By Formerly Anonymous I own two copies of the first edition of this book (one for me, and one for homeschooled high schoolers), and I am working my way through the second edition. This is a great book for those who want to learn how to read, analyze, and understand literature. It's the literary analysis class I wish I had had in college wrapped up in a book that I can read at my own pace. WEM begins with a section on how to read and take notes in a way that leads to deeper understanding of the material. The subsequent chapters of WEM are organized by genre of literature: fiction, autobiography, history and politics, drama, and poetry. (The 2nd edition of WEM adds the genre of science.) For each genre, a list of books is given. Each book is then described in brief summary. Hundreds of "great books" lists exists, but WEM recommends preferred editions (and SWB's advice is good!) and her advice on HOW to read and ANALYZE is spot on. For those who want to know the basics of the great books but have no desire to read them: this is the book for you! Bluff your way through book club! College students who need to understand the classics: this book is for you! Homeschooling families who want to teach the great books at the high school level, but need some hand-holding: this is for you! WEM makes the classics approachable and understandable.

The Well-Educated Mind is a gu By Tristan Tack This book enriched my life. For centuries, people have improved and educated themselves simply by reading. We can still do this, independently and cheaply. No expensive university education needed.Throughout the ages, the world has produced written works – epics, plays, poetry, scientific findings, philosophies, histories, memoirs, biographies, novels… The works that are particularly helpful, insightful, or entertaining endure and become classics. Authors are influenced by the classics of the previous ages, referencing and building on them. The western world has collected its own classics into something that we now call The Great Books. The Well-Educated Mind is a guide to reading these Great Books, written to help those of us who are not familiar with the classics or only read them in high school, before we were grown-up enough to appreciate them. Part One gives a simple, universal procedure for reading anything more deeply. There is a section of historical background for each type of literature. It is easy to read. It made me laugh. Part Two contains a manageable list of classics of different types, with summaries and suggestions for the most readable translations and editions. (The author points out that books like The Complete Works of Shakespeare are difficult to read in the bath.) There are useful links. This second edition contains updated links and recommended versions. I am especially glad to see that a new section on scientific classics has been added.For me, the heart of the book is the list of questions to keep in mind as one reads. They are universal, not specific to any particular book. They are brilliant. Over time, these questions became part of my thinking. I am technically-minded. The Well-Educated Mind has given me the literature education I skipped in high school and college. I used the first edition of The Well-Educated Mind for homeschooling high school literature. Amazingly, my sports oriented, technical-minded boys read many of the classics happily and painlessly! I found the universal questions could be applied to any book. We used them for scifi as well as The Iliad. Our reading of Great Books has given us a common ground on which to base discussions. It also has enlightened us to a world of classical references in modern movies and literature that we had previously missed. The recent robotics movie Ex Machina, for example, contains references to Plato. The effects of this book have been surprising and enduring. It changed our conversations. If I asked the boys about the movie saw with their scout troop, instead of just saying it was good, they shared interesting observations based on those internalized universal questions. Some of those led to important discussions, the sort that parents always want to have with their teenagers. They are in their twenties now and we are still sharing our observations about what we read and watch. The discussions are more interesting than ever, as they tackle the issues in their adult lives and the world at large. They (and I) continue to read Great Books on their own, something I never imagined our technical family would do. I highly recommend this book!

Where Susan Wise Bauer shines isn't just telling you WHAT to read (though it is a stellar reading list) but inspiring you to actually want to do so. I've read many books about books, and this is one of the best. A fantastic reference for anyone who feels the gaps in their education and isn't sure how to go about closing them. And don't skip any of the introductory essays; they're the best part, and something you can't get from a list off the internet.
