Excerpt from General Grant's Letters to a Friend, 1861-1880Perhaps no other person not connected with the military service contributed in so great a degree to General Grant's success in the American Civil War of 1861-1865, as the Hon. Elihu B. Washburne, to whom the following forty-eight letters and parts of letters were addressed, during a period of nineteen years. Beginning in the first year of the war the correspondence was continued uninterruptedly until after the close of Grant's second administration and his return from the extended tour around the world. The letters are certainly of no inconsiderable historical value, being dated in many instances from such famous battle-fields as Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, and the Wilderness, and revealing in an interesting manner many of the strongest and most admirable traits of General Grant's character. These private communications contain his views upon men and affairs in the western hemisphere, as well as in many of the foreign lands which he visited.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. General Grant's Letters to a Friend, 1861-1880 (Classic Reprint), by Ulysses S. Grant

About the Author Ulysses S. Grant was a successful military general and the eighteenth President of the United States. A graduate of the prestigious West Point military academy, Grant served in both the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) and the American Civil War (1861-1865), in which he was appointed commander of the Union Army. Grant's successful military campaign against the Confederate States, executed by Union Generals William Tecumseh Sherman, Philip Sheridan, and George Thomas, culminated in his acceptance of General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox courthouse on April 9, 1865.

First elected President in 1869, Grant's two presidential terms focused on reconstruction, further stabilizing the nation socially, politically, and economically following the end of the Civil War. His government successfully passed the Fifteenth Amendment, protecting voting rights for Africa-American citizens, pursued an Indian peace policy and created the Board of Indian Commissioners, and shut down the Whiskey Ring, recovering over $3 million in embezzled federal taxes. Grant died of cancer in 1885 and is interred at New York's Riverside Park in Grant's Tomb.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Outdated By Candace Scott One wonders why this book was republished since it contains very little interesting information on General Grant. All of these letters are available in the multi-volume series, "The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant," published by Southern Illinoise University. The letters here are published with any editing, and for people unfamiliar with Grant, it will be very difficult to follow the people, places, and events described herein. The book is still rated as above average, if only because Grant writes beautifully, and the letters show his droll, dry wit to perfection. But it would be a waste to purchase this volume, especially if you have access to the "Papers of USG" project.
