Being Floridian born and bred, Alfie Black didn't usually 'do' winters. Lily Parnell, his girl, was from London and was used to seasons. Winter was one of her favorites. As famous musicians both were used to living their lives in the limelight. Alfie, a rock legend, and Lily also rock star in her own right, were propelled to 'Rock Royalty' just by being together. Add their close friend, Rick Fars, another 'Rock God' into the equation, and it was easy to see how difficult it was to maintain any kind of friendships without the media tagging along looking for the latest scoop. These days one never seemed to be mentioned without the other. However, a rare window of opportunity in all of their schedules arose and so did Alfie's desire. With Christmas only two weeks away and eight days of downtime, Alfie seized it with both hands. Three rockers, alcohol, a cabin in the snow, and time on their hands, how does that go down?

Everything Is Yours (An Everything Novella), by K. L. Shandwick

About the Author Writing came relatively later in life for me after a challenge by a friend led to The Everything Trilogy. I love creating new characters and story lines. Writing is a form of escapism from my day job which can be difficult at times. I have worked in the health and social care sector for most of my adult life, so to have the opportunity to step out of this serious role and create colourful characters is very rewarding. I enjoy where they take me and each character has his or her own voice. I don't use prepared outlines for my stories preferring the characters to take their own direction as the story progresses.

(Attraction/addiction....pssht...whatever ) I have read some of Ms. Shandwick's Gibson series, but haven't gotten into the Everything series yet (although trust me, it has been added to the tbr now.) But I can tell you that this can definitely be read as a stand alone (as long as you are prepared to become addicted and HAVE to know more about Alfie, Lily and Jack - only fair to throw that warning in. Hey, at least there are more books available! )Even without knowing the background of the characters, it is easy enough to get a feel for their personalities and just immerse yourself in this sweet and sexy holiday novella. There are plenty of laughs and enough angsty moments to keep it interesting (most based on the same things that cause most relationship drama no matter who you are - insecurities, which cause trust issues, and, too much testosterone. Lol) It is a novella, so it was easily a one sitting read for me, but I found it perfect for the upcoming holiday season. For adult audiences only for explicit sexual situations.I was gifted an ARC for an honest review.

On March 1, 2010, Elizabeth Hugo’s life changed dramatically when her ninety-two-year-old father, Victor Mazzullo, moved into her home. Blind, diabetic, and suffering from dementia, her papa required total care for his every need. As her daily life drastically transformed, Elizabeth soon realized she would have to rely not only on herself, but also on her faith as she learned to listen for God’s guidance.

In her inspirational memoir, Elizabeth shares poignant anecdotes and applicable Scriptures that provide insight into the challenges, joys, and frustrations that accompanied her spiritual journey caring for her father in his final years. As her role shifted from daughter to primary caregiver, Elizabeth recalls how she dealt with the subsequent emotional impact, realized her limitations, accepted help from others, and relied on prayer for strength. Buoyed through her struggles by her faith, Elizabeth learned how to walk through each day knowing she was just as needy and dependent on her “Papa” God for His love as her father was on her for his care.

Written in devotional form, Life Lessons from My “Papa” shares practical tips, seasoned advice, and compassionate wisdom for any caregiver desiring inspiration.

By Mary Beth I was very touched by Elizabeth Hugo's book , the story of her walk with the Lord and her walk in taking care of her Papa. I took care of my mother for 4 months before she passed away. and this true experience of Elizabeth's journey, helped me in healing from the loss of my mom. Elizabeth's strong faith in the Lord and leaning on the promises of God, while being the primary caretaker of her loving Papa will fill you with inspiration and courage as you walk in the role of being the caretaker of your parents. I recommend this easy reading book, filled with inspiration and love.

I want to take my time and read it again, so I can really meditate on the life lessons and the spiritual truths. You will enjoy and learn from this book even if you are not a caregiver. Makes you consider life and death and the place God has in the midst of every situation. Highly recommend.

Excerpt from Memories and MilestonesLife is a unity in spite of the lightning changes of scene that flash across its vistas, and shock us with an awe inspiring sense of dislocation. Behind all there is a steady, moving power; and the scenes are related. The whole of any life, - the whole of any epoch, - is past and gone in a moment; and, behold, it then appears to be stamped all over with a kind of identity: it is unmistakably one thing. But we cannot peep behind this curtain of the figure and find out what all our present thoughts signify. Therefore anyone who publishes portraits and memories, or who reprints little addresses upon current history, will do well to refrain from any parade of philosophy in a preface. One of the deepest impulses in man is the impulse to record, - to scratch a drawing on a tusk or keep a diary, to collect sagas and heap cairns. This instinct as to the enduring value of the past is, one might say, the very basis of civilization.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Nobody did, and there are artifacts such as bad line breaks (quotation marks beginning or ending a line), amusing and annoying misprints--0 B K for Phi Beta Kappa, "Board o$ Visitors", Pa-gliacci', and so on--oddly narrow lines where I suppose a picture must have been, captions included though the photos are gone, "Section 1" through "Section n" rather than the essay titles heading chapters, and no doubt other problems I've forgotten. I'm no expert on copyright, but I don't see why someone shouldn't simply reproduce the page images. That would give a handsomer and more accurate book.Though I dislike the production, I'm glad to have read the essays. The best of them are collected in _Unbought Mind_ (which Illinois has allowed to go out of print), but the essays on President Eliot and Charles Eliot Norton among others were new to me.

Excerpt from The Symbolist Movement in LiteratureMay I dedicate to you this book on the Symbolist movement in literature, both as an expression of a deep personal friendship and because you, more than any one else, will sympathise with what I say in it, being yourself the chief representative of that movement in our country? France is the country of movements, and it is naturally in France that I have studied the development of a principle which is spreading throughout other countries, perhaps not less effectually, if with less definite outlines. Your own Irish literary movement is one of its expressions; your own poetry and A. E.'s poetry belong to it in the most intimate sense. In Germany it seems to be permeating the whole of literature, its spirit is that which is deepest in Ibsen, it has absorbed the one new force in Italy, Gabriele d'Annunzio.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. When I first stumbled across this book, I went through one of my deepest awakenings and haven't stopped since. The Symbolist Movement in Literature is a must for any concerned with poetry and the poetic process. There is a common thread in poetry that has been carried from ancient Greece to the present (though deeply buried now) and one of its strongest showings occurs with the writers reported on in this book. Symons does not get super scholastic (partly because scholars and the modern scholarly anathema wasn't as menacing of a problem as it is now) but he treats the writers and their material as one with the wide-eyed wonder of a quiet witness to one of the most remarkable periods in ALL of literature.

17 of 22 people found the following review helpful. Interesting, but unremarkable By Gayle Skowronski Symons was a poet and critic of the Symbolist movement, and this book was meant to be a general introduction to the French Symbolists. As an introduction, it is superb--it familiarized me with the works, lives, and styles of many important Symbolist writers such as Nerval, Merimee, Villiers, Verlaine, etc. There is an appendix which includes writers that aren't really Symbolist, like Flaubert, Balzac, Goncourt, but even this appendix is informative and interesting. However, when the work tries to go beyond a mere descriptive primer, it fails. His attempts to define Symbolism are muddled and contradictory. His "interpretations" of Rimbaud and Verlaine are just completely off base. Basically, this book is a light, basic introduction to French Symbolist authors, and it loses its charms when it tries to be critical or definitive.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Literary Study By KLuisa I enjoyed this author's poetic brilliance in discussing the relation between a symbol and the infinite. What I did not realize, when I purchased the book, is that it is substantially a collection of essays on particular authors: Balzac. Jusmans, Rimbaud, Maeterlinck, Flaubert, etc.

Excerpt from Credulity and Incredulity, in Things Natural, Civil, and DivineThere may be a time for that, if God please. It shall now suffice to tell thee, that about three years ago and somewhat better, being in London, I was seized upon with a cold, and shortness of breath, which was so troublesome, that I went to an intimate friend, and learned Physician, for help, who made no question, but in few days he would cure me, and to that end, prescribed some things. But before many days were over, himself ended his life; in whose death, good learning (ancient, I mean) had a great loss. But the comfort is, which I can witness, he died a Christian. After him, the cause still continuing, I had recourse unto another, of the same profession, whom though I knew not before, yet I found him very friendly, and so far as I could judge, very rational in his prescriptions. But notwithstanding such help, the disease increasing, rather than abating; I at last, resolved, with Gods help, for Canterbury again, which I did think many times, I should never see more.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He does not just defend Christianity, he also defends the Greek and Latin ancients. Is faith in reason a valid choice? Is any belief correct if it claims religion? Is any belief correct if it claims reason?"From ungrounded belief, gross superstition, by which true religion is not a little infected and adulterated, hath proceeded: but, on the contrary right down Athesim (whether openly proffered, or palliated, as the fashion is:) by which all sense of piety, all sense of immortality, being taken away, and nothing left to man, but what is common to bruts, (since that reason, confined to things sensible and perishable, is little better than sense, and sense, in bruts, is by many deemed, and called reason) man may truly be said, to be metamorphed into another creature." (2) Casaubon attacks "superstition" as destroying faith, that is, unfounded and foolish religious fables. On the other hand, not to believe in any future life, only material and nothing spiritual, makes man equal to animals. And reason, only based on observation, is then really just "sense" or a reaction to the visible. This is what happened to Locke's empiricism. It grew into a "faith" in feeling and personal interpretation of reality.Which side does Casaubon support? He answers: "neither indeed is it absolutely determinable, which of the two, Credulity, or Incredulity, is most dangerous, or blamable." (7) He wants to present the benefits of both."It must be acknowledged in general, that no Science, or Contemplation doth afford more wonders, and more abstract from all materiality, (Theology being excepted) than the Mathematics, or Mathematical conclusions." (24) He sees the tremendous draw of mathematics to replace theology. "I hope, then, it will not be required, that Divinity shall be tried by the Mathematics, and made subservient them; which yet the temper of some men of this age doth seem to threaten, who scares will allow anything else, worthy a man's study; and then, what need of Universities." The Universities then focused on Theology and the ancients, not mathematics. Casaubon was correct, the trust, even worship of mathematics, is a dominate force in the present. Einstein is the new saint and intellectual ability is key to political respect, not morality.Casaubon went on to other themes. I attempted to follow them, but the problem of old spelling, no paragraphs, convoluted sentences, obscure references was to much. I gave up.

I don't get to read many books these days with little ones around the house, so this was a real treat. There is something about this author's writing that manages to take situations that can be so dark and helpless and find a quiet brightness that is somehow beautiful. I found that as I was reading the book the world around me looked to be a brighter place. Her main characters see the world through a lens of love that looks past outer circumstances and visual appearance and inspires me to do the same. How can I love these people...I'd highly recommend this book for anyone who has struggled, or anyone who might struggle in the future. It is a fun and engaging read, with characters who jump out of the book and into your heart. Check it out!

This is a beautiful and and heartwarming story centered around, Sienna, a young married woman and her tea shop. She faces her own trials and yet manages to minister to others through her shop. It is a wonderful story of God' love and grace and how He meets the needs of hurting people by using those around us. I was pulled into the story line and Sienna's life from the first pages. I was given a copy of this book in return for an honest review, and I definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys good Christian fiction that revolves around wonderful characters and an inspiring story line.

Brune A truly inspirational story of how faith, love, and friendships hold us together and guide us through our worst of times. Having already experience loss of a child and now facing the possible loss of her husband, Sienna's tea shop holds her together through the teas she serves and her customers who help to sustain her. Beautiful character development and very engaging.
