Tackles some tough issues By Donna Repsher I received a copy of this novel from the author in exchange for an honest review and here it is. 3.5 starsSemper Fi tries to be more than a mere stepbrother romance. The stepbrother in question, Erik, is a Marine. While on active duty, he loses half of one of his legs to an IED, is given an honorable discharge and sent home, although he would much prefer getting back to his unit as he viewed the Marine Corps as his career. His stepsister, Darlene, has psychological issues of her own. She's a wild one, who has felt neglected, unappreciated and abandoned by her father and stepmother because of the attention and praise lauded on Erik and his accomplishment, and she's hated her stepbrother for years because she believes he's the cause of all that's wrong with her life. She's overweight, tatted, and has issues with self-esteem and alcohol. Yet, when Erik returns home from Afghanistan, these two broken souls seem to recognize each other.While I commend the author for tackling the weighty and timely subject of PTSD in an erotic romance novel, I found myself unmoved by either of the main characters--I simply didn't like their personalities, and while there are a number of explicit sex scenes in this book, I didn't find any of them to be particularly erotic. Erik's easy acceptance of the loss of his leg was simply too cavalier to be believed. It may be that this reader is simply too old to identify with Erik and Darlene, certainly when it comes to the subject of tattoos, drunken sexual escapades, and bad decision-making. It might also be that I'm far too experienced with and knowledgeable about the effects of PTSD in my own life to find that aspect of this novel truly believable. I was surprised that in addition to the physical rehab Erik receives, there was no mention made of him getting psychological help or counseling from the VA or Wounded Warriors to deal with his PTSD, and although there's is certainly enough introspection on the part of Erik and Darlene, much of it was redundant and seemed like filler. I also was surprised by the easy and non-judgmental parental acceptance of Erik and Darlene as a couple. While I find nothing taboo about the step-sibling relationship, in reality I believe that most parents would probably take issue with the ease and speed at which Erik and Darlene's romance develops.While this novel is far more topically ambitious than most of the other stepbrother romances I've read, I believe it will be far better received, accepted and enjoyed by a somewhat more youthful audience.
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyable By Lexee Tigger Darlene and Erik were interesting characters. They both have issues that they need to deal with. Darlene is in a better spot for the most part, at least with the acting out aspect, than Erik but that allows her to know where he is coming from and to help him. Erik is upset that he had to leave his unit back in Afghanistan. They were a second family and he never saw himself doing anything else so when he comes back injured and forced to retire from the SEALs he has trouble adjusting. Darlene and Erik finally work out some of there childhood issues and are fairly immediately drawn to each other. They don't deny their feelings and instead act on them pretty quickly. They keep it a secret but not for long. When Darlene realizes that Erik just keeps spiraling downward she goes to her parents for back up and help.The characters were well written and the story was enjoyable. The sex is explicit and fairly frequent. The step sibling aspect is never a very big deal for the characters. They don't really have to overcome public opinion on it but you will figure out why as you read it (don't want to spoil anything). I thought it was very interesting the way the injury was written because Erik adjusted to that with no problem, he had a problem with not being able to continue to fight. This story was a little different for me because of that. It feels genuine though and doesn't detract or distract from the story for me. The story flows pretty well and I loved getting to read the epilogue.

By cindyc A great story about our inner demons and how we face them and deal with them on a daily basis. Erik, a wounded marine who expects to heal and be sent back out to battle, suffers a blow when he is told that due to cutbacks, he's going home with a honorary discharge. Not what he was expecting or what he wanted, he finds himself back home, in a dark place. Darlene, his stepsister since early teens, has her own demons she's been battling forever. Some stemming from her own dark areas deep within herself, others spurred on by those around her. Together, they discover that they desperately need each other to try and dig themselves out from the dark recesses of their minds and give themselves the lives they truly want, and with whom they want.A wonderful story that will have you tearing up from time to time, you can't help but feel for these two, as they drag themselves from the dark and flourish in the love of each other. Well written, the author has managed to find a topic that is different from most and turn it into a tale you won't want to put down. Loved this.I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
