Excerpt from Studies in Seven ArtsDo you remember the first two sentences of Pater's essay on 'The School of Giorgione'? I will copy them, for they make a kind of motto for my book, and sum up, I think, the way in which you and I (you always, and I since I have known you) have looked upon art and the arts. 'It is the mistake,' says Pater, 'of much popular criticism to regard poetry, music and painting - all the various products of art - as but translations into different languages of one and the same fixed quantity of imaginative thought, supplemented by certain technical qualities of colour in painting, of sound in music, of rhythmical words in poetry. In this way, the sensuous element in art, and with it almost everything in art that is essentially artistic, is made a matter of indifference; and a clear apprehension of the opposite principle - that the sensuous material of each art brings with it a special phase or quality of beauty, untranslatable into the forms of any other, an order of impressions distinct in kind is the beginning of all true æsthetic criticism.'With the art of poetry, or of literature in general, I am not here concerned: that is my main concern in most of my other books of criticism.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. By propertius It might be asked why one should read a book published more than 100 years ago concerning art history and contemporary artistic trends and find that expect that it should be as timely as though it had been written for latest edition of "The New Criterion."It goes without saying that aesthetic opinions may and do change from time to time as artists struggle to find legitimately new symbols and styles to express eternal verities. However, it is interesting to see that many of the trends and concerns that Mr. Symons voices have also been mentioned by such social commentators of the day such as Thorstein Veblen in his work "The Theory of the Leisure Class" as early as AD 1897 particularly in Mr. Symons' lament in his chapter "The Decay of Craftsmanship In England" to cite one example. This tome discusses such diverse matters as Beethoven, Wagner, the Ballet, and Symbolism. So peruse this book if not for historical or scholarly reasons, than certainly for personal enjoyment and its power to make you justify your own opinions.
