Notes from the Playground documents how childhood experiences — especially those that happen on the blacktop — shape who we become. These narratives arise from one principal’s epiphany that came as he looked out over a hundred children, playing, running, yelling, laughing, and crying. He recognized that he stood in a place where millions of journeys begin. He had found the starting point for countless destinies. He went forward with a different vision for how we can, by affirming the child within ourselves and one another, make our lives truer and more vital than we might have imagined.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. easy to read in a single sitting By Kevin Fong This collection of 100 parables from the schoolyard will resonate with anyone who works with kids, has kids or was a kid!Elementary school principal Greg John captures these stories in a way that will make your heart both sink and soar with the adventures we have all experienced in our schools. Moreover, Mr. John links these tales with the patterns that play out in our workplaces, homes and communities. The lessons we learn on the playground don't venture far, as the archetypes are reinforced with our daily interactions. The book is formatted from September through June - so you can follow the natural course of a school year. Each story is a self-contained vignette, easy to read in a single sitting. Or better yet, savor each story and read one per day as a 3-minute meditation.I used a couple of stories to share at my staff meeting to engage conversations about cooperation, communication and teamwork. They worked beautifully as folks were able to go back in time to reveal long-held truths about themselves and about the assumptions they made of others.Needless to say, Notes from the Playground is not just a book about children, but about life itself.

I've been following him on his blog (http://principaljohn.com/) and found his writings to be sweet little nuggets -- filled with boundless joy, sad truths, quiet compassion or thoughtful wisdom -- all in bite sized pieces. More importantly, each note is authentic and heartfelt. As a book, I am able to share his writings with my friends - some educators and others not. Don't be fooled that this book is only for people in education. It reminds us that children are our future leaders. When they are given encouragement and the space to grow, the world will be in fine hands. A much needed reminder for all of us.And I have to mention that I am totally ticked by the illustrations sprinkled within the book. If only I could be as cute as the illustrations!

Ants wouldn’t escape his view; nothing small, beautiful and wonderful did. He showed us what we would have missed. And this is what Greg does each time he writes: wisdom gleaned from the kickball diamond; miracles caused by cupcakes; the warmth of light through school room blinds; how chalk marks on a blacktop reveal secrets and then wash them away after a rain; that your heart can be opened day after day when you stand in a playground watching and listening.May this collection help us find our way to helping others see the meaningful details of each and every day, in spite of the distractions of living in a very noisy world.
