They might be chicks, but they sure aren’t chicken, and they’re on a mission. And on this, their first (mis)adventure “in this delightful spinoff of the J.J. Tully series” (Kirkus Reviews), the Chicken Squad launches a galactic backyard expedition.Meet the Chicken Squad: Dirt, Sugar, Poppy, and Sweetie. These chicks are not your typical barnyard puffs of fluff, and they are not about to spend their days pecking chicken feed and chasing bugs. No sir, they’re too busy solving mysteries and fighting crime. So when Squirrel comes barreling into the chicken coop, the chicks know they’re about to get a case. But with his poor knowledge of shapes (“Big” is not a shape, Squirrel!) and utter fear of whatever it is that’s out there, the panicky Squirrel is NO HELP. Good thing these chicks are professionals. But even professionals get worried. Especially once they see that round, shiny, green, BIG thing in the yard. What if it’s a UFO full of aliens who want chickens as pets, or worse, dinner? It’s up to the Chicken Squad to crack a case that just might be out of this world.

The Chicken Squad: The First Misadventure, by Doreen Cronin

From School Library Journal Gr 1–3—Those cheeky chicks are back—this time in a series all their own. Fresh on the heels of their adventures in The Trouble with Chickens (2011) and The Legend of Diamond Lil (2012, both HarperCollins), Dirt, Sugar, Sweetie, and Poppy must now contend with a cowardly squirrel named Tail and a "big and scary" something that has landed in the backyard. Using deductive reasoning and some strangely creative camouflage, the chickens hatch a plan to investigate the mysterious object. The curmudgeonly ex-police dog, J.J. Tully, lends his deadpan observations to the humorous text, while Cornell's black-and-white illustrations bring Cronin's oddball characters to life with a goofy charm. Kids who enjoyed the first two books in the "J.J. Tully Mysteries" series will be delighted that the four intrepid chicks take center stage in this laugh-out-loud new chapter book series.—Kiera Parrott, School Library Journal

From Booklist When a terrified squirrel barges into a backyard chicken coop looking for help, four tough little chicks patiently draw out his story and try to figure out what frightened the panicky critter. Deducing that a UFO may have landed in the yard, chicks Dirt, Sugar, Poppy, and Sweetie camouflage themselves with grass clippings and pelt the new (vaguely UFO-like) barbecue grill with rocks in a misguided attempt to rescue Moosh, their mom. Retired search-and-rescue dog J. J. Tully charges in to stop the attack and set things straight. If the characters sound familiar, they appeared in the J. J. Tully Mystery series. Now the four little chicks move into the spotlight for the Chicken Squad series. With its shorter text and larger type, the book will suit somewhat younger readers, those just moving up to chapter books. As in the previous series, some chapters are written in third person, while others are narrated by the dog. Cornell’s comical gray-wash illustrations magnify the story’s mild humor. An amusing beginning chapter book. Grades 2-4. --Carolyn Phelan

Review "Cornell’s illustrations give life to the chicks and their individual personalities. Each one pursues his or her own agenda, though they are often united in a common cause. Like four small, fuzzy, yellow Don Quixotes, they see giants in windmills or, in this case, aliens in backyard grills." - New York Times

The chickens now have their own stories, although J.J. is still a integral part - retired, and their protector.Doreen Cronin is very well known for her silly animal stories - many of which I have in my classroom library. In The Chicken Squad, Cronin once again has managed to pack so much within a story. There is humor, a familiar dog, a "big and scary" mystery, very charismatic and personable chicks, and even a little geometry. This book is an excellent beginning chapter book. It is easy to follow. Readers are immediately introduced to the characters and quickly drawn into a humorous mystery. Children will be easily attracted to the ridiculous interactions and situations. the vocabulary is pretty simple, and there is enough repetition that will make it easy for a struggling reader to catch on. The pattern and structure of the text lend itself for a perfect read-aloud book. It would be a story that children would not want to put down, but continue to read or listen to.As a third grade teacher, I see this as a book I want to have in my classroom. I am always looking for good chapter books - especially ones that my lower readers will be able to pick up and read independently. This will be a book that my children will read and eagerly share with others.I see this book later becoming a children's animated cartoon. I think the writing, the characters, as well as the cute illustrations have already allowed me to create an animated cartoon in my mind.

Colebank My daughter loves to read, but finding books with themes that fit her age but with a length that goes beyond what most children her age read at is always a challenge. This book was a perfect fit. She laughed at it and loved it. She hates mysteries (too scary or too confusing--remember, she's six!), but this one with the Scaredy Squirrel was right up her alley.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Dirt discovers a new shade of gray! By Dolores, a teacher The Chicken Squad is hilarious and Doreen Cronin, perhaps my favorite author for this age group, is a genius.J.J. Tully makes and appearance, but this adventure is a job for the "chicken squad". With teamwork and a minor assist from a squirrel, they manage to save the day.Expect to hear a burst of laughter every page or so. And on top of that, children will learn synonyms for big and scary AND what a rhombus looks like.

NEW EDITION, REVISED AND UPDATED Leadership and Self - Deception, The Arbinger Institute's first book, The Anatomy of Peace has become a worldwide phenomenon - not because of a media blitz, movie tie - in, or celebrity endorsement, but because readers have enthusiastically recommended it to colleagues, relatives, and friends. The Anatomy of Peace asks, What if conflicts at home, conflicts at work, and conflicts in the world stem from the same root cause? What if we systematically misunderstand that cause? And what if, as a result, we unwittingly perpetuate the very problems we think we are trying to solve? Through an intriguing story we learn how and why we contribute to the divisions and problems we blame on others and the surprising way that these problems can be solved. Yusuf al - Falah, an Arab, and Avi Rozen, a Jew, each lost his father at the hands of the other's ethnic cousins. The Anatomy of Peace is the story of how they came together, how they help warring parents and children come together, and how we too can find our way out of the struggles that weigh us down. This second edition includes new sections enabling readers to go deeper into the book's key concepts; access to free digital study and discussion guides; and information about The Reconciliation Project, a highly successful global peace initiative based on concepts in ''''The Anatomy of Peace''''.

The Anatomy of Peace (Second Edition): Resolving the Heart of Conflict, by The Arbinger Institute

From Publishers Weekly The premise of this follow-up to Leadership and Self-Deception is simple: people whose hearts are at peace do not wage war, whether they're heads of state or members of a family. In this semi-fictional narrative ("inspired by actual events") illustrating the principles of achieving peace, the setting is a two-day parent workshop at an Arizona-based wilderness camp for out-of-control teenagers, but the storyline is a mere setting for an instruction manual. Workshop facilitators Yusuf al-Falah, a Palestinian Arab whose father was killed by Israelis in 1948, and Avi Rozen, an Israeli Jew whose father died in the Yom Kippur War, use examples from their domestic lives and the history of their region to illustrate situations in which the normal and necessary routines of daily life can become fodder for conflict. Readers observe this through the eyes of one participant, a father whose business is in nearly as much trouble as his teenage son. The usefulness of the information conveyed here on how conflicts take root, spread and can be resolved more than compensates for the pedestrian writing. We were each given a copy of this book the night before our court appearance by a dear friend. He could see how much pain both of us were in and wanted desperately to help us. He had already attended The Arbinger Institutes training and had read all of their books; most recently, this book. He knew how powerful its message is to the right heart. There was a lot that transpired during the 18 hours preceding the court hearing. A lot of this book was read. Hearts were softened & changed and two prideful, selfish individuals became new people. I don't use this lightly when I say it helped facilitate a miracle in our lives. We have a long ways to go, but at least we will be traveling it together and we now have hope for ourselves, and for our marriage and "The Anatomy of Peace" has much to do with it.

One of those rare "EVERYONE NEEDS A COPY" books By Joanna Daneman I read this while taking a train to a meeting, and when I got back on the train, I re-read the entire book all over. I was absolutely blown away. The authors of the book, the Arbinger Institute, have discovered the secret to world peace--and to domestic tranquility in your marriage and family as well.Coming as I do from a turbulent family, I recognized the push-pull issues that make people enemies who should love each other. And I recognized when in my life I decided to have peace in my heart and when I chose to be at war in my heart instead--and what the results were. Here is a system of engaging with everyone you meet in order to have peaceful relations. The book starts with a story about a family taking their paroled drug-dealing son to a desert retreat and rehabilitation program run by an improbable pair of an Israeli and and Arab. The parents drop off the children and then spend a couple of days with the program therapists before leaving the kids behind. Suprise; the book is NOT about the desert survival experience of the kids; we only learn of this obliquely throughout the book. Instead, the parents learn how to deal with each other and their world with a peaceful heart. The system of teaching involves some parables, stories, charts and a pyramid starting at the top with "correction" but supported below with teaching, listening, and otherwise dealing lovingly with your fellow man.The philosophy of Martin Buber is some of the basis for these important teachings. Buber stated that people either dealt with each other as I-YOU or as I-IT. When people deal with others as "it", we get everything from the person who is yapping on a cell phone while they carelessly careen through a parking lot to wholesale slaughter of people for being the wrong religion or race. From Buber's teaching, we learn how peace in our hearts is when we deal with I-YOU and when we turn our hearts to war, we've turned them to I-IT.This is a most important book and I recommend that everyone get a copy of it and read it. And read it again. Your life will NOT be the same. It will be better.

It's the prequel to Leadership & Self Deception, and it continues to develop many of the same principles. In this book, however, they step away from the business atmosphere, and focus on changing yourself to effect change in relationships in the home, and between nations. I am confident that if everyone in the world read and understood the principles in this set of books, it would literally solve most all of the world's problems; problems at homes and with families, problems in the workplace, and problems between societies and governments. At the very least this book will change your perspective and change your life. It's due out in August, and I recommend it to everyone. [...]

One Thousand Things: learn your first words with Little Mouse, by Anna Kovecses

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—This visual encyclopedia introduces a variety of first words and concepts to preschool audiences. The content is organized into sections such as "First Things to Learn," "Things to Do with You," and "Things Around the World." Each spread shows a scene focused on a different theme with parts of the picture clearly labeled. Visually, the book works well, with all caps text that is large and easy to read. The digitally created illustrations are minimalistic and have an appealingly vintage feel. However, the organizational structure is not exactly intuitive. For example, "Things Around the World" includes pages about the seasons and weather, while "Things in Nature" contains a page called "What's in the Fruit Bowl?" Also, children will have difficulty distinguishing between the blue, light blue, and dark blue hues on the color spread. Despite the drawbacks, this book does have a lot to offer: the illustrations are eye-catching, and youngsters will enjoy searching for the mouse hidden on every page. VERDICT A serviceable addition for children discovering and exploring the world around them for the first time.—Kimberly Tolson, Medfield Public Library, MA

Review

"This book does have a lot to offer: the illustrations are eye-catching, and youngsters will enjoy searching for the mouse hidden on every page." - School Library Journal

"Familiar figures and concepts depicted in a simple graphic style invite very young children to catalog and identify many of the items they might encounter in their everyday worlds." - Kirkus Reviews

"A visual encyclopedia of things to spot and say with a difference, the pictures are strong, bold and dominate the page, the labels are clear and defined but it is not just about the learning, it comes with a game too, a little mouse to spot on every page! Compulsive and instructional fun, minimal and modern." - Armadillo

"To bill this book as a 'vocabulary builder' is to woefully underplay its hand. Study hard and this book will see you safely through nursery and in to reception as an assured four year old who can hold their own in the cut and thrust of classroom debate... the book is huggable, sniffable and strokable. The bright, digitally created images are easy on the eye, with kid and parent appeal and an air of comforting naivity. The clear font is helpful for early readers." - The Bookbag

"Help babies learn their first words with this visual encyclopedia. It's educational and adorable." - Glitter Guide

17 of 19 people found the following review helpful. retro-cute art gone wrong By harleycart This book is packed with sweet vintage-style illustrations using simple shapes and lovely colors. I can understand why adults would enjoy that aspect. It's cute. But as a tool for learning first words, it is ineffective. The illustrations are just not clear to young children. My preschoolers, who are old enough to know most of the words in this book (except "leek" and "radish" for example), were confused by some of the illustrations: they thought the tower was a rocket and the barn was a doghouse and the pickle was a cucumber, for example. Is that a peach or an apricot? A mango or an egg?The chapter categories don't add value and in fact add to the chaos. The first pages of "things in nature" are fruits and vegetables - I can't argue that they are found in nature, but kids don't really think of bananas as "things in nature." And why are seasons and weather categorized as "things around the world"? I thought "things around the world" would be more geographically interesting."What will you be when you grow up" is kind of disturbing. I can't even talk about it right now.An adorable mouse is "hiding" on every page, but finding him got old fast. He would be better served in a book with a plot.p.s. For teaching first words, DK has an excellent series of large board books, each called "Tabbed Board Books: My First ________" (words, colors, animals, home, etc), that expose toddlers to a broad vocabulary with clear photographs.

By aija holz this book is wonderful! the illustrations are simple but so so eye pleasing! labelled as a book for learning your first words it's exactly that! but i got it for my boy for his 3rd birthday and while he knows all the words in the book already, he is practicing his reading on the words. so it's versatile! it would also be great maybe for a kid of any age really learning english as a second language. this book is so good i kept getting it out of the cupboard to flip through the pages before i wrapped it for my birthday boy! i highly recommend it for kids of all ages really! and for the parents!

There's no rush, we just look at pictures - I can ask her the questions about the pictures and she can practice shapes, colors, parts of the body, and many basic words as we enjoy a little lap time cuddle and reading time together. Wonderful for toddlers/preschoolers with delightful illustrations. Highly recommend!

I knew Molly in high school and remember her as always of high moral character, always happy and fun to be around. I did not know her family but was certain that she came from a fine Christian home. When I began reading her book, I quickly found out why Molly was the type of person I had known previously. What a great family background she grew up in, as characterized in her book. Each chapter got better and better, and once I started reading the book, I finished it quickly, always looking forward to the next chapter. After each chapter, she wrote a thoughtful paragraph and a corresponding Bible verse, each very meaningful and thought-provoking.I liked the book so much that I purchased a dozen copies to give to friends. As soon as that supply is gone, I intend to purchase more. I sincerely recommend this book as one of the best I have ever read.Thank you, Molly, and best wishes always!

The author relates memories of her parents, her siblings and later stories about her own children. She deals with heart rending subjects, as well as humorous and inspirational ones. Walk with Molly Lemmons through the polio years, the dating years, the times of teens, the antics of pets, the blessings of a large family, and finally, the death of a parent. Any reader who has enjoyed "Chicken Soup for the Soul" will love "Kind of Heart." I recommend it!!

The stories are funny, sad, wise, and heart-warming. The author details her "trials" at the hands of parents who care; the pangs of young love; the warmth of a large immediate and extended family; the joy of partenthood. Far too few people - then and now - have the advantage of a happy and secure childhood. If you would like to share Ms. Lemmons', this is a wonderful book.

As a child, Janet Parsons Mackey witnessed her grandfather’s passion for progressive politics, civil rights, and the Russian Revolution. Lively debates on justice and politics were commonplace.

Then came the Red Scare and the oppressive paranoia of the McCarthy era. Silence replaced conversation and discussion for many in her family, distancing them from a grandfather who continued to express his views through meetings, speeches, and newspaper columns. E. Dudley Parsons was never complacent—and never silenced.

Things Get Rearranged represents author Parsons Mackey’s attempt to understand her grandfather, his values, and his passion for justice. Personal recollections mix with the man’s own writing to form a rich tapestry of his remarkable life.

Through her grandfather, Parsons Mackey first became aware of equal rights for people of color, the need for fair wages, free speech, and open debate. She sees his influence not only in her life but also in those of his great-grandchildren, who retain his interest in politics and Russia.

Join Parsons Mackey as she traces the complex transmission of ideas, values, and traditions through a multigenerational family, restoring her grandfather to his rightful place as a powerful influence on future generations.

The author has taken one of those challenging family members, her grandfather, and examined his influence, for good and for ill, on her and other members of her family, including her own children and grandchildren. She helps us understand and empathize with his passions, even when they are misguided, and to appreciate the strength of his character and his desire to make his life count for causes he believes are worthwhile. The author traces her own maturing perspective in relation to her grandfather, first portraying him through her childish eyes and eventually looking back on him as a mature adult. This is a fascinating study that reflects the political turmoil of our country, from the McCarthy Era to today's questions about electronic surveillance.

The other reason is that I share her fascination with Russia and its culture. This was a great memoir--portrayed some very moving personal history set against the context of national and world events. I learned a lot about US history as well.

Also my late husband spoke of the "pure" communism that his father liked probably as much as Janet's grandfather. I found it all very fascinating.

Delightful, insightful and simply FULL of ideas By Laura Crowley I read extensively, including many parenting books, and although I do nearly all of my reading from library books, I am very glad I purchased Raising Freethinkers, as I know I will be referring to it repeatedly over the years I'll be raising my children. As a nonreligious parent among a largely religious extended family, I both appreciated the sense of community I felt (I'm not the only one!), but also the sense of respectfulness for religious folks evident in the book's tone. All the chapters come from a place of deep regard for children's capacity to learn and think for themselves, and highlight how exciting an adventure it can be to raise kids free from indoctrination. I love the ideas for encouraging scientific reasoning and critical thinking, as well as ethical living.Since reading this book, we've modeled the scale of our solar system, read creation stories from around the world, found a way to support our daughter in her quandary with the Girl Scout pledge, discovered new ways to answer questions about death, found ways to handle interactions with religious family members, and uncovered a vast new list of kids' books we plan to read as a family. And this is just what I can remember off the top of my head. There are extensive resource lists and activity ideas at the end of each section.Raising Freethinkers is simply fantastic, and unlike anything else I've found out there. I most strongly recommend it.

I cannot say enough good things about Dale McGowan and the books he has written for nonreligious parents. This book didn't disappoint. The extensive list of resources and suggestions in Raising Freethinkers is invaluable. How to really give your child religious literacy without indoctrination, how to deal with death, handling the stages of moral development-it's all here. This and Parenting Beyond Belief will now be in every baby shower gift I buy for my nonreligious friends.

Erickson Although the primary target for this book is atheist or secular humanist parents, I do not fall into that category, but still found this book very valuable. I consider myself 'spiritual but not religious', and therefore am confronting many of the same themes as secular parents, in terms of trying to help my children navigate the social and cultural forces often tied to religion, and trying to build a sense of community and family rituals without organized religion as a guide. This book offers lots of parent questions, exercises, practical advice, and resources for fostering religious literacy, developing an ethical foundation not tied to religion, dealing with relatives and friends with traditional religious beliefs, and developing family rituals and frameworks for helping kids deal with the life passages and death outside of a conventional religious framework. It is not a dogmatic atheist book, and is more oriented around developing tolerance and curiousity regarding religion and spiritual issues, so I was very comfortable with most of it.In addition to the topics already mentioned, I liked the first 'Inquiring Mind' chapter, which I think any parent should read, in order to more deeply consider the ramifications of feeding your kids your own answers to life questions, and how to best foster a sense of curiosity and 'freethinking' in them. I did have issues with some of the themes and exercises that seemed to equate freethinking automatically with rationality or current scientific thinking, as for me these too have their limitations, but I think the message on those can be tweaked. So, if you are grappling with unconventional spiritual beliefs, and how to parent your child within those, and/or how to best prepare them for dealing with a religious society, this book is worth a look.

Beards, brothers, and bikers! Oh my!

Identical twins Beau and Duane Winston might share the same devastatingly handsome face, but where Beau is outgoing and sociable, Duane is broody and reserved. This is why Jessica James, recent college graduate and perpetual level-headed good girl, has been in naïve and unhealthy infatuation with Beau Winston for most of her life. His friendly smiles make her tongue-tied and weak-kneed, and she's never been able to move beyond her childhood crush. Whereas Duane and Jessica have always been adversaries. She can't stand him, and she's pretty sure he can't stand the sight of her....

But after a case of mistaken identity, Jessica finds herself in a massive confusion kerfuffle. She has spent her whole life paralyzed by the fantasy of Beau and her assumptions of Duane's disdain; therefore she's unprepared for the reality that is Duane's insatiable interest, as well as his hot hands and hot mouth and hotter looks. Not helping Jessica's muddled mind and good girl sensibilities, Duane seems to have gotten himself in trouble with the local biker gang, the Iron Order.

Certainly, Beau's magic spell is broken. Yet when Jessica finds herself drawn to the man who was always her adversary, now more dangerous than ever, how much of her level-headed heart is she willing to risk?

A Great New Series By Jenn I had to read this book slowly and not because it required it but because my schedule of travel, school and home required that I not read it like I wished and like it called for me too. Though I think now the forced slow down of reading it was a blessing because I got to savor it. For over 2 weeks I got to read about Duane and Jessica and their love and it was amazing. This book reads quickly, so you don’t even realize how much of it you have read until you look down at the page number/percentage.This book like all Penny books gives you something unique. There is humor, light heartedness, depth and a little education. I love that about Penny Reid’s books. Even more so I love that each character is unique and not a copy of another from past stories or even within the same book. The one similarity I find in her characters is between the female leads and that is this:They are SMARTThey are STRONGThey are REALI love that fact and it always leaves me coming back for more. This book is the first in a spin off series from her Knitting in the City Series and all began because of book #4 in KitC, Beauty and the Mustache. It was there we were first introduced to the Tennessee brothers known as the Winston brothers. They are all bearded and unique in their own way (I can’t wait for Cleatus’s book). These boys might be raised in the Tennessee hills but they are anything but hillbillies. They are intelligent, soulful, respectful men and reading about them is an amazing adventure. So what does this book give you? Sexy Gandalf, Truth or Dare, Biker troubles, sweetness, honesty, family drama and family love, Steam and an appreciation for muscle cars, good men, good women and sadly some not so nice people (like the real world).Truth of Beard was a home run for me and I am now eager more than ever to read more about the Winston brothers and to find out more about this family.

One can trust Penny Reid to be brave enough to deviate so far from the usual darkly handsome hero****RED HEADED & BEARDED HERO*** whoop!!!!Positives:1. Loved Duane's description. His manly career (a man who works with his hands doing real herd labour **swoon**) - makes a change from the suited business types or the biker criminal types.2. Loved the sample - the way Jess hates Duane but mistakenly assumes he is his twin was hot.3. Loved Jess's LOTR obsession. Who wouldn't want to be Gandalf?----------------------------------------------Negatives1. SURPLUS of INNER MONOLOGUES - it's tedious reading about a person's every emotional feeling.2. Jess was a quirky LOTR-fan interesting character to begin with but transforms into your typical blonde beautiful, angst-y hormonal silly cliché after the sample finishes.3. Too much swooning and insta-lust.4. They fell in love without any build-up. At the beginning she hates him with a passion - then the next day loves him with a passion (and constantly wants to get into his pants).5. Surplus of characters and subplots that focused on setting the next set of books for the series that that it compromised the plot.6. The plot wasn't anything special and dragged. I skipped to the end.7. I loved Duane he's a redhead and has a beard - BUT - his constant emotion sharing, angst over Jess etc was off-putting. He was emasculated t times.Penny's other hero's generally tend to be reserved.8. Chemistry sizzles out a few pages after the sample.9. Most of the times - we are told how they feel - but I didn't feel the connection.10. Didn't like the scene at the race where Jess goes crazy in lust for Duane (it happens so quickly) to the point she's acting like a race bunny - it didn't make sense and just didn't add to the book.----------------------------------------------Not a bad book, but not as good as Penny Reid's first book. I think if the:(i)love-hate relationship continued past the sample;(ii) a slow-build-up of emotions rather than insta-love/lust;(iii) the focus was on Jess and Duane (rather than setting the next set of the series); and(iv) there was more banter, chemistry, quirkiness and plotit would have scored a 5* from me.

But being back in Green Valley means having to cross paths with the Winston brother again, especially Beau, who renders her completely speechless. But when she finds out that she was actually making out with his twin Duane Winston - who, incidentally, she can't stand - things change. Considerably. What I loved about this book:The wonderful male MCThe Winston brotherPenny Reid's humor-laden writingWhat I felt needed improvement:The story was missing an epilogueThe female MC was a bit wishy-washyThe story stalled after the 50-60% markHaving read a couple of Penny Reid books so far, I knew I wanted to give Truth Or Beard a chance, let alone for the cheesy cover, which, along with the title made it sound quite intriguing."I wondered if we would disagree about the color of the sky on our date, fall into our old habit of debating and making mountains out of molehills. The possibility was exciting."From the first page on, I fell in love with Penny Reid's writing style. It was extremely funny (the main characters have a brand of self-deprecation that is just too good to be true) and at the same time, it was hot. I was extremely giddy when reading this book and in the beginning, there wasn't a single page that could get a chuckle out of me. The relationship between Duane and Jessica was special, since they hated each other being kids, and now that they bump into each other again, they have this incredibly hot mutual attraction to each other, it's insane. But, you know, given the fact that they still have the urge to pick on each other all the time, there is some wonderful (and funny) chemistry between them."Did I want to kiss the hell out of him? Yes, I did. Did I want to wrap his banana and let him have his way with my coconuts? Yes. I wanted that to happen."I absolutely loved Duane. I am not into beards, or redheads, but I would have liked to see him in the flesh. He was the perfect male MC for this book: grumpy and reserved on the outside, yet a real gentleman when you get to know him. I was less impressed with Jessica just because - despite all her efforts - she really did seem like a flake. There's nothing wrong with wanting to explore the world, but it was like she was talking the talking more than she would walk the walk - she's basically living off her parents until she has enough money to travel...And then, for some reason, around the 50% mark, the book started stalling, or at least moving forward extremely slowly. From then on, it took me ages to finish Truth Or Beard . The book revolves around two main intrigues (the main characters relationship and Duane's trouble with a local biker gang), and they just suddenly become boring, even though they get tied up quite nicely in the end.In the end, I was a bit disappointed that there were a couple of things in this story that just didn't add up. Actually, it's not that they didn't add up, it's more that some things were left with loose ends at the end of the story. Let's take for example the story around Jessica's aunt. It's not going to spoil anything when I tell you that it turns out her aunt is actually her mother. It's not going to spoil anything because that piece of information comes up in the story but has absolutely no impact on it whatsoever. And than there's this story around the biker guy, Repo, who I am sure is somehow related to Jessica, but the matter is only being hinted at, and not picked up. And yeah... there was just no real epilogue here, so this was a major disappointment. But thankfully, there was one aspect of the book I enjoyed the heck out: I loved the side characters. Well, the Winston Brothers, that is! They were all incredibly adorable and charming, and added a whole lot of flair to the book. I can't wait to hear Beau's story, because he is the corny and foodie one! At the end of the book, we get a sneak peak at the next book in the series, which will be Jethro's story. But again, this yielded disappointment. I didn't mind reading about Jethro next, but I was convinced he was pining after Claire (Jessica's friend), and that the story revolved around that.Anyway, I'll be giving this one a try (it's called Grin And Beard It ) hoping it will have the same spirit and humour and that it is going to be a little more polished where side stories are concerned. Now that would make it perfect.

Introducing HILO—the funny, New York Times Bestselling, full-color new middle-grade graphic novel series that Bone creator Jeff Smith calls “delightful.”   D.J. and his friend Gina are totally normal kids. But that was before a mysterious boy came crashing down from the sky! Hilo doesn’t know where he came from, or what he’s doing on Earth. (Or why going to school in only your underwear is a bad idea!) . . . But what if Hilo wasn’t the only thing to fall to our planet? Can the trio unlock the secrets of his past? Can Hilo survive a day at school? And are D.J. and Gina ready to save the world?   HILO is Calvin and Hobbes meets Big Nate and is just right for fans of Bone and comic books as well as laugh-out-loud school adventures like Jedi Academy and Wimpy Kid!   Praise for HILO“More giant robotic ants and people going 'Aaaah!' than in the complete works of Jane Austen”—Neil Gaiman, bestselling author“Every kid would love a pal like HILO, and every kid will love this book!” —Lincoln Peirce, bestselling author of the Big Nate series“HILO is delightful, silly, tender, and most importantly: funny.” —Jeff Smith, bestselling author of the Bone series"Fast paced, furiously funny, and will have kids waiting on the edge of their seats for more."—Jeffrey Brown, bestselling author of Jedi Academy"I LOVE this book. And I'm not the only one. My 11-year old son loved it. And when my 7-year old daughter saw it, she picked it up and loved it too. Hilo is alive, actionpacked...and amazing fun. Not since Bone have I been this excited to see the launch of a series."—Brad Meltzer, bestselling author The Fifth Assassin, Host The History Channel’s Decoded"HILO is loads of slapstick fun with a touch of tenderness that kids will love."--Dan Santat, Caldecott Medal Winner"High energy and HILARIOUS!"--Gene Luen Yang, winner of the Printz and Eisner Awards, two time National Book Award Finalist"A perfect book for any kid who ever needed a friend and then had one with superpowers fall from space.” —Seth Meyers, actor, comedian and writer* "Universally appealing. A wholeheartedly weird and wonderful tale of friendship, acceptance, and robots."—Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review * "Diverse characters, good friends, and humorous dialogue coupled with colorful illustrations and plenty of action makes this a must-have."—School Library Journal, Starred Review"The most enjoyable hero to hit the library shelves in years. Good clean laser-beams-coming-outta-your-hands fun for the whole family."—http://blogs.slj.com/afuse8production/ “HILO kept me flipping pages with its compelling mix of modern language and old-fashioned charm. There are some big themes at play here—loyalty, outsiderdom and the tyranny of technology—but, thanks to Winick's usual dose of humor and action, kids may find it suitable for their grownups.”—Armistead Maupin, bestselling author Tales Of The City series, The Night Listener.

Hilo Book 1: The Boy Who Crashed to Earth, by Judd Winick

From School Library Journal Gr 2–5—Daniel Jackson Lim, aka DJ, is an ordinary boy in a family of overachievers. He meets Hilo, a robot boy who fell to Earth from space and doesn't know where he came from or what he is doing on this planet. DJ, along with his best friend, Gina, help Hilo unlock the secrets of his past and stop the destruction of the planet. The first installment in this graphic novel series is a fast-paced adventure that is beautifully illustrated in full color and aimed at readers who would love to have a superhero friend. Captivating, silly, tender, and, most importantly, funny, this title will be popular with all readers—from reluctant to avid. The strength of friendship and cooperation is a theme throughout. With a cliff-hanger ending, the book will have kids eager for the sequel. VERDICT Diverse characters, good friends, and humorous dialogue coupled with colorful illustrations and plenty of action make this a must-have for all children's graphic novel collections.—Paula Huddy, The Blake School-Highcroft Campus, Wayzata, MN

Review "A wholeheartedly weird and wonderful tale of friendship, acceptance, and robots."—Kirkus Reviews starred review"Diverse characters, good friends, and humorous dialogue coupled with colorful illustrations and plenty of action makes this a must-have for all children’s graphic novel collections." —School Library Journal starred review“This is lively and entertaining adventure with enough risk to give it heft and plenty of solid friendship to keep readers buoyed… Lush, bright colors and a freewheeling approach to panels create an immersive environment: it’s clear that this is art, and it’s also clear that the art is running the show, not the panels or even the words. Readers will likely find it a tough wait for the next volume to come along.”—Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books starred review

Tresca At first glance I didn't realize HILO was a comic book, but that just made it all the more fun when I sprung it on my seven-year-old son. To my surprise, my five-year-old daughter loves it too -- and she's just learning to read! We're still reading it every few nights.Nearly everything about the plot is tailor-made for kids: In a family of overachievers, D.J. is notable for being ordinary. Lonely after his friend Gina moves away, D.J. drifts aimlessly through school until HILO falls to Earth. Goofy, enthusiastic (he thinks rice and milk is "OUTSTANDING!"), and utterly dependent on D.J., HILO brings out the best in his new Earth friend who finds he is far more extraordinary than he ever dreamed. On its surface, HILO is basically Starman for kids. It's every fish-out-of-water alien trope crammed into one comic. But it doesn't matter, because Judd Winick's comic timing (every time someone burps, and HILO burps a lot, D.J. yells "repeat business!"), his art style, and his masterful dialogue captures little kids and their secret world of tragedy and adventure. HILO manages to be both whimsical and serious -- the alien dangers are real, and HILO openly admits his fear -- but all three friends rise above their challenges to become better people. And that's what makes this graphic novel simply outstanding. An awesome comic that needs to be a movie.

The characters are portrayed with tons of personality, and the action scenes are filled with energy. The text is easy to read, flows well and is the perfect complement to the graphics. This story opens with action, and never quits. Every young reader will be able to relate to DJ, a young boy who doesn't feel like he's good at anything, and who just so happens to be stuck in a family of overachievers. Heck, I could relate to DJ! He's the perfect person to find HiLo, a boy with mysterious origins and a mysterious purpose. It doesn't take long for this story about action and aliens to turn into a story about friendship and finding your strength. This book handles it all with nary a misstep. I look at quite a few graphic novels every year, and seldom do I find one that is so entirely kid friendly. So many new works of graphic fiction lose themselves in art that is too pretentious, and stories that are far too esoteric for children. This one keeps its audience squarely in mind and tells a story that is entertaining and full of heart. I'm so glad that this is just book 1, and I look forward to the continuing adventures of DJ and HiLo.

By Vanayssa Somers For lovers of romance of any kind, but particularly cowboy-type romance, Elle Marlow is at the top of her game. Her love of cowboys, the west, horses, and hunky men is impossible to miss…The hero of this book, Where Have All the Cowboys Gone? is typical Marlow dreamstuff. Tall, rugged, equally delicious whether shaven or smooth-skinned and smelling of fresh soap…hey, let me wash your back there, Hayden…so in love with his beautiful, movie actress, horse-loving, heroine, that even when she takes off and leaves after hearing some dirty rumors about her sweetie, even though he’s so mad he could chew nails, (hey, he’s a cowboy) he still stares out at the stormy sky hoping he’ll see her coming back down the road…and does he? Does he? You’ll have to read it to find out! Don’t miss this one, it will fill those evening hours and then some.

It has all the elements of romance a strong backstory and characters that jump off the page. As a life long horsewoman I enjoy reading real stories involving horses and horsemanship which the author obviously has personal knowledge.. Elle's hero is strong and gentle a believable character in these days of worthless "Fifty Shades of Grey" degenerates. I would love to see this on the screen!

Well written, with a plot that keeps the pages turning, you simply can't go wrong! Excellent knowledge of horses, cowboys, and ranches just adds to the excitement! Where have the All the Cowboys Gone is my 3rd or 4th read by Elle and I haven't been disappointed yet! ~Rae
