By Stephen Vincent Kempton This trade paperback collects the first four issues of Squirrel Girl's ongoing series which started in January 2015 plus her debut appearance in Marvel Superheroes #8 from 1990.The writing is from Ryan North of Dinosaur Comics and most recently the Adventure Time Comic. Art is by the Indie / Alternative darling Erica Henderson. The art is charming and delightful in it's simplicity and quirkiness. The writing is simplistic but equally charming. This is a book that can be enjoyed by the very young and the very old and everybody in between.Doreen Green is Squirrel Girl and she is an over night sensation. That is if you consider 25 years over night. Created by Steve Ditko (Spider-Man's co-creator) and Will Murray ( author of new Doc Savage and Tarzan Novels) in 1990. She was kept alive by writers such as Dan Slott who placed her in his Great Lakes Avengers. Some credit must also be given to G Willow Wilson who's Ms. Marvel reboot proved their was a market for books featuring teen aged girl super-heroes.Doreen Green who was fifteen in her first appearance is now old enough to start college (18 ?) We join the book as Doreen starts her college life. She has the proportional speed and strength of a squirrel. She also has a large bushy tail which she tucks in her pants when in her civilian identity so that she looks like Nicki Minaj. She also can talk with squirrels and have them do her bidding. Tippy-Toe the squirrel is her faithful friend and side kick.This book should be also praised for giving us a young girl character with a realistic body type and not another big boobed centerfold shaped girl that you find in most superhero comics.The first issue is a stand alone where she goes up against Kraven The Hunter. The manner in which she outwits Kraven is totally delightful.Starting with issue #2 Doreen becomes aware of an eminent attack by Galactus and the next three stories culminate with there meeting. Along the way her roommate Nancy Whitehead gets in trouble during a bank robbery and we meet Whiplash of Iron Man fame.The original Ditko / Murray story is included in which fifteen year old Squirrel Girl tries to have Iron-Man take her in as his sidekick . The two of them then must battle Doctor Doom.Also included are all the delightful covers and alternative covers plus the original letter pages. Ryan North also includes his own silly commentary at the bottom of most pages in small little beige lettering. It is just barely visible.OK so maybe Squirrel Girl isn't Steve Ditko's second best creation after Spider-Man. There is after all Doctor Strange, The Question, The Creeper, Mr. A and Hawk & Dove and many more. But I was afraid you wouldn't read this review if I said Ditko's twelfth best creation. What is true about this book is that it is absolutely charming and fun and you should love it.My Highest Recommendation.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Great for adults and great for kids By Liz I expected this to be cute and funny, but it's also surprisingly good for reading to kids. My daughter was showing an interest in superheroes and loved Zita the Spacegirl, so I thought this would be a nice next comic to read. She LOVES it, and I can actually enjoy it, too. I've laughed out loud multiple times, which is a lot more than I can say about anything else I've ever read to her. I would have probably bought this for myself anyway, but I thought I'd leave a review in case anyone else is on the fence about whether this is good for kids. It's hard (but getting easier!) to find books or comics that are good for younger kids but also stand up to repeated readings. I love that this is something I can read on my own but also share with my daughter.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. My daughter and I both love it By C. Muffoletto I'm a long time comic book reader, but Squirrel Girl is unlike anything else out there right now. It's clever and funny, and the heroine would actually rather not fight if she can avoid it. Best of all, the book, unlike those starring the most popular superheroes, is for all-ages, which means I can hand it over to my 6-year-old, who loves it, too. She looks through it every day and we even practice her reading using it.If you are familiar with the characters and history of Marvel comics, you will get more out of the stories. However, if you aren't, you will still be charmed, entertained, and will probably laugh out loud a few times. And your kids will, too.

About the Author Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London, England, in 1874. He went on to study art at the Slade School, and literature at University College in London. Chesterton wrote a great deal of poetry, as well as works of social and literary criticism. Among his most notable books are "The Man Who Was Thursday", a metaphysical thriller, and "The Everlasting Man", a history of humankind's spiritual progress. After Chesterton converted to Catholicism in 1922, he wrote mainly on religious topics such as "Orthodoxy" and "Heretics". Chesterton is most known for creating the famous priest-detective character Father Brown, who first appeared in "The Innocence of Father Brown". Chesterton died in 1936 at the age of 62.

Please Read By Daniel Myers This book is simply a must read for all those who love the great English novels of the Victorian Era and, furthermore, its poetry which, while historically it has fallen into what Chesterton would probably see as justified neglect (save that of Robert Browning), and is now seen as a pale and jejune lifting from the "High Romantics," notably Byron and Shelley, to whom Chesterton pays due homage at the beginning of the work, was much more preeminent at the time. Also, English prose writers get a thorough threshing out. Above all, Chesterton's treatment of Dickens is the most remarkable aspect of this work. I've never read such a spot on and thorough treatment of that omnipresent Victorian anywhere.But all this would be for naught if it weren't for Chesterton's unique and thorough style of assessing these authors. There are thousands of dry dissertations on the subject and just as many tendentious books published full of stifling academese drivel that renders them well nigh unreadable. The closest thing in the modern era to which I can compare Chesterton's writing is Harold Bloom. But this is not quite fair to either of them. Chesterton is far less trenchant. His judgments are made in a mollifying context, and he doesn't rely on anything like the "anxiety of influence" to bolster his insights.Of course, all this presumes a broad knowledge of the Victorian era, such as the Pre-Raphaelite movement in art etc. But I presume any reader of this review possesses such knowledge, or they wouldn't be considering the purchase of this book.PLEASE do buy it or check it out or something, especially if you are a beleaguered student (graduate or undergrad). I wish I'd had this splendid, readable, erudite analysis to pass around my Victorian Novels seminar in Grad School-sighs-Everybody at the time was reading the banal Feminist tract, The Mad Woman in The Attic (allusion, if you didn't catch it, to Jane Eyre (the novel, not the character). - In any event, this book is simply a joy to read for anybody who loves English literature and splendid writing. My highest praise.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not Your Typical Chesterton Book By Kindle Customer No, this one does not have any of the pithy sayings for which G.K. is famous. But if you are a fan of literature you'll enjoy his take on these Victorian authors. He wrote the book when these authors were still widely read so he assumes the reader knows a lot about them. Even though I'm quite a literature fan, I had only heard of half of them. After reading this book I looked up books by several of the obscure authors he recommended and I can see why they were put to rest. Still, this is a fascinating overview of Victorian novelists.

Publication date: 1913, in the "Home University Library," and yet as unlike a textbook as could be:"... It was latitudinarian, and yet it was limited. It could be content with nothing less than the whole cosmos: yet the cosmos with which it was content was small. It is false to say it was without humour: yet there was something by instinct unsmiling in it. It was always saying solidly that things were 'enough'; and proving by that sharpness (as of the shutting of a door) that they were not enough. It took, I will not say its pleasures, but even its emancipations, sadly. Definitions seem to escape this way and that in the attempt to locate it as an idea. But every one will understand me if I call it George Eliot."Chesterton's style is boisterous and engaging, and there were lots of brilliant remarks throughout that set conventional wisdom (of his day or ours) on its pointy little head. One chapter is about novelists (Dickens, George Eliot, George Meredith and others), one chapter is about poets (Browning Swinburne, Fitzgerald's Rubaiyat). These are framed by chapters about the climate of ideas at the beginning of the age, and at the end:"... The difference that the period had developed can best be seen if we consider this: that while neither was of a spiritual sort, Macaulay took it for granted that common sense required some kind of theology, while Huxley took it for granted that common sense meant having none. Macaulay, it is said, never talked about his religion: but Huxley was always talking about the religion he hadn't got."Here is one more quote which I find perhaps the most thought-provoking:"... It meant a real Victorian talent; that of exploding unexpectedly and almost, as it seemed, unintentionally. Gilbert made good jokes by the thousand; but he never (in his best days) made the joke that could possibly have been expected of him. This is the last essential of the Victorian. Laugh at him as a limited man, a moralist, conventionalist, an opportunist, a formalist. But remember also that he was really a humorist; and may still be laughing at you."

By Nenad Bach Let me start with the statement: Jamie Cohen is a brilliant man. This is not just a book, because it has links to many videos, films etc. This is not just a manual for teachers although every single teacher and a student should read it. This is not just an Autobiography of a man who is in search of his own creativity. This is all above. A new form of literature that combines a practical advice in education that reads like a novel with the touch of glamour, struggle and so much needed solution. Jamie found his home, his domain, his passion and his nobility that only the greatest can find it. It is an easy read with a lot of descriptions that defines that inner space between words and emotions. It is intriguing almost like a thriller deeply rooted in Human Rights issues as well. This is the way all student should be taught in 21st century to unleash their own creativity. If Jamie could be the teacher to all the students in the world, The World would be much better place, with no wars and more justice and happiness for all.

As a trainer and coach I read a lot of books. I'm always looking for a way to make my educational sessions better and more engaging. I picked up Live From Your Class by Jamie Mason hoping to learn a few tricks on how to make my training more humorous - and I got that. What I didn't expect is how massively engaging this entire work is!Jamie Mason uses a ton of very interesting personal experiences to illustrate the tips and tricks he is sharing. It's very engaging. Because I that I couldn't put it down and finished it in three days.Don't let the title of this book fool you. I was expecting a few tips on adding humor to my teaching effort. What I discovered is that in addition to the humor there is a ton of practical, cutting-edge tips on how to engage both young and adult learners. I found the tip lists and summaries extremely illuminating and there is a substantial section at the end with ton of useful resources for trainers and educators.For me this work hit the sweet spot. It was engaging, humorous and loaded with practical tips. What more do you want in a book? For me that's just about perfect.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Get this just for Poe's essay on "The Raven". And the cat essay. By MJP2 Since it's free, there's really no sense in *not* getting it. But what really makes this a good buy is the essay by Edgar Allan Poe detailing step-by-step how he wrote "The Raven". Get it just for that. The only other item that I thought really shined was an essay about a cat. I've never met a more interesting cat. I hate pets, but I had to read about the cat because the essay was just that good. So, yes, pick this up, but aside from what I've mentioned, don't expect too much from it.

By as baby Babylons do SKITS Benjamin Frenklin is a great place to start if you want to know what kind of men combined an interest in science with an active social life when the United Ststes of America needed a constitution that could allow commerce to provide what Nietzsche in Daybreak called the major activity we expect to pass on to our children. Franklin bought a whistle when he was a kid, but he did not get the kind of deal that makes people count American eyeballs now. This book is deeper than a consumer survey. Maybe in spite of itself.

You start out feeling sorry for Joy, the way her family treats her. By the end of the book she haschanged and you are rooting for her. Read this book, you will enjoy it.

As someone who isn't a reader I was amazed at losing myself for sometimes hours in the story. It has a great self-evaluation aspect and Proverbs 31 perspective.

By Robin Bunting This is an amazing story about the spiritual growth of a woman who mistakenly thought of herself as a doormat due to inability to be confrontational. I found myself being very angry with all but two of the characters due to how they treated Joy. Through a very suspenseful mystery, Joy "redefines" herself and discovers the true meaning of a Proverbs 31 Woman. Very well written. I just had to keep reading to find out what happened next. Highly recommend. I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.

It had good flow and lots of detail. It was suspenseful and romantic. It also had a character whom I really just wanted to smack. So all in all, a very well rounded story. I can't wait to read more of this series. I have fallen in love with the characters and can't wait to see what these authors have in store.

By bdouglas@netdoor.com You can see the cracker barrel in your mind and picture the old timers sitting around it listening to stories such as these. The stories come alive and the illustrations are terriffic! If you are from the south you will relate. If you're not from the south (too bad) you will wish you were. Great read, great fun! I recommend it heartily!

Great first reader By Centenos I am always looking for phonics readers for my kids and it is hard to find phonics readers that are truly simple enough for kids just starting out with their reading. The simple stories in this book are a nice intro set for kids who are just beginning with phonics.

I felt a little more emphasis on the plus side of the things Sammy could accomplish instead of everything she wasn't able to do would have been better.
