About the Author Thomas Bodley (1545-1613) served as a Member of Parliament and a fellow of Merton College, Oxford. Upon retiring from government service, he put his energies and fortune into the founding of the Bodleian Library.

In addition to being Bodley's recollections of his own life, it is virtually the first printed autobiographical work in England, in the form of the classic apologia provita. Written near the end of his life, Bodley gave a brief overview of his accomplishments, and gave his personal reasons for wanting to found a library at Oxford. He stated that he had the resources available and the scholarly drive to see the project through. He wanted to leave a lasting mark on the university by helping to improve its academic resources.
