He intrigued me and I wanted to read his story.As with the other stories Zack and Samantha are former Military. Both of them overcoming different obstacles in their lives. They met previously through mutual friends and there is an attraction between them they are nervous to explore. Then one day Zack decides he’s is going to take the plunge, tell Samantha how he feels. He’s tired of being alone and hopes for that connection he thinks he can have with her.Samantha is scared to get close to Zack. He’s a great guy but younger than her. She is unsure if she can get that close to anyone after her time as a Prisoner of War. When Zack makes his feelings clear to her, she takes a leap of faith and gives it a chance. Can one night lead to something more?I liked this story which I found to be a sweet romance with a little heat thrown in. I read this book in a day. It has good friends, who in their own way are family, and a hope for a new love.

A quick read, it still gives the punch of a rich story.Centering around a beach party, we not only get a clear sense of who these characters are, but a view of their circle of friends and the support that surrounds them. Despite their obvious attraction, Zach and Samantha both struggle with trauma that make sharing their desire difficult, and makes routing for them even easier. You can't help but feel their struggle, and the sizzle between them. When they finally let go and break through their barriers, it's hot, hot, hot... Well worth the read!

Lieutenant Commander Samantha Whittaker now is in the Coast Guard after being captured and tortured by the Taliban while serving in the Army. Her scars are on the inside and she is having difficulty connecting with others and opening up about her experiences. In Embrace the Night these two find a common ground and start building a relationship after connecting on a personal level and communicating their fears and facing them together. It is a sweet love story of healing of two heroes.I purchased this book as part of an anthology.

Good, but not completely satisfying By Reliquiae I was led to this book by reading Andrew Lang's reflections on Robert Louis Stevenson in his Adventures Among Books. Lang was enamored by Stevenson's writing, as am I. However, a lot of Stevenson's own writing about writing left me less than satisfied. I didn't find the TOC in this edition for Kindle to be active (although a previous one did); however, the footnotes are.The first chapter, "On Some Technical Elements of Style in Literature," was perhaps the most practical for writers, but it was almost as tedious to read as the essay's title suggests. Other essays, like "Books Which Have Influenced Me," were far more interesting in helping to uncover how Stevenson's thinking was shaped by a few important authors. "Not all men can read all books," he wrote, "it is only in a chosen few that any man will find his appointed food." In the essay, "A Note on Realism," Stevenson discusses the change in literature in his day, the move away from idealism to realism. There is a danger in realism, he cautions, of sacrificing beauty and significance while pursuing the passion missing in idealism. "Breathing as we do the intellectual atmosphere of our age, we are more apt to err upon the side of realism than to sin in quest of the ideal."That last 3 essays in this volume move away from technical and obscure information about writing to useful discussions about 2 of his own books. The essay about his first novel, and my favorite, Treasure Island, was very enjoyable. I was surprised to learn that what began as a map he drew of an imaginary island grew to be the adventure story that has influenced practically all other pirate stories. He claims to have taken inspiration for his characters from numerous literary sources. But the plot was rooted in his map. The concluding chapters are about another of his novels, The Master of Ballantrae. The first of these concerns the genesis of story. The last chapter is the make-believe preface he added to the second edition of the novel.Altogether, these 7 essays, some more helpful or more appealing than others, reveal the sources and processes Stevenson and other writers use. While there is some help here in understanding the mind of this great writer, the general audience may not find a great deal of pleasure in them. Better for most of us just to jump right into reading his classic stories.

Entertaining but thoughtful way of seeing into a writer's way of working. Gives an appreciation of the skill of writing, and also the skill and delight of reading.

Florid but entertaining By Dan'l Danehy-Oakes I really don't have much to say about this, except that the essays collected here are very much of their time. Which, I suppose, says something about the more contemporary books on writing I've read: are they very much of our time? Do any of them represent timeless truths about writing?For example, Stevenson goes off on the dialogue of "realism," suggesting that dialogue in fiction should be more, well, elegant. And I get that: when it works, as in for example, Jack Vance's work, it's beautiful. But I also like dialogue that sounds like something somebody could actually say in the circumstances.Probably the most entertaining-to-me essay here is the one on the birth of "Treasure Island." It seems that RLS started with a map and wrote based on it. He wrote it for family, reading it at a chapter a night. And his original title was "The Sea Cook," which is quite accurate but decidedly less exciting.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Another Davenport masterpiece By James Cook Davenport once again brings his particular brand of genius to bear on a variety of literatures. One of the great things about G.D.'s essays is the fact that, even when he's writing about an artist one is not necessarily fond of, e.e. cummings in my case, the essay is still riveting because he manages to tie together a wealth of disparate ideas into a unified whole. Thus, while reading the essay on cummings, I learned something about Apollinaire that I didn't know before. And you better have a pen handy, because when reading his essays you're going to be compelled in several different directions to check out unknown authors and artists, or to take a fresh look at already familiar ones. An excellent book, though I haven't yet read something by Davenport I haven't liked.

Growing up in 1940s Brooklyn, New York, a boy’s birthmark haunts him, his angst compounded by catastrophe, religious conflict and parental meddling, while he learns about life and death. The novel takes place over a span beginning in 1933 and ending in 1971. Most of the story occurs in Brighton Beach and Coney Island sections of Brooklyn, where the boardwalk and beach play significant roles. It revolves around the boy's facial disfigurement since birth, resulting in exceeding self-awareness and angst. Over the years a family tragedy adds to his tribulations, followed by even more devastating consequences during adolescence when a mysterious girl enters the scene. In addition to the psychological aspect, the book deals with immigrants, religious conflict, bullying, racism, disastrous meddling with good intentions while he learns about life and death.

The characters are multidimensional and complex, and the author meticulously maintains each of their own particular voices and vernacular throughout the entire novel.While this book is easy to read, the content is by no means simplistic; it is a psychosocial study of the evolution of a young boy's self-image and the reactions of those with whom he comes in contact. It deals with shyness, bullying, tenderness, friendship, and even a budding romance. Adults can relate to having had one or more of these experiences during their teen years; teenagers can relate to them now.The historical details and venue descriptions so accurately portray the zeitgeist of that particular time and place that I was nostalgically transported back in time to neighborhoods, events, and a culture I knew so well as a child.It has been said that what makes a novel most memorable is the frequency the characters are thought about after the novel is read. I find myself thinking about them often, and wondering what the rest of their lives would have been like had the story continued or had the author chosen to take different paths.For people who like to get lost in a novel, "Mud Castle Destiny" is a must read.Dr. Ostrov's superb opus is a unique legacy that his children and grandchildren will cherish for the rest of their lives.Phyllis Eisenstadt
