From the Author The goal of this book is to uplift and inspire. We've all been through some sort of adversity in our lives, by sharing mines, I hope to help others get through their's. I've been through it and came out standing. I want the world to know that they can come out standing too. Stay uplifted and inspired.
About the Author Jana` Chantel is a graduate of Grand Valley State University, where she received a degree in creative writing. Inspired by her own personal tragedies, Jana` lends voice to her pain in hopes of helping other young adults work through their's as well.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An uplifting and well written memoir By Sean Prentiss I'm biased, I admit that, Jana was one of my students. But that might make this review even more honest since I was paid to critique Jana and her ideas for an entire semester.But I just finished Jana's book this morning. I started reading it yesterday and churned through the pages. I'd say, "Time to stop reading," but then I'd think, "One more essay." Her book kept me turning the pages, kept me wanting to see what was coming next.What I loved most about Jana's work was:1. It is sentimental. Jana brings us into her specific world and lets us feel the emotions she feels.2. Jana is unflinching in her honesty toward herself and those around her. She admits to loving people in complex ways. And she shares how the people she loves are complex in good and bad ways. These characters are human.3. The experimental nature of Jana's work. She comes to her truths through so many different and unique and powerful ways. She brings us into the circus of her mind, she takes us to Death Anonymous, she compares journal entries between her and her mother.A great first book by a great student of mine.

Swank With a fascinating true story that sears into the reader's heart, Jana` Chantel presents the details of her tumultuous childhood in Detroit, which are humbly told with the raw language of a woman whose memory of a violent upbringing is still quite fresh in her mind. This book has a bit of everything one would expect from a young woman--truly an adolescent in real-time--living the hard life in a broken Detroit: absent father, gunshot wounds, drug dealing, bad romance, the whole gamut. Throughout the book, Jana` strives to find a bit of normalcy in her chaos. She begins by recalling the death of her mother, who was murdered in cold blood when Jana` was just a year old, and, through her young adult years, the drama continued. Her father, too, met a harsh ending. Jana` was shot by her own brother and had her heart broken by a lying thug. The reader can quickly see that her retelling is a painful reminder of her early struggles in life, but also a catharsis.Into My Mind is a fast read; I finished it in a few short hours. Immediately I felt the need to go back and read it again so I could once more absorb the incredulous details. If you're looking for a sophisticated, polished memoir, this may not be at the top of your list, but she gives you a heartfelt, in-your-face story, never hiding the blemishes in herself or the other characters. I'm not sure she ever found the normalcy she was searching for, but at the end, you will be left with a sense that Jana` has embraced her own version of normal. Like the city of Detroit itself, Jana` is driven to fight for a better reality.

We had to read one of our pieces to the class at the end of the semester. By the time Jana' was done reading her story, I had tears at the corner of my eyes and a catch in my throat (that one you get when you are overcome with emotion). Her story, a memoir about the closeness and tragedies of her family unit, was written with honesty, rawness, and love--love for her family and the art of writing.I've had the pleasure of reading many pieces of Jana's since that day including all of the tales in her book "Into My Mind." Each of her stories brings to the reader that same honesty, rawness, and love of family and for the craft that I saw in that first piece long ago. You will not be disappointed if you read this book. It will make you fall in love with her words and, hopefully, it will make you realize that (no matter what circumstances are placed in front of you), you can survive--more than that--you can thrive just as this strong young woman.This memoir is a must read. The stories are full of the beauty and tragedy of human existence. And, they are full of creative formatting and storytelling.
