Art professor Lydia Drexel has lost her muse. For the first time, she is hopelessly staring at a blank canvas; she’s blocked. When she relates her anxiety to colleague and confidant, Dr. Charles Harris, his answer is “the perfect getaway.” A stack of books, a case of wine, and a few weeks at his cousin’s cabin in the mountains should free her mind. Settling into the picturesque retreat, Lydia intends to focus on her art, along with any issues that might be inhibiting her ability to create. Before she starts to sketch, she meets two young artists who live nearby. Early in their friendship, she senses an abnormal tension between the brother and sister. Lydia soon learns Jan and Bryce Johnson’s adoptive parents died in a car crash, but ample support from an insurance policy and moral support from the community allow them to remain independent. At the Farmers Market, Lydia is drawn to the intricate puzzle boxes Bryce carves. Inside one, she finds a slip of paper with strange symbols on it. As the siblings’ behavior becomes more and more mysterious, the marks turn up in other places. Vowing to decipher them, Lydia surrenders to a lifelong tendency to focus on anything but her own problems. While hiking one day, she meets another resident of the mountain town, architect and contractor John Crawford, who is recently widowed. Lydia has never been married and is unsure about sharing her life with someone, but their connection is undeniable. As Lydia comes closer to discovering the truth behind the cryptic emblems, dark secrets are revealed and lives are in jeopardy. Her respite is far from the quiet withdrawal she had envisioned, but what she learns about herself and her art is life-changing

Anna Carlson has a compelling story to tell about living through a nightmare of being in an extremely abusive relationship. She was verbally, mentally, and physically abused by a man whom she thought loved her. She stayed in her marriage due to having children and being threatened, and tormented if she left. The abuse soon followed her children with their own father becoming their perpetrator. Anna believed her children when many wouldn’t. She has fought a negligent and uncaring system, which failed to protect her family when they were needed the most. Anna has worked with many agencies that range from law enforcement, counselors, teachers, attorneys, private investigators; and she lived in a woman’s shelter. Anna is now telling her story. This book is for anyone who has ever lived or is now living through an abusive relationship...to let them know there is a way out and that there is hope. It is for any child who may have been in similar situations, to know they are not alone in this world. It is for any child who was abused and grew into an adult to let them know it was not their fault. It is for teenagers so that they can know the signs of abuse.

Wake up call to the reality of our society By Saisy bear This book is an insight as to how unfortunately our society is not set up to protect the child as much as we falsely believe and trust that there are systems and programs in place in order to protect. Sometimes they do protect. Sometimes children are taken to a safer place. But here they didn't. And how many other times do they not?How many more children are out there today being forced out the door from a safe, happy environment to one of abuse, neglect and brainwashing? All because of the lawAnna has taken the difficult step to write about and publish her experience. It makes me wonder how many more out there have had the same or similar situations and not been helped and the children are the ones who pay the price, not the perpetrator, not the judges, or DCFS case workers, guardian ad litems, or mediators. It is the child that suffers and pays a silent heavy price under the hand of the abuser. My hope is that our society will begin to recognize that there are many out there literally crying for help to be rescued from abuse.I hope this book is taken seriously and read by those that can make a difference in a child's life and future.

Not only the abuse she and her children suffered at the hands of her husband and their father but, also the abuse she suffered at the hands of the government agency's entrusted to protect them. It's obvious that in spite of her valiant efforts to be heard and believed the system failed her.

Review

"If I had to choose a single book to share with a faculty member about how to design and teach an online or blended course, or with an instructional designer partnering with that faculty member, that book would be Essentials of Online Course Design: A Standards-Based Guide, Second Edition. In this concise, clear, and well-written volume, Marjorie Vai and Kristen Sosulski provide a methodology for online and blended course design that is informed by learning theory and seasoned by practical experience. This is the standard reference guide that those of us involved in online and blended learning will be keeping close at hand."

The pressure is on. Throughout the country, educators and administrators are working hard to make sure students pass standardized tests and graduate. At the same time, teachers are overwhelmed by ever-increasing demands. Efforts at reforming schools often replicate the same approaches and net the same discouraging results. Staff at many schools feel defensive and powerless as a result of being unable to meet standards they didn’t set and don’t know how to achieve. This book describes a humanistic approach to implementing programs and systems that bring academic press, social support, and relational trust together in unique ways. Based on the understanding that old beliefs are changed by supporting new behaviors, the approach includes acquiring and using data in innovative and intentional ways. Properly conducted, the approach results in high morale, a sense of inclusiveness and success, increased efficacy, and improved metrics in all areas of education. The book includes the research and theory behind the approach, action steps for leaders, and lessons learned in the process—useful elements of success for any school.

Review It is so refreshing to read a book about school reform from the point of view of the people who actually did the work. This book is proof that with dedicated, tenacious, and student-centered educators—anything can happen! (Becky Berg, Superintendent, Marysville School District, Past President ASCD)In this timely book, the authors share important lessons of a lived experience in school leadership in which a low-performing school was genuinely transformed into the opposite. And this account comes not from an inner-city in a large school system, but from a mid-size district that could exist anywhere in the nation. This well-written book is a must-read for every educator who embraces a commitment to success for all. (Michael Dunn, EdD, Superintendent, North East Washington Educational Service District 101)In the current context of school systems, people often feel not only unloved, but also powerless. This book shows that person-to-person relationships can restore the balance in leadership-impoverished school systems, turning them into organizations where people listen, embody greater vitality, and act with love and courage. (Shann Ray Ferch, author Forgiveness and Power in the Age of Atrocity: Servant Leadership as a Way of Life; National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellow; professor of Leadership Studies, Gonzaga University)The work of Dr. Salina in high-poverty, high-minority, underachieving schools affirms that poverty is not a sickness, diversity is not a challenge to overcome, and hope is not a strategy for change. Powerless to Powerful combines the theory, the evidence-based research, and the proven practical application to truly transform your school and district. (Trevor Greene, National Association of Secondary School Principals' 2013 National High School Principal of the Year)

About the Author Charles Salina, PhD, was the turnaround principal at Sunnyside High School in Sunnyside, WA. He is currently chair of the Leadership and Administration Department in the School of Education at Gonzaga University.Suzann Girtz, PhD, is a former high school math and science teacher who now teaches research and assessment in the School of Education at Gonzaga University. Great for any manager, leader, or school to transform the culture of their workplace By Elizabeth Wiederspohn I looked at the piece of paper in front of me. It couldn't be. We were doing everything the education experts said we needed to do to succeed and according to the sheet of paper in front of me, none of it had worked. As a teacher at Sunnyside High School, I was discouraged and tired. That is when Dr. Salina stepped in. We had missed a piece of the puzzle and it was a big one. His model of leadership and his process to empower staff and students really did work and has continued to work after Dr. Salina left Sunnyside High School. Sunnyside High School changed from a place no one wanted to work in to a place no one wants to leave. I would encourage any manager, leader or school to read Dr. Salina's book and change the culture of their workplace.

You can get a real sense of the hurt Leia still carries for her lost planet and for all the losses the Rebellion continues to suffer. This story expands minor characters from the movies such as Nien Nubb and hints at Leia's untrained Force sensitivity. All in all, Leia is perfect in this. She's one of the great leaders of the Alliance and also a warm, emphatic soul who cares about the individuals around her. This is great for the middle schoolers it's aimed at and adult fans.Read this AFTER the Luke Skywalker novel "Weapon of a Jedi" and the Han Solo novel "Smuggler's Run".

A Mature Examination of the Cost of War By RDD In "Moving Target: A Princess Leia Adventure", Cecil Castellucci and Jason Fry present Leia's actions between "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi". The title refers to the fact that Leia, being a high-ranking and well-known member of the Rebel Alliance, must be constantly moved to avoid Imperial capture as the Rebellion plans what to do following the disastrous Battle of Hoth. Wanting to contribute in a more active role, Leia helps devise and execute a decoy mission to draw the Empire's attention while the Rebels assemble their fleet to target the second Death Star. Of the three books in this series, this one is the most adult in theme, dealing with moral ambiguity and debating which sacrifices are necessary in a time of war.Like the other three books, "Moving Target" features a brief glimpse of events leading to "The Force Awakens". This preview shows Leia preparing for a battle with the First Order, referencing Poe Dameron (the pilot in the "Episode VII" trailers), and talking with Major Ematt, who first appeared as Lieutenant Ematt in "Smuggler's Run". Here, too, Phil Noto's artwork adds a nice touch, linking this with the other two books in the series and providing a nice glimpse into the action. The only complaint I have about "Moving Target" is that the setting of its story confirms that Disney/Lucasfilm no longer consider "Shadows of the Empire" canon. This will only upset fans who experienced that work, though, and the book does offer good insight into not just Leia, but Nien Nunb, a side character whose importance was implied by his role as Lando Calrissian's co-pilot in "Return of the Jedi" and who now has a proper backstory. In summary, "Moving Target" is a nice conclusion to this trilogy of books and does a great deal to set the stage for "The Force Awakens".

In my humble opinion, compared to the Star Wars and Darth Vader series, it felt like a bad Saturday morning cartoon, and the Dodson's art within the issues wasn't up to their standard. I really wanted a Leia story that did this great character justice, and I'm thrilled to say that Moving Target does that and more. The Luke and Han books in this line-up both took place between Episodes IV and VI, so it's nice to see that Leia's book is set between V and VI. What's even nicer is that Luke makes brief appearance throughout the book; it gives insight into his transformation after the end of Episode V. But ultimately, this book is about Leia and the team of rebels that she leads, and I'm glad to say I came to care for all of them. But as for Leia, we really see what drives her and what frightens her, and how those aspects of her combine to make her the great leader she is. Much like The Weapon of a Jedi and especially Smugglers' Run (my favorite of the three), Moving Target reads in Carrie Fisher's voice, and it does not feel like a throwaway novel but rather an essential piece of Star Wars canon once you've read it. Castellucci and Fry capture Leia's wit, boldness, and love perfectly through this book. And Phil Noto's illustrations are excellent once again. In fact, I think he draws Leia even better than he draws Luke and Han.I will also say that the prologue and epilogue here are (to me at least) by far the most exciting of the three books. It provides clear insight into Leia's role in Episode VII without spoiling anything, really. The epilogue also mentions someone who will likely be a key character in episode VII.Overall, my favorite of these is Smugglers' Run, followed by Moving Target, and followed (very closely) by The Weapon of a Jedi. I may have even given this book 5 stars, but this is a review of the product, unfortunately there was a printing issue on each page where the pages numbers at the bottom were cut off.
