With so many choices, I could take home a different flavor every week of the year. Some, of course, are tastier than others, but it would be boring to only eat vanilla for the rest of my life. Likewise, there is no short supply of parenting books; even though some are more helpful than others, I appreciate the many literary contributions that dutiful parents have made.Safe House is like the Butter Pecan of parenting books. It may not be the most popular flavor, but I sure I am glad I picked it. To the eager reader, Joshua Straub offers the general theme of emotional safety as the key to successful parenting without sharing many specific techniques. The bulk of the book focuses on the four "walls" of a safe house: grace, truth, exploration, and protection. Surprisingly, I found the best material deep into the book; Chapter 8 was my favorite with its startling information about the overstimulating effects of technonlogy on a young brain. While Safe House certainly more verbose than Tedd Tripp's Shepherding a Child's Heart, it reminded me of that wonderful book. Safe House is sound in its logic, thorough in its research, and warm in its writing style. Like that last ice cream purchase, it may not be my favorite, but I found it quite enjoyable and well worth the time.I received this book from Blogging for Books for this impartial review.

Safe House By Oak Tree *I received this book for review*Safe House: How Emotional Safety Is the Key to Raising Kids Who Live, Love, and Lead Well by Joshua Straub, Phd, explores how to give your children emotional support, stability, and safety. The book is written from a Christian perspective, and the author shows how faith plays a major role in parenting. Straub discusses how to make your home a “safe house” for your children, complete with protective walls and a firm foundation. I especially enjoyed reading about the various psychology studies referenced in the book, as well as the end-of-chapter questions that analyze parenting styles. One of my favorite parts of the book was the Safe House Parenting Assessment, a 30-question quiz which describes what kind of parent you are. Though it’s not an extensive quiz, it does highlight the key principles that Straub believes a “safe” parent should have. From building needed boundaries to encouraging healthy independence, the book covers a wide range of topics.

Myrmel Joshua Straub has outlined the process of parenting extremely well. His balance of discipline, natural consequences, room to explore and most importantly, emotional safety in the home is right on. We have parented four children, eight troubled youth and contributed in large measure to seven grandchildren and have worked to accomplish the same goals as outlined in this book.My personal catch phrase is that "It is our job as parents to bring an infant who is 100 percent dependent on us parents to a young adult who is as close to 100 percent independent and able to make correct decisions for themselves by the time they leave our house."This is the first book that I have read that aligns so closely with my parenting philosophy.The two things that Joshua points out that I believe but now have a clearer understanding are that discipline is not the same as punishment. The second is what I have believed but not been able to put into words and that is emotional safety that is the key to maintaining a relationship with our children which will foster the above move toward independence.I was given a free audio version of this book for my agreement to review it but this has not influenced my personal impressions of the book.
