Excerpt from The Citizen of the World, Vol. 2: Or Letters From a Chinese Philosopher, Residing in London, to His Friends in the EastIn every letter I expect accounts of some new revolutions in China, seme strange occurrence in state, or disaster among my private acquaintance. I open every pacquet with tremulous expectations, and am agreeably disappointed, when I find my friends and my country continuing in felicity. I wander, but they are at rest; they surfer few changes but what pass in my own restless imagination; it is only the rapidity of my own motion gives an imaginary swiftness to objects which are in some measure immovable.Yet, believe me, my friend, that even China itself is imperceptibly degenerating from her ancient greatness; her laws are now more venal, and her merchants are more deceitful than formerly; the very arts and sciences have run to decay.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Biting Satire Under the Guise of Rationality By Martin Asiner Lien Chi Altangi is a Chinese visitor to England who tours the country and passes witty judgments on Englishmen and their mores which he sends back to Peking in the form of letters. Tonight, he and a companion, identified only as the Man in Black, attend a live theater performance. Letter XXI contains his impressions of that performance. He begins by noting that though both the English and Chinese dearly love their theater, their respective cultural attitudes toward dramaturgy point out some vast ideological differences. English theater is performed indoors, at night, and is of short duration. Chinese theater is acted outdoors, in the daylight, and is of very long duration. The Man in Black is a regular in several of Altangi's letters, and he is often used as a mouthpiece to counterbalance what Altangi sees as invariable laws of nature in China, but elsewhere as in England these laws are quite variable. What catches Altangi's eye is the seating of the spectators. The cheapest seats occupy the highest level, a fact that astonishes him in that the reverse is true in China. Those who sit in such seats act loudly, often speaking both to one another and to the performers. The middle seats, more expensive than the former but cheaper than the highest price lodgings, hold those who seem to enjoy eating oranges as least as much as watching the show. Then there are the most expensive seats, filled by the affluent who sit in the lowest rows. Such wealthy theater-goers act more nobly if not haughtily: "They seemed to consider themselves as judges of the merit of the poet and the performers." Their collective attitudes reveal their inherent belief that the clods who sit above them are cretins, and that only true patrons of the arts, like themselves, may harbor elevated theatrical discernment. Altangi's exalted opinion of the affluent's grasp of histrionics is tempered by the Man in Black's snide comment that "not one in an hundred of them knew even the first principles of criticism" Such self-appointed critics of the arts hold that position only by default since "there was none to contradict their pretensions." Altangi's view of everyone in the audience ranged from incredulity to disgust. Those misguided souls who wished to interact with the performers were in his opinion "acting parts in dumb show, not a curtsey, or nod, that was not the result of art; not a look nor a smile that was not designed for murder." He is clearly upset with their amatory habits of public displays of affection: "Gentlemen and ladies ogled each other through spectacles." When the play begins (possibly a reference to John Home's Douglas (1757)), the actors enter, and Altangi shows surprise at the applause shown, a custom which seems absurd to him. The first actor on the stage is the queen who receives much loud applause. It seems incongruous to Altangi that the queen is receiving what he deems undeserved plaudits from the audience. She weeps and laments over issues that he considers trifles. The king enters and shows physical affection, which she quickly rejects. Altangi wonders why the king lacks a certain amatory discretion. For no reason at all, a third actor enters the stage, balancing a straw upon his nose. Altangi hears the crowd applaud noisily and cannot comprehend the logic behind this. The Man in Black unhelpfully replies: "This is one of the most important characters of the whole play." Altangi still sees no reason for the straw on the nose. At the beginning of the third act, a self-professed villain struts on stage, loudly proclaiming his villainy. Altangi notes that in Chinese drama, all villains are far more circumspect about their evil intentions. Following the entrance and exit of the villain, a child of six years strolled on stage and inexplicably began to dance, an act "which gave the ladies and mandarins infinite satisfaction." Puzzled yet once again, Altangi can conclude only that "Dancing being, I presume, as contemptible here as it is in China." The Man in Black counters that "Dancing is a very reputable and genteel employment." The higher that a dancer can kick, the greater will be his salary, he sagely advises. In the fourth act, the queen produces her son and promptly tells the audience that her son would be a better king than her husband. When her husband learns her intentions, he orders the immediate execution of the son. The queen faints as the curtain drops. In the concluding fifth act, there is no further mention made of any of these plot complications, so Altangi has no knowledge of their collective lamentable fates. As Altangi walks out of the theater, he tries to make some sense of the performance. The entire cast seemed afflicted with an endless series of ill-conceived woes. He asserts that English tragedies are overly focused on divergent passions. Chinese dramatists more properly assign subordinate and logical passions at precisely the right moment. After reaching this conclusion, Altangi bids his companion good night and heads home. In the many letters that comprise The Citizen of the World, Oliver Goldsmith, using the persona of a Chinese traveler to England, examines English society and customs in a way that permits him to stick satirical barbs into a myriad of inviting targets. Goldsmith was well aware of the reputation for logic and reason that the Chinese were reputed to possess. Thus, however outrageous were the comments of Altangi, Goldsmith assumed that his readers would not be so quick to dismiss their veracity and applicability. In Letter XXI, Goldsmith examines what he saw as some eccentricities of the English stage. In Altangi's view, Goldsmith forces his readers to examine their beloved stage productions as they might have appeared to those thoroughly disposed to reason and logic. Goldsmith spares no aspect of the English stage. From the length of the typical English tragedy to the structure of the theater and finally to the spectators observing a weird blend of drama and melodramatic nonsense, Goldsmith exposes the unbalanced underside of a theater of which even cultured Englishmen may have been blissfully unaware. Many of Altangi's comments smack of biting satire, especially since these comments seem so naturally articulated that they are voiced in the persona of one who is in logical command of his thoughts. The Man in Black is the counterweight to Altangi, with the former representing the attitudes of orthodox English society. Goldsmith limits the comments of the Man in Black to unsuccessful retorts to the infinitely more reasonable views of Altangi. Goldsmith also cannot resist taking several cheap shots at his most reviled of targets--literary critics. As he comments on the loud diatribes of the supposedly educated elite who hurl unwanted and unintelligible vitriol from their expensive seats at the stage actors, Goldsmith clearly has in mind those critics who do likewise from the comparable safety of their assorted theater reviews. In this letter, as in nearly any of his other writings, Goldsmith shows a shocking lack of self-awareness in that he was the identical sort of critic that he savaged routinely in those same writings. What readers take away from the totality of letters from his The Citizen of the World is the view of a man who wished to reveal the illogical and often disagreeable underside of a society that he saw as his own but needed to be frequently exposed to the cleansing light of the sun, a process that could be achieved only through his pen.

By Armchair Interviews When a beautiful cardinal falls from a branch of a newly planted apple tree and is trapped in deep snow on Christmas Eve, Nicholas and his grandfather retrieve the cardinal and care for it until it's strong enough to fly. Grandfather Santos is from Mexico and he talks to Nicholas about the cardinals from his home. The illustrations are beautiful and children will long to touch the pictures. At the back of the book is a "Creative Minds" section and it is filled with information about bird trivia, what to do if you find an injured bird, how to make a bird feeder, etc. Recommended for ages 4-8.Armchair Interviews says: Parents--read the book and then pick an activity to do with your children. Christmas Eve Blizzard By Shirley Labusier This story unfolds as Nicholas and his grandpa are looking out the window at an apple tree they planted seven months ago. Nicholas is concerned that it is not strong enough to withstand the first snow of this Christmas season. Nicholas refers to his grandpa as Abuelo (grandpa). Abuelo assures Nicholas that the tree was well planted and will survive for years to come.As he looks out the window Nicholas sees a red bird tumble off an apple branch onto a high drift of snow. Hurriedly putting on his coat, boots, hat and two scarves, he runs out into the storm. With the snow pelting his face, he pushes forward one step at a time. The bird is not moving and is almost covered with snow. He quickly wraps the cold bird in his extra scarf and hurries back to the house."I should be very angry, for going out in the blizzard," said grandpa. "Muy enojado, for going out in this blizzard." "Pequeno pajaro pobre- poor little bird." Grandpa builds a temporary cage for the cardinal, and Nichols adds a bowl of water and some seed. Grandpa tells Nicholas that his grandfather used to say, "When you do a good thing, good will come back to you."The next morning the cardinal was hopping around in his cage and trying to fly out. It's time to release the bird so he can find his way home. "Merry Christmas," Nicholas whispers as the cardinal flies away. Years later people come from miles around to marvel at the wonder of Nicholas' apple tree, for every Christmas the branches are covered not with apples but with bright red cardinals.Introduce your child to a few Spanish words while teaching him/her that good deeds are rewarded.

Usually, it's because of nostalgia. We associate certain things with various times in our lives. When I happened to stumble upon Christmas Eve Blizzard, by Andrea Vlahakis, I felt a surge of nostalgia, for my own childhood, my own discoveries, and my own relationships with nature and with my grandparents.Christmas Eve Blizzard is a beautifully written book. The messages in the book are appropriate for all ages. The illustrations, by Emanuel Schongut, delicately portray the harsh conditions of the storm and tell the tale in pictures as effectively as it is told in words.Additionally, this book contains various phrases in Spanish. Nicholas refers to his grandpa as "abuelo," and they each intermingle a few Spanish words within the text. The words and phrases are identified within the book and are also included in a glossary in the back of the book. The thing that makes Sylvan Dell books so unique is that they each contain a Creative Minds section in the back of the book. For educators, this information provides a wealth of classroom activity ideas. For moms and dads, this information is a great way to expand your child's knowledge and to learn various crafts you can do at home to teach your child about birds. This is the perfect read-aloud book during the holidays or any time of year.

A Book's Appearance is Worth Creative Effort By vaughn davis bornet One of the things that sets this exciting book apart from many others is its physical appearance. Publication was delayed nearly two months while the author and a committee came to agreement on major typefaces for each lover--and for the interpretive essays about the Pacific War written recently by the historian author. A colophon, a very brief commentary once featured at the close of leather bound books (a century and more ago), is the last page of Lovers in Wartime, 1944 to 1945. Skipping details here, its second paragraph says about typefaces: "Times was selected for familiarity; Goudy, graceful and balanced in italic, is appropriate for a female point of view; Bodoni offers contrast and is geometric and seems somehow male...." There are two different margins cover to cover, justified and not; they clarify prose produced in the present from that dating from wartime. One other thing: the cover was created from two amateur photos taken back then and pieced together by an artist to comprise one innovative picture. I hope this little revelation has been somewhat interesting. -----Vaughn Davis Bornet , the author.

By Jennifer Dear Dr. Bornet: I wanted you to know that I found Lovers in Wartime to be an extremely powerful and touching read. Page by page, working my way through your meeting, courtship, separation, wedding plans, honeymoon, aftermath, impending parenthood and beyond ... It felt like such a privilege to be permitted to experience getting to know you both through your own voices, with all your hopes and dreams, vulnerabilities and uncertainties. It was also an unexpected joy to see you each through the eyes of your parents and their letters. At times, it was unbearably soul-stirring. At other times, I laughed aloud. In all though, it was a pure pleasure to read. The human story that emerges triumphant in the book, is uplifting. The additional historical notes, and ever-present details of the shadow cast by war, were an education. Thank you for not leaving these letters in their boxes, but instead choosing to share them with the world. I have no doubt that others will be as moved and thrilled by them as I was.

You and Beth had a beautiful beginning and a beautiful and long life together. Your book is a magnificent account and tribute to both of you. And it is an inspiration for others in their courtships. I'm sure your family is thrilled and proud, as are your friends. I'm one of them. Elisabeth

Best Ebook Transforming Higher Education in Afghanistan: Success Amidst Ongoing Struggles, by Fred Hayward

This is a story of remarkable higher education transformation in the face of almost insurmountable odds—success in a fragile state that began a change process in Afghan higher education in a context of ongoing war and terrorist attacks, lack of funding, rampant corruption, a weak government, a large and unresponsive bureaucracy, and the loss of many of the most well-trained and successful faculty members and administrators due to threats and intimidation. Most of what has been written about Afghanistan has focused on the problems and failures. Higher Education in Afghanistan, on the other hand, has been strikingly successful to date in spite of tremendous obstacles. All this has taken place quietly with no fanfare and almost no recognition in the press, by governments, or most funders. This book explores that process with lessons for us all. - - - About the author: Fred M. Hayward has drawn on his more than 12 years of experience working closely with the Ministry of Higher Education in Afghanistan to write this reflective narrative. Hayward is a specialist in higher education with more than 25 years of experience as an educator, scholar, senior administrator, and higher education consultant. He was senior associate for the American Council on Education for more than 10 years and executive vice president of the Council on Higher Education Accreditation in 2001 and 2002; he has been a higher education consultant for the World Bank, Carnegie Corporation, Ford Foundation, Academy for Educational Development (AED), USAID, several ministries of education, and numerous universities focusing on higher education change, governance, strategic planning, and accreditation.

The opening salvo in G. K. Chesterton’s war against vagueness, affectation, and group think in life and art Part literary criticism, part jeremiad, and part metaphysical inquiry, Heretics is G. K. Chesterton’s groundbreaking attempt to cull the values, belief systems, and moral peccadilloes of his day. The twenty articles and essays included in this seminal work shed a brilliant light on the most profound mysteries of human nature.   From the works of H. G. Wells, George Bernard Shaw, and Rudyard Kipling to “The Fallacy of the Young Nation” and “The Mildness of the Yellow Press,” Chesterton casts a critical eye on the prevailing attitudes of the early twentieth century. He is at the height of his lucidity and sardonic power in Heretics, formulating a highly influential worldview that he would continue to develop in the acclaimed companion volume, Orthodoxy.   This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

Heretics, by G. K. Chesterton

Review Heretics is one of Chesterton s most important books. It is also one of his most neglected books. Perhaps the reason has to do with the title. The word heretic conjures up frightful images of controversial characters being barbecued for their beliefs. It smacks of intolerance. The very word dogmatic is perceived as being intolerant. But Chesterton says that man is the animal who makes dogmas. Trees have no dogmas. Turnips are singularly broad-minded. There is something ironic about tolerance being an ideal, and that it is connected to religious freedom. In reality, tolerance has done more to suppress religion than has any persecution. It has left us not only afraid to debate about our beliefs, it has made us afraid even to discuss them. As Chesterton says, We now talk about the weather, and call it the complete liberty of all creeds. This strange silence about religion leaves the impression that religion is not important. There is one thing that is infinitely more absurd and unpractical than burning a man for his philosophy. This is the habit of saying his philosophy does not matter, and this is done universally in the twentieth century... A man s opinion... on Botticelli matters; his opinion on all things does not matter. Chesterton says that we can t get away from the fact that we have a general view of existence, whether we like it or not. It affects and involves everything we say or do, whether we like it or not. And our general view of things is based on our ultimate view of things. Religion is never irrelevant. This book is not an attack but a defense, a defense of the ancient truths that are under attack by modern heretics. Chesterton claims to have gained a deeper appreciation of the Christian Faith through the simple exercise of defending it. He says he never realized the great philosophic common sense of Christianity until the anti-Christian writers pointed it to him. Heresy, it turns out, is usually a distinct lack of common sense. A heresy is at best a half-truth, but usually even less than that. A heresy is a fragment of the truth that is exaggerated at the expense of the rest of the truth. The modern world praises science and hygiene and progress. These are all very well and good, but they have been elevated at the expense of larger truths, such as faith and tradition and permanent ideals. In this book, Chesterton takes on George Bernard Shaw, H.G. Wells, and other heretics whose names may not be familiar, even if their heresies are still exceedingly familiar. The original objection to Heretics, which in fact compelled Chesterton to write Orthodoxy, is that his own criticisms of others were not to be taken seriously unless Chesterton himself declared what he stood for. This is perhaps why Heretics is considered the negative for which Orthodoxy is the positive. But any reasonable reader can see that Chesterton s criticisms are a defense of a well-defined position. By criticizing moral and artistic relativism, he is defending identifiable and absolute standards. By criticizing egoism and the cult of success, he is defending humility. By criticizing skepticism, morbidity and muddle-headedness, he is defending faith, hope, and clarity. Clarity. The truth which Chesterton is defending should be obvious. But because Chesterton has to defend it, it obviously isn t obvious. The heretics have obscured the truth, they have distracted us, they have won us over with lies. The first lie is that truth doesn t matter. --Dale Ahlquist, American Chesterton Society

About the Author G. K. Chesterton (1874–1936) was a prolific English journalist and author best known for his mystery series featuring the priest-detective Father Brown and for the metaphysical thriller The Man Who Was Thursday. Baptized into the Church of England, Chesterton underwent a crisis of faith as a young man and became fascinated with the occult. He eventually converted to Roman Catholicism and published some of Christianity’s most influential apologetics, including Heretics and Orthodoxy.

Sparkling Chesterton By Xenophanes Heretics is somewhat neglected in Chesterton's oeuvre, possibly because it is an early work (1905), and many of the writers discussed are out of fashion now. Yet, I believe Heretics contains not only his best writing, but it already establishes the main themes of his life's work.Technically, it is a book of literary criticism, but from an unusual point of view, that of his subjects' philosophy."I am not concerned with Shaw as one of the most brilliant and one of the most honest men alive; I am concerned with him as a heretic--that is to say, a man whose philosophy is solid, quite coherent, and quite wrong." (p. 22)Brilliant though he was, Shaw expected reality to conform to an inhuman ideal:"He has all the time been silently comparing humanity with something that was not human, with a monster from Mars, with the Wise Man of the Stoics, with the Economic Man of the Fabians, with Julius Caesar, with Siegfried, with Superman. Now, to have this inner and merciless standard may be a very good thing, or a very bad one, it may be excellent or unfortunate. but it is not seeing things as they are." (pp. 62-63)This is excellent writing, whether we entirely agree or not. It may be a little unfair to Shaw, but it is fair to life.Chesterton is often called an optimist. But he knew the other side, as anyone reading Alzina Stone Dale's life, The Outline of Sanity, can find out. Joy in living, good beer, conversation, balance, sanity, these were achievements, not just nature.I have managed to find a couple of books by George A. Moore, including his autobiographical novel portraying the Paris of the Impressionists of the 1870s and 1880s, Confessions of a Young Man. One tends to regard it as a memoir, and Chesterton did so. Chesterton attacks his egoism, the interest in the world as related to his own temperament:"We should really be much more interested in Mr. Moore if he were not quite so interested in himself. We feel as if we were being shown through a gallery of really fine pictures, into each of which, by some useless and discordant convention, the artist had represented the same figure in the same attitude. 'The Grand Canal with a distant view of Mr. Moore," "Effect of Mr. Moore through a Scotch Mist,' 'Mr. Moore by Firelight,' 'Ruins of Mr. Moore by Moonlight,' and so on seems to be the endless series." (pp. 131-132)That has to be one of the funniest sentences ever written, and I could barely type it for laughing. A bit later on the page, Chesterton gives his vision of originality:"Thinking about himself will lead to trying to be the universe; trying to be the universe will lead to ceasing to be anything. If, on the other hand, a man is sensible enough to think only about the universe; he will think about it in his own way. He will keep virgin the secret of God; he will see the grass as no other man can see it, and look at a sun that no man has ever known."There is no space to mention all the wonderful writing in Heretics. I will mention his often expressed view of the narrowness of the larger world, where one can choose one's companions, as opposed to the nation, the neighborhood or the family, where one has to take people the way they are, with all their foibles."The best way that a man could test his readiness to encounter the common variety of mankind would be to climb down a chimney into any house at random, and get on as well as possible with the people inside. And that is essentially what each one of us did on the day he was born." (p. 190)As always, Chesterton's ideas are eminently discussable! No commentary of mine could do justice to the variety, wisdom, and good humour in this book. The best thing would be to find a copy and read it.I have the John Lane edition, 1905.

Foster This book is a sort of prequal to Chesterton's most famous apologetic work, "Orthodoxy." "Heretics" is a collection of papers that Chesterton wrote to expose what he considered to be the unhealthy philosophies of his day. A critic later wrote of this work, "I will begin to worry about my philosophy...when Mr. Chesterton has given us his." Chesterton then wrote the book "Orthodoxy" in response to that comment. With that said, it is well to note that "Heretics" and "Orthodoxy" should be read almost as a single work. From the viewpoint of Chesterton, "Heretics" is the critique of bad philosophy and "Orthodoxy" is the defense of good philosophy. The trouble with "Heretics" is that it is such a local book. What I mean is that this book is a series of analytical criticisms of specific men during that specific time period (late 19th century to early 20th century) and it is easy to miss the points Chesterton makes if you are not familiar with the philosophies and views of the men he is critiquing. That isn't to say this book isn't one Chesterton's finest works. Yet, I would certainly reccomend "Heretics: The Annotated Edition" to anyone who is not very familiar with these particular early 20th century English writers which he is referring to in this book. The annotated edition makes it much easier to see what Chesterton is saying. For although people change over time, philosophies generally remain the same; and that is why Chesterton's criticisms of these philosophies are still relevant. And as stated earlier, this book, in a way, sets up the groundwork for "Orthodoxy," which is still considered a masterpiece; and almost certainly worth reading for anyone who does not understand or sympathize with the sentiment and romance of the Christian faith.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. And still undefeated . . . By B. Sherman Heretics is basically a collection of essays written in response to the worldview, socio-political philosophies, and/or religious stances of G.K. Chesterton's contemporaries (like George Bernard Shaw and H.G. Wells). Chesterton enjoyed an ongoing and lively public debate with many of these fellows throughout his writing life. To that end, if you're a Chesterton-fan, you'll enjoy this as much as anything else you've probably read by the undefeated heavyweight champion of linguistic pugilism. If you're not a Chesterton fan (usually because you've yet to hear of the man), this is probably as good a place as any to start. Heretics is the book that sort of necessitated Orthodoxy; a more famous, much-beloved piece.I would recommend this book for those interested in exploring the arena of worldview debate. It isn't a long book, at only about 150 pages. The essay are broken up into nice little chunks that you can read in a half-hour or so, spend some time mulling, and maybe read through again, if you'd like. I could attempt to describe the content of the essay's, but it would take way too long, and I'd fail to do it anywhere near as well the Big Man himself.

Deb, uses her real life experiences as the founder of Dionysus Theater in Houston. The "True Tales" of the book are my favorites where the reader can see that the writer has worked with individuals living with multiple disabilities. The book has a place for readers to write notes and reflect on key points in the book. The language is also very disability positive, the reader immediately knows that they are learning from an expert. A must have for anyone who wishes to work with people with disabilities.

Excerpt from Synge and the Ireland of His TimeAt times during Synge's last illness, Lady Gregory and I would speak of his work and always find some pleasure in the thought that unlike ourselves, who had made our experiments in public, he would leave to the world nothing to be wished away - nothing that was not beautiful or powerful in itself, or necessary as an expression of his life and thought. When he died we were in much anxiety, for a letter written before his last illness, and printed in the selection of his poems published at the Cuala Press, had shown that he was anxious about the fate of his manuscripts and scattered writings. On the evening of the night he died he had asked that I might come to him the next day; and my diary of the days following his death shows how great was our anxiety. Presently however, all seemed to have come right, for the Executors sent me the following letter that had been found among his papers, and promised to carry out his wishes.May 4th, 1908Dear Yeats,This is only to go to you if anything should go wrong with me under the operation or after it. I am a little bothered about my 'papers'.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He loves that it is a mix of comic form, longer pages and pictures. To encourage reading we usually do a system of him reading a couple pages then I will read a page and doing that back and forth. Last night he grabs the book from me and says, "I want to ready it all." I couldn't believe it :) I highly recommend this book set. I hope they come out with more because I will be the first one to buy them!

Our family loves it. It is very funny and a graphic, drama on your child's daily life at school; just star wars style. Also, the drawings are good for kids draw and make their own graphic comics. It is an easy & quick read, and great media for parent/kid interaction. The series seems well suited for young readers.

He even got up in the morning and started reading on his own, which is saying a lot because normally he goes straight for his electronics. The plots are cute and funny but also tackle real issues that are of interest to school-age kids, such as bullying, friendship, setting goals and fitting in.

Free Ebook A Love Story...How God Pursued Me and Found Me: An Impossibly True Story, by Samantha Chandler

The tale of Samantha Ryan Chandler's life is evocatively portrayed in her book: A Love Story, How God Pursued Me and Found Me. It tells of a life that is as disturbing and unsettling as it is uplifting and, in the end, gratifying. How "A girl from Nowhere, Louisiana" finds her way from such humble beginnings to live and walk amongst presidents and the supremely rich, only to find her trust and faith betrayed by those that she loved and trusted the most. She would be tested to the point where she began to doubt her own sanity and, at the moment of her greatest desperation and doubt, she was found by God and brought back from the brink of hopeless despair. Blessed with an almost unquenchable optimism and a unique sense of humor, she relates the story of a life that will speak to those who have encountered abuse, unfairness and anguish. Her love for her children and her faith in God carried her through a crucible of fire and in the end, made her a better, stronger person, ready to carry on with a life that is again filled with love, joy and laughter. A Love Story, How God Pursued Me and Found Me will both inspire you and touch your heart.

I lost my career and my first wife to cancer before our 15th anniversary, leaving me with four young boys to raise. Later, I married Cherie, who was raising three boys. As if raising 7 boys hasn't been enough of a challenge, I now help care for my 106-year-old grandma!Sometimes I need to be reassured that someone faced greater challenges and not only survived, but emerged stronger, more joyful, and even better for having gone through it. That's the assurance I feel after reading Samantha Chandler's A Love Story.I had a hard time putting this one down. Chandler wasted little time with unnecessary details, throwing me headlong into her tumultuous life. From the age of four, she lived in fear, never hearing the words "I love you" from her cruel and twisted mother. Her first husband took over the emotional abuse where her mother left off, in the end threatening to separate her from her dear children. So how do you handle such intense emotional and even physical suffering? How do you put it behind you? Is it possible to forgive and move on - even becoming better in the process? That's the hope that Chandler holds out to readers. I for one am more hopeful having read her journey.

By The CHRISTIAN ENQUIRER I connected with Samantha Chandler through Twitter, was led to feature her story through The Christian Enquirer, and decided to purchase and read her book for myself. While everyone has a story to tell, few by far have the courage and resolve to put into writing their life's worst trials and tribulations, especially when they are so severe and demeaning. Yet Samantha's resolve to put her message of hope and victory through God above any embarrasement or shame while also not playing the "victim card" speaks volumes as to how far she has come, delivered from the depths of despair by our loving and gracious God. Samantha has combined so many dimensions of her "impossibly true story" in such a candid way that it was practically as if I was right there beside her, watching and experiencing with her first-hand the hardships, betrayals, and recovery she has had to live through and endure. By the grace of God she is a survivor, and her story is one that should encourage and inspire anyone who has or is dealing with hardships at the hands of others, especially loved ones. For those more fortunate, her story is gripping enough to make one appreciate all the more how good they have it, and how bad things could be -- and are for others less fortunate. Thank you Samantha for the courage to undertake this work, and may the Lord continue to bless you and your daughters while He also continues to use your story to help, inspire and encourage others to seek and keep faith in Him no matter what the circumstances (Romans 8:28).

A Love Story How God pursued me and found me - Awesome book By Joni Smith I started reading Samantha's book on the airplane so I wouldn't be so bored. I wasn't. I couldnt stop reading it. She tells the story of her life from her heart. I could see how spiritually blind she was and then how God truly opened her eyes and enveloped her in His love. I love it when books are written with such open abandonment. As I see that is how she is when communicating with God in her own life now. I also had a mother and father that didn't care about us 4 children. We pretty much raised ourselves. Which meant we had to learn everything the hard way. By the grace of God, he becomes our Father. She stated "Love is the most powerful emotion known to man. When we love, we are most like God, for he is love. Now I am healed enough to have confidence in my choices. Here is my heart, Lord. Take it and seal it with your love." Amen to that Samantha. I hope you keep writing.
