Über die Autorin: 1881 im bairischen Glonn als uneheliches Kind geboren, verbringt Lena Christ ihre ersten Lebensjahre unbeschwert bei ihrem Großvater. Später erfährt sie die Gefühlskälte und andauernde brutale Mißhandlungen ihrer Mutter und fühlt sich zunehmend als Überflüssige. Nach dem Tod des geliebten Großvaters entflieht sie der häuslichen Situation 1898 in das Kloster Ursberg, das sie kurz darauf enttäuscht und verzweifelt wieder verlässt. Nach einem ersten gescheiterten Selbstmordversuch arbeitet sie als Köchin und heiratet den Buchhalter Anton Leix. Die Ehe scheitert, Lena erkrankt und ihre Töchter kommen in ein Kinderheim. Nur mühsam hält sie sich durch Schreibarbeiten über Wasser bis sie so 1911 den Schriftsteller Peter Jerusalem (der seinen Namen 1933 in Peter Benedix ändert) kennenlernt und 1912 heiratet. Er veranlaßt sie zur Niederschrift ihrer Lebensgeschichte, die 1912 als Erinnerungen einer Überflüssigen erscheinen jedoch nur geringe Beachtung finden. Auch die Lausdirndlgeschichten, in denen Ludwig Thoma eine plumpe Nachahmung seiner Lausbubengeschichten sieht, und der 1914 erscheinende Roman Mathias Bichler finden zu Lebzeiten wenig Beachtung beim Publikum. Die Rumplhanni, die zunächst als Drama in drei Aufzügen entsteht, dann aber auf den Rat von Peter Jerusalem zum Roman umgearbeitet wird, erscheint im Herbst 1916. Sie heiratete Benedix und schrieb in schneller Folge weitere Werke; gegen Ende des Krieges löste sie sich von ihrem Mann, erkrankte an Tuberkulose, geriet in wirtschaftliche Schwierigkeiten, versuchte durch das ungeschickte Fälschen von Bildern zu Geld zu kommen. Die Autorin, Lena Christ, hatte das seltene Talent, mit wenigen Strichen eine ganze Welt zu zeichnen, intensiv und detailfreudig. Die Kindheit bei den Großeltern im oberbayrischen Glonn, das harte Leben als Wirtstochter in der Münchner Vorstadt, die Bigotterie der Klosterschule oder die Schrecken ihrer Ehe mit einem Alkoholiker, alles verdichtet sich vor des Lesers Augen zu einprägsamen Bildern, die man nicht mehr aus dem Kopf bekommt. Selten wurde das Leben der "kleinen Leute" authentischer beschrieben.Man kommt nicht los von dem Buch und hält es doch kaum aus weiterzulesen: Zu grausam ist das Schicksal des aufgeweckten kleinen Mädchens, das nach den ersten idyllischen Jahren bei den Großeltern in eine lieblose Welt versetzt wird und schlimmsten Misshandlungen durch die Mutter ausgesetzt ist. Und auch die Flucht in die Ehe entpuppt sich nur zu bald als weiteres Fiasko.Dieser autobiographische Roman, Lena Christs Erstling, und ihre weiteren Werke machten sie bald bekannt; ihr Name wurde in einem Atemzug mit dem Ludwig Thomas genannt. Es ist bedauerlich, dass später ihr Werk jahrzehntelang nur unter Kennern bekannt war; umso erfreulicher, dass es nun wieder allgemein zugänglich wird.Schließlich war Lena Christ alles andere als eine "Überflüssige", sondern ein Klassiker nicht nur der bayrischen Literatur.

By Kevin Killian I like funny things, and when I was a boy it was a commonplace among my family that there had never been a man funny as the "incomparable Max." His plots and sentences were endlessly quoted and even the names of his characters were so amusing one had only to be whispered and the entire household joined in raucous laughter. His novel Zuleika Dobson, and his volumes of short stories Seven Men and Two Others, and A Christmas Garland (parodies of Edwardian writers, each one set at Christmastime), may I suppose live on in the history of writing, and I know people today, even young people, who enjoy them no end. And appreciation for his famous caricatures seems to be ever on the increase, particularly with the internet where many of them are widely seen by people from all over the world.But then there's a book like AND EVEN NOW, first published in 1920, a collection of essays and memoirs. Once it sparkled like champagne, now it's, well, flat. Some of it is unfortunately dated, but these pieces do not seem appreciably worse than those that have not dated a jot, for all of them share the same essence, the flavor of having been written by a man who loves the sound of his own voice and thinks he's the cat's pajamas. My students rebelled when I asked them to read the Beerbohm classic, "Going Out for a Walk." It is filled with the wit and paradox we expect from Beerbohm--the thing turns into a tremendous peroration about why walks are horrible and ends up, "I will never go out for a walk." Very Fran Lebowitz, right? Another level of depth is added by Beerbohm's frequent resort to misty memories of a long time ago, before tax exile in Rapallo and before modern ways made society boring. The first essay in "And Even Now" (you can hear the figure of time passing in the title) is called, "A Relic." He's the relic in one sense, but basically he unpacks an old case and finds a scrap of writing in his own hand--a single sentence. "Down below, the sea rustled to and fro over the shingle." From that sentence a whole seacastle of memory instantly grows and closes over the mind of the old man--a structure of feeling, the memory of having written a great sentence and needing something the set it off, needing a plot to bring up the pathos. It is clever and it is moving, but funny it's not.Beerbohm is more modernist than he is amusing. I think nowadays people want a David Sedaris to show them the funny side of life. Beerbohm's curiosities repel, often as not, and his position as a selfstyled "Tory anarchist" is a little bit on the Sarah Palin side. I wish they would make a movie about him like the KING'S SPEECH movie, showing how he helped George VI prepare for invasion by Germany by returning from Rapallo and murmuring nonsense into his ear to lift up the beleaguered monarch's fancy. Colin Firth can continue to play George VI, but I think we need Ian McKellen to gain about seventy-five pounds and play the hell out of Max Beerbohm, the necessary man.

However, this edition is VERY hard to read (like too many other books from CreateSpace). The type is much too small for the length of the lines. With larger type, wider margins, and shorter lines (which means the book will have more pages), this book could be a pleasure to read. As for the book itself, I love Max Beerbohm's essays, especially "William and Mary."

Too Much Heaven: Volume 3: The DeLaine Reynolds Journey, by SaDonna Rogers

From the Author "Too Much Heaven" is the third installment of a multi-volume series about growing up, life, love, dysfunctional families as well as redemption.  This story follows a young, DeLaine Reynolds  after a massive tornado destroyed her hometown of Wichita Falls, TX in 1979 and the series will conclude when she is grown and a grandmother.  The series is currently set to have 9 volumes at this time.  The first novel in the series is "Dust In The Wind" and the second is "Still".  This is a great story to follow as you see the way DeLaine learns about love, friendship, life and how to survive amidst it all.  Set in the late 1970's and into the new decade of the '80's, DeLaine is full of the typical teenage angst, only her life is a bit more complicated due to family dysfunction, abusive family members and beginning all over again after the tornado of 'Terrible Tuesday' completely claimed everything she'd ever known about life.  A coming of age story that will transport you to the 1970's and your own teenage years whether they happened back then or in another era...it is a story about life lessons and being a survivor no matter how you grow up!

About the Author SaDonna Rogers is a survivor of the actual tornado that is the catalyst for DeLaine's story.  'Terrible Tuesday', April 10, 1979 is a day no one who ever lived in Wichita Falls, TX will ever forget.  The tornado completely decimated over half of the city.  Set among the reconstruction period of the first year, the series is inspired by actual events.  Ms. Rogers now lives in Goliad, TX with a menagerie of dogs and cats who found their way to her home.  She has one grown son and two grandchildren.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I absolutely loved the third installment By Linda G. Espinosa I absolutely loved the third installment, in DeLaine's life. The author easily brings the reader into the story. It is just like walking along with DeLaine through her journey. The reader can feel the depths of the struggles she endures. I found myself, always pulling for her, at each twist and turn. Another great book, that I couldn't put down. This author kept me up late into the night to finish this book.

I love how the author has been able to engage her readers in such a way that they feel like they are part of the story. Eace Bee was a promising young student hoping to become an architect or a rapper when, nearing the end of high school, he was, by his own account, struck down by crippling mental illness. Diagnosed as a severe paranoid schizophrenic, he has for 20-plus years struggled with mood swings that can make him seem menacing, voices from animate and inanimate objects that only he can hear, and behavior patterns that have put him into hospitals again and again. His propensity for not taking his meds hasn't helped. In this unusual book edited by Pickles, Eace; his mother, Priscilla Bee; and his sister, Honey Bee, all debut authors, tell their intimate story of the sheer horror and stigma of mental illness. Priscilla-a teacher and school administrator and a member of the National Alliance on Mental Illness-adds numerous recommendations to the narrative. She calls for substantial increases in public spending to train mental health professionals, teachers, counselors, administrators, police, and others who come in contact with mentally ill or at-risk young people. Stronger emphasis is needed, she says, on job programs and early intervention that goes beyond merely funneling students into special education curriculums. For Eace, she says, what is so obviously required is long-term comprehensive care in an open and supportive environment. But her search for such a program has yielded disappointing results. Instead, the care Eace receives has been episodic, disjointed, not especially compassionate, and too often complicated by bureaucratic quagmires. Her point that the historic malady of racism has infected treatment of the mentally ill is well made. Hartwig Solid book for how to harness the power of creativity and cultivate it into innovative solutions for challenging problems. I wholeheartedly agree with his statement: "It might seem counterintuitive to talk about attaching structure and processes to something that, by its very nature, tends to be free-spirited and requires an uninhibited environment to thrive. However, creativity must be managed effectively if you are going to capture value." Throughout the book, Stone lays out how to systematically cultivate innovation - examining creativity, leadership and followership processes, organizational design, ethics, and more.And there are many nuggets of great truth beyond innovation throughout the book, like this one in the conclusion of the leadership chapter: "Embrace a definition of leadership. If it’s the one that’s presented here, great. If not, find one that works for you, but make sure it’s comprehensive, all-encompassing, and not self-serving."I would have liked to see more original research, as the book mainly reads as a long review of the literature, with the author stating his conclusions on the result of what he's read from others. As such, I did not find a lot that was "new" in the book, but it is a nicely laid-out, comprehensive treatment of the how organizations can cultivate innovation and thereby build a strong organization.

The dynamics and chemistry between Anna and Finn was very hot. They first met when she arrived for a family vacation, he took her by surprise while she was photographing sighs on her way to meet her mother. Anna never suspected that he was the son of the man who her mother was living with, still there was something about him that drew her to him and he to her. They eventually begin a secret relationship because of their parents. They are getting closer every day, and she is the only one that he has really opened up to, she gets to see the real Finn. One day everything blows up and the sons and daughters of John and Robin leave to live their own lives. In this reviewers opinion this is a must read book. I also recommend the first two in this series. I never tell spoilers, as that ruins the book for others who haven't read it yet. I wish there was another book in this series. I am going to miss them and what happens next. If I could give it more than five stars I would, to me it is a ten star book. Ms.Master always delivers when she writes.

I loved the fact that Anna and Finn decided to not play games and be honest with each other right from the start. I also liked the interactions with the other siblings and getting all sides of the "vacation". I wish the ending would have looked a little further into the future. It kept my attention and I didn't want to put it down.Colleen, I loved this series but I must say that I am so curious as to what happens with these three couples. Do they all get married? Do they all have kids? Can we get a novella with a look into their future??I highly recommend that everyone read about the Hawthorne boys. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Finn is the son of the man her mother has been staying with, and Anna can't resist him. Anna and her sisters are devestated when her mother tells them she is selling the house they grew up in, and they leave Montana. Anna leaves with Finn and finds herself living with him in Portland. They haven't heard the last from their parents, and soon have news they never wanted to hear. Sizzling hot conclusion to a fantastic series, I loved these books!I received this ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

It contains outdated information, unfounded statements, sex bias, typos and information that is just plain common sense at the most basic level. information. There is no research or references included or behind this book. There is no bio for the author, no information on who she where her information came from. Sadly, it is not worth my time or trouble to send it back for a refund. But, if you are going through a divorce, DO NOT CHOSE THIS BOOK, it contains no helpful financial or legal advice. Further, some of the information is just plain WRONG!

Valuable advice By Filomena Fabry My divorce wasn't an easy task or happy event of my life, but without the valuable advice and help of this great guide I would be today in a much worse situation emotionally, not to say financially, but this guide helped a lot to reconstruct my life back, it tells you what to expect in every step of the process and the best way to proceed.

I wasn't the stunning and ever-happy beauty my husband fell in love with.He told me that he'd lost his sunshine, and that he couldn't live like this anymore...There is probably no book that is able to cover every possible situation, and I understand that.However, the advice given in this book was just common sense for me...I had never yelled, or screamed, or cursed at my husband during our entire relationship. I'm just not that kind of person...I didn't bad-mouth him, or tried to "make him pay" for the pain and heartache he caused.Starting to date again was not on my mind at all, and especially not to get back at my ex...Anyway; I read through this book in one hour, and when I was done I didn't feel that I had learned anything new or that it made things clearer for me.I am happy for everyone this book really helped; I should have saved the money for a Starbucks Latte Macchiato...

By CK Wise Up: Be The Solution is a must read for all parents who want their children to meet with success in the school setting. As a seasoned school psychologist and mother of twins, I truly understand the important role that parents play in the educational process. As a result, I feel compelled to bring to your attention the power of this book. Yes, as parents we expect great teachers and great leaders for our children. Each summer we wait patiently and hope that our children get the “best” teacher. Truth is, that is often out of our control. This book provides insight as to how to take control! Dr. Casale holds teachers, school leaders, and parents equally accountable. Now how about that??? His no nonsense delivery helps parents to reflect on their performance, and modify that which IS within their control. Parents can check their own educational leadership using the, all encompassing, “parent” report card! Truly, parents can get a “grade” based on their effectiveness. Now imagine showing your kids this grade! Many parents will say they are “actively” involved with regard to their children‘s education, and that may be so; however, this book provides even the best “active” parents with innovative guidance. As a school psychologist, I particularly respect the information provided on Learning Standards, creating a Mission Statement, Parent/Teacher Collaboration, Communication, and Homework. I also really appreciate the guidance Dr. Casale shared with regard to participating in effective teacher conference, and children and electronics….but don’t get me going on the latter! I encourage you to read and take note of Dr. Casale’s recommendations. In sum, this book provides a template for parents to maximize their children’s educational experience by educating the educators in the home…..the parents!

This book is a must have for every parent and also makes an excellent gift for future parents By Claudia Mann The title says it all "Wise Up and Be the Solution." This book is a must read for parents and parents-to-be alike. Preparation can avoid a lot of headache in the process of raising a child. This is just what this book does! It prepares the reader for "the road ahead" with their precious little ones. In this book, Dr. Casale covers a wide range of topics about how to raise and nurture a child responsibly. From attitude, safety and security, the concept of discipline at home and in school, ideas on how to make the long summer months worthwhile, to the impact of video games (just to name a view of the topics), the author gives expert advice on how to handle about any issue that can occur in the life of a family with children.This book is a must have for every parent and also makes an excellent gift for future parents. Therefore, I ordered five copies of the book. I kept one copy for myself, two of the copies I gave to my own children, and the other two copies are ready to be given to future parents in my family. Every parent can learn how to "Be the Solution" in their child's education, and Dr. Casale's book truly is an asset to every home library.

Great ideas about what your role should be By Tiffany F Merritt I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book and am providing my honest opinions.I think this book has some very practical nuts-and-bolts advice for parents as we navigate the increasingly complicated social world with our kids in school. I think what I like best about this book is different (and unfortunately, common) problems we might encounter (safety concerns, bullying, etc) and some specific ideas for the role of the child, the role of the parents, and the role of the school for handling these situations.This isn't a book to help parents think through, for example, if private, public, or homeschooling is the way to go (an issue I wrestle with). But again, it does offer concrete ideas for what your involvement should be in ensuring that the educational environment is a positive one for you child.

Joe couldn't have written a more perfect story for children. While my daughter is under two, she still loves the images and listening to the story. I've sent books to several family and friends, and all of them love the story. I can't wait for the next book Joe writes in the series!

Thorn is like nothing I have read before. This is not your typical forbidden romance. It's content is disturbing, thought provoking and emotive. I found myself empathic and thinking what would I do?? It did not feel like fiction.... It was so realistic, it could have been a true life story. The experiences and emotions the characters went through felt so REAL. Liv's writing style is not only unique, it's poetic and descriptive. I found myself seduced by her profound words. The vivid details in which she writes had me mesmerized. I was transported into the world of her characters... I was able to smell, see, taste and FEEL, everything she described! This isn't a sweet romantic book... it's very RAW. Everyday people dealing with insurmountable grief, despair and tragedy. Two lost souls who found each other, when they needed each other the most. A troubled 18 year old boy and a broken 30 year old woman. They gave each other what they both needed so desperately, HOPE... Things get complicated and lines get blurred, but who are we to judge?This book had it's share of sadness but it's not overwhelming. It is a story that will stay with you forever and is so worth the ride....Some people come into our lives for just a moment, while others stay for a life time.... is one more important than the other?? No, not if they play a significant roll.

I also strongly dislike romance books where very bad things happen to people and it destroys their lives. That is also this story and it had the most horrible thing that can happen to parents, a death of their child. Despite those things this is a very good, well written story. I cannot even say I enjoyed reading it because I didn't but it left a lasting impression. I read too many books and most just blend together. This is one that I will not forget.
