The 5th Anniversary Edition of Generation iY is one book every parent, educator, coach, and youth worker should hear. Over 100,000 adults have benefitted from Tim Elmore's insights in the first edition of this landmark book, which has now been updated and expanded to include new research, stories, practical solutions, and two bonus chapters to help adults connect with today's teens and young adults. It is no longer accurate to refer to Generation Y as one collective demographic.

The Millennials born after 1990 are a whole new batch of students. We call them Generation iY because their life is dominated by the iPhone, the iPod, iTunes, etc. They've been identified as the Digital Generation, Mosaics, Techies, Millennials, and Screenagers. They are the talk of Human Resource professionals and newspaper journalists, they are the prize of their parents, and they are the market share every retailer covets. They are the kids born between 1990 and 2002 and are part of the largest generation in our history. The older you are, the more you'll feel like an immigrant among natives with this new generation. They've shifted from our Gutenberg era into their own Google era. Their bias is for action and interaction. We have the privilege of shaping their future.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. the more you'll feel like an immigrant among natives with this new generation By Joseph C. Gunter Purpose, Main Argument, and Overall Summary; In the book author Tim Elmore introduces us to generation iY. It is no longer accurate to refer to Generation Y as one collective demographic. The Millennials born after 1990 are a whole new batch of students. We call them Generation iY because their life is dominated by the iPhone, the iPod, iTunes, etc. They've been identified as the Digital Generation, Mosaics, Techies, Millennials and Screenagers. Their bias is for action and interaction. We have the privilege of shaping their future. The author seeks to unveil the new data on these young people and enable you to interpret that data so the reader can lead them wisely. The author gives practical steps the reader can take as they invest in the students around them. It matters not whether you are a parent, an educator, a coach, a youth worker, or an employer; adults must wake up to today’s new reality and lead tomorrow’s adults to become the best version of themselves. We must be up for the challenge of leading as they enter adulthood.Personal Reflections, Ministerial Considerations, and Questions for Class Consideration; As for personal reflections, this book is a great resource for data to understand why generation iY is so different from other generations, even generation Y. Not only does it give the data, but it also gives us both the good and the bad of news of the results. Showing us that it is not completely hopeless and that this generation has a lot of potential as well.As a student minister it was really helpful to see that the average attention span of a generation iY student is 6-8 seconds. It was especially helpful to see that the reason for this is because of the huge amount of information that comes at them everyday. Therefore, I have 6-8 seconds to answer the question, why should I keep on listening? It is also insightful to keep it focused on the main-point of the message, because information overload is one of the reasons that already causes them to checkout.Significant QuotationsThese students have far too much confidence and far too little experience to be left to their own devices. (Kindle Locations 244-245).Generation Y is the largest population in earth’s history, and iY kids are the largest portion of that generation. (Kindle Locations 254-255).The train wreck may also take the form of miserable relationship skills and low emotional intelligence. Because so much of their life is connected by technology, young people can fail to develop face-to-face people skills. Texting, for instance, just doesn’t prepare them to interact in real relationship dilemmas. Durable and lasting relationships cannot be reduced to a few words on a screen. And trying to resolve a conflict or “breaking up” on a screen is a lazy person’s solution. In my opinion, screens are for information— not emotion. (Kindle Locations 310-314)Technology without maturity can be hazardous. They believe since they have mastered the virtual world, they have mastered the real world— creating artificial maturity. (Kindle Locations 332-333)those who lead multiple generations quickly learn that attention spans are shorter and communication must be more engaging. Kids today have attention spans that lie somewhere between 6-8 seconds. I believe the issue is not a six-second attention span. The issue is that kids have well-developed filters because they digest so much information on any given day. Over 1,000 messages daily. Their brains are quicker than mine was at their age, as they’ve been conditioned to process more information, more rapidly. (Kindle Locations 377-381)When things come quick and easy, I fail to develop the emotional muscles I need— muscles that require intentional exercises to fully mature. (Kindle Locations 460-461).As a group, Generation iY is overwhelmed, overconnected, overprotected, and overserved. That’s not the whole picture of course. Generation iY can also be energetic, confident, resourceful, creative, and capable. They dream big, they care about their friends, they thrive on activity. They do not accept the way things are done just because that is the way it has always been done. I can honestly say that some of my most meaningful relationships are with iYers! But I also believe it’s time for a wake-up call when it comes to Generation iY. It’s time that those of us who care about these kids— parents, teachers, coaches, youth workers, employers— pay attention to the way we’re shaping them. (Kindle Locations 479-484)

Burton This is a MUST for anyone who is dealing with the next generation of students. I have been a Tim Elmore fan for a few years now and read the previous of this book and his Habitudes books. I believe that the Habitudes should be implemented in all our schools in the United States. This book was a very easy read and provided excellent examples in ways to reach and connect with this generation. Again, this book will help provide practical and meaningful ways to work with this next generation.

Good, bad, ugly and illuminating—everyone has an opinion on race.As biracial people continue trending, the discussion is no longer about a singular topic, but is more like playing a game of multi-level chess. And the co-authors of this anthology, like many, have a lot to say on this subject.

So much so they decided to write a book about what it means to be biracial or multiracial in 2015 (and beyond). The project grew rapidly over and above anything they could ever have anticipated, and now their stories are joined by twenty-two others—each examining their common bond.

The anthology, Being Biracial: Where Our Secret Worlds Collide, is a non-fiction book that cites the experiences of both mixed-race authors and those in interracial partnerships of all ages and backgrounds, from all over the world. It blends positivity, negativity, humor, pathos and realism in an enlightening exploration of what it means to be more than one ethnicity.

Everyone would benefit from reading it, whether you identify as biracial, multiracial, black, white or anything in between. Conversations about race can be uncomfortable, but this book leaves you with no excuse whatsoever to not participate.Speaking as a white person, this book has been extremely eye-opening and has let me see a world I would otherwise know nothing about. The first essay by Sarah Ratliff was like a punch in the gut. I cried! There's enough drama in her parents' story to make a Lifetime movie. The contributors are from every corner of the world and have unique but binding experiences to share. Their essays are honest and eloquent and raw. "Being Biracial" actually leaves me wanting to read more, so I look forward to a Volume 2!

By Dr. Reed Sarah and Bryony have done a marvelous job of telling 'a' story that plays out in the real world more than most people are aware of. Being of biracial and bicultural descent myself, I found the stories in 'Being Biracial' very relevant, timely and in great need for every single person on this planet to read. It is not easy to navigate through two or more worlds (depending on the racial make-up of a person), and often times very frustrating for the simple fact that people of biracial descent are often criticized by many and accepted by few. Very honest and at times painful, the stories are a true reflection (supported by my own research) of what is obvious but not talked about in our society. The fact that biracial individuals make up one the fastest growing population in the United States, makes this book so important. However, please note that the stories in this book do not only reflect what's happening in America but across the entire planet. Many thanks and much love to the wonderful authors Sarah and Bryony

An important contribution to the conversation By Alec MacLeod Just a generation ago, societies where the “one drop rule” once prevailed (such as the US) the notion of someone claiming the status of “biracial” was improbable, especially for those who had one white parent and one parent of color. Being Biracial appropriately sheds those restrictions and explores identities beyond the outdated trope of the “tragic mulatto. “ At the same time, many of the stories in this volume will remind the reader that race often continues to be treated as an either-or category. While we may no longer see it as a tragedy to not “fit” in rigidly racialized groupings, the essays provide important insights into the wide range of challenges that remain. That makes this a must read for the family members and friends of those who identify as biracial, especially those readers who come from a dominant racial category. The selections are multigenerational and international, providing a broad view of the topic. At the same time, readers should be aware that the majority of the contributors are well educated and bring a distinctly cosmopolitan perspective to their reflections.

The Spanish Conjugations Made Fun series is NOT for beginners. Even though plenty of explanations and examples are given where appropriate, some basic grammar knowledge of Spanish is necessary to gain the benefits of what this series has to offer. It is designed for students who know the very basics of the Spanish language but are not able to practice conversing with a native Spanish speaker. This "Made Fun" series will assist you to speak authentic Spanish with the help of the accompanying mp3 files, which are available for purchase on the LearningSpanishMadeFun website.

With the Spanish Conjugations Made Fun series, you will be able to practice extensively without the need for a partner to converse with. You will engage in special drill exercises, using different verbs in different phrases, to help the tenses you are practicing to be cemented in your mind. It will also enable you to immerse yourself in everyday Latin American Spanish at your own pace, in your own time, wherever you are – even in the comfort of your own home.

The nearly 1500 carefully selected phrases presented in Volume 1 explore many loosely categorized popular, useful themes that, due to the subject matter, often overlap, thereby enabling a greater learning experience through the power of repetition.

Volume 1 covers the more basic tenses: the present tense, the simple past, the imperfect past, the imperatives, and a few subjunctive basics related to commands and some popular topics. This volume also examines the future tense using the verb "ir," the use of "ser" and "estar," and active and passive voice.

Spanish Conjugations Made Fun encourages you to explore Spanish far beyond the material offered by the traditional tourist phrasebooks, as it primarily focuses on the use of verbs. In contrast to English, the Spanish language has a much more extensive verb conjugation. This difference is known to present challenges for most Spanish-language students whose aim it is to speak the language well. This series is geared toward the serious student who wants to learn to speak the language fluently, as opposed to the "holiday traveler", who just wants to know what the exchange rate is, how to order a beer, and where to find a restroom.

While some regional differences in verb use and word choice are common among different Spanish-speaking countries, this series mainly draws upon Guatemalan and Mexican influences. However, these differences are not significant enough to influence your effective communication in any Spanish-speaking country. It must also be noted that the translations of the phrases in this "Made Fun" series are at times not literal; even though they may be grammatically correct, exact translations often sound awkward and do not reflect authentic Latin American Spanish.

You can feel confident to know that this series offers only the most commonly used, everyday Spanish phrases. It will help you speak authentic Spanish, the way it is spoken by Latin Americans in actual conversations.

By Amazon Customer Even though I have not finished Volume 3 yet, after having practiced with the previous volumes, I am realizing how much my Spanish has improved. I really like this learning method. It is playful and fun, and not “dry” in any way, yet it has many explanations and examples. Another thing I like is that, (even though this may not work for everybody), you don’t necessarily need to start at the beginning: you can open up any of the volumes anywhere and start practicing. I feel that after completion of Volume 3 I will be well on my way to being able to communicate with much greater ease. My husband and I plan to retire in Mexico and when my husband heard me praising this series he started reading this series as well. This worked out great because now we practice together. My husband also thought the books were well thought out and offered something no other books had ever offered......a complete explanation of how to learn Spanish conjugations presented in a fun and intelligent way!

I knew the basics of Spanish grammar but have found the use of verbs very complicated in the past. This series looked as if it would be able to help me... I am glad that I gave it a try! There are MANY drills and many useful topics. Also, the fact that it was edited by a Latina is in my opinion to its credit. The digital downloads are obviously not recorded in a studio but were very helpful as well! All together a very helpful learning tool!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Another great book By Amazon Customer Volume 2:What the author promised she delivered once more. A great 2nd volume and a fun way to learn what otherwise would have been a boring task! Learning grammar has never been my favorite. This series gives me exactly what I needed: a great foundation! Thanks to the authors homework I definitely feel that my Spanish is improving!

'Happy anniversary!'Nabil bin Rashid Al Sharifa, Sheikh of Rhastaan, raised the glass in his hand high in a gesture of congratulation and angled it in the direction of the two honoured guests at the party. The couple who were celebrating today and who, in spite of everything in the past, were now his two greatest friends.'Congratulations on ten years together. Ten happy years.'It was the last three words that caught in his throat and almost closed it off, choking them back from his tongue. Ten happy years they had been for his friends, but if he was given the chance there was no way he would want to live through the past decade over again.'To Clemmie and Karim,' he tried again. The elegant dark-haired woman, regal as the Queen she truly was in the scarlet robe, heavily embroidered in gold, turned a warm, generous smile in his direction while at her side, Sheikh Karim al Khalifa, like Nabil more sombrely but equally magnificently attired in the flowing robes and headdress of his country, lifted his own glass in acknowledgement of Nabil's toast. It was a moment that no one could ever have anticipated happening ten years before, when Clemmie had been destined to be Nabil's arranged wife, but his headstrong passion for the younger Sharmila had led him to reject her and marry his new, pregnant lover. No one then would have predicted that this huge party would be organised in the Rhastaanian palace to celebrate their ten years of love and marriage… Of children.Abruptly Nabil put his glass down on the nearest table, the fine crystal clattering harshly against the polished surface. Even if he hadn't already been told the happy news, it was impossible not to notice the slight swell of Clemmie's belly under the burnished red silk of the floor-length gown. Clementina had always been beautiful. Even when he had been in the throes of the foolishly righteous—or so he had believed—anger and mutiny that had driven him to reject her, he'd had to acknowledge that. But now, with her curvaceous form enriched by her early pregnancy, she had a glow about her that was positively incandescent.'Congratulations,' Nabil repeated once more, forcing himself to smile at his friends. He wanted to smile to show that he was happy for them. He was happy for them, deep down in his heart. But at the same time he couldn't help contrasting the richness of their life when compared with his own. What they had in abundance, and what he needed so badly now, but he didn't see a way of discovering the same happiness for himself.Ten years ago, when they had been starting out on their journey into married happiness, he had thought he had it all. A beautiful wife at his side, a child growing inside her, the future of his country secured against the swirling darkness of uprising that had threatened. Young fool that he'd been—young, blind, heedless, headstrong fool!—he'd thought only of his longing to rebel against the hand that fate had dealt him.So he'd rebelled all right, and by doing so he'd tied himself into that fate even tighter. He'd locked himself in and thrown away the key.'Ten wonderful years!'Karim's voice might have been lifted, projected to reach the whole room and the audience of his guests and peers who thronged the huge space, but his eyes were only on his wife. They were in their own private world and unconsciously Clemmie's hand reached up to rest gently on the barely visible swell, the promise of their unborn child in her belly. The moment seemed to hang on the air, thick with emotion and a touch of secret sensuality, until it was broken by a flurry of sound and a whirl of movement as two small bodies careered across the room and flung themselves at their parents with shrieks of delight.'Adnan, Sahra…' Clemmie's voice was soft and warm even as she tried to make her words into the gentlest of reproofs. 'Is that any way for a prince and princess to behave at such a public event?''But it's Mummy and Daddy's party,' Adnan declared with all the confidence of his just five years of age. 'Not a pub-publicked 'vent!'Another smile passed between Clemmie and Karim at their son's declaration, and the boy's father let his hand drop to ruffle the mop of shining black hair with easy affection. It was the sort of warmth that Nabil had never known with his own father, a coldly distant man who barely knew his son's name.'It's both,' Karim said quietly and something in that tone made Nabil move sharply and abruptly, half-turning towards the door and then forcing himself back again. As host for this event, it was his place to stay where he was, to ensure that the celebrations went perfectly, but right now. Go on…The words weren't actually spoken but he could almost hear them on the air. It was just a flicker of a response that drew his attention to Clemmie's fine-boned face, but as soon as she had caught his eye, she made the tiniest of gestures with her dark head, indicating the doors out on to the terrace. The complete understanding of what was in his thoughts was there in the warmth of her smile, the flicker of her eyes towards the open doors that spelled escape and freedom from the public ceremony. She had recognised his response, knew the thoughts that were in his head—and was happy to let him take the time to breathe that he needed.'Now—weren't you going to sing that special song?'Her question drew everyone's attention to the two children and Clemmie, focusing on her and away from Nabil. With a silent whisper of thanks to the woman who his father had once decreed should be his bride but instead, with her true husband, had become one of his dearest friends, Nabil took the opportunity that presented itself and moved, silent and soft-footed, across the marble floor and out on to the balcony. The coolness of a faint breeze stirred the robes he wore, making them swirl softly as he moved, and the blackness of the night was eased by the cold glow of the moon just coming up over the horizon. Roughly Nabil dragged in long, much-needed breaths of air as he paced down the long stone-flagged gallery before coming to a halt and, resting his hands on the high parapet, stared out at the lights that burned in the darkness beyond the walls of the palace. To where the people his country had completed their daily business, and now went about the procedure of settling for the night, getting their children ready for bed, kissing them goodnight. 'Damnation!'His hand formed into a fist, pounding down against the roughness of the stone as he faced the images in his mind. It seemed that today everything around him conspired to drive home to him how much he should have. How much he had once thought he had only to have it all snatched away. In a gesture that was so much of a habit he barely noticed these days, he lifted a hand to rub at the side of his face where a scar marked his cheekbone, not really concealed by the thick black beard he had grown in an attempt to disguise it. Not that it had worked. The white line that scored through his skin was still there like the mark of Cain every time he looked in the mirror; reminding him.A sudden sound, soft and slow in the darkness, reminded him of just where he was, the open expanse of the palace grounds between him and the walls that surrounded them. Unwanted and unwelcome, the memories came creeping back, pushing him to take a single step backwards, away from the edge, into the shadows. Tonight it seemed that the darkness hid potential for danger, for destruction.Or was that just his own state of mind?At his left hand side, the sound came again, soft and light, bringing his head round so fast it made his thoughts spin. Who?'Highness.'The voice was low, quiet, but with an edge of apprehension marking it as he glared into the darkness. It was also obviously female, something that should have made his tension ease, relaxing his shoulders. But there was something about the sound of her voice that tugged at memories he had thought long buried, dragging them to the surface of his mind when he had no wish to revisit them. Memories that had taught him that no one, man or woman, was truly to be trusted.'Who's there? Show yourself.'A rustle of fabric sweeping the stone flags, the whisper of soft shoes on the hard ground and she stepped forward, into the moonlight. Small and slender, pale face, dark hair, an embroidered wrap swathing her body and up and over her head, covering her almost completely. For a second it seemed that his heart juddered in his chest, his breath catching, so that the attempt at words escaped him almost without thought.'Sharmila?'He didn't believe in ghosts—and yet something spoke to him.'Your pardon, Sheikh.'Her hands, steepled together, came out to touch her forehead as she lowered her head in a salute of respect and submission. The gesture made him catch two things. First there was the wave of perfume, sandalwood and flowers, rich and sensual. It swirled around him like scented mist, putting his senses on alert, but this time in a new and very different way. He inhaled deeply, felt the aroma work its way through him like some rich wine so that he had to blink hard to clear his vision. That was when he noticed the second thing—that the left hand she had lifted to her forehead had a—not a deformity—a tiny twist to the little finger that made it sit not quite straight against her hand. From somewhere deep a memory stirred in his mind, surfaced and was then gone again. Had he seen her before—and if so when? But the woman—a young woman—was speaking again, her words bringing his attention back to the present.'Forgive me, Your Highness. I didn't know that anyone else was out here. I thought no one would notice me.'Aziza's voice trembled in her own ears. She should have known that she could be caught out here, like this, away from the celebrations in the main hall. She also knew that Sheikh Nabil was a hard, demanding man, totally focused on security within his palace. Who could blame him after what had happened? But the noise and the heat of the anniversary party had all been rather too much for her. That and watching her older sister Jamalia flirt outrageously—or as outrageously as she dared in front of their parents—with every eligible young man who was present. She had had to get away from the party, away from playing second fiddle to Jamalia. Away from her father's constant scrutiny of his second daughter, the one who might as well be a servant because of the way he expected her to keep in the background. She was supposed to stay there and act as chaperone. Of course Jamalia didn't want her there; and to tell the truth Aziza had wanted to be anywhere but with her sister. She hadn't even wanted to come to this party in the first place. But her father had insisted. Everyone who was anyone would be at the celebration, and their absence would most definitely be noticed if they weren't.'Not mine,' Aziza had muttered under her breath but her mother's glare in her direction had made her think more than twice about saying the words aloud. So she had swallowed down her protest, had dressed herself in the deep pink silk gown that had been provided and had followed in her parents' footsteps into the golden palace for the evening.Jamalia of course had thought that her reluctance was only because her sister didn't want to act as chaperone. That and the fact that Aziza was always ill at ease with the young men who flocked to her side. But there was more to it than that. And now the real reason why she had been so unwilling to come tonight was standing right before her, tall and powerful, the scent of his skin swirling round her, his dark head blotting out the light of the moon so that she was totally in his shadow. It was a place she was used to, she acknowledged privately. She had always been in Nabil's shadow, always trailing after him from the moment when, as a lordly twelve-year-old on a visit to her parents' home, he had flung himself from the saddle of a horse that had seemed skyscraper high to her diminutive five-year-old status and tossed the reins in the direction of a groom.'Who are you?'The question, hard and sharp, was exactly the same one that Nabil had demanded of her all those years before so that for the moment she didn't recognise the fact that it had come from Nabil and not from her memories. It was only when she saw his mouth clamp tight together in the darkness of the rich beard he now sported that she realised he had asked her now and not then.'Just a maid.'She looked the part well enough, she reflected. The pink gown wasn't new, of course, but one handed down from Jamalia. 'It will do for Zia,' her father had said. Because Aziza wasn't the one being paraded in front of the Sheikh in the hope of an advantageous marriage, as her sister was.'I—I am with Jamalia, sire.'Instinct made her spread her skirts, sweeping into a low and careful curtsey. She hoped that the obeisance she showed him might ease the tension she could feel coming in waves from the tall, powerful man before her. Her mother had worried that she would stumble into some awkward situation if she went off on her own, and right now it seemed that Naddiya had been right. But the truth was that this situation was not of the politicking and plotting that her parents were obsessed with and much more on a personal level.'Your name?''Zia, sire.'Some instinct made her give the nickname everyone in her family used. At least that way he might not associate her directly with her parents and their political manoeuvrings. It was impossible to avoid the sting of wry reflection at the thought of just why her given name had been shortened to this form.'Aziza, hmm?' her father had said. 'A name that means "the beautiful one" for someone so small and plain? I think not. Let's face it, our second daughter could never be the beautiful one when compared with her sister.' He had shortened her name to Zia and it had stuck.'I needed some air. I ask your pardon.'An impatient, dismissive wave of his hand flicked away her explanation, making her break off in confusion. Had he forgiven her for being here—hiding, as he would see it, in the darkness? She'd taken a real risk, knowing how tight the security still was in the place. So she would only have herself to blame if this all turned nasty.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Good storytelling... By N. Shiv Steamy, intense and engrossing… Kate Walker delivers a drama packed story in her latest book Destined for the Desert King. The story is captivating so much it would have you turning the pages in need to know what will happen next between the characters. You'd be surprised how quickly you reach the end. Sheikh Nabil is the king of Rhastaan and so he needs a queen. Years ago, when he was just a boy, he lost his wife, Sharmila, to a bullet meant for him. Ever since then he has become a changed man. It is during a function held at the palace that his life would change forever. On the palace balcony he meets a woman, Zia. She introduces herself as a maid. But the way Zia makes his body awaken under her quiet gaze, her soft lips…Nabil swoops down and claims Zia's mouth. The powerful reaction he experiences makes him want her but he is swift to walk away so sure he would never have to cross the maid's path ever again. But the shock of his life comes when Nabil chooses a queen. On his wedding night when he removes the veil from his new wife, his outburst is funny… (You'll have to find out for yourself)Aziza has always been the spare wheel, the other daughter, the ugly one… She was more of a burden to her parents than a daughter. In her parents' eyes, her father especially, she could never reach the standards of her beautiful sister Jamalia. This makes her hold herself in low-esteem. It is during chaperoning her sister at an event held by Sheikh Nabil that Aziza crosses path with the dark, imposing king…someone she once knew as a boy. The little boy has grown up to become dark and irresistible… Aziza introduces herself to Nabil as Jamalia's maid. But seeing her childhood crush as a grown man awakens her body in a way it has never been awakened before. And when Nabil kisses her on the dark palace balcony the physical intensity has been instantaneous! Now you might think the story has been predictable so far, but what happens from here on is unpredictable. Ms. Walker shocked me good and well with Nabil's story. But I am disappointed there was no epilogue to tie up two unanswered questions at the end. You'll need to read the book to know what I am talking about. But overall the story captures your attention. You'll be hooked even though there were minor flaws in the storyline.Recommended4 Stars

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. . Kate Walker does excellent writing and I was drawn to read and keep reading the book. Enjoy!!! By Cheryl A. Steckling Destined for the Desert Kings by Kate WalkerNabil bin Rashid Al Sharifa Sheikh of Rhastaan raised a glass in celebration for his friends 10th anniversary. Ten years together and ten happy years for Clemmie and Karim. He had a hard time saying it as ten years ago Clemmie had been destined to be Nabil arranged bride but he was head strong in wanting Sharmila instead. Clemmie and Karim already had 2 children by now and the third one on the way.Nabil and Sharmila had gotten married, she being pregnant at that time and their marriage did not last long as Sharmila was killed by what was to have been meant for Nabil. The baby died also.Of the guests at the party was Jamalia and her sister Aziza and their parents. Jamalia’s father was hopeful that Nabil and Jamalia would get married. Aziza met Nabil on the balcony but introduced herself as Zia. She was always 2nd best. So she left Nabil believe she was Jamalia maid. She was to be Jamalia’s chaperone anyway at this party but Jamalia did not want that.Nabil thought there was something familiar about Zia and he could not quite figure out what it was. Shortly thereafter Nabil was to take a bride himself. He was presented with many young females and as it was custom they had to be in a room with a two way mirror and Nabil could observe them one at a time that way. Jamalia had along of course Zia as her chaperone again.Nabil had really been taken by Zia on the balcony and again now as he watched her with Jamalia. However he could not marry a maid.Nabil rejected all the young girls but asked for Jamalia’s sister to be his bride. Nabil had been introduced to them when they were all young children and bits and pieces of the memories of how Aziza was kept coming back to him.The story tells of their wedding, the honeymoon and the time later. Kate Walker does excellent writing and I was drawn to read and keep reading the book. The story line just would not let me put it down. Enjoy the book and happy reading.

Centering on an unlikely romance between a young sales clerk and a lonely housewife, this lesbian cult classic is an engrossing tale of passion and self-discovery. Therese, a young sales clerk, and Carol, a housewife in the throes of a bitter divorce, meet by chance, but their instant connection is no accident. Fleeing the oppressive routines of their daily lives, they pursue their blossoming romance down the open highway in search of freedom and bliss. But their honeymoon is cut short when Carol is faced with the painful choice between caring for her child and being with her new love.

Best known for her psychological thrillers, Strangers on a Train and The Talented Mr. Ripley, Patricia Highsmith published The Price of Salt under a pseudonym to avoid suffering from 1952's disparaging view of homosexuality. But Highsmith's complex and insightful treatment of lesbian characters continues to defy stereotypes about the LGBT community. A landmark in the history of American feminist and lesbian literature, The Price of Salt is a sensual, articulate, and engaging treatise on the importance of being true to one's self.

I used to drive an ice cream truck in Long Beach CA and would stop by the pier at a used book store to search the racks of pulp fiction for anything that had a modicum of same sex content.21 years old, knowing that I wanted to meet others of my kind, and the only literature I knew was Well of Lonliness, prison studies and pulp that either had the butch lesbian dying tragically or reformming into a femme.Among the bunch of poorly writen pulp I bought, was a gem written by Claire Morgan. No one dies and they end with the possibility of a long term relationship. It was the first sense of hope that I had as a young lesbian in the sixties. It saved my life.To anyone who is interested in GLB studies, this is a must read as it is a the first historical book with a positive ending.

By A Customer I was introduced to Therese and Carol, the two protaganists in Highsmith's lesbian romance The Price of Salt, my Sophomore year of college in a Gay and Lesbian Lit. Class. The professor told the class she had picked the book becuase it was well written and it presented an interesting twist to a gay love story, no one dies or goes straight at the end(imagine that). This alone is not neccesarily compelling enough to get someone to read Salt, after all, today's gay and lesbian love stories often end in positive and fulfilled ways. But for Highsmith's Salt, written in the 1950s, this was a stretch. The reader will enjoy the subtleness of the prose and the indepth look at the confusion and chaos that can occur when two women come together and realize their mutual attraction and then love for each other. In addition, the novel is a dynamic look at 1950s America as the characters adventure out of New York and off into the Great American Wide Open. I encourage gay and straight readers to venture forth with Therese and Carol. Salt allows a beautiful look into the world of finding one's soul mate and falling in love. Becuase, above all, Highsmith has written a love story, not just a lesbian work of fiction.

Heartbreakingly beautiful By Julie Cao I had never read a single same sex romantic novel before; however, the trailer for the movie version of this book was absolutely beautiful and interesting so I decided to give this book a try (since the movie hadn't come out at the time). I finished the book in one day. I just couldn't put the book down, it was simply too mesmerizing! I wasn't against homosexuality before but I wasn't interested in actively fighting for its rights either. After this book, I finally, truly understand the most universal concept of all: love is love. Love is powerful and beautiful and it should not be a crime to fall in love. Who are we to decide if love between a woman and another woman is as natural as between a man and a woman? In the end, love conquers all. This book exceeded all of my expectations and more. Patricia Highsmith, thank you for such a wonderful read!

Excerpt from Irish ImpressionsWhen I had for the first time crossed St George's Channel, and for the first time stepped out of a Dublin hotel on to St Stephen's Green, the first of all my impressions was that of a particular statue, or rather portion of a statue. I left many traditional mysteries already in my track, but they did not trouble me as did this random glimpse or vision. I have never understood why the Channel is called St George's Channel; it would seem more natural to call it St Patrick's Channel since the great missionary did almost certainly cross that unquiet sea and look up at those mysterious mountains.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Review "[T]his . . . is a gift to all interested in Ireland’s history or in the writing of G. K. Chesterton." -- Kathleen Galvas, Southern Renaissance, July 1, 2003

About the Author Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London, England, in 1874. He went on to study art at the Slade School, and literature at University College in London. Chesterton wrote a great deal of poetry, as well as works of social and literary criticism. Among his most notable books are "The Man Who Was Thursday", a metaphysical thriller, and "The Everlasting Man", a history of humankind's spiritual progress. After Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922, he wrote mainly on religious topics such as "Orthodoxy" and "Heretics". Chesterton is most known for creating the famous priest-detective character Father Brown, who first appeared in "The Innocence of Father Brown". Chesterton died in 1936 at the age of 62.

Chesterton toured Ireland in 1918, a pivotal time in Irish history, to recruit volunteers for the English cause in World War One. While Chesterton was not much of a recruiter, he did produce this fun romp through Irish culture and history which presents a stark contrast between England and Ireland. This being Chesterton, there are great jokes, odd rants and haunting phrases. This book is a fine example of Chesterton at his best as he explores Irish politics, culture and religion. Fans of Chesterton and readers looking to understand more about Irish culture will enjoy the work. The IHS version has some excellent features. Dermot Quinn offered an excellent introduction and there are some very good notes at the end of the book. The photos included in the work seem a little blurred but they do not take away from the work as a whole.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ENGLAND AND IRELAND; WHY DOES IT SEEM THEY ARE ALWAYS FIGHTING? THIS BOOK IS THE RESULT. G.K. NOT ONLY SHOWS US THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES, HE ALSO, SADLY, POINTS OUT WHERE AND WHY THEY MISUNDERSTAND EACH OTHER. ALTHOUGH A LOT OF WATER HAS PASSED UNDER THE BRIDGE SINCE THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN, THERE ARE HERE FUNDAMENTAL INSIGHTS INTO THE PROBLEMS CREATED BY ENGLAND RULING IRELAND. TODAY, EVEN THOUGH MOST OF IRELAND IS HAS IT'S OWN GOVERNMENT, EXCEPT IN THE NORTH, WHICH IS RULED OVER BY ENGLAND, OF COURSE THROUGH A LOCAL PARLIAMENT, IRELAND IS STILL ECONOMICALLY RULED BY ENGLAND. THIS BOOK IS AN EXCELLENT BEGINNING TOWARDS UNDERSTANDING WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON. RQ

I'm looking forward to it because Ireland and Chesterton are two of my favorite things. But do NOT buy this as a Kindle book. The transfer to eBook is well below standard. The page comes up sideways showing only half a page at a time. And if you turn the device, the page turns away from you. I'm not sure I can even read this thing.

Excerpt from The Life and Genius of ShakespeareWe believe that we need make no apology for the publication of this volume. We cannot, indeed, help fearing that Shakespearian criticism, in some, at least, of its forms, has already become an overgrown excrescence. But the very rapidity with which works succeed one another in illustration of the personal and literary history of the poet, shows that the curiosity which it excites is still unexhausted. The last word has evidently not yet been told upon this subject; and any new attempt to solve the riddle - as far as it admits of solution - of Shakespeare's life and genius, will still, no doubt, be judged upon its own merits. We do not know whether we have been able to make any really useful addition to the already unmanageable stores of this branch of our national literature; and that is a matter on which we have no desire to indulge in any idle conjectures. But there are some points connected with the mode in which we have executed the task we have undertaken, on which we wish at once to offer a few words of explanation. We have, first of all, to state that we make no pretension to any profound scholarship of any kind.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Written about 1850 Kenney is a real scholar and this book is just chock full of facts that I never knew. One of the reasons I bought it was that I learned somewhere else that Kenny was the first scholar who thought that those two quartos that came out in 1594 and 1595, The Contention and The True Tragedy, which before it was though were written by others, perhaps Marlowe, Peele, Greene, and were touched up with added scenes by Shakespeare, were in fact, "bad" quartos of Henry VI, parts two and three, and were wholly written bv Shakespeare. It is an interesting idea, and explains some things. He takes on many other interesting issues that are still being argued today, like the spelling of Shakespeare's name. This is an old, but like a fine wine it grows better with age.

A voice of awareness and compassion By Wendy Willowby A statement of genuine and humane thoughts on our civilizationAlthough written by the father of child prodigy, William Sidis, this 45 page essay is more about civilization than explicitly setting out a course of education. It condemns barbarism and "law of the jungle thinking". Boris Sidis speaks out against the worst social evils of his time. He Speaks of child labor, railway accidents, lynching, sanitation, superstition, military spending in comparison to education etc. Like all well rounded thinkers, Boris sees the world's problems in an interconnected way stemming largely from education and omission. It is worth noting that renowned psychologist William James, upon meeting Boris Sidis and his son, once stated something like, 'If I am a genius, what superlative for him?'

People often forget just how amazing this psychologist was. His work and mind was admired by even the greats like William James, who he named his super-genius son after. His theory of "Reserve Energy" fascinated me when I was a student. This book was what started it all for me.

Narrow-minded conformists and those who worship conventionality as the high point of human civilization are bound to chafe and whine at his criticism of the status quo. Written in 1909 but even more applicable to today's world, I highly recommend it.
