From Publishers Weekly Heimo Korth was one of the many young men who set out for Alaska in the 1960s and '70s to recreate the life of early fur traders in the American West, a movement first observed in John McPhee's classic Coming into the Country. Journalist Campbell has written a worthy sequel to McPhee's book that is a powerful tale in its own right, focusing solely on Korth, who now "lives more remotely than any other person in Alaska" as one of only seven hunter-trappers with a permit to live in the 19.5-million-acre Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). Korth lives with his wife and two daughters 130 miles above the Arctic Circle, the only settlers for more than 500 miles (250 miles from the nearest road and another 300 miles to the nearest hospital in Fairbanks). Campbell artfully details a number of visits he makes to the Korth family in 2002, as he accompanies Korth on hunting and trapping expeditions that make himâ€"and the readerâ€"feel "transported straight back into the 19th century." He also sympathetically recounts Korth's flight from his abusive Wisconsin father and his reinvention of himself as an Alaskan "legend," a "gun-toting, park-hating antiâ€"animal rights trapper with a soft side"â€"but one who is well respected by managers of the ANWR. From Booklist By the mid-1970s, countercultural attitudes had propelled so many wilderness seekers to Alaska that writer John McPhee gave an account of them in Coming into the Country (1976). Over several visits in 2002, Campbell absorbed the life story of one such emigrant from the lower 48, Heimo Korth, who happens to be his cousin. Korth traps fur-bearing animals to generate what little cash he makes, and hunts caribou, moose, and fowl for his food. Campbell's observation of the shooting and skinning this necessitates is objective, leaving nothing to imagination. Retrospectively, Campbell relates why Korth moved to Alaska (partly due to antagonism with his father), followed by incidents in his marriage to a native woman and their raising of three daughters (one of whom died in an awful canoeing accident) along a remote tributary of the Yukon River. Because the author perceptively describes how teenagers Rhonda and Krin feel about growing up in such isolation, the circle of interest for Campbell's well-organized work will encompass fans of coming-of-age stories in addition to those intrigued by unconventional lifestyles. A fascinating look at an impossibly alien lifestyle By Debra Hamel Heimo Korth has lived in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for nearly thirty years, eking out a subsistence living some 250 miles from the nearest road. He moved to Alaska at twenty, eager to escape an abusive father and unwilling to submit to the yoke of a nine-to-five job. For six years Heimo ("HI-mow") lived alone, trapping and hunting and flying out occasionally with bush pilots to sell his furs. But in 1982 Heimo married Edna, whom he met while walrus hunting on St. Lawrence Island, and she followed her husband to the wilderness. They have lived together since in this desolate place where the sun dips below the horizon in November and isn't seen again until January, where temperatures range from a balmy 80 degrees to 50 below. They and their daughters live a semi-nomadic life, moving each spring from one of their three cabins to another so as not to deplete the animal populations in any one area. Every summer they spend six weeks in Fort Yukon, population 750, stocking up on supplies and getting a small taste of civilization.James Campbell, who happens to be Heimo's cousin, visited the Korths several times beginning in 2002. In telling Heimo's story Campbell juxtaposes descriptions of life in the Arctic--the logistics of carving up a dead moose, the efficient reuse of toilet paper as a firestarter--with stories of Heimo's boyhood in Wisconsin and discussion of the politics of land apportionment in Alaska. James Campbell breathes so much life in every word and every paragraph, that it is one of those rare books that is hard to put down. My husband couldn't believe that I would be so taken in by a story about the wilderness.Yet, the character development; the smooth writing style that describes the trials and hardships; all of the history that I learned made this such a three dimensional and rare treat. If only James Campbell had other books that I could purchase!I read a ton of books and this is one of the few that I will definitely recommend to everyone that I know.

Little House in the Big Arctic By bensmomma James Campbell reports the life of Heimo Korth and the family he has raised, the last family of trappers to remain in the National Arctic Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.Although this book has one foot in the "wilderness adventure can you believe anyone can survive this" genre (Heimo regularly traps in -50 weather and even jogs in -20 weather), it is also a kind of domestic family saga, almost a "Little House on the Prairie" but the prairie is the Arctic.Heimo, his wife Edna, and daughters Rhonda and Krin, face near tragedies and real tragedies lost in blizzards, or facing a broken-down snow machine miles from home, or jumping from ice flow to ice flow in desparate hope of making it back to shore, or falling through overflow ice on the river. Remarkably though, the main thing I'll remember about this book is the sense it conveys of Heimo's redemption (lost and alcoholic, he came to Alaska to trap in the 70s, but dried up and built a family there), and of the love and affection of a family who have no one but each other for months on end. This is a real testament to Campbell's skill as a journalist and author.The adventure and drama of the Arctic keep the reader turning pages like a good mystery but the after-effect is one of love and integrity.

Lewis This book will teach you grammar better than any other grammar text I have encountered in all my years of teaching. It is very carefully organized and thorough. The author uses interesting, engaging sentences to illustrate each point of grammar and asks the reader to identify the elements of focus in a number of subsequent sentences--that is all. There is very little theoretical explanation and no answer sheet is supplied. The book goes into subtle aspects of English sentence structure in this way and covers lessons rarely taught nowadays. It was originally meant for junior high school children, but now I would recommend it to any TEACHER who really wants to understand traditional grammar theory. The earlier sections covering the basics of (verb, subject, prepositional phrases, etc.) are not beyond the reach of most pre-teen students today, although most of the later chapters might be too intricate for them. I used the book with college-level people and they enjoyed it. Nowadays since youngsters are generally unfamiliar with grammar terms, this book is useful because it minimizes the necessity to remember terms and concentrates on giving readers plenty of practice identifying the various sentence parts in order to really understand them.

Bullying is very prominent in society today. It happens in the workplace as well as on school campuses around the U.S. The author is on a mission to educate school administrators, teachers, parents and children on the impact bullying can have on our children.Faith in God is what made Christine and Jordan overcome the stigma of being labeled a bully. I applaud them both for never losing Faith and believing anything is possible when you trust God. He does have a plan for all of us.

A Courageous Mother's Battle for Truth and Justice By Carol Classen As a retired PhD counselor and consultant for children and youth, I was especially inspired by Christine and her son's journey in seeking truth and justice. A sensitive, kind and spiritual 10 year old boy was falsely accused of being a bully and thrust into the juvenile justice system. A false accusation can happen to anyone and Jesus Christ is the prime example. In my private practice, I counselled children and teenagers in Grand Prairie. School administrators unfairly and unjustly caused potential damage to a child's future just so they could save face by a mistaken identity. Jordan's future could have been damaged if it wasn't for his mother who refused to give in. Equipped with courage, integrity, unwavering faith, and great love for her child, Christine dealt with this situation with impressive tenacity and class. In all my years of counselling, I never witnessed such a demonstration of righteous determination in righting the wrongs of our system.Our system has so many deep flaws. In Grand Prairie, I witnessed how the law enforcement, courts, and educational institutions strategize together in false charges based on personal grudges. There are people in Texas who made a lot of money by criminalizing the behaviors of children. Contractors and the buddies of politicians made bundles of money by building private prisons. I worked as a case manager for Medicaid's complex psychiatric cases in Texas. There is very little effective intervention but plenty of private youth prisons. ValueOptions is a behavioral health care management company for children and youth receiving Medicaid in Dallas county. The greediness of ValueOptions has greatly decreased counselling services for the underprivileged child in Dallas County. ValueOptions drove away many behavioral health care providers in Dallas county. ValueOptions, other private companies, and certain entities of our government, legal and educational systems are good examples of "the love of money is the root of all evil," The author of this valuable book has inspired me once again to be an advocate for mothers and children. This is a "must read" book for everyone. Christine's courageous battle with an intimidating system brings to the surface important issues that all of us need to consider and take to heart. In the last chapters, the author gives valuable advice on preparing parents and children in avoiding real threats in our society. God bless Christine, a mover and a shaker who works diligently for the well-being of all our precious children.

The writing seemed very disjointed, little short sentences. Then the POOR Ex Con got to be a little tedious, poor me no one should hire me, I'm no good, never will be, don't know why she's nice to me.....the whole book is Poor Bobby. Anyway I for thru it, took me two days. Since there are two authors for this book and I have never read the other author I am not sure who wrote what. But will continue to follow MS Parker.

The two main characters had my interest from the beginning, but I would have liked to see a little more development of the relationship between them. There is so much hope of redemption in this story, and Carly is the perfect person to offer that to ex-con Bobby. I don't read books twice, but this one I just might. It's that good! I loved it!I have only one criticism of the "book" and it's an important one. This is almost certainly directed at the publisher, NOT the author: why put a guy with tattoos on the cover when the main character specifically states "there's a reason I don't have tattoos." Really? Did you even read the book? It made me really mad to discover that in the story after having the cover model in my head.

After facing another setback, he had no idea that a walk home he wasn’t looking forward to was going to change his life so drastically…Carly Prince was beautiful, funny and totally out of his league. He had no idea who she was but apparently she was famous. All he came to see though was someone he could love… Thrust into a life he wasn’t ready for he was going to take things as they came… and keep his desires to himself.“They liked her. He**, I liked her, and not just because I’d spent half of the night before dreaming about getting her naked. She was funny, and sweet, but with an acerbic sense of humor.”I couldn’t wait to start this beautifully covered, starting over story. Bobby is an underdog in the true sense of the word. He just wants to live his life, peacefully and rightfully. If only something, anything, would go his way. With the label “ex-con” on his resume he was facing an uphill battle but I love how his fortunes change on a dime. Or, in this case, on a fateful, wrong turn.Told entirely from Bobby’s point of view, the events as they unfold are described with humour and a matter-of-fact take on life that I couldn’t help but fall a little bit more in love with… I really would have loved to hear Carly’s point of view as her story became Bobby’s as well. Supporting characters became so much more as they embraced Bobby into their family. Potty training can be one of the most stressful times of parenting during the toddler stage, but it something that must be done. Sometimes the longer we put it off, the worse it is for everyone involved. And let’s face it; diapers and wipes are expensive, so the earlier you can potty train the easier the strain on your budget, too. The three-day method can work with children that are as young as fifteen months old. There are signs that a child is ready for potty training (see the chapter outlining these signs), and as long as the child is exhibiting a fair amount of these signs, it is appropriate to start the potty training process. The three-day process is also most successful on kids younger than twenty-eight months and usually the closer to three a child gets the less likely the method is to work (again see the section on readiness signs for children).

And for all parents who are stepping up to start training their kid for potty need to remember that there is no magic that could train a child for something in just 3 days. This book too, outlines some basic stuff you need to do (some are purely common sense), but then it will just give the child a feel of what is being expected of them. For children, the repetition plays an important role for them to understand, so putting them to potty again and again is the only underlying fact. So, don't be mislead or falsely assume from the title that your child will be trained in 3 days.

To Love And Be Loved By Mary Clark Again, another absolutely wonderful story from the author, which I thoroughly enjoyed reading; there was so much to keep the reader interested. Growing up, Francesco’s mother and father rarely had time for her; she had everything, except attention. Adam is the first to show Francesco any kind of love and she is besotted with him; she likes giving herself to him and he likes taking, although she wonders if it is enough. Rick is engaged to Caroline, but his job is interfering with their relationship. Francesco’s father receives a death threat, so Rick is assigned to protect Francesco 24/7. It is during this time that Adam becomes more possessive with Francesco, introducing her to his darker side. When the death threat is mitigated, Rick still wants to protect Francesco – realising he has feelings for her. Accompanying the couple to a Club, Adam publicly embarrasses Francesco and goes too far. Francesco is distraught when Rick gives her damaging background information on Adam; she cannot stay with him, but will she regret her decision. Later Francesco discovers that her father’s indiscretion is the reason for the death threat when a man pulls a gun on her at her apartment, but yet again Rick is there to intervene. Rick tells Francesco about his break-up with Catherine, which was a mutual decision. Francesco knows that without Catherine’s willingness to let Rick go she might never have experienced what it felt like to be loved so deeply. I would certainly have no hesitation in recommending this book, it was a pleasure to read. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

It infuriates her friend to know end an upsets his schedule an demands upon her.The bodyguard has him checked out he feels he's shady to him which comes true he starts gradually changing her mind about him an his ways.Strong feelings developed between her an the bodyguard an turn her world upside down.Also theirs the case concerning the death threats still unsolved.There's plenty of action,drama,an intense sexual action an a lot of romance to the end.18+Buy book won't be disappointed.Great author an her chain of books check them out.

I felt so bad for her because I felt he was using and manipulating her. She was so needy. But her strength came when she needed it. Rick was in a relationship he couldn't feel anything for Francesca, he was just supposed to guard her, right?This book sucks you in, so have some Kleenex handy. Sometimes I was so mad I could yell. But take the journey, then smile at the end of the ride.

From the editing, to the cover design, to the way the storyline flowed, it was well worth the read. Next, on to Vince... I'm sure the first thing everyone want's to do is condemn him for his behavior. What I took from the story is his situation hits close to home for alot of folks. The rollarcoaster of emotions and events portrayed throughout the book allow readers to get a glimpse of the "other" side. The side of the oppressor that in some light could also be seen as the victim. Not of a crime but of the heart. You get a front row seat of how someone could be caught up in love, while at the same time hurting the one's they love. And though the answer may seen simple at first, after reading this story you may have second thoughts. I recommend this book to anyone who's ever whished for love and found it in more ways than one! Great job Marlon! For the price you can't beat this read!

I can honestly say I never thought he should've entertained Mykael. Her clinginess and constant questions made me feel as if he should stay clear of her. Ksenia was different but for the most part she seemed like the better choice. I liked Traci because she always had her best friends back. Vincent realized he was missing something in his life but went about things all wrong. Alejandra and Jeenevah both were scandalous and straight trifling. I guess that's what he got for not going about things the right way. The back and forth, as well as the lies should've been enough for Vincent to make a decision. Monica was beyond thirsty and I was glad someone put her in her place. It was only a matter of time before things hit the fan. Wow Mykael tried it at the end and I'm glad Vincent had his people look into things. Based on the ending Vincent may finally be ready to get some act right.

I can't believe the lengths he went through to find a mate, then when he found two amazing ladies he became a selfish lover. Seeing both of them at once not realizing who he truly love.Makael, is a nice woman and in fact Vince personal assistant yet when she let out her true feelings for him, one thing led to another, and Vince ended up confused as ever.Ksenia, she's okay another she had the finer things in life, and did things for Vince that left him star struck yet when it comes to matters of the heart Vince didn't know what to do because he's in love with two women.It was intriguing how everyone met up, but heartbreaking how everything played out. I'm not to fond of Vince decision but I'm glad he finally realized who captured his heart.

About the Author Mick Farren divides his time between music and literature, with digressions into psychedelic agitprop. His life as a recording artist began by fronting the anarchic pre-punk The Deviants and has continued with his lyrics being recorded by Metallica, Motorhead, Hawkwind and Wayne Kramer. At various points along that timeline highway from Young Punk to Grand Old Man Of The Counterculture, he's ­been-often simultaneously-a critic, commentator, novelist, journalist, polemicist, political activist, lyricist, rock performer, screenwriter, poet, memoirist, raconteur, life and soul of many parties and a member in better than good standing of the Most Honorable Association Of Cultural Infidels. I haven't bought and read a book I've been this happy with in a very long time By Chad Eagleton A must-have for both longtime fans and newcomers curious about this lost talent. Arranged around several reoccuring themes, Mick Farrens's last collection includes a sampling of everything from his long career: bits of memoir, reminiscences, rock journalism, cultural criticism, political writings, interviews with everyone from Johnny Cash to Gore Vidal, song lyrics, unpublished fragments, blog posts, a sampling of his nonfiction books, and a few excerpts from his novels.The collection is just a tad heavy on the rock journalism for my tastes. Also, Mick included these fascinating side notes that give you a little bit of insight into several of the pieces, however, when one of the exerpts doesn't have a note this makes the typographic alignment a little off putting. Other than those minor gripes, I haven't bought and read a book I've been this happy with in a very long time.

By Chris Estey Really, really enjoyed this, though there are some more obscure columns for fanzines I wish could have been included. A second volume would be awesome, though I'm sad he won't be here to annotate it. R.I.P. in love, mighty Mick Farren. Crucial.

Not a helpful book By Jason S Though there are a few helpful tidbits in here, part of the problem is that it reads like a wish-list for women, and uses many cognitive traps (such as many "should" statements) which elicit guilt and shame in a man, which is simply not helpful. I think a book written by a confident, assertive man would be more helpful - one that focuses on finding a woman that actually wants to be a partner with her boyfriend in parenting his kids versus one that just trying to get over her sense of entitlement of being the center of attention would be far more instructive. Women who want to be the center of man's attention can seem very charming initially but ultimately will cause misery for a man in his relationship with her if he tries to "please the un-pleaseable". A book that focused more on how a man can balance giving all of the proper attention to his kids while still giving proper attention to his girlfriend would be more helpful - but the girlfriend has to understand that the kids come first, and that she can either be a partner with her boyfriend in parenting his kids or she can be upset about not getting 100% of his attention, which is unrealistic and not practical.

Author was lazy and didn't do any research By Gregory When I first saw this book online, I was excited that there was finally a book for men about how to balance dating and raising kids. Now, I will admit that my situation is somewhat unusual as a single gay dad, but I found this book to have little useful information. Almost everything in it was quite obvious.Moreover, the book was not well researched. The author kept quoting this one (psychologist?) over and over. It almost felt like she had a cultist reverence for this one "expert." I would have prefered if the author did more research and quoted a variety of sources. Unfortunately, due to this book's lack of research, I was left with many unanswered questions.On the plus side, this book did make me appreciate how difficult it is to date and find someone once you have kids. I guess if you find someone good, you should do what you can to keep them!

By jane ganahl Ellie Slott Fisher has written a guide for single dads - something we've needed for a long time! - and managed to make it humane, funny, whip-smart and totally useful. A great new addition to the dating genre. Brava Ellie!

Excerpt from Essay on ManBathurst in 1763, was told by him in still stronger language ' that the Essay on Man was composed by Lord Bolingbroke in prose, and that Mr. Pope did no more than put it into verse.' Dr. Blair reported this at the time to Boswell, who repeated it to Johnson. Johnson's immediate remark was, ' Depend upon it, sir, this is too strongly stated. Pope may have had from Bolingbroke the philosophic stamina of his Essay; and admitting this to be true, Lord Bathurst did not intentionally falsify. But the thing is not true in the latitude that Blair seems to imagine. We are sure that the poetical imagery, which makes a great part of the poem, is Pope's own.' (Boswell, Life, vol. 7. p. 283.)This extemporised judgment of Johnson probably is as near the truth as we can get. It was from Bolingbroke's conversation that the poet derived not only many of his ideas, but the impulse to meddle with speculations for which he was little fit.
