By C Hegle Every midwesterner has a family story. Most of them begin in the mid or late 1800's and involve an ethnic european resettlement to a small piece of farmland in Minnesota or the Dakotas. From there, some farms are lost or abandoned, but some survive and even flourish. All required incredible hard work and courage. This book is a wonderful telling of that story by the daughters of a successful family farmer, and includes their active participation in the farming process back when girls and women often did the work if there were no men, but were rarely recognized or written about. One of the authors is a retired journalist, and has trimmed a family saga down to a short and readable book that includes just enough historic pictures to give life to this farm family and the techniques used through the life of the land. Reading this book brought back long forgotten memories of the simplicity of small town life as a child in Minnesota. A great gift for any former or current small farming town inhabitant. Excellent bibliography.

By Joanne Music This was my second purchase of Under Minnesota Skies as it is a book I wanted to share. It is the kind of story that many people will enjoy reading. The best part is how well it is written. It is interesting, inspirational, entertaining and very pleasing to read. It will bring back childhood memories. You will also learn the unique and special Hondl family, multi-general story. It's history written in a most pleasing reading style. When I get one of the copies back it will go in a "Little Library". Who knows how many readers will enjoy it!

We can all relate and be inspired to discover our own familial history.It also gives us great insight into the lives of the American farmer and respect for the lives they live to provide us with the basic necessities. They truly are the backbone of our country.

Lary Crews has not only written novels himself but has also taught the subject and in this book his expertise shows. He covers everything one would expect: plotting, characterisation, dialogue, style, etc. I found his ‘Make Sure’ checklist very helpful. I’d recommend this book to any novelist keen to hone their skills and have no hesitation in giving it five stars.I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A Must-Read for the Budding Novelist By Hypnotist 101 As a successful non-fiction author, I have been trying to make the crossover to fiction for years, and I've read a heap of books on the Novelist's Craft. This is far-and-away the most useful and informative of the lot. Lary Crews' style is no-nonsense ("do this, don't do that") and tremendously well-organised in a sequence that makes perfect sense. Without 'spoiling the plot', two things I learned in the first half hour; Write a Secret Draft first, and let the characters write the story (don't waste time on outlining) - gold dust indeed. I also particularly liked the chapter on how to tighten your prose, i.e. words to stop using. Armed with Crews' undoubted experience and wisdom I'm now powering through my manuscript, and back on track to actually publish something soon (three books in the pipe). Full of solid practical guidance, I would classify this as a 'must read' for anyone embarking on their first fiction project, or trying to raise their game. My Kindle copy is now about 50% hi-lighted, it really is that packed full of wisdom. No amount of reading is gonna make anyone a great novelist - talent and ability must necessarily come from within - but with Novel Secrets as a companion, you'll definitely save a lot of time and energy in the writing process. I could gush some more, but I guess I'd better get back to the keyboard; this book won't write itself! Five huge stars.

By Alley Warren This is the first book I ever read that deals head on with the challenging topic of what to do if things don’t go the way you want them to in a relationship. The Authors dedicate a whole segment covering what to do with the inevitable disappointments. What I liked most about it was that it pointed out that challenges in relationships are normal and that everything does not have to be perfect all the time in order for a relationship to be a good one. This gave me a renewed sense of hopefulness that challenges can be worked through and they offered great ideas as to how to face them.

Marino Let me begin by saying, I have had the direct experience of a family member being incarcerated and know the sorrow it brings. L.J. Hamon has written a clear and accurate account of how difficult it can be to have a loved one in prison. Her insight into the heart and mind of the main character, a teenage boy, is touching as he faces the death of close friends, the temptations of gang involvement and the struggle to reconnect with his father who is in prison. Issues of drug and alcohol addiction, "drive-by shootings", eating disorders, teenage pregnancy and thoughts of suicide are all handled with sensitivity. I was especially interested in the rehabilitation treatment program called "Therapeutic Community" and the use of Psychosynthesis to help inmates connect with their "wise core higher self". In my opinion, "My Dad Wears Prison Blues" should be required reading for all high school students.

By Amazon Customer This book is easy reading while it really shows the impact of prison on a family. The main character, Josh, is defined by his anger with his father, who is in prison, plus the pressure of life as a teenager. Author L J Hamon paints a realistic picture of the struggle Josh goes thru while dealing with problems with his family, friends and gangs, This is not a book that bores you with statistics and theories. It is a book about life. The letters from people who have been in prison are moving. I highly recommend this book. The only reason I give it 4 stars is that the print of some of the letters in the back of the book is small and I had a hard time reading them.

Josh is eighteen and is struggling to do the right thing. His two best friends were shot and they died in his arms. He is over whelmed with grief and revenge and self hatred. This is a story of family love and support. Josh's dad is in a addiction treatment prison. As the dad is healing himself the letters that he writes to his son help rebuild their relationship. The second part of the book are real letters that were written by inmates who wanted to share their experience with young people.

I saw myself more than once when I read over “highly sensitive to criticism” and “didn’t like working in a group” more than once. I excelled at reading, writing, and spelling; not so good in math, so maybe I “fell through the cracks” so to speak.Some ideas of what you can expect to glean from this informative and helpful guide:• How to nurture your child’s gift, expanding upon it with extracurricular activities• When and how to pull back if your child is experiencing burnout or stress• Helpful information on spiritual development and purpose-seeking-things that lead to good “character building”• Nutrition tips for cognitive benefits and how best to utilize them (including recipes)Well done! No stone unturned on this topic. It’s not easy, but can be very rewarding! All of the contributing quotes; quite enriching and encouraging. About the Author Shantiom Mumtaz Mahal was born and live in Sweden. As she was the only child and her parents had several supermarkets she automatically started to work in her parents stores at a very young age and has continued it ever since. But on the side she has educated herself and was quite active in the politics in her local and regional area and even at a young age she could see results of her actions in the society. Major things like free media and free choice of school for children were accepted by the parliament and government. All her life she has been surrounded by animals, at first dogs and cats and when she had her own home and family all the extra animals where added like rabbits, horses, a parrot, fish, more cats and more dogs, which has really been an education in itself. It has also been a fantastic experience for her to be a part of her family and experience the children’s growth and her own, where karate has been an important common hobby for the whole family. Ballet and instruments have also played an important role in their lives. From her early childhood her mother and grand- mother have shared their great knowledge and love for gardening with her which she also has used a lot during her life. Later on she has been educated in Polarity Therapy, Iridology, and Esoteric Science. For many years Shantiom has been following the teachings of a perfect living Soul-Master which has greatly enriched her life. In 2005 she started attending seminars with Bob Proctor, since then she has been educated as a LifeSuccess Consultant and attended several seminars and Matrixxs’s. And she continues to study his teachings and now she is ready for the book business and sharing her knowledge with other people.

Shantiom takes you through a practical, refreshing process that gives you the power to take giant leaps in the pursuit of a more fulfilling connection with your ideal mate, or your soul mate to be. Her guidance really opens your eyes to seeing where you are now, and understanding how easy it can be to make adjustments that enable you to receive all the love you desire. I highly recommend this book.

It says nothing about Fernando Pessoa. It is as boring as a textbook. Bell deals with every possible aspect of the subject, and presumably actually read most or even all of what he discusses. It was his thankless task to introduce English-speaking people to a literature which was substantially unknown to them, and to write the book just before the greatest Portuguese writer, Pessoa, came to public attention.

By Amazon Customer We are all looking for autonomy, mastery and purpose in what we do, it is no less with students. In Gayle Allen's work, "The New Pillars of Modern Teaching", the shift to the student and teacher as a "learning worker" is defined. Learning, according to Allen, is now about the design, curation and feedback. The book not only defines these three pillars, but gives a clear implementation including example web sites. The last chapter also clarifies the need to have students learn to fail faster. Failure is critical to learning so good students will need to fail quickly to learn and then move on. The teacher's role shifts to supporting this process.One weakness is the lack of understanding of the Quality movement in this process. Allen needs to reflect on expanding her understanding of feedback. Not only do you need to have a feedback loop so you can improve on a specific task, but you need a Quality Improvement process, not just feedback. The student needs to know what to improve, but they need to better understand why they came to that thought in the first place so they can truly change their thinking. Just getting feedback will not make you more efficient. To fail faster the student will need to reflect on how they came to that point in the first place, then modify their future learning.Over all it is a short, but excellent reflection on where things are heading.John Sonnenbergjohn.sonnen@aol.com

This is the 5th book in the Nugget series and I will miss the town and its charming inhabitants when the series ends. This time around, I particularly liked the fact that there was a Latino hero.

She goes from a selfish, manipulative teenager to an even more selfish, manipulative woman. That was easy to see on page one. I think I would have been fighting mad if Lucky had unluckily not wised up. Yeah, this book produced some strong feeling concerning the characters from me.Getting Lucky by Stacy Finz is the best of the Nugget series. I would highly recommend it to readers new to the series. Why? It has a wonderful man even if he is misguided in his love life. It has an adorable sick little girl with a wonderful hard working single mother. It has a romance that is worthy of the couple, a community that cares, and plenty of intrigue with drug dealers who need to get taken down.The plot is structured so that you are completely drawn into the story wanting to shake some sense into some and smack the daylight out of others! I love how Ms. Finz spices up a sweet story about family, hope and love by throwing in some mystery and suspense. I really enjoyed this story and I especially loved Tawny.Tawny Wade is in need of some good luck in her life. Her daughter has leukemia and is in need of a transplant that she can't provide. She's down to her last option - contacting her daughter's father and hoping that he would be a match and donate the bone marrow that she needs. But first she has to tell him ten years after their one night stand that he has a nine-year old daughter that she had kept from him. Tawny loved Lucky Rodriguez back in high school and kept the identity of her baby's father secret to protect Lucky back then, but Lucky only had eyes for Raylene, the daughter of the richest man in town.Lucky Rodriguez's successful career as a bull rider has earned him celebrity status in his hometown of Nugget, California but it wasn't always so. Ten years ago, Lucky narrowly escaped a false rape accusation when he left town suddenly and joined the rodeo. Now he's back and in for the shock his life when he discovers he has a daughter he never knew about and that he's her last hope for a much needed transplant.Lucky was a real stand-up guy, attractive, sweet, nice and honorable and a doting father to his daughter, but even nice guys have some weaknesses and Lucky's was Raylene. Lucky has loved her forever and was happy to rekindle his relationship with her but he seemed blind to her faults. It was really annoying that it took him almost getting into trouble AGAIN because of her to see how selfish and vindictive she really was. I love Tawny because she rolled with the hard knocks from life and turned them into positives. Her daughter was her number one priority and she was willing to share her with Lucky but she was smart enough to know that falling for Lucky again was a sure way to heartache.There was so much going on for everyone in this book. Lucky had to deal with a sick daughter, a demanding girlfriend, suspected criminal activity on his ranch including being named as a murder suspect. For Tawny, coming clean opened her up to new friendships and she learned to let people in and share her burdens. I love how the town stood by them and stepped up to support them through everything. This story is sure to make you love small towns and the close relationships and caring they offer and I definitely recommend it. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
