UnCommon Learning: Creating Schools That Work for Kids, by Eric C. Sheninger

Review “Too often, school improvement initiatives layer activities upon cultures and systems that are not ready to receive them. Uncommon Learning rejects the notion that something must be done in addition, and instead begins with changing the foundational culture of a school—consistent with NASSP’s Breaking Ranks Framework for School Improvement. Countless schools—and more important, countless students—will no doubt benefit from the guidance Eric shares.”—JoAnn Bartoletti, Executive Director, National Association of Secondary School Principals“In Digital Leadership, Eric Sheninger trail blazed the path many educational leaders followed to become digitally connected and now, in Uncommon Learning, he gets right to the heart of exactly what we need to do to create schools designed to empower today’s students. Eric doesn’t just talk about change; he has actually led change in his system and his story is both inspirational and filled with practical tips for implementation.“—Dave Burgess, New York Times Best Selling author of Teach Like a PIRATE and co-author of P is Pirate: Inspirational ABC’s for Educators"Eric's vision and collection of resources to create a student-centred learning experience for schools is something that all educators should read. Although he shares great ideas on what opportunities could look like, he challenges us to push our own thinking of what school could really look like and move forward to become the innovative educators our students need."— George Couros, Innovative Teaching, Learning, and Leadership Consultant"For the past several years, Eric's mission has been to find effective ways to use technology to improve student performance. In 'Uncommon Learning - Creating Schools That Work For Kids' he shares the most impactful practices he has found. These practices provide a guide to move school reform, using technology, from a concept to a reality." —Dr. Bill Daggett, Chairman and Founder, International Center for Leadership in Education"Get rid of excuses. Stop having conversations. Start taking action. Uncommon Learning is the guidebook that will get schools from apathy to action, from ignorance to influence, from the status quo to supercharged with excitement. Eric Sheninger has written another winner."—Vicki Davis (@coolcatteacher), Author, Reinventing Writing Host, The Every Classroom Matters Show"Every educator who truly wants to maximize the learning opportunity for every student will benefit from the thought provoking questions, challenges and solutions Eric provides in UnCommon Learning. He artfully provides a roadmap for creating a bold new vision for learning for both educators and students through empowerment, mindset change, blended learning, re-designing instructional practices through a true integration of digital strategies to enable students to be creative, problem solvers and owners of their learning. His lessons learned and those of teachers will provide schools with the foundation for transforming their schools for uncommon learning."—Susan Gendron, President, International Center for Leadership in Education"This is one of the very few, really good books about digital learning – not just because of its clear and informative examples and rich cache of tools, but because its experienced and multi-award winning author, Eric Sheninger, explains how to develop and implement digital learning, indeed all learning, in a balanced, sustainable and self-critical way. Unlike most pro-technology books, this passionate yet practical book is more about the zen of changing than about the zealotry of what must be changed. Teachers, leaders and change agents in education everywhere should put this book right at the top of their reading lists."—Andy Hargreaves, Winner of Boston College Excellence in Teaching with Technology Award, 2015Brennan Chair, Lynch School of Education, Boston College"With a strikingly fresh and practical perspective, Eric Sheninger takes contemporary learning to a new level of possibility with UnCommon Learning: Creating Schools That Work for Kids. Educators throughout the world agree that we need to support "right-now" learners, but the big question is HOW to transform the schools in our own communities. Eric has created a modern leading-manual which promises to be a must have classic for principals, headmasters, administrators, parents, and teachers. If our students read the book they will find an advocate. Sheninger's thinking on learning communities, curriculum, digital tools, networking, and makerspaces is genuinely designed to work for kids of all ages."—Heidi Hayes Jacobs, Author and international expert on contemporary curriculum and instruction"UnCommon Learning is a book that is long overdue! In this most important book for educators at all levels, Eric Sheninger has put into writing what he has “preached’ all over the country for years – that in order to effectively maximize student learning, the technology that is all around us cannot be ignored but instead must be incorporated into the classroom learning process. UnCommon Learning will prove to be a game-changer for how we educate children!"— Baruti Kafele Principal, Education Consultant, Speaker, Author"There is a growing movement in this country and others to use what we have learned over the decades about effective teaching and learning to design the next generation of classrooms and schools. Eric Sheninger’s new book is a welcome addition that movement. He adeptly walks the line between practical strategies and motivating visions of the near and distant future."— Robert J. Marzano, CEO, Marzano Research“In this urgent and practical book, Eric Sheninger argues that technology must become as central to students' learning as it is in the ‘real’ world. Uncommon Learning will teach educational leaders how to integrate technology into the classroom in ways that reflect today's complex, feedback-rich digital environment."—Daniel H. Pink, Author of Drive and A Whole New Mind"Sheninger, in UnCommon Learning, identifies key areas for growth within our current school systems. Most importantly, he lays out a simple and intentional path to addressing these areas with the goal of improving learning and the overall school experience for students. Educators, regardless of their role within a school, can use this text as a guide to create optimal learning environments for their students with the ultimate goal of creating schools that provide current, relevant and engaging learning experiences."—Josh Stumpenhorst (@stumpteacher), Award Winning Teacher and author of The New Teacher Revolution"Unlike so many experts offering prescriptions for our beleaguered schools, Eric Sheninger has walked the walk, running an actual school and striving each day to make it better. In UnCommon Learning, his ideas, born out of real experience, not wishful thinking, will resonate with smart educators who have seen the Next Big Thing come and go with little to show. Our kids deserve to be surrounded by educators like Sheninger who are willing to examine their own prejudices and practices, then think long and hard about what needs to change."—Greg Toppo, National Education writer and author of The Game Believes in You: How Digital Play Can Make Our Kids Smarter"UnCommon Learning is a great look at the six most important EdTech trends in schools that work for kids: online and blended learning, BYOD, badges, maker, professional learning, and new learning environments. Eric lays out eight key steps to creating UnCommon Learning environments. Don’t miss it!"—Tom Vander Ark, CEO, Getting Smart"Schools today are at a disadvantage when it comes to educating today’s learner, which necessitates a corrective plan of action. Eric provides not only ideas, but also practical strategies that have been implemented to create the type of learning that students crave and deserve. This book will change the way you think about school structure and function in an increasingly digital world."—Todd Whitaker, Professor of Educational Leadership and author of over 30 books, including What Great Teachers Do Differently"For students to succeed in today’s fast changing world, schools must join technology and teaching to prepare students with relevant knowledge and skills. Bringing passionate commitment and vast practical experience, Sheninger lays out concrete ideas and strategies for every school to transform learning to provide meaningful learning experiences for all students. This is a must-read for practitioners and policymakers.” —Bob Wise, President, Alliance for Excellent Education"Educational transformation can happen and this book tells how. In UnCommon Learning, former teacher and school principal Eric Sheninger shares practical strategies and processes to create sustainable positive changes to better serve our children."—Yong Zhao, Author of World Class Learners and Never Send a Human to Do a Machine’s Job

By Jeffrey Zoul I just finished this outstanding book by Eric Sheninger, one of the leading educational thinkers in the world today. The title of the book is perfect, as throughout it, Sheninger makes the case that we need to make dramatic changes in our schools and classrooms, moving beyond the "common" to more relevant, authentic, innovative, and student-centered experiences. Although such practices are currently "uncommon," if we read Eric's book, we have a roadmap for changing the status quo and making "uncommon learning" the norm. Throughout this book, Sheninger offers practical, proven ideas for transforming our classrooms, libraries, and school cultures. He draws on both his past experiences as principal of an award-winning high school as well as his current experiences working with educators around the globe, sharing lessons learned from both that can be replicated by others hoping to improve educational experiences for both students and teachers. This book is clearly written and organized. It starts by making the case for why we must change the way we do school. Then, it proceeds with chapter-by-chapter examples of creating specific "uncommon" learning experiences. In each of these chapters, Sheninger offers specific stories and examples showing the "how" of change. In the final chapter, "Schools that Work for Students," Sheninger is at his best, offering a call to action so that our kids' learning experiences are ones that make them actually want to come to school. Specifically, he offers eight ways to move uncommon learning experiences forward in our schools. I recommend this book for educators desiring the best for students we serve and looking for specific tips on how to do so.

-In an attempt to reconnect with his two alienated adult children, George Temple replicates the memorable horse trek through the forbidding Yellowstone wilderness they had enjoyed twenty years earlier. But his callous children, Courtney and Scott, accompany him only to persuade him to restore the financial support he has withdrawn. As they are led by a drunken guide and a venal horse wrangler over potentially lethal terrain, their bonding experience quickly disintegrates. Nostalgia is corrupted into a nightmare of lust, betrayal, and entrapment as the children's disturbing motives are revealed and dark family secrets are exposed. Courtney's appetite for selfish and violent pursuits establishes her as one of the most evil women in fiction, alongside the likes of Lady Macbeth. Through her, Warren Adler explores how an obsession for celebrity and blind ambition can distort familial love and turn a beloved child into a grotesque monster. As he did in the iconic The War of the Roses, Adler paints a frightening picture of the American family, only more sinister. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Acclaimed author, playwright, poet, and essayist Warren Adler is best known for The War of the Roses, his masterpiece fictionalization of a macabre divorce adapted into the BAFTA- and Golden Globe–nominated hit film starring Danny DeVito, Michael Douglas, and Kathleen Turner. His recent stage/film/TV developments include the Broadway adaptation of The War of the Roses, to be produced by Jay and Cindy Gutterman, The War of the Roses: The Children (Grey Eagle Films and Permut Presentations), a feature film adaptation of the sequel to Adler’s iconic divorce story, and Capitol Crimes (Grey Eagle Films and Sennet Entertainment), a television series based on his Fiona Fitzgerald mystery series. By fredamans First I have to say I enjoyed both The War of the Roses and The Tie That Binds, but the dark nature of the latter attracted me more. This book is dark and twisted like it, but in a different way.I loved 99% of it.It was the very last page I hated. Yup. Total WTF!!So I will keep in my memory the 99% and make my own last page....Suspense seekers that like little sick and demented twists, this is for you....4.5/5

By K Cowdall This is a tense, atmospheric thriller which uncoils chapter by chapter and leaves us with a literal cliff-hanger at journey's end. As with the best of the author's work, The Serpent's Bite is at times intentionally uncomfortable reading, with acutely drawn characters it is difficult to sympathise with, so that we turn the pages awaiting an anticipated comeuppance. It does not disappoint, and in Courtney Temple, Warren Adler has created a female character as manipulative as Becky Sharp, as vindictive as Nurse Ratchet and, ultimately, as destructively wicked as Mrs Danvers.Kevin Cowdall, author of Paper Gods and Iron MenPaper Gods and Iron Men (with Flanagan's Mule)

By MadameRue Having been written by the author of "The War of the Roses" I was expecting a blockbuster, can't put it down, can't wait to see what happens next kind of book. This was none of those things. The book started off very slow and didn't get much better. Not one of the characters in this book was likable in any way (well, maybe the aging father's new girlfriend that you get small glimpses of). You just couldn't connect with any of them. They also weren't so detestable as to make the book interesting. The back of the book describes the lead female character as "one of the most evil women of contemporary fiction". She didn't even come close.I understand that dysfunctional people is the author's schtick. However, the whiny, spoiled, narcissistic, incestuous adult children in this book were a disappointment. More time was spent delving into and describing their sexual exploits, both past and present, than on character development. The blackmailing illegal alien's character was so sporadically developed that he was pretty much an also ran character even though the plot depended on this character toward the end.The drunk outfitter was so predictable it was like his character didn't even count. The aging father was just pathetic. The culmination of the story was one page that was anti-climactic and seemed to be thrown in as an afterthought.

Here's the deal, I think there's a lot of information (and misinformation for that matter) surrounding credit and collections and creditors. Where the author differentiates himself as an expert is in the details. I especially appreciated the script in the second tip. I wrote it down and stuck it in my wallet and read it word for word when a medical collector called. I haven't heard from the collector since (and trust me they were relentless). This book is incredibly concise, easy to follow, and most importantly easy to implement. A+ and thank you for helping me not have a panic attack everytime my phone rings.

By Mr Robin Rowles This 158 page, interactive workbook will inspire your children and take them on a fabulous journey of discovery. It is packed with paintings, drawings, poems and heart-warming stories. It's all based on the facts of nature, science and art.The reader is encouraged to write their own stories, draw and color. They can use their own imaginative ideas and create their own personal experiences and personality. The story of: 'My Uncle Angel' is a delight to read. I also liked the story of: 'Cute and Cuter' - the two caterpillars. I must also mention: 'Honey: The Bee Who Wanted To Fly' - it is a fascinating account of all the different tasks carried-out within a beehive. It will help your understanding and appreciation of the hard working queen bee, and her army of workers! - You can even learn about how you can help the endangered bee!Obviously, there's far too much information for me to write about here! However, there is an important message for everyone, written within this delightful book! Many of the animals mentioned are in danger of extinction. I believe this book will help with your creative thinking – and growth into a creative adult and thinker. In this way, you will be made aware of the animals, plants and the fascinating variety of people in our world!I recommend this book for: parents, grandparents, and educators. The target age range is: 5 to 10 years; although, there is something of interest for all ages, in this thought-provoking and endearing book.Check out the video trailer at: https://www.goodreads.com/videos/82067-creative-children-like-the-animals-of-the-worldI received a paperback version of this book; through a promotional give-away.

A beautiful and imaginative book, in which the child becomes both author and artist in furthering its creation By David Lloyd Too often, children are spoon fed information, which many mistakenly consider "education". It is very refreshing, then, to discover such a book as this, whose aim is not only to inform but also to encourage a creative learner. Already on the cover page, the child is empowered to be much more than just a reader, by being invited to become both an author and illustrator of the book. And as a result, each and every copy of the book becomes unique in itself, for a special child has taken part in its creation.Colorful, vibrant and full of entertaining narratives, the child is drawn into an imaginative and heart-warming interactive world of animals which can be shared with parents and grandparents alike. It is truly a book you will not want to miss.

Michelle Korenfeld has written and illustrated it herself, but it is a participative book that engages responses from children and allows them to explore their own expression of illustrating the animals about which they learn. It includes poems and stories and is an utter joy to those who love creative teaching and participative learning! Thank you, Michelle Korenfeld!

He didn't believe in fairy tales

Romantic fantasies and happy endings don't fit Oakes Bartasavich's reality. Of course, neither does his breathtaking attraction to Daphne Lynch. From his prestigious career to his volatile family, there's too much at stake to risk one kiss—let alone one night—with her.

But a snowy Christmas stranded together in Shady Grove, Pennsylvania, shines light on everything he's fighting to deny. Daphne isn't just a beautiful temptation. She's a strong, intelligent, kind woman who deserves a happily-ever-after. One that Oakes isn't sure he can give her…no matter how much he'd like to.

As I was reading through this story, I hoped for a major twist in the plot, because as it was, it was desperate and heading for a major failure. Here's the situation - Oakes is the older half brother of Zach, Daphne's older half brother. Daphne and Zach's mother was a nanny for Oakes, when she had an affair with Oakes' dad, and became pregnant with Zach. Right, not the most traditional family ever. When you add to it that Daphne's dad was an alcoholic, who had abused the family, and tried to coerce Daphne to give him money at her high school graduation... Just as dysfunctional as it can be.So, when a psychology student, Daphne, goes after her long time crush, the lawyer Oakes, acting desperate, silly, making schemes to get them together, and outright begging him to pay attention to her, kiss her, sleep with her, whatever it was that she wanted at the time, it was embarrassing. Because even though Oakes didn't deny, that he was physically attracted to Daphne, and liked to be her friend, he was also very clear he didn't want to, or like to be attracted to her, didn't want to have a relationship with her, and only slept with her to get her out of his system. But even that doesn't stop her, she really still, goes after him, showing up at a party where he is with the woman he choose to be, wants to be with, who, according to him, fits into his life and is attractive, interesting, and all around lovely to be with...So, I admit, I had really hard time believing he actually would change his mind, or convince me that it was true love, after all that happen before. I'm sorry, but this couple didn't convince me of anything else, except that she was desperate, not very mature, and stubborn to the fault. There was also another couple in the story, the teenagers from the previous book of the series, Luke and Gracie. The teenage love drama that they lived through seemed more mature at the times, as the grownups, and was a cute addition to the book, even though in no way attached to the main plot.Yes, this story frustrated and embarrassed me more than anything else, but thankfully the teenagers saved part of the story.. Sorry, I really wish I could have understood and liked the story more than I did~ Two Spoons with a teaspoon on the side

He shouldn't. Although unrelated, she IS related to his half-brother, Zach. Zach hates all the Bartasavich's or at least likes to think so, but he is protective of Daphne and warns her against getting close to Oakes. Oakes, too, is hesitant to act on his attraction. He's the brother who never takes chances, always does the right thing. But Daphne does take chances, has always been into challenges, the harder the better. And Oakes is a challenge. She's been in love with him since her senior year in high school. How she finally gets Oakes to see her as more than a cute former high schooler informs most of the story, now that she's all grown up and convinced that if she can just get Oakes alone and out of town--as in attending his brother's wedding in Shady Grove--he'll see that he shares deep feelings for her and that they'd be perfect together. But those wierd family relationships and all the problems they represent are in the way. Or are they?

By Isha Coleman Oakes is too busy trying to please and mediate everyone and everything around him to stop and enjoy life. When nature throws him a curve ball in the form of Daphne Lynch and an unexpected storm he is forced to reexamine what is more important. Winter's Kiss was a sweet story about making time to explore and enjoy all the blessings that are placed in your pathway. I received an ARC of this story in exchange for an honest review.

Nancy Shulins had a great career, a loving husband, and was looking forward to having a family. Cheering as her friends got pregnant and dutifully bringing gaily wrapped gifts to every baby shower, she suffered bout after bout of unsuccessful infertility treatment. Devastated, she slowly heals through the most unexpected route: the love of a good (if cranky) horse named Eli.

Everyone knows a woman who loves horses. Maybe she rides whenever she can find the time, maybe she rode as a young girl, or maybe she just devoured the Black Stallion books. Twenty years ago, Nancy Shulins let go of one dream--having a child--and worked toward another one: learning to ride and, eventually, having her own horse. In the process, she learned what it means to love another being so much you can’t imagine life without them. Falling for Eli is about learning to break a sweat rather than break down, to try your best even if you’ll never be the best; it’s about learning to stand on your own six feet.

She vividly depicts the dedication and passion required to love a horse long-term, as well as the limitless rewards in doing so…As Shulins shares her challenges and triumphs with Eli—her lovable but injury-prone gelding—and nurses him back from a series of ailments, including lameness, hives, Equine Protozoa Myeloencephalitis and a fractured shoulder, her heart is healed as well…An inspiring memoir about how ‘motherhood’ can take many forms.” Library Journal, 5/3/12“This book will appeal to horse and animal lovers as well as women who have struggled with getting pregnant.” Booklist Online, 4/13/12“In this heartwarming and soul-searching memoir, Shulins lets the reader in on her love affair with [a] temperamental chestnut.” EntertainmenRealm.com, 5/11/12“An easy-to-read memoir for any animal lover.” InfoDad.com, 5/24/12“The totality of the book gives exactly [the] impression: of a profound, tremendously meaningful connection between human and horse, in which there is genuine two-way communication.” January, 6/4/12“Nancy Shulins’ fantastic personal journey is made all the more powerful by her fierce talent. The twice Pulitzer Prize-contending journalist knows how to tell a story; knows how to bring us along…Like the very best memoirs, Falling for Eli is a wonderful story, but it is also so much more. Nancy Shulins is an amazing writer, and is able to capture for her readers the pathos and the humor as she moves from the devastating realitythat she will never have children to the joy of owning and caring for Eli, a "singular" character indeed. One doesn't need to know horses or experience infertility to identify withMs Shulin's journey from sorrow to hopefulness and love.

Recuperating with Eli By California Cowgirl Conversation to the ER staff as I hobbled my way to registration mumbling something about my gentle quarter horse who has never ever bucked...well must have been spring fever - I should have seen the spark in his eyes, his ears snap to attention, when I made my way out to get him. Brushed, saddled and rider up - not for long - it was a long 8 week recovery for me - emotionally and physically. We have been a team for years, I thought to myself as I relived every moment of that ride - a few bedridden days later, scrolling through myriad on line books, I saw it - the face called out to me, and then the title - hmmm, I was looking for anything but a book on the love of a horse - in my mind I was done with horses, period. Eli came along. Nancy's personal journey, her honesty, her ability to articulate how Eli made her feel powerful and loved, how her life was more complete, the stories of learning to ride, made me cry, laugh, and got me through weeks of physical therapy and gave me the emotional support to get back in the saddle - women and horses - there is no stronger bond and no stronger love - thank you to Nancy and Eli - for giving me the courage to saddle up, again -

Although I am not a rider (or a woman - it seems there aren't a lot of males in the world of horse riding) I really loved it. The writing is colorful, the characters are engaging, and I went from page to page following Nancy as she discovered herself and the joys and challenges of riding and ownership through her relationship with Eli. Along the way I learned a lot about the care and feeding of horses and the depth of feeling they share and can evoke. I think it a great read for any age!

Lights! Camera! Wait. Each year vibrant college graduates parade across a ceremonial stage and into an unemployment line. The spur of their enthusiasm creates a profound myth: their college degree is a single path to career prosperity. In reality, if they originally pursued their education without the Lord God's guidance, they will automatically step into an unfathomable experience that strips the value of their college feat. To inspire and persuade students toward the right direction, I felt compelled to write: "Why God Should Come Before Your College Degree." My urgent message sheds light upon how prospective college students and college graduates may end their careers with an assurance to snag that perfect job. After my spiritual lesson, from a divine college professor, I learned that "Lights, Camera, Wait" is a warning signal alerting students to put God first, before they use "Action" to go after their college degree. Their college experiences of them following God's obedience will steer their career into this adage: "The sky is the limit!"
