Baumgarten's inspiration for creating the work was holding the hands of his children and asking, "What will your beautiful hands do today?" This book asks questions on each spread (e.g., "Will they [your hands] lift?…What can they lift?") and uses simple or complex handprints to illustrate. Young elementary school students have made turkeys and flowers with their handprints for years, but these illustrations take handprints to another level. The primary and secondary colors jump off white backgrounds and demonstrate that handprints can be more complex when hands swoosh and swirl, or tiny fingertips create big images. The text is spare but encourages stretching imaginations and thinking of the wonderful possibilities each new day brings. About the Author Kathryn Otoshi is the acclaimed author of One, winner of 20 awards, including the E.B. White Read Aloud Honor Book and the Teacher's Choice Award. One is an anti-bullying book which introduces colors, numbers, and counting while playing on larger themes of acceptance and tolerance. Her book, Zero, is about self-esteem and finding value in ourselves. Her most recent book, Two, (Fall 2014) is about friendship and reconciliation. Co-author and illustrator of Beautiful Hands, she speaks all over the country, using her character-building number books to inspire children of all ages.Bret Baumgarten (1970-2014) was born and raised in the SF Bay Area where he lived with his South African wife, Deborah, and their two children, Noah and Sofie. His daily question to Sophie, "What will your beautiful hands do today," sparked this book, which he hoped would inspire his daughter, and all children, to use their beautiful hands for goodness, and to achieve their dreams. This was his first book.

Every morning Bret Baumgarten would ask his daughter, "What will your beautiful hands do today?" This book was inspired by that question and gorgeously woven together by Kathryn Otashi. While I still love "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein, this is my new favorite children's book. Children and adults alike will be inspired to question what their hands can do to make the world a better place. What an incredible legacy Bret Baumgarten has left for us all to enjoy!

I've always strived to instill within my children the idea that the possibilities for them are endless and that they are capable of anything. This book, by posing a very simple question, inspires the reader to explore these possibilities every day. I highly recommend this to every parent.

There is a wonderful message of giving children confidence in their ability to create as well as help their community. The art style is very playful and has a lot of depth the more time you spend with this book.
