If you want to help people learn from activities, exercises or experiences, this book is for you. This book fills a gap: it is the gap between doing an activity and learning from it. Plenty of books describe activities that are good for icebreaking, for team-building, for project management or for cross-cultural understanding, etc. A few of these books do give some limited advice about reviewing (or debriefing) the activities, such as: “How do you feel?” or "What have you learned?". But there is so much more that you can do as a facilitator than simply ask questions. This is a rare book for two reasons: It is about reviewing (How many books have you come across on this subject?) It is about reviewing actively.(Which makes it not just rare, but unique.) With the help of this book, you can make reviews at least as engaging as the activities you are reviewing. No more unwanted silences and no more superficial reviews. Just engaging and practical ways to help people learn from experience! How does that sound for a change?

Active Reviewing: A Practical Guide for Trainers and Facilitators, by Roger Greenaway, Bogdan Vaida, Calin Iepure

About the Author Meet the authorsAbout us ... One day in the summer of 2014, Călin Iepure travelled to Bucharest in search of new ideas to use in his work as a trainer. Călin had signed up for a two day trainer-training workshop with Roger Greenaway. During this workshop Călin got very excited about how he could use these new ideas in his work as a trainer. He then shared these ideas with Bogdan Vaida (a fellow trainer from Timișoara) and they both started experimenting with these dynamic training techniques. Soon their colleagues started showing an interest and they decided to invite Roger to provide a workshop in Timișoara in the spring of 2015. Over meals and coffee breaks, we started talking about making an online training course together. We quickly realised that in addition to our shared interest in making training more interactive, we each had a set of complementary skills: Călin's work with business start- ups and entrepreneurship; Bogdan's work with online training videos and Roger's niche providing training workshops in active reviewing skills and techniques. ... and a bit about the book After launching our online course in the summer of 2015, we decided to create a book version of the online course. You may find that this book is all you need, but at some point you may decide that you would like to take a look at the more detailed online course. We hope you find your journey into the world of active reviewing as rewarding as Călin found on his trip to the big city in the summer of 2014.May your future participants enjoy the new opportunities that active reviewing opens up for them. No more dull debriefs! --Roger Greenaway, Bogdan Vaida, Călin Iepure

By Amazon Customer If you want more than the dull old fashion question-and-answers reviewing methods for your trainings- this is the book you are looking for! It will offer you a diversity of methods which make the review an active experience in the mean time interesting, funny and useful for the trainees. You will learn how to use playing cards, ropes, a dummy remote-control and a dummy microphone and many more- all to make the review process more like a game and to make the content of your training stick to the participants. I liked not only the methods but also the light touches of humor that make the lecture very pleasant!

Seeds of Freedom is a remarkable case study of liberating education in the remote Guatemalan Maya indigenous village of Santa Maria Tzeja in the four decades since it was first settled in 1970. Clark Taylor's account begins at a time in which the majority of the village consisted of illiterate landless and land-poor peasant farmers working in conditions close to slavery. With the help of a Catholic priest, the village's founding pioneers were granted land, settled the village, established a school for their children, and began to prosper. By 2010 the village's emerging professionals were filling increasingly important social change roles at the local, regional, and national levels and nearly all children are educated with many to a university level. As such Santa Maria has come to exemplify the theory and practice of liberating education. The book tells the history of this remarkable community and reveals the transformative potential of the radical pedagogy of Paulo Freire and others. Santa Maria has thus become an example of dynamic liberating education, and its history has much to offer educators, students and solidarity activists throughout the world.

Seeds of Freedom: Liberating Education in Guatemala (Series in Critical Narrative), by Clark Taylor

Review Seeds of Freedom proves with insight and rigor how important the work of Freire and the project of liberating education is on a global level, especially in Latin America. Pedagogy as the practice of freedom takes on new meaning in this book and offers a historical and contextual understanding of the power of education when it is connected to social change. This is a powerful and important book and should be on everyone s reading list. --Henry Giroux, McMaster UniversitySeeds of Freedom is an extraordinary pedagogical tribute to a collective educational process, made possible by the unwavering commitment of a people to a liberating praxis for social change. Through on-going efforts by students, parents, and educators of the impoverished village of Santa Maria, a strong vision of liberatory education finds fertile ground to grow and evolve. Rooted in the philosophy of Mayan tradition, indigenous knowledge powerfully infuses life into this pedagogical struggle to recapture the human dignity of an oppressed community. In the midst of historical brutalities and the contradictions of everyday life, Clark Taylor weaves here an educational story of communal faith, hope, and perseverance a story that emerges from a tiny fragile seed in the countryside of Guatemala, to become a global testimony to the indomitable power of a determined people to transform their destiny. --Antonia Darder, Marymount University

About the Author Clark Taylor, PhD, is a founding faculty member of the College of Public and Community Service at the University of Massachusetts, Boston.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great book! By Richard A. Perras An engaging, informative and uplifting account of tragedy and ultimate success of young people in a remote village in Guatemala. Taylor describes the horrors of the destruction of the village of Santa Maria in the Civil War in 1982 and ends with the triumph of indigenous Maya students through education. It is, as the author modestly says, “…a story of liberating education and transnational cooperation…” but also much more. This book will resonate with anyone concerned with the current wave of thousands of unaccompanied minors from Central America crossing the southern border of the U.S.

It provides a valuable introducation to critical pedagogy, it is a window into the life of indigenous Guatemala over the last few decades, and it is an inspirational human story of international collaboration and solidarity.

A 2016 Coretta Scott King Author Honor book, and recipient of the Walter Dean Myers Award for Outstanding Children’s Literature. In this Coretta Scott King Honor Award–winning novel, two teens—one black, one white—grapple with the repercussions of a single violent act that leaves their school, their community, and, ultimately, the country bitterly divided by racial tension.A bag of chips. That’s all sixteen-year-old Rashad is looking for at the corner bodega. What he finds instead is a fist-happy cop, Paul Galluzzo, who mistakes Rashad for a shoplifter, mistakes Rashad’s pleadings that he’s stolen nothing for belligerence, mistakes Rashad’s resistance to leave the bodega as resisting arrest, mistakes Rashad’s every flinch at every punch the cop throws as further resistance and refusal to STAY STILL as ordered. But how can you stay still when someone is pounding your face into the concrete pavement? There were witnesses: Quinn Collins—a varsity basketball player and Rashad’s classmate who has been raised by Paul since his own father died in Afghanistan—and a video camera. Soon the beating is all over the news and Paul is getting threatened with accusations of prejudice and racial brutality. Quinn refuses to believe that the man who has basically been his savior could possibly be guilty. But then Rashad is absent. And absent again. And again. And the basketball team—half of whom are Rashad’s best friends—start to take sides. As does the school. And the town. Simmering tensions threaten to explode as Rashad and Quinn are forced to face decisions and consequences they had never considered before. Written in tandem by two award-winning authors, this four-starred reviews tour de force shares the alternating perspectives of Rashad and Quinn as the complications from that single violent moment, the type taken from the headlines, unfold and reverberate to highlight an unwelcome truth.

All American Boys, by Jason Reynolds, Brendan Kiely

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—Rashad Butler is a quiet, artistic teen who hates ROTC but dutifully attends because father insists "there's no better opportunity for a black boy in this country than to join the army." He heads to Jerry's corner store on a Friday night to buy chips, and ends up the victim of unwarranted arrest and police brutality: an event his white schoolmate Quinn Collins witnesses in terrified disbelief. Quinn is even more shocked because the cop is Paul Galluzzo, older brother of his best friend and Quinn's mentor since his father died in Afghanistan. As events unfold, both boys are forced to confront the knowledge that racism in America has not disappeared and that change will not come unless they step forward. Reynolds and Kiely's collaborative effort deftly explores the aftermath of police brutality, addressing the fear, confusion, and anger that affects entire communities. Diverse perspectives are presented in a manner that feels organic to the narrative, further emphasizing the tension created when privilege and racism cannot be ignored. Timely and powerful, this novel promises to have an impact long after the pages stop turning. VERDICT Great for fostering discussions about current events among teenage audiences. A must-have for all collections.—Ashleigh Williams, School Library Journal

Review "ALL AMERICAN BOYS is a terrific story that will compel readers to consider who they are, what they stand for, and what they should stand for. It’s that good." -Richie's Picks*"With Reynolds writing Rashad’s first-person narrative and Kiely Quinn’s, this hard-edged, ripped-from-the-headlines book is more than a problem novel; it’s a carefully plotted, psychologically acute, character-driven work of fiction that dramatizes an all-too-frequent occurrence. Police brutality and race relations in America are issues that demand debate and discussion, which his superb book powerfully enables.” - Booklist, starred review*"Timely and powerful, this novel promises to have an impactlong after the pages stop turning. " - School Library Journal, starred review"The scenario that Reynolds and Kiely depict has become a recurrent feature of news reports, and a book that lets readers think it through outside of the roiling emotions of a real-life event is both welcome and necessary." - Publishers Weekly"...[The authors'] passion elevates the novel beyond aneeded call to action to a deeply moving experience." -Kirkus Reviews

About the Author Jason Reynolds is crazy. About stories. After earning a BA in English from The University of Maryland, College Park, he moved to Brooklyn, New York, where you can often find him walking the four blocks from the train to his apartment talking to himself. Well, not really talking to himself, but just repeating character names and plot lines he thought of on the train, over and over again, because he’s afraid he’ll forget it all before he gets home. Jason is the author of critically acclaimed When I Was the Greatest, for which he was the recipient of the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe Award for New Talent; the Coretta Scott King Honor books Boy in the Black Suit and All American Boys (cowritten with Brendan Kiely); and As Brave as You, his middle grade debut. You can find his ramblings at JasonWritesBooks.com.Brendan Kiely received his MFA from the City College of New York. He is the author, with Jason Reynolds, of the Coretta Scott King Author Honor book All American Boys. His debut novel, The Gospel of Winter, has been published in eight languages, was selected as one of the American Library Association’s Top Ten Best Fiction for Young Adults 2015, and was a Kirkus Reviews selection for the Best of 2014. He is also the author of The Last True Love Story. Originally from the Boston area, he now lives with his wife in Greenwich Village. Find out more at BrendanKiely.com.

Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely's ALL AMERICAN BOYS is sure to change the way you see yourself and others By Cyrus Webb "If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor." ~ Desmond TutuThe quote above which I discovered for the first time in reading this book says so much about the community responsibility we all have towards one another. I have read literally over a hundred books this year, and I can honestly say that very few have impacted me afterwards the way that ALL AMERICAN BOYS has. Even though I am a 40 year old man of color living in Mississippi I have not experienced the blatant racism and discrimination that others have, but a book like this shows that you don't have to have experienced the events personally to be impacted and changed by them. What authors Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely have done is take what is a storyline that has become all too familiar and showed through fiction that things don't change until we do. Through the characters Rashad and Quinn we are able to see how quickly life can change and how people take sides not necessarily based on truth but the connection we feel with one person over another.Does discrimination and profiling exist? Yes. Does it make all people who look like the guilty or accused bad? No. And those two questions are great reminders as we go through life. In one night both Rashad and Quinn's lives were changed, but it was up to them how they allowed the events to shape them moving forward. Told in their respective voices, ALL AMERICAN BOYS highlights the need to get to know those around us, to understand what others are experiencing and to speak out when others feel they have no voice.Deeply moving and sure to leave a imprint on your soul, this book and the story it tells is not one you will be able to easily let go.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Important and Powerful Book By Nicole @ Nicoles' Novel Reads I have only read one novel written by Jason Reynolds but I have read nothing by Brendan Kiely. Both authors have created an important and powerful novel. All American Boys is about two high school teens who attend the same school. Rashad Butler is African American and Quinn Collins is Caucasian. One day Rashad goes to a convenience story to buy a bag of chips and is soon accused of shoplifting. A police officer ends up beating up Rashad so badly, Rashad is sent to the hospital. During this whole ordeal, Quinn is a witness. However, Quinn is conflicted. Although, the police officer is someone Quinn sees as family and a role model, the actions the police officer took against Rashad is wrong. Will Quinn march in the protest or will he side with the police offer?Police brutality isn't a hot topic in most books these days. Yes, police brutality may be seen in a lot of books around the civil rights movement but this novel is about modern day. We think racism is over but it still exists everyday. All American Boys handles race where people are conflicted and don't know who they should side with. Some people speak up against the injustice and others assume that the police officer is just doing his job and Rashad is the troublemaker. We are living in a progressive age but how much have we learned from history? This cultural and racial divide needs to end. Are we still fighting for basic rights? Aren't we all of the same race? We all belong to the human race. The novel is told in dual narrative from Rashad and Quinn's POVs. That ending! I loved the last chapter which is told by both Rashad and Quinn. Although Rashad has no clue who Quinn is, Quinn is conflicted through the whole novel about what he should do about what he saw that day at the convenience store. By the end of the novel, readers will find out what Quinn decides. The narratives are compelling and it's interesting to read from a victim's POV and a witness's POV of the attack.I highly recommend this book to be read in high schools and I will be recommending this novel to my students. It's an important novel that everyone should read at least once in their lifetime

Good midpoint twist By Debraj Contemporary story that follows a young black man who experiences police violence and the young white man who witnesses it. Explores community and family along the way. Strong plot. Good midpoint twist. Neither sentimental nor preachy. It ends in exactly the right place. A well executed story. The partnership between a black and white writer adds authenticity to voice.

Love this book By CYNTHIA KIENER A highly informative book on black culture, hip hop and the recovery of the black man and women in the United States. I love the unique take on a serious problem race continues to be in this country and taking ownership and responsibility of an amazing culture and history of people. The author accomplishes by encouraging her readers to be proud of who they are and where they come from and not allow the media/entertainment industry and white culture take that away.

Forgiveness is possible. In The Beginner's Guide to Forgiveness, author Jack Kornfield explores why forgiveness, personally and globally, is essential to our health and happiness and how you can start using this timeless practice to transform emotional wounds into healing and understanding.

Drawing from his background in meditation and psychology, Kornfield reveals the path to forgiveness and the way out of our pain. Once you understand your own suffering, he says, compassion arises naturally, so you can extend it to others as well as yourself. With guided meditations and insights from the world's wisdom teachings, Kornfield shows how forgiveness can be practiced as a gift we give not only to others but ultimately to ourselves.

But this CD is very important for our modern world. "Forgiveness" is not going to be a hot topic or best seller, I suppose. Most people are more focused on punishing the people they're angry at. Yet Kornfield tells stories on the CD that touch my heart in powerful ways. I repeated a few for my friend, who's not into Buddhism or meditation, and he was so moved that he had to stop for a few minutes to think about how different the world would be if we had "temples of forgiveness" as Kornfield says. Kornfield includes a meditation on forgiveness and a meditation on lovingkindness (metta). I practice both daily, and my heart has opened more as a result.

It is really neat to be stuck in a traffic jam while listening to Jack Kornfield. It still does not make being stuck in traffic fun, but it makes anxiety feel silly.Forgiveness is a tough subject, especially true forgiveness of one's own deeds is difficult. And true forgiveness (in contrast to fabricating excuses) lies at the core of this teaching. One sentence I have really enjoyed said (approximately): "To practice forgiveness means giving up all hope for a better past."Jack Kornfield is easy to listen to, he tells us stories that point clearly to the heart. To your heart and the heart of the matter. I highly recommend this audio CD. Other Jack Kornfield favorites of mine are "The Roots of Buddhist Psychology" and "Buddhism for Beginners."

14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. The Forgiving Heart By Konrei This audiobook is wonderfully titled THE beginner's GUIDE TO FORGIVENESS, since we are, after all, all beginners in the realm of forgiveness.Etymologically, forgiveness means "to give first" and Kornfield's forgiveness training is all about giving, whether to our enemies, our friends and relatives, or ourselves. Some of Kornfield's forgiveness stories are so poignant that they caused me to weep. Some are unbelievable, or would be, but for the fact that, after having lived long enough, nothing is unbelievable. And nothing is unforgivable. This is an important life's lesson, and, as the spoken word, THE BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO FORGIVENESS has a far more powerful sense of immediacy than would it as the printed word.
