Compelling arguments in favor of opening up the educational supply-side in American public schools By Prof James N Tooley Carl Bistany is an outstanding educator, (the book is co-written with journalist Stephanie Buckley). He’s a man with a big heart who I’ve had the privilege of observing over a period of time as he wrestled with the problem of improving educational opportunity in some of the world’s difficult places, including in Iraq, inner-city America and of course his native Lebanon. This book focuses on the American situation; it is his impassioned plea to open up the supply side in American public education, to the greater benefit of underprivileged children.The argument is compelling: there is a ‘gridlock’ in educational reform in America which leaves many of the most disadvantaged children stuck in failing schools, deprived of the educational opportunities from which they could benefit (Chapter 1). There is a way forward, through charter schools, a route that the evidence shows is beneficial to the most disadvantaged (Chapter 4 highlights this evidence). But politics gets in the way of beneficial reform, with those in power and, especially, the teacher unions, opposed to charter school reform (chapter 5). Moreover, there are ‘hurdles and roadblocks’ against properly opening up the supply side, with many against for-profit providers in particular (Chapter 3); but why in a ‘time of crisis’ would anyone want to ‘limit our options’ and stifle innovation and entrepreneurship in education, especially that which benefits the disadvantaged? (Chapter 2).Given the ‘many challenges’ that create hurdles to entrepreneurs entering the public school sector in America, ‘you might rightly ask why entrepreneurs bother at all?’ (p. 73). Optimistically, the authors point out that these hurdles can be overcome, at least ‘when the stars are aligned’ (Chapter 7); the final chapter outlines policy recommendations that could make this happen more often (Chapter 9). This includes the ‘ACT SMART’ acronym, because the charter school movement needs a ‘rallying cry’ (p. 141).The tone of the book is optimistic and upbeat throughout, even when some of the stories told have clearly tested the optimism of those involved at the heart of the process. For instance, the opening story is of the SABIS charter school in Springfield, Mass., where the company wanted to take over the worst performing school in the district but was eventually allowed to take over the second worst performer. I’ve been to the school myself: it is now one of the best schools I’ve seen anywhere in the world. It deserves its genuine waiting list of 3,000 students (confirmed each term to check that parents really are still interested). Yet when SABIS applied for another charter in nearby Brockton, Mass, they were turned down – the struggle is reported in Chapter 5 on ‘Politics and power plays’.The political inhibitions against companies like SABIS trying to operate under such conditions inevitably cripples the supply side and leads to huge levels of unmet demand. For instance, in 2013, ‘charter schools in Illinois received almost 30,000 more applications than they had seats to grant’ (p. 51). In Massachusetts, the supply is so limited by the state cap that there are 45,000 students on charter school waiting lists. Nationwide it is more than 600,000. This is huge untapped demand that those in power are determined to thwart. Even when, as the authors point out, the ‘people most vehemently opposed to school choice rarely have children in failing schools’ (p. 71). Indeed, many have their own children in private schools, or have paid significantly to have their homes in the catchment areas of high quality schools. It is the poor who suffer failing schools. Through writing this book, Bistany seeks to challenge this stark unfairness.It seems an uphill struggle, and if anyone deserves to win it, it will be people like Bistany. But is it a winnable struggle? Here there is an unanswered question for me. Could a company like SABIS also consider creating ultra low-cost private schools to help meet the frustrated demand on charter school waiting lists? This would be a route that also brings in the ‘T” of the ACT SMART acronym, ‘Turn to the free market’. Yes, energetically pursue the charter school route and succeed where this is feasible. But why not explore this other free market route too? It may also be a good way forward for committed educators like Carl Bistany, who seek improved educational opportunities for all, including those most disadvantaged by the current system.

I read her second book, 'The Duke Takes a Bride' and it amazes me how different the tone was! With the Duke, it was a build-up to a crazy climax whereas with Sabrina and Luca, it was one loop after another. I was on the edge of my bed (or the rocking chair) wondering when the shoe would fall and all hell would break loose. I think at one point I stopped breathing.Luca and Sabrina have different motives for keeping each other company, but what they don't expect is to fall for each other. Their journey to finding love in a relationship that started on lies and assumed treachery turns into something dangerously delicious. Almost every turn of event made things more difficult, but I personally enjoyed constantly trying to guess the truth behind it all. The hints were a little obvious but only if your active imagination worked with a world such as Bree's haha. The final reveal, however, I did NOT expect. Blew my mind and heart apart.I recommend this read because it has a mysterious plot brewing the whole time you're reading, trying to figure out where all the characters in the story truly lie. And the setting is beautiful, not to mention all the lavishing hotels and gowns *sighs*. The drama is just crazy, ex-girlfriend level crazy, and the character development *cough-Luca-cough* was nice. But most of all, aside from the complex characters in here, is the way Luca and Bree somehow find a way to get back to each other, whether it made sense or not. It was thoroughly entertaining but it definitely touched the heart.

I especially loved how he called her "Strega" (witch) as a pet name that I almost forgot her real nane. Luca was out to do his friend a favor by distracting Sabrina. Keeping her away from him. His friend didn't explain why , just said it was important. A royal wedding was coming up and Sabrina had to go. Luca saw her and he was hooked from the start, they both were. This story has many plot twists and a lot of misunderstandings that lead to heartbreak, and a few revelations.There is even some vindictive violence and sabotge.I do not believe in writing the whole story down as a review. What I want to say is this is a great book! Love me some sexy love scenes and hot Alpha males who are tall dark and handsome mmm :) it is very well written just like her other books that I have read and loved ! I highly recommend this and all the books she writes. You won't be disappointed!!!

I especially like the way Luca and Sabrina interacts with each other, witty bantering between the two of them and quick humor. Luca calling Sabrina as a Strega comes off as very endearing and sweet in spite of the harsh meaning of the word.There's not a boring moment in from start to finish.The book is somewhat connected to the author's first two books but it is a stand alone book. You don't need to read the first two to appreciate this book. I say it's worth every penny that you'll be paying for this book.

The information that the author discusses is to the point and easy to follow. I really liked how he explains about the mindset needed to be successful at dating. By Angela Reads This is a brightly illustrated book that is sure to grab little ones' attention right away. My daughter was interested immediately. The book aims to help children understand what being multi-racial means. The little girl Sofia explains that her dad is chocolate and her mom is vanilla and she and her brother are 'chocolate mixers'. She realizes this while she is mixing chocolate syrup with vanilla soy milk. The book ends with a very positive message about how we all are a mixer of some kind or another and we are all special just the way we are.I would recommend this book to any young child, regardless of race. It will help them understand the world a little bit better.(I received a sample of this book for review purposes.)

Wonderful Children's Explanation of Mixed-Race Families, Beautifully Illustrated By Anne Wingate After three and a half weeks in bed doing nothing but read, I am finally able to stay up long enough to write some reviews. So don't think that my posting many reviews in a short period of time means that I didn't read the book. I read every word of every one. I would have read a cereal box if nothing else had been available. This book was provided to me without charge in return for an honest review.I'm white. My best friend is black. Her husband is white. I found this book terrific in its explanation, on a child's level of understanding, of mixed-race families. I wish I had had it when my oldest daughter, seeing a black woman for the first time, shouted, "Mommy, why is that lady purple?" I told her the lady was not purple; she was brown; and it was because Heavenly Father doesn't want all the flowers in his garden to be the same color. As her grandmother had a magnificent iris garden, she understood that at once. But this book is ideal for answering questions like this. I don't know yet who I'm going to give this one to. I'll have to think about it, and maybe ask Shalana. What am I saying? I KNOW I'll ask Shalana.

Kleinman-Dominguez I am a Media Specialist teacher and parent of a multiracial son. I have been reading it to my students and I like it, there aren't enough good books about growing up multiracial for the little ones or kids with limited vocabulary. There are some but they are less focused on the topic and the "swirl" or multiracial content is often just a character trait and not truly explored. Kids need to connect to the characters in an authentic way on the things that they really want to talk about. I like that the biracial reality is not some veiled behind the scenes elephant in the room kind of thing. Kids, especially the little ones or ones experiencing conflict or prejudice for the first time or ones without the language to express themselves need to be able to say it exists, how they feel about it and explore the topic. It is positive and validating, it gives them a way to express their feelings and oftentimes kids need that, they need the words, they need to have a way to think of things in a concrete positive way, especially ones with limited vocab, either due to ELL or something else.

But...I gave this book to a third grade girl for Xmas, with hopes that it would not be above her reading/interest level, and she loved it. She already seemed to know about the characters, and thought I was anciently behind the times, as I had not been seeing "the Videos". (I am cable challenged, so no Disney ) In march I took her to Target for her birthday, and said she had a 25$ budget to pick out anything she wanted. She made a beeline for the doll dept. and picked out a Star Darlings doll whose name escapes me. (Green Outfit, another surprise to me as I would have sworn my little buddy was addicted to pink and purple, but again, what do I know??)

We only THINK we are alone By sap REVIEWAdult situations, past spouse abuse, attempted murder, self defense, death, romance As you can tell by the title “His Ghost to Bear” there is a ghost (and someone had to die to BEcome the ghost) and a bear in this story. Ms. Heart and Barron continue the bear-shifter mythology to explore what could happen to them when they die. There are other issues that haunt this couple such as past abusive relationships for Candi and the usual trust issues a mixed species couple would need to overcome along with guilt, anger, self-esteem, and freedom of choice are among the obstacles this couple must overcome. They are both trying to re-build their lives when they meet. Both are battered in their own way and working to overcome that. They fight the bond, each for their own reasons, but the fight agianst the pull of their mate is too strong. What they see as a distraction turnes out to be their salvation, of course, because this is a romance! They also get some help from their friends for no-one is an island to themselves they finally realise. Together makes them stronger.I enjoyed this story inspite of the tragedies. It is the lows of hardship and conflict that help us truly appriciate the joys of life. Thanks to Ms.Barron and Ms.Heart for sharing this story in exchange for an honest review. Clayton has returned home after the death of his twin. Clayton is being followed around by his brothers ghost. Unfortunately his own bear wishes to follow him. Candi is a young mother who's son has been removed from her custody by her abusive ex. Can these two broken souls heal each other? Why is the ghost so interested in Candi? What about her ex can he really let her go? This is a well written story with strong characters. I was given this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Excerpt: In Sickness and Health She looked at me with such pain in her sunken eyes and whispered in a hoarse voice “ I feel so ashamed”. “Six years ago we said ‘in sickness and health’”. I whispered back, looking into her eyes, stroking her face, still so beautiful in spite of everything, and said as reassuringly as I could, my voice shaking as I fought back the tears, “Nothing is too much trouble. Nothing”. We held each other and sobbed. It was the worst moment of my life and hers too I think. It was also the best. She had become too weak to go to the bathroom on her own and of all the slings and arrows of sickness, this robbing of her dignity was one of the worst for her. There was one thing worse. Something that weighed so heavily on her, in spite of her constant efforts to remain positive and strong, and that was the terrible realisation she would not get to see her children grow up. This, of all things, was too painful to bear. More on the story ... My first date with Harriet was at the Natural History Museum in London for a talk given by David Attenborough. A year later, on top of a mountain in the French Alps, I kicked off my skis, got down on one knee and proposed to her. We moved to Holly Tree Farm in Hampshire in 1998 and got married there a year later. Two dogs and two children followed, Thomas in 2000 and Tilly in 2003. In July 2004 Harriet came into the bedroom saying she had just had a bad bleed and there must be something wrong. It took two flushes of the loo to make the blood go away. Nine months later, in spite of the best treatment we could hope for, and love and support from a remarkable medical team, she passed away. Cervical cancer. She was 38 years old. I packed up my life and took my kids and dogs to Cape Town in South Africa. I decided to give myself two years to get back on my feet and do something I had always wanted to do. I was going to train as a professional photographer. Two years became six. We were adopted by a street dog husky who travelled with us back to England and onto Portugal. This is the story of that journey. A liberating story of healing while on a journey to where the sun shines. All held together by two kids and a husky with an overwhelming need to mother her pack. Travels with an African Husky includes includes snippets from a cathartic project I threw myself into where I interviewed and photographed 28 remarkable old men in eight countries who were combat pilots in WWII. A couple of unexpected things came out of these conversations for me. They taught me it is possible to go through the worst kind of experience imaginable and come out the other end a more whole and compassionate person. And secondly I got a good idea of what it takes to stay in a marriage for 65 years and still be in love and loved at the end of it. This is my first attempt at writing a book in story form, so please don't judge my writing too harshly. Unclear what was the best way to do this I settled for writing it as a diary, which is pretty much how it started out anyway. Recording snippets of our lives. Vignettes giving a glimpse into things here and there. I wrote about things that hurt and things that made me laugh. I have tried to be honest, even though this has left me looking bad a lot of the time. And I wrote about things I thought people might find interesting or, most importantly, that might bring a smile to peoples’ faces. I hope you like it.

From the Author Hi Writing this book has helped me make sense of things and find meaning and happiness in a difficult time. Having said that, I have tried not to lose sight of my promise to write something people want to read. I have done my best not to be overbearing with what can be a heavy subject, but at the same time not to gloss over things. I have tried to write honestly. Most of all I have attempted to write a true story that is uplifting and hopefully funny, at least in places. I sincerely hope you enjoy reading Travels with an African Husky.

About the Author I spent my early life in Jersey in the Channel Islands and parts of Africa and Borneo. My five years in Kota Kinabalu, in the shadow of the great mountain, were spent snorkelling on coral reefs, sailing in the dinghy my dad built me and generally running amok. I had no formal education until I moved to Nelson in New Zealand at the age of 10. At 14 my parents moved to Perth in Australia where I completed an economics degree and lived until I was 27. Two years travelling between Harare, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Toronto and Atlanta followed before spending 18 years in England and another six years in Cape Town. I now live in Portugal with my kids and Amy the husky.For the last decade I have raised my kids as a single father. Their mother passed away from cancer when they were four and a half and two years old.I am a portrait and fine art photographer, and I contribute to a major photography stock agency.

Woven together with engaging stories marking the different moments and actions that took him from a terrible time in his family's life to a new life chapter filled with love and compassion for his two children and his African husky. A truly wonderful read.

It's said that there is nothing more temporary than a permanent situation, and that can certainly be true of contemporary marriages, which often seem to start off with enormous pressure and unattainable expectations, and change course rapidly with today's instant career and social changes.Compass North is in the spirit of women "leaning in," but, rather than referencing a high-powered and ambitious career, describes the contemporary struggles of a normal American wife, trying to support her husband and make a home, and then dealing with the unexpected collapse of that dream.The vehicle of her personal awakening and growth is a tragic accident that sends her on a unique journey to discover herself, her personal strength, her personal value, and her place in the world.Building the story around the harsh climate of an Alaskan winter creates a simple and beautiful canvass to paint the stark choices and problems that most people face today ... although in very different ways.It is also often said that there is nothing more permanent than a temporary situation, and the central character in this story discovers that strong and real lives are built more from experiencing one day at a time and letting each of those bricks create a strong foundation and structure, rather than following grandiose plans and professional goals.The story is well-conceived and developed into a very good and easy to read book. While some might try to classify Compass North as a "women's book," it is far deeper than that and frames insights and lessons on contemporary life and relationships that make it an excellent book for anyone.

By chance, the main character isable to disappear from her disastrous life and begin anew in the small town of Homer. Having lived in Alaska, I very much enjoyed the memorable characters as well as the beautifully-described settings. The characters each have their own secrets that the story line cleverly reveals as they interact with one another. The plot twists and revelations kept me guessing throughout. I highly recommend this novel.

By Dan Douglass The novel speaks to the fleeting thought that must occur to many people from time to time....what would I/could I do if I could just start everything over? The lead character finds herself in that situation, despite a rather traumatic way of getting there. Beset by her own life stresses and challenges, Merry forges a new life, new relationships and finds the "inner her" that an unhappy marriage had caused to disappear. In doing so, she finds her way back to being the fuller and more vibrant person that had become hidden over the years. The author clearly plans a sequel, which I hope comes soon!Enjoy! It's definitely worth your time. Appealing characters, a crisp writing style and evocative emotions. Years ago, based on a recommendation from someone on a plane, I read the first installment of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series of novels. Knowing that a sequel was already available I went with my wife to a B&N to find it. To my surprise, I could not find it anywhere until my wife walked up with a copy and laughing, explaining she had found it in the Romance Section! It's possible that Compass North could be categorized as a romance....but as with Outlander, it's so much more than that....at least to this man.Be forewarned....if you haven't visited Alaska yet, it will make you want to.....and if you already have, it makes you want to go again.
