Perfect Holiday Gift and a Book You Will Read Over&Over Again- It Never Gets Old By Eve I couldn't think of a better timing to read this book and my first thought was "EVERYONE NEEDS TO READ IT". After we are done buying turkeys and sweet potatoes, running around buying gifts, trees, and decorations, and just simply rushing thru life, spending every minute of it to accomplish more, to make more, to get better and more expensive things, we need to stop or at least slow down.In our race for something in life we forget the true meaning of simple words like LOVE, HONESTY, APPRECIATION, HELP.....We all forget to be grateful for simple things in life and realize how important it is to live every day like it would be our last. Live in a moment! This book with its short stories is like a little wakeup call for us to take a deep breath and to reflect on our life and those around us. Its' kind of a book that you will pick up over and over again when you need a break, when you need a little pick me up when you are down. Jaye once again takes the reader through an emotional trip touching on ones heart strings of love, romance, nostalgia, sadness, joy, hope, inspiration and human compassion. In writing about the bonding of a father and daughter, stories of childhood best friends, high school attachments, even strangers who touched each others lives without meeting. These stories along with the constant underlying message of the passage of time in regards to various relationships in our lives has to open ones eyes to their own mortality and what each individual person has experienced on their own personal level. I know for myself it made me sit down with my wife of 43 years and look at old pictures going back to our school days and reminisce about the people we encountered and of our lives together. Thank you Jaye for a wonderful and emotional look back at our lives.

About the Author Susan McBrine worked for 37 years as an educator in California, as a secondary English teacher, a special education teacher, and a mentor to new teachers. She received her BA and secondary English credential from UC Davis and got her special Ed specialist credential in moderate to severe disabilities from San Diego State University. She is the co founder of the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance, a national medical research and support organization for those with tuberous sclerosis complex, and is a board member for Del Sol School for children with behavioral challenges. She is the mother of four adult children, one of whom had severe disabilities from tuberous sclerosis and autism. She has volunteered and trained volunteers in Special Olympics and Girl Scouts Disability Awareness, has worked as a day camp director for children with disabilities, led a sibling in-service for siblings of special ed students, and designed a peer tutor program for high school students to work with students with disabilities. She served on the California Teachers association state council, and its special Ed committee and county office of Ed caucus, and served as CTA president. She happily lives with her husband, Steve, on the Oregon coast. Between them they have twelve granchildren.

It helps teachers understand the unique challenges of SPECIAL parenting, and helps parents understand that they need to help the teachers learn about their special kiddos challenges at home, and how that affects school. This book should be in every school!!!

By RosaLee Mitchell I am a former educator who worked a lot with parents of my students-- from preschool through high school in varied settings, over my 30-year career. My students included many who had special needs, and every one of them presented unique challenges. I read this book through in an evening, and found it easy to read and also not in the least tedious or boring. Rather, it held my interest well, as I could relate the solid substance to my own experiences with children and their parents, and I liked the uplifting tyle and tone as well. Any time you have a perspective offered from someone who understands firsthand the challenges of both parents and teachers, you have a gem. The author of this book clearly speaks from the heart as well as giving so much helpful information. Read it, and keep as a reference or pass it on. It's a winner!

I would have so benefited by having had this book at my disposal when I was teaching and would absolutely have made it available-with high recommendation-to the parents of my students. This book would be a great text at the college level for aspiring special educators!

Heart Wrenching/ Heart Warming By Double Eagle Design I uploaded this tremendous story to my Kindle thinking I'd read it over the next several days of travel. Wrong. I read it in several hours of the first NIGHT of travel. I simply could NOT put down this incredible, frank account of one child in need and a family's following God's lead to help. It's a humbling story in the sense, you MUST ask yourself at the end: What more should I be doing, Father? Do WE as a family get so sidetracked being US we miss the needy, the heartbroken right in front of or beside of us?The Scriptures given in the book felt like an old, worn favorite blanket... Verses I've heard my entire Christian life, memorized in most instances long ago... but reading them in this context was both refreshing and challenging. Thank You, Jesus!Ellen writes in such an endearing way, she feels like a long time friend/soul sister. I am challenged today to JOURNAL my thoughts and my walk with my Sweet Lord more consistently because of her, and I WILL look at others DIFFERENTLY. As Mother Teresa said, it is through prayer that we will receive the grace to see others with this new mind of Jesus. Thanks to Ellen Huntington, for this precious reminder. You'll be in my prayers forever.

I have read few stories that feel as real and genuine as "Who Cried for the Little Boy?" As Ellen allows us to enter her world, we experience the joy, heartbreak, and frustration of trying to love the "unlovable." What makes this story so special is the fact that Ellen acknowledges her imperfections as well as the reality of her situation. Although she knows that a perfect fairy-tale ending is almost certainly out of reach, she continues to move forward and place her faith in God, even when she doesn't understand His plan. Ellen's struggle is a moving testament of the power of God's call and presence in the lives of His followers.

My only question is: where is Josh at in his life now? I hope and pray he can somehow find peace in his life -- as a survivor of sexual assault as a child, I know that peace is so hard to come by, and I've somehow been able to find mine after more than 30 years as a survivor. Josh has made some unfortunate choices in his life, and I'm sure this book was a challenging experience for Ellen, but one that was well worth the effort.

She speaks as though addressing a child, repeating the refrain "you're here for a reason" and explaining that good things happen to others because of the child. Her answer to this life question may be unsatisfactory or too simplistic for some. Nevertheless, she fashions it into an encouraging sentiment that gives peace of mind. To evoke this sense, Tillman illustrates children mingling with animals in a vibrantly colored, dreamlike realm. As usual, her characteristic, almost photographic, digital and mixed-media paintings complement the soothing cadence of the text and beautiful rhyme. Goodwill spreads from page to page in the shape of a kite and a ball, showing how actions affect the world. Tillman frames her lovely poem with the idea of a puzzle, starting the verse that reads, "If not for your hands and your eyes and your feet,/the world, like a puzzle, would be incomplete" and ending with an image of a globe made up of puzzle pieces, depicting the paintings in the book.. It may not be obvious, but every person is a piece required to form the whole. He is only one so it is a little advanced for him, but I like reading to my children and figure that even if they don't understand everything right now, the words will make their mark. This is the sort of book that I want to have an impact on them. The message is stronger than most realize.The kids are in bed right now and their dad is working tonight. I am alone in the house and a dark wave of depression has settled in to keep me company. It is something that I have dealt with most of my life. My birthday is tomorrow. I turn 35 and feel worthless. I am disappointed with where I am at and feel of no value to the world. I know I am of value to my children and my animals and I treasure them more than words can convey, but beyond that, I feel like wasted space. This is an emotion that has always plagued me, even when logically, I realize I have done some very good things. It is the depression and it wraps its deceptive arms around me in my times of sorrow to comfort me with my own despair.So while I am alone, I decided to clean up and put away my son's gifts. I picked up this book from the pile and decided to sit down and read it. I wasn't prepared to feel the words the way that I did. It feels silly to say that a book meant for children also feels meant for people with depression, but it does. There is little comfort for the constant sadness that stirs within me at times like this, yet somehow this book provided it. It is really very simple text with nothing that I haven't already heard before. Maybe it was the timing. Still, the reminder that even though everything seems stagnant right now, the good that I have done is likely still resonating out there, meant something to me. The things that I have done have mattered and are still mattering and will continue to matter. In some way, I must matter too. I really needed that tonight."You're here for a reason.It's totally true.You're part of a world thatis counting on you.So don't be too worriedif some days fall flat.Good things can happen,even from that."I will read this book to my children often and strive to fill them with a sense of love and value. As I read it to them, I will also be reading it to myself as a reminder.In addition to recommending it for kids, I would also recommend it as a gift for those with depression when you want to do something for them, but just don't know what. It addresses the bad days and how they shouldn't drag you down. It is optimistic and the illustrations parallel the theme through a lost kite and ball that end up being repurposed and appreciated by many others. These represent the setbacks in life that may have a silver lining. Kindness really can have a ripple effect- even if those ripples are not always seen by the initiator.Though at first I was thinking it would be perfect for a baby shower or new parent, I think this book would actually be perfect as a "thinking of you" gift for a friend or family member who is going through a really rough time. Both children and adults will be able to get something out of the story.

Incredibly inspiring for both children and adults, and the pictures are gorgeous (as is the norm with Nancy Tillman's books). The message - that everyone is important and is on this earth for a reason - is so beautiful that it's hard not to cry reading it (making for some awkward readings with my toddler). Nancy Tillman's books are all wonderful, but this one takes the cake for us. Highly, highly recommend.

A Unique and Wonderful BooK By Fu Xi This book is not about being an intellectual in the American sense of showing off, but about how to be a scholar or other whose work is based on thought. In my case it is science and ancient Chinese thought. The advice in the book applies equally to both fields.It points out that intellectual work requires asceticism and this is quite true in my experience. Many hours must be spent in study and at the lab bench or computer. While interaction with other scholars is part of the reward, one cannot contribute without the solitary hours of reading and writing.The book is somewhat repetitious and, like most French philosophy, highly abstract. Yet it is the only source I have found that addresses the life of the mind so completely.Highly recommended both for those beginning a life of scholarship and for acccomplished scholars who want to reflect on their lives.

The Intellectual Life by Philip Gilbert Hamerton ---Paperback 8x11 By Gary Jedynak Hamerton uses the word 'intellectual' in the circa 1870's European sense. With careful attention to that word and the 19th century authorship, this book's subject matter itself is perhaps the best book of its kind. For those intellectuals seeking guidance or mentors who seeking guidance for their mentees Hamerton's elegant writing style is a delight for all those who are so intrigued. Hamerton wrote several other equally prescient books.Hamerton presents his thesis and personal concern using many short stories about the experience of his friends, acquaintances, and his own life. These individuals had very different beginnings in life yet found themselves on similar trajectories. Many if not most of us might (have) find this book life-changing if read seriously while young. However it is edifying at any age. Hamerton gently reminds us throughout life is short and smart people amidst their dreams often overestimate what they can do in a lifetime. Hence they often make a mess in subsequent shortfalls. As a good example of someone avoiding this consequence of haste in living thoughtfully, Hamerton recounts the wisdom of his father's approach to life.As he used the male pronoun Hamerton throughout, note he writes for both genders (if you read carefully) explaining British culture (~1873) did not recognize female intellectualism. Hence few young women were able to get support for such an orientation. Hamerton clearly observes there was no reason why women could not seek development of a higher intellect. Several of his stories were about young women.On the topic of the welfare of unmarried men, who as men found it easier to develop as intellectuals in 1873 circa Britain, he laments their frustration with finding suitable marriage prospects. These few women would understand and accept their husbands' psychology and be undaunted by their often uncommon personalities. He notes the unliklihood of this type of match might lead to poor alternative choices. Happily for Hamerton he did find just the right woman although late in life.The type font chosen for this publishing, perhaps for economy, has a very thin letter style (ie font weight) and for me is somewhat harder to read. Otherwise this soft cover version is well-made. There are the online versions however as a bookshelf destined gift this book is a classic. There are more recent hardcover reprints. Thus the paperback is a bargain. Otherwise it will be rare book prices for the 1873 printing. Beware there is another book of very similar title but different author. My five star rating is for the original literary work and does not reflect the quality of this particular publication.

"The Intellectual Life" is a very shrewd piece of work, the writing both articulate and timely. There is philosophical advice on almost every sort of topic, from intellectual friendships to sickness and solitude to nonconformity. Hamerton's writing is sensible, straight-forward but intelligent, and always insightful. For a book written in the 1800s its commentary on life is still relevant in twenty-first century society. I consult this book quite often and always find myself surprised and amused by what is written. This is a neglected piece of work from a neglected writer in philosophy.

Great introduction to the Stinson Wellness Model By Jemmagirl Reading Aligning Life is like entering a conversation with David Stinson; the tone of the writing is gentle and invites engagement. In fact, the second half of the book, working with the model, is set up as a series of discussions rather than didactic chapters. Each wellness 'pillar' (purpose, balance, congruence, sustainability) is presented individually along with worksheets, all unpacked within the overarching framing of body, mind, and spirit.I have used the Stinson Wellness Model in nursing education, nursing research, and in clinical practice. The model is a comprehensive approach that is easily modified to fit specific patient groups and individuals. I am always concerned that most wellness models tend to be fixated on physical prowess--which immediately precludes many patient groups. Not so the Stinson Wellness Model; wellness is a step by step movement rather than a static point. Everyone, regardless of diagnosis or time of life can be moving toward intrinsic wellness. Surprisingly, this deceptively simple approach to wellness has successfully been used by individuals, groups, and organizations.I highly recommend this little volume as a great start to learning the Stinson Wellness Model and continuing your own wellness journey step by step!

The style was witty and light but occasionally dramatic and somber. It was written in a flowing, conversational style and very readable. The descriptions of Ireland were particularly vivid and charming. The author makes excellent use of sensory details to help readers see, hear, and smell what is happening. Having been to Ireland several times the author put me back there instantly with her wonderfully accurate descriptions. The author is dealing with the two big themes of literature: love and death. Has done a fine job of conveying some very complex emotions. She has recreated a full picture of her Ireland with all its beauty, interesting Irish personalities, habits and foibles. Although this book seems to be targeted to women it was fascinating to me and kept my interest from chapter to chapter making me eager to find out what happens to Kate next. So much so ,I read it in one sitting. Looking forward to her next novel!

While nominally about a middle aged woman who takes a sabbatical from her university teaching career soon after her mother's death, it seems to me more a 'coming of age' tale for men and women who have lived the first part of their lives in the expected ways and are on the brink of something new. I loved the references to inborn or early-taught characteristics based on heritage and family ways. The richly described terrain and the rain of Ireland gave dimension to the story that moved in such a compelling way that I just kept reading...and then it was done. I hope the author writes more books.

Kind hearted but people who definitely march to their own drummer. Of course Seth is part of that same community but Ivy seems to have the funniest people around her. I liked each one of them, especially the older women in the group who didn't slow down with age. Scratch that, I LOVED those women! They added so much to the story, they danced around like they were still young'uns. . Seth's friends were unique as well and this story isn't just about the romance troubles between the MC's. There were several other romances being worked out as well. Ivy was hiding secret hurts, things she felt that she couldn't share with anyone else, especially Seth. But that also adds to their inability to reach an agreement on how to proceed with their attraction. So most of the time it didn't proceed even though it left the both frustrated and hurting. Seth was a rescuer,someone who helped his friends sometimes even to his own hurt at times. He was great with his kids too, even though he often felt like he was over his head on that, especially with his daughter, Grace. These people in this town were some of the hardest working people around especially both Ivy AND Seth.All in All I liked the story, not one that I would be keeping but one that I did enjoy when I was reading it. There were some parts I liked better than others.There is also a quick look into the book,"Cowboy Who Came for Christmas".Nice choice for the cover of this book.I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Very nice rural love story By Kindle Customer Ivy runs the Millstone Dairy Farm she inherited when her parents died in a cruise ship accident when she was 22. She runs the farm with the help of a manager and two part time workers. If you don't know anything about dairy farming, this author knows her stuff. Ivy works long hours and does not have much time for a social life. She has the hots for Seth who moved to town and bought the feed store. Ivy wants a no strings relationship, but Seth is looking for a wife and a mother for his two children.They have had this attraction, but cannot come to terms. Seth tells her he is going to look for someone ready to commit. Then her manager quits with no notice and her hired hand walks off because she won't make him manager after making her very uncomfortable. Ivy finally has to ask Seth for temporary help. Now Ivy has to work closely with Seth, come to terms with her past and his children and try to keep everyone safe from her former employee.I liked the other characters in this quirky little town. We weave through the relationship angst and ups and downs of their lives. The farming is spot on in case you have ever wondered how milk gets from the cow to your market. There is no instant love and no convenient pregnancy to keep Seth and Ivy from having to do the hard relationship work. Best of all, neither is a billionaire.I received this book free for giving a review.

Love in A Small Town By lilylastIlooked This is the first book I've read by this author.I have lived in cities for most of my life, so it's sometimes difficult for me to relate to small town stories.However, from the very beginning the story drew me in and I became interested in the lives of the characters, perhaps because though the story took place in a small town, it was a look at life as can happen anyplace.The hero and heroine are multi-dimensional and both have layers and blind spots , as do the other characters. I did have the feeling at points that this was not the first book in a series,but quick reviews of storylines were naturally seamed into the weaving of the story. The plot was well-defined and held my interest.I really liked the characters and their devotion to each other as friends. It made sense for their relationship to evolve into love, as was true of a pair of secondary characters in the bookI enjoyed the way the story unfolded, betwen the main characters as well as the others; there is a nice flow and natural rhythm to the relationships. Much of the story is inspired by a sense of place, an appreciation for the past, and unexpected amd often small pleasures in life. A very good read*I was offered this book in return for an honest review
