A powerful appeal to the power of reasoning By Beran Parry We live in an age where the critical faculties have become strangely unfashionable, where debate is dominated by dogma and where the supremacy of human reasoning has been relegated to the fringes of intellectual endeavour. This timely book on Critical Thinking is more than a manual of techniques to stimulate the reasoning faculties of the human mind; it is a wake up call to restore the faculties of logic and reasoning to every level of human endeavour and the author deserves full recognition for signalling the lack of this essential quality in our daily discourse and reflections on the world around us. The Age of Reason witnessed social and scientific progress on an unprecedented scale. Critical Thinking reminds us all that our power to reason deserves to be developed and engaged because this is the critical faculty that underpins our freedom. This is a book that should be in every classroom, in every home, a focal point for exercising the powers of our rational minds. To the author - bravo!

It offers a story of two puppies, a young girl, and a vegetable pizza. But the writer surprises the reader with several unexpected developments in the adventures of the puppies. Any kid would thoroughly enjoy this book, especially lovers of pets. I loved the story, but I especially loved the illustrations. Very cute. I recommend this book highly for all children.

Hopkins I have to admit I was in the mood for a holiday-themed story and really needing something with a happy ending. Sometimes you pick up the right story at just the right time — for me today that was "Completions and Connections" by author Kathryn R. Biel.I did receive this novella as an arc in exchange for an honest review and I'm really glad I had the chance to read this gem today as I prepare to finish wrapping Christmas presents and plan my holiday baking schedule. If you're looking for a fun holiday romance as a stocking stuffer for someone on your list (or maybe one for yourself) you can't go wrong with "Completions and Connections."Author Biel jumps the reader right in with Christine's new year resolution list, and I'm sure there are at least two or three of this character's resolutions that will look familiar to you. Number six is one I'd like to add to my personal list. I connected with Christine personally, because I'm also a list-maker. Seriously, I really liked Christine. She's funny and real.We get to spend a year with Christine, from her memorable January run-in with Patrick to their December reunion in one of the most unlikely places. It's the chaotic months in between that I truly enjoyed — Biel's style is witty, fun and I enjoyed the build-up to Christine's much deserved happily ever after.I highly recommend "Completions and Connections: A Romantic Holiday Novella by Kathryn R. Biel. It's a fast, fun read that's perfect for the holidays or any day of the year!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fun, Festive, and Fabulous! By BrainyBlonde What a fun read! I breezed through this charming holiday-themed novella in just two evenings. The premise was unique, and I liked that the story was told over the course of a year, starting in January and running through to Christmas Eve. When we're introduced to heroine Christine, she is bumbling her way through a ski trip with her bestie in an effort to cross an item ("Try something new.") off her New Year's resolutions list. She's miserable until she has a meet-cute with gorgeous Patrick on the slopes. Unfortunately, she's whisked off by her friend before she can really connect with this man who appears to be Mr. Right, but their paths do cross again, several times in fact, as the year progresses. Are they destined to be together, or will Fate continue to thwart them?I was really rooting for these two crazy kids and felt as frustrated as Christine that things never seemed to work out. At the same time, the slow burn of their relationship was quite delicious. Good things come to those who wait, right? And the obstacles the author placed in their way were both clever and entertaining. For a relatively short read, this novella had a surprising amount of character development for the two leads. So, kudos to the author for that. I grew to like both Christine and Patrick so much that I'd love to see them show up again in a full-length story! If you are looking for a fast, engaging read with an equal amount of chuckles and romance, I highly recommend Completions and Connections.

Phillips Christine is a list-maker and this year her resolutions are pretty much filled to the brim with cliches , such as try something new , fall in love , go on a holiday. When her friend decides to help with the try something new in January- the pair head to skiing. Christine believes she is making a fool out of herself , until she meets Patrick who is A) taller than her 5ft 11 and B) he is an Indiana Jones fanatic. Has Christine finally met her romantic match and will she be able to tick falling in love off her checklist ? As the year goes by, though love doesn't come as easy as it should as both Christine's and Patrick's schedules don't seem to mesh and they keep missing one another - this happens for most of the year until Christine is ready to give up on love and she meets Patrick in the Supermarket. Will Christine finally be able to tick off falling in love ? Can the pair make it work with their schedules and lives ?Find out in this lovely holiday novella , that if you are wanting a quick romantic read with a bit of laughs , then Completions and Connections is the book you have to read and will be ticking off your TBR checklist.I loved this book as it was sweet and in a way I could relate to Christine and the whole awkward timing as sometimes you meet someone like that and you plan to meet, but things keep on piling up and eventually - they fizzle away until you hear /see them again.

'There is a charm about the forbidden that makes it unspeakably desirable'. —Mark Twain By Grady Harp West Virginia author Annie Kelly (the nom de plume for writer Kelly Fiore Stultz) graduated from Salisbury University with a degree in English and proceeded to get her MFA in Poetry from West Virginia University. She teaches writing and composition at Shepherd University and enjoys her gifts as a writing composing both young adult novels and steamy romance novels – novels in two series,Flirting with Trouble The Love You Left Behind series.Annie’s depth of training in composition and poetry show immediately in the quotations form famous authors she uses to set the tone for her book- AFTER TONIGHT. Instead of being solely a chick lit erotic story she paints this tale with sophisticated language and imagery. Her synopsis is tells much about her talent: ‘She may be the teacher.... But he’s the one giving her a lesson.... All Hyacinth "Cyn" Hendricks ever wanted to do was make a difference in the world. But when she joins the faculty of a Baltimore reform school, she discovers that she’s bitten off more than she can chew. Annie choice of conversational tone is dead center for a real outing with the libido. It looks like she’s found her niche – and likely will be very successful there! Grady Harp, January16

Britton Review for Ramblings From This Chick. ramblingsfromthischick.blogspot.comI have mixed feelings about this book, and I am still trying to sort out exactly how I feel about it. While there were things I liked about After Tonight by Annie Kelly, I also had several problems with it. This book was somewhere between 2 and 3 stars for me, and honestly I am not sure that I will continue reading the series from here on out. When her friends drag her out to a club, Hyacinth "Cyn" Hendricks decides to let go for a night. She is working on finishing her graduate degree and is student teaching at a reform school for troubled individuals. When she meets her newest student the following week though, she finds herself face to face with the sexy stranger she met at the club the week before and made out with. Though Smith Asher doesn't look like a 20 year old and didn't act like one either, she quickly realizes how complicated her life has just become. Though the chemistry and attraction between them is intense, she knows that she needs to fight it. But the more time they spend together, the more they each want to cross that line.Part of my problem here was the characters themselves. Smith was really hard to like. The way he acted made sense when all was said and done, but it made for a hero that was almost impossible to root for. I couldn't connect with him or Cyn and honestly I just didn't really care for either of them. While Cyn wasn't awful, she wasn't that easy to relate to either. There just isn't a lot to really say about either of them for me, and the fact that neither of them is that memorable or likable is part of what sealed the deal for me here. These two spend the majority of this book apart, and besides the physical chemistry they have I didn't believe in them as a couple at all. In fact when I got to the end and the declarations of love were happening I was rolling my eyes and asking how these two could possibly feel that way about one another. We never got to see it happen, and these two really didn't know one another that well.I also had an issue with Cyn's friends here. While they got better over the course of the book, I found them immediately off-putting. They practically forced her to go to this club that she never would have gone to and put her in a situation that she had no idea she was facing, oh and they also insulted her several times in the process as well. Some friends! There were also a few inconsistencies here as well, the biggest one I noticed was the name of Cyn's ex boyfriend. At times he was referred to as Brent and others as Brett. I believe it was supposed to be Brent as that one seemed to be used more, but I am not really sure. This is a mistake that could have been fixed before the final version was published though, as I was given an ARC that could still have errors. Overall, I just had a lot that really didn't work for me here which was disappointing since I was really looking forward to this story. The blurb really drew me in and I guess I was just expecting more. While there were some really sexy moments for these two, I found the story itself lacking. I was easily bored with Cyn's day-to-day life detailed as much as it was, and unfortunately that was what the majority of this book was. While this book is a standalone story, the series will continue with Cyn's best friend Carson getting her book next. Until Tomorrow is set to release in March, and I don't know if I will read it yet or not since I wasn't her biggest fan here.**Complimentary Copy Provided by Publisher**

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Sexy forbidden romance By Lacey @ Booklovers For Life I looove forbidden romances, so when I read the blurb for After Tonight, I couldn’t wait to start it. A forbidden love story between a teacher and her 20-year-old student… who she actually met the other night and almost hooked up with? Um, yes please!!! I had high expectations for this book, but… it fell a little short of them. Don’t get me wrong, this was still fun and sexy as hell, but I wanted something more. I didn’t really connect with the characters, so I wasn’t as into this book as I wish I had been. It was a little dull at some parts, intense at others, but overall, After Tonight was a very okay book.On her first day of student teaching, the last person Hyacinth expects to see is Smith Asher, the man she had an intense connection with the other night at a fantasy club. They may not have technically done anything that night, but she still let loose and let him see her naked… so she’s mortified to realize that he’s actually going to be her student. Now, Cyn is determined to ignore their chemistry and pretend like nothing ever happened between them, but Smith won’t let her forget. Even though he’s twenty, he’s intense, sexy, and very much hard to ignore. He riles Cyn up easily, and the forbidden-ness of their relationship only makes the chemistry between them burn hotter than ever.“Every day I want you more, and every day I can have you less,” he murmurs.I didn’t really like Smith, to be honest. He was pushy at times, and very hot-and-cold. His behavior was basically all over the place, so I couldn’t see why Cyn liked him, other than their attraction for each other. I didn’t get or connect with their relationship at all – it was basically only ever sexual between them. I expected a little more from this. I love forbidden romances, especially teacher/student ones, but After Tonight was only… okay. A little boring sometimes, but still plenty sexy. I will say, though, that I didn’t see the plot twist coming at all! That was probably the best part of the book – the author certainly surprised me with a twist I didn’t see coming, but was completely believable. If you’re a fan of forbidden romances, this might not be the best book, but if you’re looking for something quick and sexy, I’d say why not. The writing was good, but the story and characters weren’t as good as I’d hoped. Still, I’m intrigued enough by the sequel that I will most likely continue the series and give it a try.

This is the first English translation of the last book written by Paulo Freire. Pedagogy of Indignation delves ever deeper into the themes that concerned him throughout his life. The book begins with a series of three deeply moving reflective "pedagogical letters" to the reader about the role of education for one's development of self. He also speaks directly to the reader about the relationship to risk in one's life and he delves deeper than before into the daily life tensions between freedom and authority. Building on these interconnected themes, Freire sharpens our sense of the critical faculties of children and how a teacher may work with children to help them realize their potential intellectually and as human beings. Subsequent chapters explore these topics in relation to the wider social world: the social constitution of the self in the work of educators; critical citizenship; and the necessity of teaching "from a position" about the world that goes beyond literacy programs to include the legacy of colonialism in peoples' resistance movements today. The book's poignant interludes, written by Ana Maria Araujo Freire, reveal Paulo's thoughts about the content of this book as he was completing it during the last weeks and days of his life.

Pedagogy of Indignation (Series in Critical Narrative), by Paulo Freire

Review Critical theory in education has too often lapsed into an intellectual posturing detached from real possibilities for transformation and thus failed to challenge neoliberal fatalism about how things are or need to be. Ever persuasive and impressive, Freire takes up the challenge and in the act shows us not just the possibility but the reality of a pedagogy of hope. --Jim Gee, Arizona State University

About the Author The late Paulo Freire, of Brazil, is perhaps the most influential education writer of our times. His many books, which include the classics Pedagogy of the Oppressed and Pedagogy of Freedom, have been translated into more than 40 languages.Donaldo Macedo is Distinguished Professor of Education at the University of Massachusetts, Boston.

Utopian vision as moral compass for educators By Alan Broomhead Daring to Dream is a posthumously published collection of some of Freire's writing, speeches, and dialogues, assembled by his second wife. The book is premised on Freire's idea of history as possibility rather than as determinism. In other words, we can take the attitude that things are the way they are, and there is nothing we can do about it (fatalism, determinism), to say, "that is the reality of things;" or that we can play a part in making history (possibility), by taking the attitude that, "reality can and must be mutable; it must be transformable."Freire wants the oppressed peoples to realize that history is not determined, to raise their consciousness that they have agency in this world, to transform the world rather than adapting to it, to participate in history rather than being subject to it.They can act upon history, rather than merely being acted upon by those in more powerful positions. Freire's teaching philosophy includes the notion that by discussing the notion of culture with learners, the teacher can help learners to be creators of culture, "not simply as a spectator of the world, but as someone who intervenes, who is capable of intervention in the world, are able to change the world." Freire is inspired, even in his old age, by "the possibility of surpassing the condition of object and reaching the condition of subject, maker of the world, remaker of the world." In order to realize the view of history as possibility, we have choices when we confront "limit situations:" decide that we cannot possibly overcome the situation, decide that we don't want to overcome it, at least for the time being, or decide that it is something to be overcome. But the key theme of the book is the notion that in order to sustain this idea that you can be a participant in history, the idea of history as possibility, then you also must have a vision or dream of what the future might look like. Why should this be a 'dare?' For a few reasons, I think: you might dream of something better and find your current situation so depressingly far from that, that you give up trying to do anything about it; or, looking at the current situation, you might limit your vision of the future, whereas Freire wants you to go way beyond a vision that might be constricted by current conditions; and, in your dream of the future, you might be ridiculed by those around you, precisely as a "dreamer."I see a parallel here with Christian values, which influenced Freire's thinking. A person who holds the Christian values of beneficence, forgiveness, and helping the poor and the weak, might envision a society that eradicates poverty, one in which the poor are taken care of. Although it may be impossible to bring about this society right now - or even to imagine it as a real possibility - it is important to hold that idea in your mind, be inspired by it, and let it guide your actions.Freire is writing for people who, in his words, "refuse to settle," who hold in themselves a dream of democracy and liberation. He is realistic about what people can accomplish. He does not believe that today's struggles will necessarily accomplish their goals, but they may lay the ground work for future generations. This is why the book is subtitled, "Toward a pedagogy of the unfinished."Read this to deepen your well of knowledge of the transformational possibilities of education, as well as education's limits; let it inspire you to conceive your own 'dream' by which to be guided as an educator.

Daring to Dream - Paulo Freire By Jeff 'Dear Paulo,As I read through the poem you had given to Nita, that she decided to put at the start of your posthumous book, Daring to Dream, I found you speaking of creating a new discourse to counteract that which is created by the oppressor and reinforced by society. You go on to speak of our bodies in relation to this discourse, stating, “Our different discourse / —our action-word—will be spoken / by our whole bodies: / our hands, our feet, our reflections” (2007, p. xxxix). I can’t help but wonder if you speak only metaphorically, or if you mean to say that our nonverbal communication is a key part of this new discourse, this action word. Do you mean our individual bodies or the bodies of all of the oppressed standing up to oppression? What of the implicit metaphor in this statement, that the new discourse, the “action word,” will imbue mere words with the strength of our physical being?'Read more at: [...]

The Halfway House for Writers, by Valley Haggard

Review "Twenty pages into your book and it feels like I've finally found my bible. It has literally never occurred to me that anyone else felt this way. Thank you, thank you, thank you!" --Susan Howson, RVA News"...[A]n absolutely necessary handbook for anyone who has ever felt that burning longing to write and all the tangled emotions that come with it: doubt, anxiety, fear, self-flagellation... Valley offers prompts, gentle guidance and practical advice on how to approach this tricky process of extracting splinters and turning them into stories. If you write, or want to write, or even wish you could write, read this book. It's for you." --Melissa Scott Sinclair, author of The End"The Halfway House for Writers is a gem of a book. Filled with revealing personal anecdotes and honest advice it's a combination memoir/self-help book disguised as a handbook for aspiring writers." --Noah Scalin, author of Skull-A-Day"The Halfway House for Writers is a book I'll read again. And again. And again... I couldn't put it down.... The title is deceiving. I think Halfway House will inspire artists of all kinds, not just writers. It nurtures the creative spirit. Valley's approach is fresh and honest and real--a new wisdom for a new decade." --A.B. Westrick, author of Brotherhood

From the Author I've been brought up by high school literary magazines and college creative writing workshops. I have been a camper, counselor and director of creative writing camps for kids. I have been in writing groups and writing classes. I have interviewed authors and reviewed their books. I have judged fiction contests, fellowships and awards for children and adults. I have taught creative nonfiction workshops, classes and retreats. I have been a book editor, published in anthologies and authored first person columns.I am in recovery from everything. Alcohol and drugs and money and donuts and love. But also a lifelong addiction to terrorizing myself as a writer, editing myself down to the bone, comparing my writing to everyone else's and basically sacrificing myself at the altar of unrealistic expectations. I have been searching for a process by which to lay down my weapons, to stop holding myself hostage, to stop strangling my work before it has a chance to breathe. I am learning to become a gentle editor and a kind friend to myself on the page. What follows are some of the most essential things I have learned about writing after studying hundreds of books and teaching hundreds of writers of every level and degree of experience. In this handbook, I have written about some of the most common themes and threads that have arisen repeatedly in my classes, practical advice for getting started on the page, the story of my own journey towards healing as a writer, some samples of my work that have emerged from my practice and an invitation to submit your own writing to my online literary magazine, Life in 10 Minutes.I am not in charge of the Halfway House--I am a student of it. Every single day when I sit down to write I am a beginner. Whether you have written every day of your life or none, welcome. We are all on the same blank page together.

She has written book reviews, author interviews and first person columns; judged fiction contests and fellowships and sat on non-profit writing boards. The founder and co-director of Richmond Young Writers, she leads creative nonfiction marathons, workshops and retreats for adults. Sobel When it comes time for Natalie Goldberg to pass on the baton to the next generation's writing muse, Valley Haggard should be first in line. "Halfway House for Writers" will not only open the doors to your imagination, it will reveal that the house itself remains under construction and you can add doors wherever you want them, including one on the upstairs bathroom ceiling that leads to a 360-degree panoramic view of your ragged slipshod jerry-rigged back-alley neighborhood, though somehow still shimmering with incandescent light. Valley's book will inspire even the most blocked slug of a non-disciplined, self-hating wannabe writer to edge forward to the blank page and dare to begin putting words down, for better or worse, trusting that a hidden font of wild creative revelation lies just beneath the surface of mundane mind, just waiting to storm the gates of self-censorship and explode into the world of free expression.

Jonah’s new twin must time travel and face off against his siblings’ worst enemy in order to save the future—and his family—in the eighth and final book of the New York Times bestselling The Missing series, which Kirkus Reviews calls “plenty of fun and great for history teachers as well.”After traveling through history multiple times and finding out his original identity, Jonah thought he’d fixed everything. But some of his actions left unexpected consequences. His parents—and many other adults—are still stuck as teenagers. And now Jonah has a new sibling, an identical twin brother named Jordan. As odd as all this is for Jonah, it’s beyond confusing for Jordan. How does everyone in his family have memories of Jonah when he doesn’t? How can his annoying kid sister Katherine speak so expertly about time travel—and have people from the future treating her with respect? A few rash moves by Jordan send them all into the future—and into danger. What if he’s also the only one who can get them back to safety, once and for all?

ONE

When Jordan Skidmore came down the stairs that morning, he didn’t expect to see a strange kid sitting in his family’s living room. He really didn’t expect to see a strange kid who looked exactly like Jordan himself. Jordan instantly forgot that he’d been running downstairs to tell his sister, Katherine, that he had dibs on the biggest TV in the house. He forgot that, until a moment earlier, he’d been happy to be staying home sick from school, and to have nothing ahead of him all day except taking it easy. He skidded to a stop on the wooden floor. “Who—who are you?” he blurted. It felt like a stupid question. Jordan might as well have skipped ahead to What evil scientist stole my DNA and secretly cloned me? That was how much he and the other kid looked alike. The other kid had Jordan’s exact same shade of light brown hair, the exact same shape and shade of dark blue eyes, even the exact same stupid chin dimple, positioned just enough off center to make his whole face look slightly askew. No, wait—that kid’s dimple is a little to the right, and mine’s a little to the left, Jordan thought. Which meant that looking at this kid was like looking into a mirror. Only this was a mirror image that could sit while Jordan was standing; he could shove back his messy hair while Jordan let both arms dangle uselessly—and he could raise his eyebrows and blink even as Jordan felt his own face stuck in a mask of shocked astonishment. And it was a mirror image that could wear totally different clothes. Jordan had on a basketball camp T-shirt and gray sweatpants. This kid was wearing the nerdiest clothes ever: a sweater vest and short pants that buttoned at his knees and the same kind of stiff, ugly shoes Jordan’s dad wore to work. Jordan also noticed that this mirror-image kid didn’t answer. But Katherine did. For the first time Jordan realized that his sister was sprawled on the floor by the other kid’s feet. “Jordan, Jonah—the two of you have got to stop acting like the other one doesn’t exist!” she said. Huh? Jordan thought. Katherine was Jordan’s younger sister, eleven years old to Jordan’s thirteen. Still, she usually acted like it was her job to boss him around. Usually Jordan just ignored her. But what was she even talking about now? “You’re exactly alike!” Katherine went on lecturing him. And . . . was she lecturing the other boy too? Did she know who he was and why he looked so much like Jordan? “You’re practically the same person! That’s why you’re not getting along!” Jordan got the “exactly alike” part. But the rest of it made no sense. How could he and this other kid have ever gotten along or not gotten along—or acted like the other person did or did not exist—when they’d never seen each other before in their lives? Jordan saw something like understanding slide over the other boy’s face. Did he know what Katherine meant? Is this just some really, really good prank? Jordan wondered. And the other boy’s in on it? The truth was, Jordan was more likely to try to prank Katherine than the other way around. And even if this was a Katherine prank, how could she have made someone look so much like Jordan? Even the best Hollywood makeup artist couldn’t do that, not even with makeup and a prosthetic nose and chin. This kid wasn’t wearing makeup. His nose and chin looked as real as the nose and chin on Jordan’s own face. So, then . . . Jordan scrambled for other explanations that didn’t involve impossible pranks or evil scientists and secret cloning. Something truly awful occurred to him. Jordan was adopted. He’d never known anything about his birth family. Though he never bothered thinking about it much, it was possible that dozens of people out there in the world looked like him. He might have all sorts of blood relatives—brothers, sisters, cousins, even—that he’d never met. Brothers and cousins wouldn’t look exactly like me, Jordan argued with himself. Sisters definitely wouldn’t. But the idea that this kid might have something to do with Jordan’s adoption made him feel even more unsettled. His mind blanked out for a moment. He barely noticed Katherine and the strange kid—Jonah? Was his name Jonah?—snapping their heads to the left, to gaze out the front window toward the driveway. He barely noticed the sound of a strange car speeding into the driveway and slamming on the brakes with such a screech that the car must have just barely missed smashing into the garage. So it was even more of a jolt when the front door beside Jordan swung open and banged against the wall. He turned just in time to see three strange kids sweep in through the door. They all looked to be about thirteen too. Two were girls and one was a boy; one of the girls was super tall. “I thought—I thought you were going to change back,” strange mirror-image boy stammered behind Jordan. Jordan was kind of relieved to hear the other boy sounding shocked too. But was he talking about changing clothes? These kids’ clothes looked normal: T-shirts and jeans like anyone would wear. Except . . . is that one of my shirts the boy is wearing? And one of Katherine’s shirts the shorter girl is wearing? Jordan wondered. “We couldn’t wait,” the shorter girl said breathlessly. Her voice sounded kind of familiar, but Jordan couldn’t figure out why. “We had to make sure all three of you were safe first. Oh, Jonah . . . Jordan . . . Katherine . . .” How does she know me and Katherine? Jordan wondered. And—does this prove mirror-image boy is named Jonah? “We were so afraid we’d lose all three of you forever,” stolen-shirt boy wailed behind her. Why would some kid Jordan had never seen before worry about losing Jordan and Katherine? And does nobody else notice that this Jonah kid looks just like me? Jordan wondered. Before he could ask any of these questions out loud, the shorter girl slammed into him, with stolen-shirt boy hitting him a split second later. It wasn’t a tackle. It was more like a running hug. The two of them pulled Jordan along, dragging him toward Katherine and Jonah. The kids yanked Katherine up from the floor and Jonah up from the chair into some weird group hug. Jordan didn’t even know any of these people except Katherine—and he and she had stopped hugging each other about the time Katherine started kindergarten. Mom and Dad would probably like us to keep doing Skidmore family hugs all the time, but . . . ugh, Jordan thought. Not going to happen. Maybe Katherine was thinking along the same lines, because as the two running huggers crushed them all closer together, she began stuttering, “M-mom? D-dad?” Sarcasm, Jordan thought. Way to call those two out on how weird they’re being. They’re acting like parents! But Katherine’s face looked deadly serious. And worried. She was such a drama queen. “What happened to you?” she asked the newly arrived trio of strange kids. “I mean, I can see what happened to you—you’re, like, kids. But why? Or—did you travel from the past? How much did Jonah mess up time after I left?” “I didn’t mess up time!” Jonah protested hotly. “I fixed it!” “Katherine, it’s true,” the taller girl said, hovering behind the weirdo group-hug scene. “You missed a lot. Jonah saved everyone.” Jordan grimaced. None of this made sense. Travel from the past? Messed-up time? Huh? But he felt something like a stab of jealousy. Had Jordan ever accomplished anything that made people say his name with such reverence and pride? Short answer: No, Jordan thought. His parents were the type who made a big deal when he got good grades or scored a soccer goal or did some Boy Scout service project. But even they would never say that Jordan had “saved everyone.” Somehow this made Jordan feel even weirder about the fact that identical-boy Jonah had his arm wrapped around Jordan’s right side, even as Katherine hugged him from the left. Jordan jerked back, breaking everyone’s hold on him. “I don’t know what any of you are talking about,” Jordan said, and it annoyed him that his voice came out squeaky and childish instead of strong and forceful. “But Katherine, you’re going to get in trouble for inviting all these people over when we’re both home sick.” He sounded like a five-year-old threatening to tattle. The short girl wearing Katherine’s clothes reached for Jordan again. “Oh, honey,” she said, patting his shoulder. “I can see where this would feel very strange to you.” Her voice was familiar. So was the way she was patting his shoulder. It was exactly what his mother would say and do. Jordan stared into this strange girl’s face. And now that he was focused, he recognized her. This girl looked exactly like his mother did in old pictures—the ones from thirty years ago, when she was a teenager. Jordan shifted his gaze to stolen-shirt boy’s face, and it matched Jordan’s memory of his father’s old pictures too. How could these two kids who were standing in Jordan’s own living room right now, in the twenty-first century, look so much like pictures from the past? Jordan could think of only one explanation. Because suddenly he saw the real reason Katherine had stammered, M-mom? D-dad? She wasn’t being sarcastic. Just stunned. These really were his and Katherine’s parents. Only somehow they’d turned back into kids again. Jordan collapsed to the floor.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Different from the other books in the series. By Tracy I loved this series, but this book is lacking a lot of what made the other books great. There is a lot of time travel in the book but there is no history. I loved the history in the other books. Also, while in the future, the kids are kept from learning too much about the future (so we don't get to see what it is like either). Much of the book takes place in a bland setting. This story is character driven, but it is a new character that we don't know very well. I was rather disappointed in this book. I will continue to recommend this series but this is not the best book in the series.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Still good but... By JnD Good but not as good as the rest of the series. There were lots of repetitive parts. Kinda of felt the story could have just been wrapped up in the prior book and that this one was an after thought.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good finish, but poor main character and confusing ideas. By onceuponastory This the Eighth and final book of the missing series and I have to say, the author did a pretty good job as far as happy endings go. Without giving away too much, our favorite characters emerge unscathed and become one,big happy family. Almost literarily. I can't say that i was enthused with Jordan. He seems whiny and incompetent, not just compared to Jonah, but in general. I can understand Jordan's shock and desperation for things to be fixed, but he seems too caught up with himself. The other element of this book that cost it a star is something that I noticed in the last book too. It's a hodge-podge of ideas, thrown together so rapidly that it takes at least two reads of each sentence before the meaning seeps into his brain.Nevertheless, it's a good story and I'd recomend this book to anyone.

I Am Not My Circumstance came about when I finally had an awakening and began to tap into why God created me. Your circumstances, rather derived from, child molestation, domestic abuse, drug abuse, growing up with both parents being absent in the home, adoption, or even being bullied. I could go on and on. However, I call all of these, “circumstances, or SO WHATS!” In Matthew 7:7-8 of the Holy Bible, it states, “Ask and it shall be given t you, seek and you shall find, knock and the door shall be opened unto you.” Growing up, no one taught me how to deal with “me.” In this book, I will reveal to you how I learned to deal with my “inner me.” This book will advise you on how to deal with YOU and the illusion that your circumstances create in which are all designed to keep you living in fear.

It had my attention from the first few sentences which is very important to me .I was also happy with the delivery time of the book . For a first time author Mr. Edwards hit a home run ! The main characters Mary and Jumping - Buck went very well together . The book has funny parts and also parts that have you on the edge of your seat .I'm looking forward to the second book " The Rising " I like how he put the introduction to it at the end of Balance . I can hardly wait to find out how man kind will make it without all of the modern conveniences they are use to. Also who is the girl bigfoot that is going to be with Fang - Tooth ! You don't have to be into bigfoot to enjoy this book you just have to be into a good story ! Great book .

It has lots to give to any reader, and just goes to show there are still some very insightful unique writers out there. I really like the way the book was written, you get to see both sided to the story. It had everything you would want in a book from some funny parts to amazing fight scenes that keeps you in the story. I have already suggested it to several of my friends. I'm looking forwarded to the squeals!

I liked the different personalities of the characters. I also like the way the author gave instances where the sasquatch had to conceal himself and it was very feasible. It was a fun book with likable, and often humorous, characters. Sure it's far-fetched, but it's fiction! Enjoy it!

Moseley Beware the Power of the Dark Side! is a great retelling of Return of the Jedi for kids. It is more than a straightforward narration, as it is sprinkled with author's asides to the reader, along with the occasional footnote (some of which are quite funny).Tom Angleberger really gets the themes of ROTJ, and brings them out very well for young readers. We see how the influence of Luke helps Anakin resurface through the layers of Vader, for instance. I am also glad that the author included Luke asking Obi-Wan about his mother on Dagobah, because of course he would! That's a nice addition to the new canon that feels very natural and appropriate. All in all, I found this book very satisfying. In its own way, reading it was as satisfying as watching the film. I am a school librarian, and I know many of my students will be clamoring for this book as soon as I add it to my collection.

They love this book, especially the author asides. There's a Lemony Snicket quality to the writing. Fun to read, good illustrations. More books like this, please.

My youngest daughter, who is a big Star Wars fan has been reading these books and has been loving them. As a part of her reading them, she has been reading them to me too, and I have to say that as a fan the author did a great job capturing the essence of the movie, but beyond that, he also goes beyond that and allows the reader to gain better perspective about the characters and the situations that occur in this timeline. This is a great book and one that goes beyond the cannon and opens the eyes of young readers to the wonders and the world of Star Wars and as a fan and as a father I am so glad that this and the other books in the series have been available.*I received this for review - my opinions are my own*

By Western Reader This delightful compilation of five of Ginny’s writings is just the ticket to get one in the mood for Christmas, romance, and all things magical. From the first page to the last, I was entertained, intrigued, and completely satisfied. Each story includes characters that are believable, even the ones who might not be as likeable as one would want (after all, a good tale needs at least one not-so-wonderful character to round out the picture, so to speak).Of the five, my favorite for hilarity has to be the second tale – ‘The Holiday Bride’. This one had me laughing out loud, and I would not have been at all surprised if the Keystone Kops had shown up ... it’s a slapstick comedy that begs to be turned into a made-for-TV movie. My favorite for romance? That has to be book number four – ‘Beach Blanket Santa’. Sweet and romantic and so very lovely in its conclusion (book number five is a close runner-up ... clever plot and a rooted-for HEA).I recommend this collection to all those who want to have a good read. I was provided an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Unexpected Romantic Second Chances at Christmas By Joan Mueller This mix of holiday adventures brings to the reader just the right zing to make the holiday happier, a Christmas romance. The author engages the reader in the story from the first page providing a storyline that has humor, suspense, and a connection to the heartstrings of every person as they root for the successful outcome of each romance. Each story in the series keeps the reader engaged. My particular favorite was The Holiday Bride in which the child asks for a mother for Christmas. I received an ARC for review. I would highly recommend this book. I plan to read them again and again.

Nice, Sweet Christmas Stories By lsm71877 I have received a copy of these stories in exchange for an honest review. The Christmas Catch -The main woman is a single mom named Christine who has lost the belief in Christmas after passed away leaving her to raise their young son alone. Her friend tells her to take time off and take her son Tyler to Vermont for the holiday and try to recharge her batteries. While she and Tyler are in Vermont she meets John and both Christine and John get more than they bargained for.I found The Christmas Catch to be a wonderful Christmas story with some heartache and dreams. It was a nice read. The Holiday Bride-Lucy was a waitress engaged to a man who really had no time for her or anything else in his life so when she falls and gets amnesia is it any wonder she was in no hurry to find him or anything to do with her old life? It just happened to be that the family that she “woke up to” had a little girl who had wished for a mommy for Christmas and well, the rest was Christmas Magic. The Holiday Bride was a bit suspenseful since Lucy had developed amnesia and had no clue who she really was. It had enough love and heartache too to keep you wanting everything to work out in the end.Mistletoe In Maine -A single, divorced mom working too hard to make up for a father who never keeps his promise of being there and the fact that money is a problem for the holidays, somehow tells her 2 kids that they will be going to a lodge in Maine for the holidays. Luckily for her it not only works out that they enjoyed their stay, her daughter sees the moose shes after, but the mom falls in love while shes there!Mistletoe In Maine is one of those Christmas stories that gives divorced moms the hope that there is love out there again.Beach Blanket Santa -Two people with a past end up at the same cabin on the coast for one stormy Christmas week. Since theres no way off the coast but the ferry (and its down until further notice) what are they to do but actually get to know one another this time? Will they actually learn that they can't live without one another or when the ferry is usable again will one leave the other behind for good this time?Baby, Be Mine -A will stating that you have to get married within 2 months, what do you do? Help your best friend that you've been in love with since you were kids find a husband is the most logical choice right? Follow the story as Jack helps Nikki find a match so that she can collect the money from her Aunt's will based on the 2 stipulations put in there. Will Nikki ever realize though that Jack has been in love with her from the start?
