I cant wait to get the next book by Uncle Amon I see him being a favorite in our house hold

I have grandchildren ranging from 2 to 12 years of age. I was excited with the company when they allowed me to read their book,"Bedtimes Stories", for free, for an honest review. I had no problems with downloading this book on to my kindle. The story line kept my grandchildren up on my lap through the whole story. There was no wiggling to get down to watch tv or to play. Bedtime Stories encourages children to build on their dreams and teaches them to talk openly about them. Uncle Amos utilize his own experience and allows the children to feel them through his writing. This book, will remain in my kindle for farther reading. Children are only young for a short time, and nothing brings family together like reading a good book.

By ~Amy I love any excuse to to dive into a Gemma Brocato story, and being given an arc feels like Christmas! Playing with Fire took me back to Granite Pointe, a place I'm happy to revisit frequently. Once again, Gemma enthralled me with a tale of love, dramas, emotions galore! I loved the new characters, & the glances of old characters. I was tickled that Sam was included, he stole my heart - at first glance, in Cooking Up Love, the first book that introduces us to Granite Pointe. And Pippa & those twins are always a good addition. But, I loved Kit, Sarah was a delight, & Cris inched his way into a spot in my heart amongst my favorite book characters. Gemma never ceases to draw me in with suspense, give me something to think about with a bit of drama, and reach into my soul with all the emotions & the way she seems to always get you to feel what the characters are feeling. Playing With Fire was just what I'd expect from Gemma: a heartfelt romance filled with love, laughter, sprinkled with tears & a splash of anger, that seems to know how to reach into the very core of your being and make you fall in love.

But then Crispin Bayfield shows up at her school for a parent-teacher conference after his son “Trip” lands in trouble.Not only is Cris the town’s new super-sexy fire Marshal, but he’s an attentive father to his teenage son—even if Trip has some issues to overcome. As Sarah finds herself immersed more and more in those issues, she also finds herself spending more time with Cris, and second-guessing her dating rules.Playing with Fire is an engaging story rife with romance, sensual heat, and old-fashioned feel-good moments that will touch your heart and leave you with a warm glow long after the story ends. Ms. Brocato delivers another fabulous read and charming addition to a fantastic series!

I particularly enjoyed a fireman story that didn’t center on the woman’s fear of his dying. Not that that’s a bad thing, just nice to have a change now and then. Highly recommend.

Lewis, University of North Carolina at Charlotte Since the U.S. Civil Rights era, the racial composition of higher education has changed dramatically, resulting in an increase in the number of African American students and African American faculty in predominantly white institutions (PWI). Nevertheless, the number of African American endowed or distinguished professors remains small. Because it is difficult for African American faculty to attain these prized positions, those who have done so possess invaluable knowledge that may be beneficial to others. Reaching the Mountaintop of the Academy: Personal Narratives, Advice and Strategies from Black Distinguished and Endowed Professors, fills an important niche in the canon of higher education literature. In the autobiographical chapters that follow, numerous distinguished and endowed professors (1) describe their personal journey to the distinguished or endowed professorship; (2) explain important life lessons that they learned during their journey; (3) describe their current professional goals; and (4) offer suggestions and recommendations for graduate students, untenured faculty, tenured faculty, and college/university administrators. At a time when many predominantly white higher education institutions continue to have difficulty attracting and retaining African American faculty, and African American faculty continue to struggle for full inclusion in the academy, this book is timely and needed.

I'm always looking for a bargain and Amazon has a lot of great bargains in long-out-of-print books. From School Library Journal Gr 1–3—The sage giant panda, Stillwater, returns to bestow knowledge through storytelling, this time while occasionally donning a pair of red-and-white striped socks. As Muth explains in the author's note, Zen Socks was inspired "by all of the unexpected way I have benefitted from those who have 'socked it to me.'" Readers meet Leo and Molly, siblings who have moved into a new neighborhood and are delighted to discover that the unusual panda ("'What's his name again?' asked Leo. 'Mister…Quietpuddle?'") is their neighbor. When Molly expresses the desire to be a famous ballerina with her name on glittery posters, Stillwater tells "The Taste of Banzo's Sword," a humorous tale adapted from Paul Reps's Zen Flesh, Zen Bones (Tuttle, 1957), which emphasizes the importance of patience. Later, Leo and Stillwater muse about the nature of "bad guys" and selfishness. Finally, the trio heads to the beach where they find starfish stranded on the shore. Though there are too many starfish and it seems nearly impossible to help, the siblings rally, coming to understand that even very small acts of kindness make a difference. Muth once again employs dual styles: sumi ink–style black-and-white drawings for the Banzo's Sword story, and loose, light-filled watercolors for the scenes with Stillwater and the children. The compositions create a tranquil atmosphere and an appropriately Zenlike airiness, allowing young readers to focus on the character's interactions and observations. There are certainly lessons here, but they are imparted with gentle grace and respect for a child's developing sensibilities. His stories are well written and remind us about what is really important. This book is no exception. It is beautifully illustrated and full of life lessons about being present, generosity, and compassion. Muth uses a giant panda named Stillwater to tell ancient Buddhist tales to the neighborhood kids. Stillwater's story telling, combined with the calm watercolor images bring the fables to life, and make them relatable to the youngest of children. Pick this one up today. You won't be disappointed.

The panda's (Stillwater) wisdom and the adventures he shares with the characters in the story is imaginative and warm. We could all learn to be a little more like Stillwater.

Socks is a Delight By milkweed beetle If you love Muth's muted, fine-edged water-color paintings, Stillwater, and the quiet,eastern-inspired lessons the panda hero instills, you won't be disappointed in Zen socks. In thisbook, the author brings a more explicit environmental theme into several of Stillwater's teachings andinspires his new young human friends to engage in saving species that live far from theirneighborhood street.

Way to understanding self-happiness and love By Amazon Jeanette Sylvia Salow takes you on a beautiful journey of a young woman's self-transformation and self-realization to finding what's happiness in one's every day living and purpose. This is a journey that speaks to all souls (young and old) who are seeking to understand oneself better, whether it's finding purpose in life, understanding love for oneself and others, work and career, or simply realizing the gifts we all have within oneself. I found it very useful to read about the author’s challenges, aha moments, realizations, and what she learned. The spiritual novel is a great way how to read about spiritual topics in an interesting and easier way. The lessons learnt with the Chinese monk makes you think and there are great tips and specific guidelines on how to use the same spiritual techniques that the author has used herself. I’ve tried some of them and they work greatly for me, especially about managing own energies, and getting back energy that I have invested wrongly.

I already love stories about finding meaning and purpose in life. This book follows the story of a young Czech girl who deals with huge trials and struggles in her life. Not many of us could hit bottom like she did without giving up. The part I like best about this story is that it is based upon real life experiences of Sylvia Salow herself. The pressure of modern day societies with expectations regarding home, job, and relationships can be too much for most people. However, through her journey of self-exploration she finds hope and peace. This book digs deep in order to reveal what matters most!

I am glad that I was able to purchase this book because it was actually one of the few Kindle books I've had here on Amazon that I really enjoyed.Maggie and Lionel were two opposite individuals but were placed in a fun and whirlwind romance in Malibu. I especially loved the first few chapters because Maggie was still enveloping her emotions and feelings towards herself and Lionel.I know that a lot of women can surely relate to her.Ultimately, this was a fun read; sexy, sensual and romantic.

Review of Goodspeed's History of Chicago By Ryan Mease This is a personal history of the University's founding by Rockefeller and various other benefactors. Admittedly, Goodspeed is often key on sharing exact sums of money, which doesn't make for the most interesting read. However, one does learn many little tidbits about the early era of the University, and, for this, the history is worth the read.
