Excerpt from Francis Bacon Wrote Shakespeare: The Arguments Pro and Con Frankly Dealt With`In April, 1910, I delivered a lecture for the Ladies' Guild of Francis St. Alban, which was subsequently issued in pamphlet form, for the purpose of supporting the proposition that Francis Bacon was the author of the whole of the literature, which for 300 years has passed current under the name of "Shakespeare."The pamphlet has been extensively circulated, reviewed by some leading journals, and has evoked much private correspondence addressed to myself. But as the duration of the lecture was limited to one hour, the points dealt with could only be treated sketchily, and a great number of equally salient points could not even be alluded to. I intend, in the following pages, to incorporate the text of that lecture, but to considerably amplify it, and I undertake that not one objection which has been raised within my knowledge shall be evaded or left unanswered. As a preliminary observation, I would ask attention to the fact that, in discussing this question, the whole bias of vested interests is on the side of the vulgar or "orthodox" belief. Those who call in question the authorship of the actor who was born and died in Stratford have nothing to gain. The Stratfordians have everything to lose.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Robert GreeneRobert Greene has been written about profusely. "More time and trouble have been bestowed than one cares to remember," complained the late Mr. Collins as he laid down his editor's pen. So much, indeed, has been done, so various have been the researches as to Greene's sources, his literary relationships, his friendships and his quarrels, his sinning and repenting, that one who desires to study him must go over a vast amount of material. There is the further difficulty that a few sensational remarks in Greene's writings have been given such emphasis as to withdraw attention from certain other aspects of his works and to obscure what is of more importance. I have tried to present a comprehensive treatment, based upon the investigations of previous writers and developed by what I have been able to add of my own.In the personality of Greene, and in the nature of his activity, there is considerable to stir the imagination, and to invite criticism and evaluation. These two elements, the human and the literary significance of Greene's work, I have, therefore, sought to bear in mind. Thus submitting Greene to analysis, I have found the outlines of his character as a man of letters to be rather sharply drawn. Sharply enough, I think, to be permanent. New facts will be added, new sources discovered. But these will only help to make the portrait a little more distinct. They will not, I believe, change our fundamental idea of the man or of his attitude toward literature. To those scholars who have made my work possible I acknowledge my indebtedness.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I think this is a must read for anyone looking to move ahead but searching for some support to visualize their dream. The real life stories brings you to that "aha" moment and causes you to pause, reflect and say "I can achieve that too". What I heard echoed most is one word 'sticktoitiveness' - the ability to remain committed despite the odds, which I think defines many who have made it.Hyacinth CampbellEducator/Career Coach

Prisoners of the White House looks at the isolation experienced by presidents of the United States in the White House, a habitat almost guaranteed to keep America's commander in chief far removed from everyday life. The authors look at how this is emerging as one of the most serious dilemmas facing the American presidency. As presidents have become more isolated, the role of the presidential pollster has grown. Ken Walsh has been given exclusive access to the polls and confidential memos received by presidents over the years, and has interviewed presidential pollsters directly to gain their unique perspective. Prisoners of the White House gets inside the bubble and punctures the mythology surrounding the presidency.

Prisoners of the White House: The Isolation of America's Presidents and the Crisis of Leadership, by Kenneth T. Walsh

Review Intelligent and insightful, Walsh s analysis is a reminder that for American leaders, freedom is not for free. An intriguing look at one of the world s toughest jobs. Kirkus ReviewsThis insightful and informative work will appeal to anyone interested in the evolving U.S. presidency and the ability of each administration to break out of the White House bubble and stay connected with the nation. --Library Journal (starred review)Students of political science and history will find this to be a worthwhile reflection on how the presidency has evolved. --Publishers Weekly Walsh. . .knows his beat intimately and has had at least a passing acquaintance with every president since George H.W. Bush. . . .he takes a reasonably distanced approach to the men he has covered and recognizes their faults as well as their virtues. . . .[Prisoners of the White House] is a useful survey of how presidents are isolated from their constituency and how some of them have tried to overcome that. -Johnathan Yardley of The Washington Post The biggest surprise when I started covering the White House during the Clinton years was realizing how dangerous the bubble could be to a president who failed to pierce it somehow and maintain ties to average Americans. Ken Walsh brings this challenge alive, and by his fresh reporting shows how heightened security concerns and social media innovations have made this challenge even more formidable and interesting! --Jackie Calmes, White House correspondent, The New York Times Kenneth Walsh is one of the finest reporters in the country, watching and examining a string of presidents. In Prisoners, he offers a cogent analysis of how presidents become trapped in a White House bubble, cut off from the outside world. With a keen eye for illustrative stories, he not only takes us inside their isolation but also provides a good road map for them to escape and reconnect with the country. --David Gergen, Harvard Kennedy School and Senior Political Analyst at CNNStudents of political science and history will find this to be a worthwhile reflection on how the presidency has evolved. --Publishers WeeklyKenneth Walsh is one of the finest reporters in the country, watching and examining a string of presidents. 5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. a fascinating read By nicaja I haven't finished this book yet, but I'm enjoying it so much I thought I'd write a review.Using confidential memos and letters, transcriptions of phone conversations, insider interviews, and knowledge garnered from a career covering the White House, the author provides a fascinating look at how presidents do (or do not) keep their fingers on the pulse of what constituents are thinking. I find myself frequently flipping to the back of the book to see the source of the amazing quotes and stories. (LBJ whipping it out? I kid you not. Using the N-word? Fact.)Perhaps the best parts are when the author recounts personal anecdotes, like the time Clinton absentmindedly grabbed a fork and started eating food off the author's plate (example of the entitled attitude some presidents develop.) Those stories are what really sets this book apart from other presidential histories.I've often wondered how presidents, so far removed from ordinary American life, can possibly stay grounded. This book shows just how isolated and out of touch presidents can become. As someone who works in communications, I found it particularly interesting the degree to which presidents rely on public opinion research, popular media, gut intuition, and talking to advisors and friends to make educated policy decisions and craft effective campaign messages and strategies -- and just how often they get it wrong.Prisoners of the White House will appeal to anyone interested in current events, culture, the media, history, and politics. It's accessible, informative, and highly entertaining!

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Informative, timely and pretty entertaining By irishrep I got my hands on an advance copy and managed to finish it in a little over a week. For me, this book accomplished several things: It provided a history lesson (not the boring kind); a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the presidency over the last few decades (with great details, to boot); solid insight into why presidents lose touch with the people (or never had it to begin with); a timely analysis of how Obama is doing on this front (hint: relatively well); and clear, concrete steps presidents can take to - as the author puts it - "break out of the bubble" (required reading for anyone with commander-in-chief aspirations). There's a lot of information in here, and that could make for a sluggish read in the wrong hands. But the author does a nice job of keeping it interesting, mixing in entertaining anecdotes about each president and writing readable prose to maintain the flow.I think the book will appeal to both the history buff/political scholar and the average reader interested in non-fiction (I fall somewhere in between). I also like that the book is organized by how well presidents were able to stay connected with the general populace, rather than by simple chronological order. All in all, a really good read and one of the better non-fiction books I've read in a while.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great Info Including Some Surprises By 4moreshelflife I enjoyed the history lesson of the occupants of the People's House during the last one hundred years or so. Some interesting stories, including sneaking out, of limited family movement and of hosting unique guests.Learned quite a bit that I didn't know before. Don't miss the story of President Clinton eating off of other guests plates, more than once.

Excerpt from Mont-Saint-Michel and ChartresFrom the moment when, through the courtesy of my friend Barrett Wendell, I came first to know Mr. Henry Adams's book, Mont-Saint-Michel and Chartres, I was profoundly convinced that this privately printed, jealously guarded volume should be withdrawn from its hiding-place amongst the bibliographical treasures of collectors and amateurs and given that wide publicity demanded alike by its intrinsic nature and the cause it could so admirably serve. To say that the book was a revelation is inadequately to express a fact; at once all the theology, philosophy, and mysticism, the politics, sociology, and economics, the romance, literature, and art of that greatest epoch of Christian civilization became fused in the alembic of an unique insight and precipitated by the dynamic force of a personal and distinguished style. A judgment that might well have been biased by personal inclination received the endorsement of many in two continents,, more competent to pass judgment, better able to speak with authority; and so fortified, I had the honour of saying to Mr. Adams, in the autumn of 1912, that the American Institute of Architects asked the distinguished privilege of arranging for the publication of an edition for general sale, under its own imprimatur. The result is the volume now made available for public circulation. In justice to Mr. Adams, it should be said that such publication is, in his opinion, unnecessary and uncalled-for, a conclusion in which neither the American Institute of Architects, the publishers, nor the Editor concurs. Furthermore, the form in which the book is presented is no affair of the author, who, in giving reluctant consent to publication, expressly stipulated that he should have no part or parcel in carrying out so mad a venture of faith, - as he estimated the project of giving his book to the public.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Mont-Saint-Michel and Chartres (Classic Reprint), by Henry Adams

From the Back Cover ""Mont-Saint-Michel and Chartres" is undoubtedly Adams's greatest work; though not apparently related to his earlier writings, this inspired work of poetry is the crowning achievement of his severe and somber historical oeuvre."--Maurice le Breton

"Emerson discussed man's need to discover a system of unity for his age; Henry Adams did the same for an age when the conflict was infinitely more acute and the solution less apparently obvious."--Robert Spiller

"One has the feeling that during the process of writing, the book grew way beyond its original plan and intention to be the informal travel talk of an art tourist, or an art-uncle for nieces with Kodaks. At a certain point it almost ceases to deal with esthetic experiences and becomes a confession of a seeker after unity, of a pilgrim who hopes to find in the Middle Ages an emotional repose-peace-Nirvana."--Ernst Scheyer, "The Circle of Henry Adams"

About the Author Henry Adams (1838-1918) was a famous journalist, novel writer, and historian. He is still remembered for his autobiography, The Education of Henry Adams (1918). It was first printed as a private edition for a few friends in 1907. After Adam's death the rest of the public got a chance to read the book. Many people said that it was the best book of the twentieth century, and Henry Adams was awarded the Pulitzer Prize posthumously in 1919. Adams industrious career was slowed down in 1912 when he had a stroke. Some scholars believe his stroke was caused by the news of the sinking of the Titanic, for which Adams had bought return tickets. He still continued to travel, lecture, and write letters, but at a slower pace. Adams died at his Washington, D.C. home in 1918.

By An Avid Reader Mont-Saint-Michel and Chartres should be considered and read alongside The Education of Henry Adams. In Chartres, he described the medieval world view as reflected in its cathedrals, which he believed expressed "an emotion, the deepest man ever felt--the struggle of his own littleness to grasp the infinite." Adams was drawn to the ideological unity expressed in Roman Catholicism and symbolized by the Virgin Mary; he contrasted this coherence with the uncertainties of the 20th century. An intellectual journey of an American's view of France.

Most editions of this book are facsimiles of earlier editions. You can download the book from google for free. Exact same text and layout. I ordered this item (the ASIN 1604241438 version) twice at $4.96 (I see now its about $15) and both times the cover arrived rather bent. The reprint is worth 5 dollars, because it is just a bound version of the PDF you could download from google.

Gooding Jr. This book was printed in response to my order,i.e., on demand, and the type chosen was so small I did not even attempt to read it. There were no illustrations.I subsequently bought a used copy of the paperback edition which included a brilliant preface, the illustrations, and an exponentially easier format.I threw away the copy purchased from Amazon.Probably my only truly disappointing encounter with Amazon.

WordZo is a collection of interesting short stories. (Unboastingly) Stories you have never heard of, engaging ones that sure will keep your fingers irresistibly scrolling till the last page. For the ease of consumption, the book is sliced in to sections that holds a bunch of similar, connected words and their original root word and the story to it. Besides engaging stories, WordZo personifies derived words from each root word in a perspective that will keep you reading with no road-blocks ahead. Here's a random excerpt picked by a reader: From the root word Ducere/Duc/Duct- "England got her first Duke in 1337. The English monarch, Edward III created the Dukedom of Cornwall for his son who was then just seven years old. The people of England must have wondered whether the little boy would live up to his grand title. After all, the word Duke is derived from the Latin `ducere’ which means to ‘lead’. Happily enough, England’s first Duke did grow up to be one of her greatest military heroes. The Duke of Cornwall, also known as Edward the Black Prince, led the country to some of her biggest victories in the Hundred Years War against the French. The Latin ‘ducere’, ‘dux’, ‘duct’ which means to ‘lead’ are the root for words like education, introduction, seduction and production. When you are being educated, you are being led to gain more knowledge. Similarly, when you introduce yourself to somebody, you expect that it will lead you to know the other person better. But when you seduce somebody, you may be leading them on the wrong path. Or you may be hoping that you can lead them to do what you want. Deduction is yet another word that is derived from ducere. When information or facts leads you to draw a particular conclusion, you have used your powers of deduction." But WordZo is not only about stories and word perspectives. There's a learning side to the book. A distinct vocabulary improvement approach that helps you memorise and recollect new words easy. Here's how: What makes learning new words fun? And simple? And fun, again? Want a simple answer? Wordzo! This book will familiarize you with a whole new way of developing your vocabulary. Rest assured, this won't be just another 'English textbook' that you 'have to' read, but you 'want to'! Just in case you are wondering: No, it doesn't involve you spending long hours mugging up terms from those dreadfully boring word lists. Turns out, that isn't the right way to learn after all! That English is nothing but a long list of words borrowed from cultures around the world, is no news. The interesting part though, is that the root forms of a good portion of these words are the same. Here's an example to make sense of this. Words like edict, interdict, predict and contradict share a similar root form in 'dict'. What Wordzo does is familiarize you with such root forms and 'save' the words derived from them to your long-term memory (LTM). The idea being that familiarizing yourselves with the root form will help you easily relate to a bigger cache of words that you are having a hard time learning the conventional way. Now, while simplifying vocabulary building that Wordzo promises to do, to merely describe this book as another dull dictionary-esque manual on your route to mastering this beautiful language, would be wrong. Even as the central theme revolves around word roots and their derivatives, the seamless narration it comes packaged in doesn't go unnoticed. The relative ease with which the narrator flits between different word derivatives even as he provides a complete context for each of it, is the true glue that has you sticking around for more. Suffice to say, the book is a far cry from the usual, and is a real page-turner. One that will keep you hooked all the way to the end. And unlike flash cards and word lists, you won't have to keep revisiting this book to refresh your word memory. There, that's some real incentive to read this!

The author picked 25 distinct root words to visualize a host of untold stories. Inspirational and worth the time spent. As the author outlines, you will learn the easy way to memorize new words- by relating to the story of the word, how it originated. The same time, the word explanations are done in a distinct direction. Here's a random paragraph I pulled to explain how the author does that. Love the way it is done."When you are being educated, you are being led to gain more knowledge. Similarly, when you introduce yourself to somebody, you expect that it will lead you to know the other person better. But when you seduce somebody, you may be leading them on the wrong path. Wordzo keeps you focused and intrigued by providing short stories. This is a great way to increase your vocabulary and by learning the root words, it helps memorize the vocabulary words. This is a book that will make you want to read and at the same naturally learn new vocabulary words without pushing it in your brain to memorize the words verbatim. Wordzo puts meaning into the words and as a result a root word can trigger a vocabulary word, which can follow the meaning of such vocabulary word. As you read through the book, the root words has more meaning to it, aside from being just a word. By providing meaning behind the work can trigger the long-term memory in the brain. This book reinforces the best way of increasing or learning new vocabulary words. Wordzo simplifies language-learning process. This book is really a page-turner. You will want to keep learning and learning!

By MeBerri This book is jam packed with interesting information!I like how it tells you a root word and then elaborates from there, how things got their names and why. My favorite was definitely the origination of the word duke and the coin ducats. I have a lot of interest in the Regency time period- so that was really fascinating for me.This book is a great read to expand your vocabulary or just for anyone wanting to learn interesting bits of trivia to share with your friends. Each root word and it's accompanying story is short, so it holds your attention and ends before you start to get overwhelmed. All in all this is a great book, and I am glad I stumbled across it. I will be looking for more interesting trivia from this author.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. AMAZING!!!! By mandy I LOVED this book! Wesley Holt is a former marine who suffers from PTSD. He was married to his high school sweetheart who cheated on him and left him while he was at war. He doesn't want to take a risk on love again so he keeps to himself. Wes goes to the local diner every morning to see his secret crush and favorite waitress, Carlie. Carlie is a single mom who moved to town 2 years ago. Carlie has secrets, she was in an abusive marriage and did things in her past that she's not proud of. When her past catches up with her and her ex-husband comes to town trying to steal their son, Wes will do everything he can to protect Carlie. There is so much I loved about this book. Wes was the perfect hero - he's such a good guy. He's been hurt and is afraid to fall in love again. He's never done casual relationships, he's protective and he's really good with Carlie's son Tyler. I absolutely loved the connection between Wes and Tyler from the first moment they meet and that was the exact moment I fell in love with Wes. Carlie was a fantastic heroine - she's been through so much in her life but she never feels sorry for herself. She just wants to keep her son safe. I loved Carlie and Wes together and the chemistry between them. This was such a sweet romance but still had a little suspense and action. This is the first book I have read by this author but I can't wait to read more!

I am happy to say that Ms Longley did not disappoint with this book!Wesley Holt is enjoying is life in Perfect. He's dealing with his PTSD in his own way and keeping his heart protected from any more hurt by not getting close to anyone. That is until his favorite waitress from the local diner is threatened. Carlie Stewart and her young son Tyler have been happy since coming to Perfect. Now though it seems her past has caught up to her so it appears their time in Perfect is up unless she is willing to put her faith in Wesley and his friends and believe his promise to keep them safe. This book is extremely well done and I think you will fall in love with the characters just as much as I did. I know that domestic abuse is a real hot button for a lot of readers but know that there are no scenes of abuse in this story. It's in Carlie's past and the cause of her current predicament but the relationship between Carlie and Wesley is very loving and caring.I highly recommend this one.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another great book in the series By LTR I love this whole series and after talking about it on the Romance Forum, I thought I should write a review. I don't write them often but once in a while, there's a book that just hits me right and I want to review it for others.I can't improve on Mandy's review; she described the book perfectly. Wes is a great H, ex-military, suffering from PTSD but helpful to his family and friends. He's been in love with Carlie for months, even if he won't admit it to himself, and she's interested in him too, but doesn't think she's good enough to be with him even if he were to ask (which he hasn't). Then one day, Wes goes to the diner where Carlie works, and she hasn't shown up and no one can reach her by phone. Her bosses are worried so Wes goes to her home and sees her being held captive and being threatened by her ex-husband. The ex gets away and the rest of the book is about Wes and Carlie growing closer while waiting for her ex to be captured.I like this whole series and I hope that Ms Longley will either continue with this series or start a new series with the same type of people and storytelling. The men are respectful of their women, no one is TSTL, they're regular people with regular jobs (no billionaires, thankfully) and I like how the people interact. I read these books via KU but ended up purchasing them so I could have my own copy. I'll definitely re-read them all again.

As the subject of a popular web reality series, Suzanne Barston and her husband Steve became a romantic, ethereal model for new parenthood. Called "A Parent is Born," the program’s tagline was "The journey to parenthood . . . from pregnancy to delivery and beyond." Barston valiantly surmounted the problems of pregnancy and delivery. It was the "beyond" that threw her for a loop when she found that, despite every effort, she couldn’t breastfeed her son, Leo. This difficult encounter with nursing—combined with the overwhelming public attitude that breast is not only best, it is the yardstick by which parenting prowess is measured—drove Barston to explore the silenced, minority position that breastfeeding is not always the right choice for every mother and every child. Part memoir, part popular science, and part social commentary, Bottled Up probes breastfeeding politics through the lens of Barston’s own experiences as well as those of the women she has met through her popular blog, The Fearless Formula Feeder. Incorporating expert opinions, medical literature, and popular media into a pithy, often wry narrative, Barston offers a corrective to our infatuation with the breast. Impassioned, well-reasoned, and thoroughly researched, Bottled Up asks us to think with more nuance and compassion about whether breastfeeding should remain the holy grail of good parenthood.

Bottled Up: How the Way We Feed Babies Has Come to Define Motherhood, and Why It Shouldn't, by Suzanne Barston

From Publishers Weekly Blogger/editor Barston had every intention of breastfeeding her newborn son, but the baby's severe intolerance to breast milk along with other factors thwarted her efforts. Feeling conflicted, defensive, and guilty, she spent two years researching the ups and downs of bottle and breastfeeding. Her text interweaves memoir and reporting as she scouts recent medical literature, interviews experts, and recounts her own tale as a lactation-challenged Hester Prynne. Barston makes clear that she is not antibreastfeeding; rather, her goal is to lay out the facts and examine the research so that each mother can decide for herself. Breastfeeding, she asserts, is not for every woman, whether for medical, psychological, professional, or many other reasons. She advocates a new outlook on infant feeding: one that refuses to embrace a one-size-fits-all strategy. While much has been done to support the breastfeeding mother, Barston argues, formula feeders have often been judged unfairly, without due attention to each woman's individual circumstances. Society's goal, she contends, should be to support all mothers in their right to choose what is best for themselves, their babies, and their families. Formula-feeding parents will find support, information, and encouragement in this well-researched and compassionate text, and breastfeeding moms and advocates will benefit from Barston's authentic experience and perspective as well. Review "Barston’s short and well-researched book . . . based on two years’ of interviews with pediatricians, researchers, sociologists, statisticians and fellow feminists will either help expectant moms make personal decisions, or potentially reassure them if they find themselves unable to breastfeed when they had wanted to do so." - Top 10 Books to Gift at a Baby Shower  (Brain, Child 2015-08-03)

From the Inside Flap “Barston's defense of bottlefeeding declares a moratorium on using motherhood as a dumping ground for our cultural anxieties and ambivalences. Through the deft interweave of personal narrative and sharp analysis, Bottled Up reveals how mother-blaming, sloppy science and deficient policies are far more pernicious that artificial milk." —Chris Bobel, author of The Paradox of Natural Mothering“Bottled Up is a truly timely book. It is testament to how messed up things have become when it comes to motherhood that it even had to be written. The end result is a serious, engaging, challenging and also accessible account, drawing on the best of scholarship, science and journalism.”—Ellie Lee, Director of the Centre for Parenting Culture Studies, University of Kent"“This is an informative and well-reasoned book that looks acutely at the meaning of baby feeding alternatives. It will be helpful to mothers, no matter what their choice."—Sydney Z. Spiesel, Ph.D. M.D., Clinical Professor of Pediatrics, Yale University School of Medicine“This book is a must-read for every woman and man who is fed-up with the shaming and blaming of bottle-feeding parents. Barston explains with evidence, anecdote and humour why breast isn't always best and why women will never be free to enjoy their babies and map the maternal landscape until infant feeding decisions are no longer used as a test of good motherhood.”—Dr. Leslie Cannold, author of The Book of RachaelBarston gives a heartfelt defense of mothers who go against the dogma of Breastfeeding Over All Else. Based on both personal experience and expert consultations, her conclusion: occasionally it's healthier not to breastfeed, and anyway don't stress about it. Surprisingly, such a reasonable point of view is poorly represented in the Mommy Wars. Barston's book is a welcome contribution."—Sam Wang, Ph.D., Princeton University, co-author of Welcome To Your Child's Brain: How the Mind Develops from Conception to College.

My wife had her children in the early 1980's and during pre-natal classes, was asked whether she wanted to breastfeed or formula feed and was unconditionally supported, as were all mothers in Australia at that time, in whatever feeding method she chose. She was a wonderful mother! My daughter formula fed each of her three babies and I'm not going to tell you why because, quite frankly, it doesn't matter! My daughter had her children between 2006 and 2010 at a 'baby-friendly' hospital where she was told she 'failed to breastfeed', made to feel she was the only mother who was unable to successfully feed, then given no instructions on how to safely prepare a bottle of formula. She, also, proved to be a wonderful mother!Times were certainly different, yet both my wife and daughter are wonderful mothers who cared for their children in the best way they possibly could, with unconditional love... after all, what normal mother doesn't do what is best for her babies? And I believe this to be the main point to Suzanne Barston's debut book Bottled Up, which was a wonderful and easy read with just the right mixture of personal experiences, humour, and well researched facts.Mothering is not an easy task and every mother and every family and every baby is different with different individual needs... so every mother should be supported unconditionally in whatever she has decided is best for her, her baby, and her family.Bottled Up will go a long way to re-enforcing that viewpoint and I'd highly recommend every prospective mother read this book, before the baby arrives!I'd simply say, from a man's point of view, "just feed the baby!" :)

Latched on and couldn't put it down By AJ Riley If you have ever wondered:why cans of formula come with a warning label that says breast is bestwhat's going on behind the scenes at the AAP, and what's the science behind their claimswhy you had troubles supplying enough milk when 95% of moms can breastfeed with no issueor the question posed in her introduction "Is breastfeeding really so superior that it justifies the guilt trip we heap on all of these women?"...then this book is for you. This was a fascinating read of everything that you DON'T hear about in the news or in your breastfeeding class. The author is in no way slamming breastfeeding and touts it as a perfect food, and does not in any way want to discourage breastfeeding. What she is doing is exposing the other side of the coin, the hidden side, the part that mothers, policymakers, or LCs wouldn't dare voice. The problems, the costs, the complications, and the science, but mostly focused on the human beings--the mothers who have to endure overwhelming societal pressure and what they have to say.The book starts as historical journey, the author takes us down the series of events that led our nation and world to where it is today in terms of feeding wars. I would like to combine these chapters with the beginning of Lenore Skenazy's "Free Range Kids" into a book entitled "Why you are an anxiety-filled American parent in 2012". She then goes into some unexpected and eye-opening territory in a chapter on postpartum depression, coming to some innovative solutions to help women, of which I have dogeared the pages to show to my public health coworkers on Monday morning. There is also a thought-provoking chapter on whether new laws that protect women's right to pump are actually helping or hurting moms, and the mismatched relationship of breastfeeding and WIC, which reminded me of Ruby Payne's work on poverty and how the middle class sets the rules for the lower class who has their own completely different set of rules. She then takes an in depth look at how we got to the statistics that we so often hear about, all while coloring the chapters with personal stories of herself and her blog readers facing situations you would have never even thought about.I work in the field of public health and have read a ton of studies and discourse on the subject and I was amazed by the new information presented in the book, and hope I will be able to put this new info to good use. This is a meticulously researched investigative look into all the things we know and thought we knew about infant feeding, with interviews from a wide range of experts brave enough to have been a public voice of reason.Let me end with a note about the author: Suzanne Barston runs a popular and influential blog, the Fearless Formula Feeder, whose therapeutic value to new moms formula feeding in a breast-is-best world cannot possibly be overstated. There is an undercurrent among the readers that many of them have had miscarriages, fertility problems, and postpartum depression and then breastfeeding failures to boot. These are tough, strong women, who are able to share stories every Friday that most of them would never dare tell their closest friends. Indeed the book higlights one of these women who wrote of a sexual assault she endured that she had not and will not ever tell her husband about. In that sense, the FFF blog has become sort of an Ellis Island, beckoning all the tired masses, the wretched refuse of our snobbish shores, yearning to feed free of judgement, and Suzanne our own beautiful Lady Liberty, lifting her lamp and giving us the freedom to express our feelings in a safe environment with people who understand what it's like because they've been there, too. Most of these women have traveled long, heartbreaking roads and they are tired and they are sensitive and they need the support that this blog and it's community can give them. Suzanne is the voice of all these women, the one who dares to eloquently speak out when we just aren't able to do so ourselves. And her book is awesome.

I'm a certified nurse-midwife and family nurse-practitioner who assists women throughout their pregnancy/delivery/post-birth care and in many cases also the pediatric care of their infants, so this is a topic that I deal with on a day-to-day basis. In fact, I consider myself to be somewhat of an expert on breastfeeding! So please trust me when I tell you that this book is in no way "anti-breastfeeding." Far from it! I found Bottled Up to be well-researched, engaging, and thought-provoking. In it, the author shares her deeply personal experiences attempting to breastfeed, interweaving reflections on the breast-at-any-cost mentality that's developed among certain socioeconomic/cultural groups in the U.S. with an overview of/intro to the actual state of research on the benefits of breastfeeding. Until reading this book, I did not fully comprehend the pressure that some of my patients feel to "succeed" at breastfeeding. I've been aware that this pressure seems to have increased over time, but I really had not realized how intense things have gotten until reading this book. I can now make much better sense of numerous experiences with patients who have seemed utterly desperate to breastfeed and totally devastated at the challenges they've faced. In these cases, I've tried to be supportive, but I'm now realizing there's a lot more we can do here as health professionals!! As a nurse-midwife, I've always encouraged interested women to give breastfeeding a try and have been happy to provide assistance as needed. On the other hand, I've also always figured that formula is an excellent alternative for those who don't want to or can't breastfeed. Now, though, I'm realizing that this message--formula is a good option too!--may not be getting through to families who are bombarded with the "breast is best" message . . . I think many health professionals may not realize how some of the ways we talk about breastfeeding are overselling its benefits and putting undue pressure on women at a very vulnerable time in their lives. Yes, breast may be best for many women and babies, but for many others--e.g. women who can't produce enough breast milk, women whose histories of abuse, etc. are triggered by breastfeeding, and many many other cases--it is certainly not best at all! For other women--those who simply prefer not to breastfeed--the difference between "best" and "an excellent alternative" in their individual situations may be very slight indeed, and women need accurate information here to be able to make their own choices as to what is best overall for themselves and their families. I think most health professionals will not be at all surprised with the content of this book in terms of the actual research-proven benefits of breastfeeding, etc., but it may be a wake-up call for many regarding the disconnect between the medical knowledge base on this topic and popular perception. For the general public, it's a great overview of the topic. I'll be recommending this book to all of my midwife, nurse, physician and lactation consultant colleagues, as well as many of my patients. Thank you, Suzanne, for taking a very difficult, personal experience and turning it into this outstanding book to share with the world!

It is aimed at kids about 4 to 8 years old. Older kids may not find it that amusing, but it would invite good discussion between parents and kids or even teachers and kids about life values. I imagine the printed version would make a great stocking stuffer for the Holidays. :)
