4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Comprehensive but boring By othoniaboys This is a comprehensive study of Portuguese literature up to around 1920. It says nothing about Fernando Pessoa. It is as boring as a textbook. Bell deals with every possible aspect of the subject, and presumably actually read most or even all of what he discusses. It was his thankless task to introduce English-speaking people to a literature which was substantially unknown to them, and to write the book just before the greatest Portuguese writer, Pessoa, came to public attention.
